Simple installation for anyone.
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. These are available for both the two-door and the four-door JK. Today, we're gonna talk about the construction, the features, and, of course, the price of these bars.Rugged Ridge calls these bars both side armor and nerf bars. When I think of nerf bars, I think of the old-school round side steps that don't offer a lot of protection. That is not these. These are definitely side armor. These are going to provide some protection, both on-road and off-road. That being said, they're not gonna be quite as stout as some of the other armor that's out there that looks similar but mounts in a slightly different way, so there is that to consider. If you want something that's going to be a step, that's going to give you a little bit of protection on-road and off-road, this is a good option. If you're looking for even more protection or more of a step, there are some other options out there that would be a better fit. This armor is built from two-inch round tubing that has a 0.12-inch wall thickness, so these are pretty strong and they are going to hold up pretty well. They're covered in a textured black powder coat finish that will match a lot of other aftermarket Jeep accessories and your factory black plastic accents that are already on your Jeep. Now, as I mentioned before, these aren't quite as strong as some other armor that's out there that is a similar design. These, even though the ones you see here are for a four-door, only mount in two locations, in the very front and in the very back. There are some other brands out there, Barricade, for instance, that offers a rail very similar to this, but it has a third mounting point, and that will add some additional strength. These also mount on the body bushing bolts and not the much larger and stronger body bolts that go up through the center of the bushing. That's one more way that these aren't quite as strong as some of the other side armor on the market that is, again, of a similar design. These sliders are designed to be completely bolt-on, which makes the installation really straightforward. The first step in the installation is to remove the larger body mount bolts and the washers that come with them from the factory. That will give you access to the slightly smaller body mount bushing bolts that actually hold these into place. Once you have those four bolts removed, you'll hold the rock slider up into its location and replace those factory bolts. When that's finished, you can replace the much larger body mount bolts, and you're finished. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour, and you won't need any specialty tools to get the job done, just a good set of sockets. However, these are a little bit long and they are a little bit heavy, so if you have an extra set of hands around to help you, that'll speed the process along, or if you have a good tall set of jack stands handy, that'll work as well. When it comes down to the value you get for your dollar when you purchase these rails, I think that you get a lot of it. These are really well-built, the finish on them is nice, they seem to be very strong, and I think, overall, they're a pretty good product if you consider that they are going to be a little bit weaker than some of the other armor on the market that is of a similar design. Again, if you're looking for something that's going to be much stronger, there are some other options out there, Barricade being one of them, that have three mounting points and will mount with a larger bolt versus these ones, and these are gonna be right around the same price as those ones. So, it really comes down to what you want for your Jeep. So, if you're looking for some light armor to protect the rocker area of your Jeep and also provide you with a step, I think this is a good option. As long as you're looking to be able to run light trails and have some protection from door dings, this will work for you. If you want something that's a little bit stronger, check out some of those other brands on the website. We have those available as well. So, that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Construction. Burly and durable, Rugged Ridge's side armor nerf bars shelter your 4-door JK's side panels from the hardest punches that rock crawling or trail obstacles can deal out. It's all thanks to their construction from 2 inch tubular steel with 0.12 inch walls. They also give you a firm stance when climbing in with their textured powder coat.
Protection. These nerf bars shield the rockers and side panels from practically any commonly encountered cross-country hazards. Adding them also makes your JK look rough and ready, a vehicle fit to tackle any challenge.
Accessories. These nerf bars come with all necessary installation hardware.
Application. Using the factory mounting points found on 4-door 2007-2018 JK Wranglers, these bars need no drilling. To see other tools and materials needed, refer to the installation manual.

Look good and fit with Rubi rails
First off, they look great and perform as desired. They do fit on my 2017 Rubicon JKU with the Rubi rails...BUT they require some modification. The four mounting holes do not align in such a way that you can fit a socket inside the mounting pocket. I could get one but I had to do some dremel work to make space on the other bolt (right side rear). These have two mount points, three would have been more sturdy. I also had to loosen the bolts holding the Rubi rails on and push the rail up and re-tighten those bolts so that the nerf bars didn't rattle on the rubi rails. I've seen that they aren't suggested for jack points so not sure how good they would be at serving as serious protection if they can't take the weight of the vehicle.Helpful (3)

Rugged Ridge Side Armor Bars
Nice nerf bars. The instructions didn’t say to remove everything from the area. After removing the rocker bar everything was fine. I should of bought the bars with 3 bolting positions of themHelpful (3)

These look fantastic and completely met our expectations. Tubing is solid and finished nicely. We added the plates for extra functionality...provides a nice solid step surface. I'm only subtracting 1 star because I would have loved to see a third mounting point. Mounting on either end is sufficient, and feels solid, but third point would relieve some stress where bolted on at the ends that may become evident over time. Install time was over an hour with the added step plates.Helpful (4)

These are very well built. I can see how some rock climbers would like them to be a little higher cause they sit lower than the stock step. But it does protect a lot more. I am having an issue with the clunking sound I am in the process of talking with RR to find out a fix. That is the only reason i am giving this a 4/5.Helpful (4)
Can you use a high jack on them for tail tire swaps since there frame mounted?
We would not recommend using these Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars to support the weight of the vehicle as it can damage and bend the bars into the rocker panel.
Can this product be installed with the stock rubi rails?
Have a Rubi and paid particular attention to the customer photos. One clearly looks like it can be, so I pulled trigger. I was wrong. Can say without a doubt, your Rubi rails have to go before you can install.
How much do these nerf bars weigh?
The pair of nerf bars weigh 85 pounds.
Someone mentioned "optional step plates" in a review. I don't see optional step plates in any of the product descriptions. Do they come with steps? or are they just horizontal bars like I see in all the pictures?
The step plates are item #J105891, Rugged Ridge RRC Side Armor Guard Plates.
Does the coating and color of these match the Red Rock 4 X 4 Rock Crawler Front Grille (Item#: J100182)? I bought these side armor nerf bars and they are "textured black" but seem a little more glossier than I imagined and noted in the photos. The photos make it appear more of a textured matte black. I am concerned that if I purchase nerf bars from two different companies that the colors wont match exactly.
The Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars and the RedRock grille are very similar in color and texture. Both will have a slight sheen to the finish, it would not have a matte black finish.
The real answer is that the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars can be mounted with a factory Rubi-rail, since these side-rails are frame mounted and not mounted on the pinch weld.
The Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars can be mounted with a factory Rubi-rails, since these side-rails are frame mounted and not mounted on the pinch weld like the factory Rubi-rails are mounted.
The Rugged Ridge Textured Black Nerf Bars will reuse factory hardware.
The Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars will not work in conjunction with the Enhanced Rubi Rails.
The Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars will be compatible with the factory Rubi Rails since these are only frame mounted.
Thank you for your question. When the step is oriented next to the Jeep, the side with the two bars should be at the top, and the single tube with the cross tubing is located at the bottom hugging the pinch weld of the Jeep. The side with the steeper curve or more hooked would go towards the back of the Jeep.
Yes, the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars will contain the Driver and Passenger side nerf bars along with the mounting hardware.
