Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Smittybilt SRC Side Armor, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This armor is available for both two-door and four-door Wranglers. This is for anyone looking to add some light side armor protection to their Jeep, and they're a really useful step to help them get into or out of their stock or lifted height Wrangler. Now, this armor is a little bit pricey, in my opinion, for what you get. But it does give you that light protection that we talked about, and it is a pretty good step. This side armor is built from inch and three-quarter diameter, .12-inch wall thickness steel tubing, and it's covered in this textured black powder-coated finish that will help to resist corrosion and rust down the line. It also does a good job at matching a lot of other Jeep accessories and the factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. As you can see here, it has two nice, large stepping surfaces, each that have a couple of holes drilled in them, which makes them a little bit more nonslip and adds a little bit of detail to the step. Now, these are pretty well-built. The welds look solid, and they're built of a heavy material. However, it's the way that they mount that makes me think they're not quite as strong as other armor on the market. These only mount in two locations, instead of three, on the four-door that we're looking at here, and these mount using the body bushing bolts, instead of the larger main body bolts. There's a couple of reasons that this seems to be a little bit weaker than some of the other armor on the market. These'll install pretty easily onto the Jeep because they're designed to be completely bolt-on and they actually use all of your factory hardware. Now, they do have a little bit of weight to them, and especially the four-doors that are a little bit larger mean that you'll probably wanna have an extra set of hands around or at least a tall set of jack stands to hold up the weight while you get everything lined up. The installation process is pretty straightforward. You'll remove two bolts from each of the body mounts on the front and the rear of the Jeep, put the step in place, and replace the bolts. That's all there is to it. You won't need any specialty tools at all, just a regular socket set, and the whole process shouldn't take you more than an hour. Like I said before, these are a little bit pricey for what you get, in my opinion. I would like to see these mount a little bit more securely because these are designed to be armor and give you a little bit more ground clearance. Again, in my opinion, these act more like a step than armor, even though they're called side armor and they're priced like side armor. For the same amount of money as this side armor, you could get something that is gonna hold up a little bit better, even though it might not work quite as well as a step. So if you're looking for side armor of this design and you have the budget for it, this is a really well-built piece and the finish on it is really solid. However, if you're looking to do really hardcore off-roading, I would probably take the money that you would've put into these and put them into something that is a little bit more armor-like in the way that it mounts and the ground clearance that it provides. So that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Side Armor, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here, at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Construction. Designed as an extra tough one-piece construction, Smittybilt's side armor is fabricated from 1.75 inch steel tubing with 0.12 inch walls and a dual girder design. The textured black powder coat finish defeats rust and gives your feet purchase when you use the armor as a step into or out of your Wrangler. The design gives your Jeep a brutally competent look.

Protection. Mounting this wheel-to-wheel side armor deflects all manner of hazards from your Wrangler's sides and undercarriage, shielding against the biggest rocks and branches a remote trail can throw at you. It also offers a solid step.

Application. These side armor pieces attach to your 2007-2018 JK Wrangler, 4-door models only, with a simple bolt-on attachment.

  • Hello, unfortunately these would not fit with the Stock Rubi Rails. You would have to use something like these: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-rock-sliders-jk-j100289.html

    Great investment

I agonized over a quality step/rock slider for weeks. I needed something that would protect the body when wheeling AND help my wife and kids climb in when they are headed out to school. These hit the mark. Perfect fit, quality finish and durable. I've bashed these things a few times pretty hard and there's no sign of metal fatigue or other damage. Plus, getting in and out of the jeep would be impossible for vertically challenged folk like my family without them. Install was simple, about a half hour, and that included trying to find the right sockets in my pile of tools. im glad I went with these steps.

    Smittybilt SRC Side Armor

Very happy with the product, I spent weeks deciding on which slider/step combo to buy. My main concern was fitment and quality, I'm not sure if the product has improved recently or not. Mine came in superb condition the box was a little torn up. Though the product inside was heavily bubble wrapped. As for fitment there was no issues the post I've read on several forums about having to hammer/pry to get the bolts to line up did not exist. My 14 year old daughter and I took no more then 5 mins on each side to do the install. The 2 holes on each side were slotted and popped right into place. I had her hold one end up while I finger tightend the nuts on the other and moved over and torqued it down. The step function improved my wife and kids ability to easily get into the jeep with 35s and a 3 inch lift. Will no doubt by more smittybilt products in the future.

    Excellent product

I gave it a 4 and not a 5, because there are only two mounting points. Three would have been better. But still happy with the product.

    wife loves it

My jeep was a little tall and my short wife had problems getting into the vehicle, so I started looking for something that would help her get into the jeep a little easier. I found these Smittybilt side armor, and thought that they did not look too bad and the price wasn't bad. I looked at all the photos from other customers to see what other jeeps look like and I liked what i saw. Got them in a few days and I installed them in a couple of hours. Great product, now my wife says let's take the jeep every where we go.

Theses are great rails. Make your Jeep look different than everything that comes off the lot. These are so well built and sturdy. Not to mention, you will never get a door ding from a parking lot.

Had no issues installing it. Took all of a few minutes with the help of a buddy. Looks good and have already scraped it a bit out in the trails, but that's part of its job. Works great as a step and protection.

    Sweet

Insanely painless install. I was prepared for a headache when a few reviews and even instructions warned of possible need to modify openings. Not the case. Only had time to slurp down like two beers it went so fast. Once on it held my weight no issue, so I'm confident in the steps. And the placement give me assurance for side rail protection and pesky door dings. They look like they belong on the jeep. Seamless, tight fit. Couldn't be happier.

Easy installation, rugged design, smooth lines!

I have a sport that did not previously have step up bars/side rails so all I had to do was back the bolts out on the frame and, BOOM, in in minutes! Great design, gives a beefy look. The rail on the bottom gives an illusion that it lines right up with front and back fenders so that they do not look out of place and seem like they are a factory option from Jeep. I strongly recommend.

I love them! I too had a problem with the fit. but I ended up using a hydro jack and bent it into place to fit. the best thing about them is that they provide protection in parking lots too from peoples doors, and protection on the trail too. lmao

    ok for looks

I rated these a 4 because there are only two points to bolt to frame. They would be much better if they had the third connection to the frame. They look good and went on really easy, no drilling or anything needed, but they are weak in the middle, would not trust if doing any serious rock crawling. Ok for light duty and as a step

These look great on the vehicle took a little time and maneuvering to get side steps to fit alittle jerking and banging. But overall satisfied with product.
