Review & Installation Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. These are available for both the two-door and the four-door JK. Today, we're gonna talk about the construction, the features, and, of course, the price of these bars. Rugged Ridge calls these bars both side armor and nerf bars. When I think of nerf bars, I think of the old-school round side steps that don't offer a lot of protection. That is not these. These are definitely side armor. These are going to provide some protection, both on-road and off-road. That being said, they're not gonna be quite as stout as some of the other armor that's out there that looks similar but mounts in a slightly different way, so there is that to consider. If you want something that's going to be a step, that's going to give you a little bit of protection on-road and off-road, this is a good option. If you're looking for even more protection or more of a step, there are some other options out there that would be a better fit. This armor is built from two-inch round tubing that has a 0.12-inch wall thickness, so these are pretty strong and they are going to hold up pretty well. They're covered in a textured black powder coat finish that will match a lot of other aftermarket Jeep accessories and your factory black plastic accents that are already on your Jeep. Now, as I mentioned before, these aren't quite as strong as some other armor that's out there that is a similar design. These, even though the ones you see here are for a four-door, only mount in two locations, in the very front and in the very back. There are some other brands out there, Barricade, for instance, that offers a rail very similar to this, but it has a third mounting point, and that will add some additional strength. These also mount on the body bushing bolts and not the much larger and stronger body bolts that go up through the center of the bushing. That's one more way that these aren't quite as strong as some of the other side armor on the market that is, again, of a similar design. These sliders are designed to be completely bolt-on, which makes the installation really straightforward. The first step in the installation is to remove the larger body mount bolts and the washers that come with them from the factory. That will give you access to the slightly smaller body mount bushing bolts that actually hold these into place. Once you have those four bolts removed, you'll hold the rock slider up into its location and replace those factory bolts. When that's finished, you can replace the much larger body mount bolts, and you're finished. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour, and you won't need any specialty tools to get the job done, just a good set of sockets. However, these are a little bit long and they are a little bit heavy, so if you have an extra set of hands around to help you, that'll speed the process along, or if you have a good tall set of jack stands handy, that'll work as well. When it comes down to the value you get for your dollar when you purchase these rails, I think that you get a lot of it. These are really well-built, the finish on them is nice, they seem to be very strong, and I think, overall, they're a pretty good product if you consider that they are going to be a little bit weaker than some of the other armor on the market that is of a similar design. Again, if you're looking for something that's going to be much stronger, there are some other options out there, Barricade being one of them, that have three mounting points and will mount with a larger bolt versus these ones, and these are gonna be right around the same price as those ones. So, it really comes down to what you want for your Jeep. So, if you're looking for some light armor to protect the rocker area of your Jeep and also provide you with a step, I think this is a good option. As long as you're looking to be able to run light trails and have some protection from door dings, this will work for you. If you want something that's a little bit stronger, check out some of those other brands on the website. We have those available as well. So, that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Construction. Burly and durable, Rugged Ridge's side armor nerf bars shelter your 4-door JK's side panels from the hardest punches that rock crawling or trail obstacles can deal out. It's all thanks to their construction from 2 inch tubular steel with 0.12 inch walls. They also give you a firm stance when climbing in with their textured powder coat.

Protection. These nerf bars shield the rockers and side panels from practically any commonly encountered cross-country hazards. Adding them also makes your JK look rough and ready, a vehicle fit to tackle any challenge.

Accessories. These nerf bars come with all necessary installation hardware.

Application. Using the factory mounting points found on 4-door 2007 - 2017 JK Wranglers, these bars need no drilling. To see other tools and materials needed, refer to the installation manual.

  • Have a Rubi and paid particular attention to the customer photos. One clearly looks like it can be, so I pulled trigger. I was wrong. Can say without a doubt, your Rubi rails have to go before you can install.

    PITA installation

The bars look great and feel sturdy once installed. Good luck with the installation though. The video leads you to believe these bolt right on, but I had to cut a hole in the side of one to get the last nut tightened down to spec. For the money, you should probably just buy some that have three mounting points and use the actual body mount bolts rather than the little bushing bolts.

    Cool Rock bars

Overall pretty good product and easy to install. It might help to put a big "this way forward" sticker on the top or something. Also the square mounting area where the chassis bolts go through could be just 1/8 bigger. I had an annoying squeak which I finally traced to my chassis washer rubbing on the inside of that mounting box on the nerf bar. Had to zip wheel the washer to add clearance.

    Heavy Duty

These are very heavy duty bars. You will need a helper to install as the holes do not quite line up. A large pry bar (3 foot or longer) is helpful once you get each side into position. Pry the mounts into position with the two studs and tap into place with a dead blow mallet. Keep the pry bar handy when torqueing the two nuts as clearance for the socket is almost non-existent. Instructions do not show which way around to position the mounts. I put the curved back end towards the back.

Rugged Ridge Textured Black Side Armor Nerf Bars

I purchased this Jeep three years, my third one in 25 years. Installation was straight forward and simple, the combination of Nerf-Bars, rocker rails, and 1.25 lift kit added a great look. It took less than an hour to install Nerf-Bars The tubes have welded ends and the textured coating is far superior to bumpers I have added in the past. previous brands had a painted on coating that flaked and peeled within a few months. this far more durable. The textured coating matches the Rugged Ridge front bumper, rear bumper and Smittybilt rocker rails that I installed as well. Nice product and easy install

Great product for the price. Bolts right on. I did it on my lunch break in less than an hour. The only issue was getting a socket onto the 8 nuts. It was pretty cramped. Other than that great product.

    Nerf Bars

I had barricade sliders before, was t-boned in my jeep and they saved my legs! I decided to switch it up! These bars give you more room to stand up on and get into jeep if you're shorter. Great compliments from people. Fitting is pretty tight, body shop had to bend the metal clamps in order to get the correct fit. Overall great product!

A great step that looks like rocker protection

So happy I got this. With the lifts im about to do, my wife and kids need some help getting up. Looks super cool compared to the lame basic steps. Im sure it will offer some protection from rocks but dont try to rely on it to go on a pure off road rig. This is still strong and no flex when my 210lbs stands on it. 5*

This product has a tough look! Very durable and easy access in and out of your vehicle.

If your looking for an after market upgrade when it comes to side steps, you are better off getting this product.

    Great Purchase

I bought these after lifting my Jeep 3 inches and putting 35 inch tires on. They came well packaged and undamaged. I took a few minutes to look at the instructions, which were clear and easy to understand. I looked under the jeep and got all my tools ready. The install was easy; it is important to note though that you will need a socket extension and a deep well socket for the 16mm bolts. Once the side bars are on, you won't be able to torque the bolts without a socket extension. they look great on the vehicle and now my wife and daughter can climb in without any problems.

    Sturdy and Look Amazing

This is a great product. It gives you the step you want with some protection. As long as you have shoes on that space between the bars is barely felt. I actually like the space because I use the outer bar to push myself in with my foot. It also isn't so big that it doesn't get in the way of people who don't want to use the step. I have only had them on for a week, but I have gotten many compliments on them, and other Jeepers taking pictures of them for ideas for their own Jeep. My friend who is a mechanic installed them for me, and it took him less than 10 minutes.

Great looking rails for the price

Bought these rails to replace the mostly plastic and rather blah looking OEM side steps. The finish is nice and the overall look is fantastic once installed. The installation was much more difficult than it should have been. There is minimal clearance for the outside attachment points and like most other folks who've reviewed these, I found myself using a pry bar to get enough room to get a socket in there. I also had to grind off one side of the washer on one of the body mounts to keep it from rubbing and squeaking. After all was said and done I'm still happy with my purchase. Just know ahead of time that you're going to have some clearance issues and have those tools ready.

Black side armor bars 2017 rubicon

I recently purchased my side bars with plates too go with them for me and my daughter too get in and out. When attaching the first bar too see how it fit the plates had no room too fit because of the steel bar were the door meets, luckily I did pre screw plates on bars. Returning plates were easy and convenient no hassle. I did have too install several washers too stop the knocking when hitting bumps. Also if you like the flex in your jeep it will stiff in your ride. All around they look awesome now.

Was cry happy with the look, but the brackets on either end of the nerf bars make reinstalling the forwardmost and reward most nuts very difficult.
