    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge Body Armor Smooth Rocker Guard Kit fitting all 2007 and up JKs. Of course, there is a version of this kit for those of you with a two door and those of you with a four door JK. Today we're going to talk through the installation of this rocker guard kit which is a very simple one out of three wrench installation. We'll also talk through the construction and a few of the features of these guards. These are going to be for those of you who want to finish off the otherwise unfinished look of the pinch seam underneath the doors of your JK. That rocker guard section from the factory does look a little bit unfinished with some holes drilled in it, and a set of rocker guards like this will certainly finish off the look. However, rocker guard is used a little bit loosely when it comes to this particular product. This is a plastic product that while it does use a couple of screws to hold it in place, it also attaches with 3M tape and you're not going to get any sort of protection from off-road obstacles. This is going to be protection against kicking the rocker with your shoes and scratching up the factory paint, and it is going to be a little bit of protection from door dings depending on the height of your Jeep. However, these will take the place of some steps or some other rocker guards. You won't be able to run those two in conjunction so these are going to be for those of you who are staying on the road and don't need actual rocker protection for off-roading. As far as a plastic, more aesthetic part goes, I think that this is fairly priced and it does work as advertised. These rocker guards are made of a UV treated thermoplastic so they're going to hold up well in the sun. They're not going to fade or become brittle. They are also going to be pretty strong so if you do get bumped into by a door in the parking lot, these won't crack or become damaged. As I said before, these are designed to work specifically on your two door or four door JK. They do bolt directly onto the holes that are already existing in your pinch seam and use some automotive grade 3M tape to be held in place. I said before that this is a very simple one out of three wrench insulation and it definitely is. There's a good chance you'll get these installed in less than a half an hour with just some traditional hand tools and a good cleaning product. Any time you're attaching anything to your vehicle with 3M automotive adhesive, you will want to make sure that that area is nice and clean. So I would recommend roughly holding the rocker guard up to the Jeep, seeing the area where the pre-applied 3M adhesive is going to actually stick onto the rocker panel and making sure that area is nice and clean with a good alcohol based cleaner. From there, you can use the 3M adhesion promoter that comes in this kit to make sure you get a really good bond between the 3M and the surface of the vehicle. What I would recommend is after cleaning the surface, hold these in place and put a few of the nuts and bolts through your new rocker guard into that pinch seam to hold everything in place. From there you can start to peel the 3M tape and make sure everything is lined up properly before you pull the rest of the backing off and really make sure that it sticks to the side of the Jeep. You will want to make sure that you're doing this when the temperatures are moderate. You're not going to want to do this on a really hot day or a really cold day because it can affect how that 3M adhesive adheres onto your vehicle. So if you're doing this in the winter, try and do it in a heated garage. If you're doing it in the summer, pick a cooler day or a day in the shade so that that adhesive sets up good and everything is going to stay where you put it. The nice thing about the 3M adhesive is while it will stick and stay exactly where you put it as long as you want it to, this is completely reversible. So if you remove the nut and bolt hardware that is attaching these rocker guards to the pinch seam and do a little bit of pulling and peeling, you can certainly remove these and go back to stock without any long-term effects. As I mentioned before, just traditional hand tools and a good cleaner and you'll get this job done in less than half an hour. Sometimes when you get plastic products like this, some of the edges aren't perfect, you can see where the mold wasn't quite right. These are really, really well made and that's why I would say that they are worth the cost. They are a little bit expensive in my opinion for just an aesthetic piece but if you like the look that these provide and a little bit of protection that they provide, these are very, very well built. So if you're looking to change up the look of the rocker area of your Jeep, make that pinch seam look a little bit more finished and add some protection against kicking that rocker and scuffing up the factory paint, these are going to do a nice job. These are a really well built version of these rocker protectors and while they're not going to give you protection in an off-road scenario, they will help protect against scratches and some door hits. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Body Armor Smooth Rocker Guard Kit fitting all 2007 and up JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Is it possible to instal item#J107236 Snyper Triple Tube Rock rail with this guard? I’m trying to find something that’s gonna close up the unfinished side to my 2018 JKU.

        • This Rugged Ridge Rocker Guard kit will indeed be compatible with the Snyper Triple Tube Rock Rails (item #J107236). They utilize different mounting points which is what allows these both to work together.

Will these work in conjunction with both the smittybilt xrc front fenders (j17686 / MPN#76880) and rear corner guards (j17682 / MPN#76882) installed?

        • The front fenders (J17686) will fit just fine with this Rugged Ridge Body Armor Smooth Rocker Guard Kit. However, being as we have not done the testing directly, due to the fact that the rear fender protrudes from the Jeep, we would not be able to guarantee compatibility between these two.

            Pretty Cool

It's half held on with adhesive, which was a little disappointing, but it doesn't seem to matter much to it's ability to stay on. It's done well for the last month.

            Great product

I ordered the body armor rocker guard in a Sunday afternoon and it was at my doorstep Monday night. It was well protected and wrapped. I installed both sides less than an hour and it gave my jeep such a nice look. I love it. Great buy.

            Basic Coverage for Pinch seams

If you are looking for something basic to cover your pinch seams after taking the steps off your JK Sport, this is it! These are as basic as you get, no bells or whistles, just plastic trim that mounts with plastic screws and tape (provided), to cover up the vacant holes left behind from removing your factory or other steps. Here’s a helpful hint: if you are planning on installing any other steps with these, you’ll probably want to install the steps first if they use the pinch seams, due to the tape.

            Body Armor Rocker Guard Kit

Really dressed up the pinch seam and gave the bottom of my 2010 Jeep a finished look. Used a flat black spray paint on on the frame and it all blended together well!! The product looks much better on than it does out of the box. The torx screws need to be a litter stronger for the installation. I stripped one out and was close to doing it on a few others. I would recommend the product simply on how it finished the Jeep's looks

Product fit perfectly and all holes lined up. Only issue is that the guards are labeled backwards. Just test fit before install and each side should take just a few minutes.

            Take your time

The most important thing that you can do when installing the rocker guard kit is to take your time. I believe that those who have stated that the kit does not fit to their Wrangler most likely have gotten the sides mixed up. Rugged Ridge DO NOT include labels on either the instructions or molds as to which side is Left/Right. I suggest laying both molds alongside your Wrangler, and make sure the correct holes are aligned. The two tools you will need is an Allen Key Set and the ELUSIVE 10MM wrench. In my experience installing these to the Jeep, the most difficult part was peeling the 3M tape from the adhesive. I find it best if you insert and tighten every bolt approx 50 of the way, peel and adhere, and then tighten the rest of the way.

As always super fast shipping from Extreme Terrain. Super easy install. Took about an hour total. That included taking off my Rubi rails and installing the new guards. These don’t offer much protection but look good and hide the factory seam.

Great product not sure if I got it right

So I installed these myself and I am not mechanically inclined AT ALL. So naturally I knew I would somehow screw something easy up...the nuts and screws are very tight and hard to tighten and of course I stripped a few of the screws...apparently the 3m tape and the screws I didn't strip are enough to hold it on...anyway good product I'm the only problem

            Great pinch seam cover

Took the stock steps off because I would step over them and wanted something to cover up the unfinished look. I didn't want a cheaper step or rail that bolts to the body and didn't want to spend the money on heavy duty frame mounted rails. I wasn't looking so much for protection but more so just a cover. I re used 2 of stock bolts on each side that had washers bolted to frame so I have some bolts left over from the kit. The 3M tape is holding pretty well for the 2 weeks I've had it on. With the bolts tightened, it holds pretty tight to the frame the tape just adds that little hold.
