    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This is available for both two-door and four-door Wranglers. So make sure you get the right one for your Jeep. This side armor is for those of you who hit the trails on the weekends and need some casual protection from the occasional bump on the trail. And also it's something that's a really useful step. If that's what you're looking for and you want something that installs really easily, these are a pretty nice option. This side armor is really well-built. It's constructed of inch-and-three-quarter diameter, .12-inch wall thickness steel, and everything is texture powder coated to resist corrosion and rust down the line. The 2-door version weighs in at about 65 pounds, and the 4-door version that you see here weighs in at about 75 pounds. There are a couple different ways that side armor can mount to the Jeep. One of those is onto the body mounts, and the other is onto the pinch seam. Well, this is the latter. These are designed to mount to the pinch seam and to the bottom of the tub without any drilling. They'll use all the factory holes and the hardware that's included in the package. The downside to side armor that mounts in this fashion is that they're not quite as strong as the armor that mounts to the body mounts. So they're a great step. They look good, and they provide some protection, but if you're out on the trail every single weekend, dragging the Jeep over rocks, you're probably gonna want something that's a little bit tougher. These are designed to be bolt-on, which makes installation really easy. They'll attach to the Jeep with the hardware that's included in the box. One thing that's important to remember is that you can't have these installed with any other side steps or even your factory ruby rails. If you're bolting them onto an '07 to 2010 JK, the holes that are in the tub are not threaded. So you'll use the threaded inserts that come in the box. If your Jeep is a 2011 to 2016, those holes are already threaded, and you won't need the inserts. The bottom line is don't be worried if you have a little bit of extra hardware left over when you're done with the installation. These do come with really good instructions, but because they span different year ranges and the installs can be a little bit different, they can get a little bit complicated to look at. Don't be afraid when you get these home to take them out of the box and hold them up to the side of the Jeep. It'll become really evident quickly which holes you'll use and if you need those threaded inserts or not. The whole installation should take you about two hours, and it will be helpful to have an extra set of hands around because, again, these things do have some weight to them. As far as tools go, you won't need anything but a normal socket set and some wrenches. I think you do get a lot of value for what you pay for these. They feel really solidly built. They look good. The coating is nice. They definitely work as a step, and they'll give you some of that casual protection that we talked about. I wouldn't expect these to work like much more expensive, much stronger side armor. Again, if you're using the Jeep every weekend on the trails and you're really beating up your armor, I would recommend getting something heavier duty that'll probably be a little bit more expensive, but for the weekend wheeler and someone who wants something that doubles as a step and that's a really easy install, these are a nice choice. So all in all, if you're looking for bolt-on side armor that will give you some protection, work as a very useful step, and change up the look of your Jeep, all without breaking the bank, I think you're looking in the right place. So that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find them right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Dual Function. RedRock 4x4 Side Armor gives your 2-door JK Wrangler an aggressive off-road appearance while providing practical undercarriage protection from brush and other trail hazards. Plus RedRock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor also doubles as a convenient step for easy entry into your lifted vehicle.

Heavy Duty Construction. Manufactured from heavy duty 1.75" diameter (0.12" wall thickness) steel tubing, this RedRock 4x4 Side Armor is completed in a textured black powder coat finish for aggressive good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Easy, Bolt-on Installation. The RedRock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor is engineered to be a direct bolt-on upgrade using just basic hand tools, so there is no drilling or cutting required for a clean straight forward installation.

Application. This RedRock 4x4 Wrangler Side Armor is designed to fit 2007-2018 2-door Jeep Wrangler JKs. Includes driver and passenger side.

What size bolts and washers are used with these rails? The video shows galvanized and I think black bolts and washers would look a lot better. Please advise, thanks!

    Chris

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor now uses black finished bolts, as opposed to the zinc coated bolts shown in the video. The updated hardware can be seen in our product images.

Do these still serve as a good step in winter conditions or would it be better to get the RedRock side steps?

    JeremyW

    • RedRock 4x4's side step would be a better designated step in winter conditions because of its durable non-slip step pads.

Can these rails be used as a lifting point for hi-lift jacks?

    cms39666

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor would not be suggested to use as a lift point since these are installed on the pinch seam and not the frame.

Could this rail be used as a lifting point for a hi lift?

    BlaineF

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor should not be used as a lifting point. Using the side armor in this way will result in breaking and possible other damage to your Jeep.

Is this just one rail? or is it two? also is this great for a step as well, I only go off-roading once or twice a month so I would like to know if it is recommended to have it as a good use for a step most of the time, but still having it being used for off-roading every once or twice a month.

    JeepFanatic

    • This RedRock 4x4 Side Armor is a set of 2 rails and can be utilized as a side step as well. It is designed to be multi-functional like that.

      Good Purchase

Pretty heavy which is what I expected. It suggests to use a lift to center the slides and line up the holes - which I don't have - so I set them on the box, which got it close enough. I've banged it up a few times and so far it's solid! Only reason I didn't do 5-stars on appearance is because this model hangs down a couple inches. Making my clearance a little less on the sides. Other than that, I really like them.

      Great product

I installed these with my 2 daughters and had them do most the work. Kit comes complete with all the hardware to account for variations in Jeep models. These things really look great and give you a nice step when getting in/out of the rear seats. Also, they'll certainly add a nice extra protrusion of protection against other people opening their doors into you. Amazing that these came shipped for less then $200 but I will say, they're attached with 2 bolts under the Jeep and another couple bolts along the side, I would NOT want to count on getting the entire Jeep hung-up on boulders and expect these things to hang in there without bending or other issues. I'd say these are mostly for looks and modest protection, absolutely not for hardcore rock crawlers but for the money and ease of installation, outstanding! The Jeep looks much better as it rounds-out the fenders with more width

      Good one, needs ss bolts

Solid piece, easy to install, second pair of hands could help a lot. I'm not sure about bolts, rust could be a problem. Going to replace with stainless steel ones.

      Side armor step

Great product. Easy install, I could hear the rocks bounce off it while offroading. My wife loves it as a step. Really helps out with the 2 inch lift.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (07-18 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

      Great looking, functional add on!

Fairly easy install, after you sort out the hardware you don't need (or need, instructions not real clear, but easy to figure out). Love how they look, compared to the Rubi-rails I had, plus they are a great step. May not be the strongest sliders (from what I've read) but will offer more protection than what I had.

Had it on my jeep for a little over a year. Paint is bubbling and rusting out. Junk. Don’t buy them.

      Looks great - easy install!

This was my first mod to my new Wrangler and they look awesome! Installed by myself in about an hour and a half. As someone else suggested here, I just used a cooler to prop up the rails while bolting everything in. First one took a little longer but the second was a breeze. Works great as a step and really changes the look in a cool way.

      BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!

I looked all over and similar side armor bars were almost $100 more. Great product. These were the first thing I ever installed myself on my jeep and it was easy. The only thing is the instructions that come with it are not very clear. Some parts you do not need if you have a newer model. I have a 2015 so I did not need half of the parts to install it. A simple youtube video can easily explain how to install these. Once I realized how to do it, install took me about 30 min.

      Very Nice Rails

The rails are great - just the look and protection I was looking for. Product was packaged well and it had all the required hardware. Only reason why I give it 4 stars (vice 5), is there are ZERO instructions in the box.

      Side Armor - Great add

I am very happy about this purchase Easy to install. only advice for those working on newer jK's is that the body holes may have to be re-tapped as mine were full of sand and the effects of road salt. They look great and took only about 1.5 hours to install
