    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This is available for both two-door and four-door Wranglers. So make sure you get the right one for your Jeep. This side armor is for those of you who hit the trails on the weekends and need some casual protection from the occasional bump on the trail. And also it's something that's a really useful step. If that's what you're looking for and you want something that installs really easily, these are a pretty nice option. This side armor is really well-built. It's constructed of inch-and-three-quarter diameter, .12-inch wall thickness steel, and everything is texture powder coated to resist corrosion and rust down the line. The 2-door version weighs in at about 65 pounds, and the 4-door version that you see here weighs in at about 75 pounds. There are a couple different ways that side armor can mount to the Jeep. One of those is onto the body mounts, and the other is onto the pinch seam. Well, this is the latter. These are designed to mount to the pinch seam and to the bottom of the tub without any drilling. They'll use all the factory holes and the hardware that's included in the package. The downside to side armor that mounts in this fashion is that they're not quite as strong as the armor that mounts to the body mounts. So they're a great step. They look good, and they provide some protection, but if you're out on the trail every single weekend, dragging the Jeep over rocks, you're probably gonna want something that's a little bit tougher. These are designed to be bolt-on, which makes installation really easy. They'll attach to the Jeep with the hardware that's included in the box. One thing that's important to remember is that you can't have these installed with any other side steps or even your factory ruby rails. If you're bolting them onto an '07 to 2010 JK, the holes that are in the tub are not threaded. So you'll use the threaded inserts that come in the box. If your Jeep is a 2011 to 2016, those holes are already threaded, and you won't need the inserts. The bottom line is don't be worried if you have a little bit of extra hardware left over when you're done with the installation. These do come with really good instructions, but because they span different year ranges and the installs can be a little bit different, they can get a little bit complicated to look at. Don't be afraid when you get these home to take them out of the box and hold them up to the side of the Jeep. It'll become really evident quickly which holes you'll use and if you need those threaded inserts or not. The whole installation should take you about two hours, and it will be helpful to have an extra set of hands around because, again, these things do have some weight to them. As far as tools go, you won't need anything but a normal socket set and some wrenches. I think you do get a lot of value for what you pay for these. They feel really solidly built. They look good. The coating is nice. They definitely work as a step, and they'll give you some of that casual protection that we talked about. I wouldn't expect these to work like much more expensive, much stronger side armor. Again, if you're using the Jeep every weekend on the trails and you're really beating up your armor, I would recommend getting something heavier duty that'll probably be a little bit more expensive, but for the weekend wheeler and someone who wants something that doubles as a step and that's a really easy install, these are a nice choice. So all in all, if you're looking for bolt-on side armor that will give you some protection, work as a very useful step, and change up the look of your Jeep, all without breaking the bank, I think you're looking in the right place. So that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find them right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Do these still serve as a good step in winter conditions or would it be better to get the RedRock side steps?

    • RedRock 4x4's side step would be a better designated step in winter conditions because of its durable non-slip step pads.

Can these rails be used as a lifting point for hi-lift jacks?

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor would not be suggested to use as a lift point since these are installed on the pinch seam and not the frame.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      These are PURELY COSMETIC!

These look great and function fine AS A STEP ONLY!! The first trail I went through and slid these on rocks tore the bolts through the pinch seam. This is a horribly weak point to anchor something that is supposed to hint at protecting by supporting the weight of the Jeep. It wont. It is side armor which at the end of the day did more body damage than had I run NO ARMOR AT ALL.

      Classy Sassy

I own a 2014 JKU So I already had the threaded 6 holes Under the body of the jeep 3 on each side so no need to use all the extra bolts and hardware Then you attach six bolts with washers and lock bolts on each side of the body of the jeepI used 2 Jackstands to hold them up for me took me a little over an hour I did it myself and yes I’m a girl :) I love the look and price was great and I use them to get up in my Jeep.

Driver's side did not line up

Got frustrated, almost sent them back. Then figured out I could tap the body seam a little in and get the armor on. Not sure if it was bent or the mounting bracket was flawed but if I ever replace them I'm going with a set that mounts to the body mounts. I had rubi rail take offs I bought but after putting a tent on top I needed something I could stand on. Got these because they were inexpensive and I had already bought a tent and a roof rack. Feel like I got what I paid for.

Ok, these things are rad! But a slight annoyance to put on had to improvise a bit on my ‘12 JK Unlimited. Definitely need a friend or a makeshift balancing act until you get the bolts goin! Overall they work and look awesome!

      Rock Sliders

Once I opened the box, to make sure everything was there made sure all of hardware was there. When I was done , they looked great. I would recommend these sliders to anyone. I didn’t need extra hands , set up all hardware, pick up bars and bolt in.

      RedRock 4x4 Side Armor

A well made, quality addition for mild protection and sidestep. May change out the small mounting bolts that go through the pinch weld seam, as they just don't seem of very heavy strength. Otherwise these side guards were a breeze to install by myself and look good as well.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      somewhat disappointed!

Appears well made, and would look good, though not really structural for underbody protection. The big disappointment is that one would think they could add a little plastic cover to hide the lower body seam, previously hidden by the stock rock rail. It seriously detracts from the overall cosmetics, and lets face it, this is a mostly cosmetic "Side Armor." A little deceiving in the advertising too.

      Great product !

Pretty easy to do, used most of the original hardware , did it by myself but another hand to hold it up and get the first bolt on could help , these things are heavy duty and they stop rocks from kicking up into the rear fender. A Also only a couple hours and they were on solid

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Good Purchase

Pretty heavy which is what I expected. It suggests to use a lift to center the slides and line up the holes - which I don't have - so I set them on the box, which got it close enough. I've banged it up a few times and so far it's solid! Only reason I didn't do 5-stars on appearance is because this model hangs down a couple inches. Making my clearance a little less on the sides. Other than that, I really like them.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Great product

I installed these with my 2 daughters and had them do most the work. Kit comes complete with all the hardware to account for variations in Jeep models. These things really look great and give you a nice step when getting in/out of the rear seats. Also, they'll certainly add a nice extra protrusion of protection against other people opening their doors into you. Amazing that these came shipped for less then $200 but I will say, they're attached with 2 bolts under the Jeep and another couple bolts along the side, I would NOT want to count on getting the entire Jeep hung-up on boulders and expect these things to hang in there without bending or other issues. I'd say these are mostly for looks and modest protection, absolutely not for hardcore rock crawlers but for the money and ease of installation, outstanding! The Jeep looks much better as it rounds-out the fenders with more width
