Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This is available for both two-door and four-door Wranglers. So make sure you get the right one for your Jeep. This side armor is for those of you who hit the trails on the weekends and need some casual protection from the occasional bump on the trail. And also it's something that's a really useful step. If that's what you're looking for and you want something that installs really easily, these are a pretty nice option. This side armor is really well-built. It's constructed of inch-and-three-quarter diameter, .12-inch wall thickness steel, and everything is texture powder coated to resist corrosion and rust down the line. The 2-door version weighs in at about 65 pounds, and the 4-door version that you see here weighs in at about 75 pounds. There are a couple different ways that side armor can mount to the Jeep. One of those is onto the body mounts, and the other is onto the pinch seam. Well, this is the latter. These are designed to mount to the pinch seam and to the bottom of the tub without any drilling. They'll use all the factory holes and the hardware that's included in the package. The downside to side armor that mounts in this fashion is that they're not quite as strong as the armor that mounts to the body mounts. So they're a great step. They look good, and they provide some protection, but if you're out on the trail every single weekend, dragging the Jeep over rocks, you're probably gonna want something that's a little bit tougher. These are designed to be bolt-on, which makes installation really easy. They'll attach to the Jeep with the hardware that's included in the box. One thing that's important to remember is that you can't have these installed with any other side steps or even your factory ruby rails. If you're bolting them onto an '07 to 2010 JK, the holes that are in the tub are not threaded. So you'll use the threaded inserts that come in the box. If your Jeep is a 2011 to 2016, those holes are already threaded, and you won't need the inserts. The bottom line is don't be worried if you have a little bit of extra hardware left over when you're done with the installation. These do come with really good instructions, but because they span different year ranges and the installs can be a little bit different, they can get a little bit complicated to look at. Don't be afraid when you get these home to take them out of the box and hold them up to the side of the Jeep. It'll become really evident quickly which holes you'll use and if you need those threaded inserts or not. The whole installation should take you about two hours, and it will be helpful to have an extra set of hands around because, again, these things do have some weight to them. As far as tools go, you won't need anything but a normal socket set and some wrenches. I think you do get a lot of value for what you pay for these. They feel really solidly built. They look good. The coating is nice. They definitely work as a step, and they'll give you some of that casual protection that we talked about. I wouldn't expect these to work like much more expensive, much stronger side armor. Again, if you're using the Jeep every weekend on the trails and you're really beating up your armor, I would recommend getting something heavier duty that'll probably be a little bit more expensive, but for the weekend wheeler and someone who wants something that doubles as a step and that's a really easy install, these are a nice choice. So all in all, if you're looking for bolt-on side armor that will give you some protection, work as a very useful step, and change up the look of your Jeep, all without breaking the bank, I think you're looking in the right place. So that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find them right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Dual Function. Red Rock 4x4 Side Armor gives your 4-door JK Wrangler an aggressive off-road appearance while providing practical undercarriage protection from brush and other trail hazards. Plus Red Rock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor also doubles as a convenient step for easy entry into your lifted vehicle.

Heavy Duty Construction. Manufactured from heavy duty 1.75"" diameter (0.12"" wall thickness) steel tubing, this Red Rock 4x4 Side Armor is completed in a textured black powder coat finish for aggressive good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Easy, Bolt-on Installation. The Red Rock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor is engineered to be a direct bolt-on upgrade using just basic hand tools, so there is no drilling or cutting required for a clean straight forward installation.

Application. This Red Rock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor is designed to fit 2007-2018 4-door Jeep Wrangler JKs. Includes driver and passenger side.

What size bolts and washers are used with these rails? The video shows galvanized and I think black bolts and washers would look a lot better. Please advise, thanks!

Chris

  • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor now uses black finished bolts, as opposed to the zinc coated bolts shown in the video. The updated hardware can be seen in our product images.

  • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor will install below the pinch welds, and sit lower than the body, loosing some clearance on the sides in exchange for added protection.

  • If you are referring to the factory Rubi Rails that come with Rubicons or the Willy's Edition Wrangler, unfortunately, the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor is not compatible but the Barricade Rock Sliders are compatible. They can be found here: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-rock-sliders-jk-j100288.html

  • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 2 Door) will not fit you 4 door, but this one will https://www.extremeterrain.com/red-rock-4x4-side-armor-black-jk-j100185.html. The video was recorded last year, but the link provided above will fit your 2017 as well.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

Gave my '13 Wrangler some character

I ordered the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor after searching for a step, and figured since I have a base model Jeep, I could use a little protection too. There was not much info out on these yet, but I took a chance on the few reviews, and ordered. The price was right, (15% off deal), shipping was free and FAST(had them within 3 days of my order), and they looked great right out of the box! I am a 5'3 little woman, so I enlisted my boyfriend and his son to assist me in putting these on. Boyfriend held the Armor up on his knees while his son and I got the first 2 bolts in. After those 2 bolts were in he only had to rest the piece on his knees while we screwed in the last 4 bolts on the sides. We had the Side Armor on in about 45 minutes, and that is including the time we took sorting the bolts/washers/nuts. ***Keep in mind there are different bolt sizes used for the '07-'10 Jeeps, and the '10-14 Jeeps. You WILL NOT use all the hardware if you have a newer Jeep. Directions are somewhat clear on paper, but once you actually look at the underside of the Jeep it's a no-brainer as to where to bolt them on. My only concern after I purchased was that I did not see anything written indicating how much weight these babies would be able to handle if someone were to happen to stand on them and bounce up and down on them, etc....Of course we tried that! We had at least close to 300lbs of people on one side of the jeep at one time, with absolutely no movement of the armor or loosening of the bolts, even after bouncing the jeep around a bit. We'll see how they hold up, but so far I'm very impressed. This was my first "purchased" modification to my Jeep as I still am somewhat a new Jeep owner and have only made a couple do-it-yourself mods so far. The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor gives my Jeep so much more character! They are visually pleasing, and practical for little old me!

I looked around at a lot of different rock rails for my 2014 Wrangler Unlimited, and decided to purchase these. The Website said that the installation was easy and took no time at all. I received the rails super fast, 2 days after purchase! Unfortunately, there were no installation instructions that came with the rails. I called customer service with Extreme Terrain, and they were able to get Red Rock 4x4 to email me the instructions. Then, the brackets did not line up with the holes in my jeep body panels and frame, so we had to hammer the brackets to fit. An "easy" installation took 3 of us about 3.5 hours to complete!!! We did get them installed finally, and they look/work fantastic with my jeep!! I haven't had an opportunity to see them work off road yet as everything around me is covered in snow!!

    In a word-Awesome!

These side rails are built like they mean business. Super strong, good welds, and an awesome finish. These look great and can definitely be used as a step. Took a little longer than expected because I had to grind out 2 of the holes just a bit to get the proper fit, and I did it alone. Jacks and jack stands go along way if you end up doing this by yourself. Overall very happy with this product and would recommend it.

    Great features but minor issues

The rails are great but the hardware supplied was not enough to install the rails. I had to purchase several bolts, nuts and lock washers to complete the job. Once installed they look great and provide excellent protection.

Good for the money, looks great

First off, have to say great customer service. Rails are not exactly packaged goodmenough for the not so gentle UPS treatment for a 75lb 6 foot long box. Firts set had to send back due being damaged and missing parts thanks to UPS. Was no sweat getting RA from ET customer service, sent back damaged rails on Monday and put on my repladements on Friday. Second set made the trip much better, box was was pretty rough but all parts and no damage. Took me and the 12 year old about an hour to install, required very moninor tweaking but was pretty straight forward and easy with two people. Looks sweet and now the 4 year old can get in and out with my help.

    Great looks and great protection

I installed this product with my 11 y/o son, he did most of the work, I helped with holding (heavy) the bars up for install. They fit great, I gave it four stars for the fit because adjusting all the bolts to fit it before fully tightening the bolts was a bit of a pain, a touch awkward, but that could've just been that my son was doing most of the install, lol. They look great and offer great protection from side jeers on the trails. They are definitely heavy duty and seem like they will last for years to come. I waxed them as soon as the install was done and this should be done frequently, more often than you wax your Jeep. Overall I am very satisfied with the product and the buying experience. Not to mention the price is a bargain. Thank you Extreme Terrain for a seamless transaction and delivery.

    Easy Install

I originally had Rubi Rails on and was hoping I could use them in tandem. Nope... after cutting the brackets off the rubi rails and cursing and so on it was a bust. That said, I really like the way these rails look. They were easy to install with no holes drilled and they are sturdy enough to support both my brother and my weight. First time out on the trail I bumped them and saw no deflection. They are a little lower than the OEM skids so that's nice. Also since I have a white Jeep I masked off and painted the pinch weld above them with truck bed liner and it really pulled the look together.

    Great rock rail/side steps

These look great and were very easy to install. The rails came with extra hardware to for other year models, but once I figured out what to use for my jeep it took me less then a hour to install. Also if is much easier to have someone hold the step rails while you line up the bolt holes and install the bolts. Once the two bolts are in it easily becomes a one person job for there on our.

    Easy Install-Need Mud Flaps

These are very durable rock sliders and have a aggressive look. They are heavy, but they're a functional rail that needs to be made from heavy steel to support the vehicle when you have low clearance over rocks and obstacles. The rails were easy to install with the help of my son, and only took a couple hours to bolt to the existing bolt holes. After driving a few weeks with these rails installed, I decided to install mud flaps on the fenders. While the new rock sliders look cool and are very durable and functional, the tubular design does not keep tire spray from your paint like the stock step rails. If you like your JK clean, I recommend purchasing mud flaps along with the rock sliders.

    Looks great once on

The steps were easy to install, but the hardware package did not have the nut bracket that was on the parts list. Lucky my 2014 jeep had the nuts already in the body. We ended up spraying a textured automotive paint on the bottom lip where the steps bolt on due to my jeep being silver and the bolts black, to make the appearance better over all.

    Combines Protection and a Step

Solidly built, good looking and easy to install. A helper would speed installation, but I did it single-handed in less than an hour. Would have saved a few minutes if the instructions had added a line about how to quickly distinguish left from right units. Packaging was badly damaged on arrival, but the side armor itself was unblemished. Great combination of added protection and a side step.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

    Easy installation and great look!

The RedRock side armor took my jeep wrangler sport to the next level, giving it a more rugged look along with added protection. The look of the textured black coating goes nicely with my red jeep giving it the look I was seeking. This was the first of many things I plan to add to my jeep and it couldn't have been any easier to install. I have very little knowledge of tools and I installed this with a basic tool set. Fits perfectly with the precut holes alread located on the body of your wrangler! The side armor also can act as a step making it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. I had over 300 pounds standing on it and it did not budge at all. Overall, I think it was worth the amount paid for them, not only does the side armor beef up my jeep but is also will aid in protecting the sides of my jeep while off roading for many years down the path... Or no path.. Whatever I choose!

Exactly what I was looking for

I was looking for a rock slider and a step. I recently lifted my 2011 2dr Wrangler (2" AEV spacer lift and ProComp Xtreme A/T 285/70 r17, 33X11.5) and needed something to fill the rocker panel gap. Oh...and so my wife could get in easily. The reviews were in favor and the price was right. Ordered on Friday and received on Columbus day. I know...I was suprised to. Installation is relatively easy with another person. You kinda need someone to bench press the step under the rocker panel while you try to figure what bolts are going into which holes. I guess hardware for all years are included. The directions are vague at best, but very easy to figure out. By the time you drink a beer...it's all figured out. Give yourself 1.5 to 2 hours and take your time. They look great, especially dirty and they're the right proportion. They feel pretty solid and heavy duty.
