    Review & Installation Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com. This is my review of the Barricade Trail Force HD rear bumper fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This bumper is available as you see it here or with a tire carrier option for those of you who have a larger spare tire and are looking for a better way to support it. This bumper is for those of you who are looking for the look and also the features that a plate steel bumper offers over your plastic factory rear bumper. This will provide some additional protection to the rear of the Jeep in both on road and off road situations. It also includes two D-ring mounts for recovery points and a third two-inch receiver in the center also for recovery points. This bumper, in particular, is a fairly simple design and is going to be less expensive than some of the other ones on the market, but you can still get the look and the features that you're after. This bumper is built from three-sixteenths inch steel and it's covered in a two stage textured black powder coat finish. The textured finish that this has does a nice job of matching a lot of other off road accessories that you may have added to your Jeep and also matches the factory plastic accents on the Jeep very well. The bumper includes this nice deep cutout for your spare tire. So, if you're not running the tire carrier and you do have a slightly larger than stock spare in the factory spare tire mounting location, this will give you some additional clearance so that spare tire doesn't hit the bumper when you open and close the tailgate. This bumper also has welded on D-ring mounts to give you some really nice strong recovery points. And, a nice feature about this bumper and a lot of other Barricade bumpers is that if it has D-ring mounts, it also includes the D-rings right in the box. That just keeps you from having to buy some additional parts. Another recovery point is right here in the middle. That's a two-inch receiver. Any sort of recovery tow bar that you can put into your regular two-inch receiver will go in here providing one more area for recovery. This bumper comes with all the hardware and all the brackets that you need to attach it to the Jeep. It has two nut plates that'll slide inside the frame rails and a sandwich plate that actually goes right behind this two-inch receiver, again, adding some additional strength. This whole bumper weighs in at about 83 pounds. That means it is beefy. It's strong. It's well built. It's gusseted. It's going to be plenty of strength for any on road or off road obstacles that you might throw at it. And, you can use it for recoveries all day long without the risk of damaging it. This bumper is designed to install on your Jeep very easily without the need to cut or drill anything. The first step in getting it installed on the Jeep is to remove your factory rear bumper. To do that, there are two bolts that hold that factory bumper onto the cross member and four bolts, two on each side, that hold it onto the rear frame rails. Once the factory rear bumper is removed, you'll want to remove the factory tow hook if you have one on your Jeep. That'll be on the driver side and mount right through the frame rail as well. You'll have to get that out of the way to install the nut plates that are used to install your new bumper. Once the tow hook's out of the way, you can slide the nut plates into the frame rails, then lift the bumper into place. Honestly, this is the most difficult part of installing this bumper. Because it does weight close to 85 pounds, you'll definitely want to have an extra set of hands around. Or if a friend isn't available to help, a jack and some blocks of wood or some tall jack stands will suffice. Once you have the bumper hoisted into place, you can use the included hardware to bolt through the bumper through the frame rail and into those nut plates. Once you have it snugged down but not tight, you'll install the sandwich plate which goes on the inside of the rear cross member. A couple of those bolts can be a little bit difficult to get to, but you don't have to take anything apart. You just have to use some extensions and get a little bit creative to get all the bolts installed. Once you have all of the bolts installed, you can make sure the bumper is sitting true and square and tighten everything down. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour. You won't need any specialty tools, just a good socket set. I think this bumper is really fairly priced for what you get. It's going to provide some additional protection for your Jeep on road and off road, especially when you compare it to that factory plastic bumper. It also gives you three recovery points which makes it functional off road. In my opinion, it makes your Jeep look a little bit more rough and tough and more like an off road vehicle than the plastic bumper does. If you're looking for a plate steel bumper to replace your factory plastic bumper to add some additional protection to your Jeep, add some recovery points and also add some style, I definitely recommend taking a look at this Barricade bumper. It's going to give you the style you're looking for and add some features, all while saving you some money. That's my review of the Barricade Trail Force HD rear bumper fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

I'm receiving this today, my JKU is waiting bare to have it bolted on. However, I'm reading up for the install, and at the very bottom of the description, it says that the hitch is "not rated for towing"?! Why on earth would you include a built-in hitch that is not rated for towing?! That's kind of like having wheels that are not rated for driving on!

    JimS

    • We do apologize that you ran into this issue! At this time Barricade does not offer an tow rated bumpers. Their hitch is intended for recovery purposes and some customers use it for accessory racks, like bike racks.

Will this fit with a Barricade Roof rack? I just installed a Barricade roof rack for the holidays. It required the removal of the stock bumper and tow hook. The rear mount covers the outside of the frame, how does this bumper bolt on? Thanks, Alternativeshots

    Bayjunkie

    • It bolts onto the four holes the stock trailer hitch attached to on the frame and two holes on both sides of the frame. The driver side mounts onto the same holes that were used by the rear tow hook on my 2012 JKU.

I'm interested in the Barricade rear bumper but I already have a hitch installed on my jeep. Does the bumper also come without the hitch already on it, or only with the 2" hitch built in? Thanks. I saw another question about cutting off the hitch but nothing specifically about whether or not the bumper also comes without the hitch attached. It seems like something Barricade would/should make as most jeeps already have hitches on them.

    RobertF

    • The Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper has a built in 2" Receiver. this is not rated for towing and does not have a location for safety chains to attach. This is a feature added in for utilizing accessories that attach to a 2" reciever.

How does this bumper work with the Garvin Adventure Rack? The Garvin Rack is meant to integrate with the factory bumpers but do the mounting points for the rack and this bumper allow them to be both installed on the same vehicle?

    JacobF

    • The Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper can be utilized when installing the Garvin Adventure Rack, and would require following the directions below: http://1.cdn.lib.extremeterrain.com/guides/J25112-cust.pdf

The handle for the tire carrier partially blocks the licence plate. Has anyone had any issues with law enforcement complaining about this?

    • We have not heard any reports of issues with law enforcement with the Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper, however you may want to check with a local police station to ensure no issues should arise.

      Good Value

This bumper was a perfect fit and installed easily. It's well constructed without being overly heavy. Welds are good. I've already used the D-rings for two recoveries with no issues. The only issue is the powder coating. It seems to be fairly low quality or perhaps prep work was poor. One of the mounting points had a 1/2x3/4 inch area where the coating had chipped before I received it. When I bumped a corner lightly on the floor during installation, another small piece flaked off. Obviously, this will not stand up to even the lightest contact with rocks. Over all though, I think it was worth the investment. I'll just have to keep some rattle cans on hand for touch up.

Review from Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper w/ Tire Carrier (07-18 Wrangler JK)

Not even 1 year old- very cheaply made

I bought this thinking I was getting an amazing deal! "You get what you pay for" was the case. My JK is well maintained and garaged! I haven't even had my rear bumper for 1 year and the powder coat is peeling off, it is rusting out, and the tire carrier is extremely stiff- it takes a lot of effort to open and close. The tire carrier has been throughly greased regularly and still give me issues. Do NOT waste your money on this. Spend the couple extra hundred for a better quality one

      Happy with my choice

Pretty stout Bumper, no rattles, love the latch design, easy install. As far as fit, the only thing I would have like to see was more adjustment to be able to pull the bumper away from the body about an inch. As for appearance, could be a bit better, seams on one of the tire carrier tubes is pointing upwards so you can see the seam thru the powder coating, a few chips on the powder coating but this is due to the very poor packaging, other than that I am happy with it.

Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper

Purchased this bumper for my son JK and was hoping it would be of good quality. The bumper arrived early and in good shape. Install was easy as well as straight forward. We have had to bumper no even a year now and the powder coating is coming off and the latching mechanism which keeps the swing look in place to the bumper has already broken. Will contact Extreme Terrain to see what they can do to help with this. Overall the bumper is of good quality. Wish the powder coating was better and had not already had parts failure.

      Expensive with cheap quality

I got this bumper/carrier in may of 2016 for over $750.00. I installed it in June of 2016 and the installation was quite easy. However, there was some major bubbling of the cheap powder coat finish on the bumper on the rear left corner. Fast forward to today, and there is no longer any solid finish on the drivers side of the bumper and it has began to rust, in less than a year... Oh and not to mention their 2" receiver is really about 1-7/8", meaning that no 2" receiver on the planet fits it. Barricade's correction for this issue is to give me a touch up paint kit and call it a day. I am incredibly dissatisfied with this product for the price that I paid. It is a solid bumper, but it has its fair share of major flaws.

Review from Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper w/ Tire Carrier (07-18 Wrangler JK)

good bumper has some issues that need resolved

Hello everyone, i just bought and installed this bumper and tire carrier overall it is ok. issue that i found with the bumper is the trailer hitch. The bumper has a built in trailer hitch, that is one of the reasons i pick this bumper. the issue there is no where to hook up safety chains. i am going to have to modify a 700$ bumper so i can pull my boat. Other than that bumper fits really nice and is very easy to install. The main issue i ran into is the tire carrier. On the right side of the bumper where the tire carrier mounts so it can pivot, is way too tight it took me 45 minutes to get the tire carrier to slide onto the bumper, I know it is supposed to be tight but it is over kill. the next issue is where the bracket bolts on to the tire carrier to mount you tire the bolts are too short. The bolts come with locking nuts, when it is bolted on the, bolts are not long enough to go through the nylon to make sure the bolts dont back out. The bolts need to be about 1/4 longer. next issue is the supplied lug nuts that come with the tire carrier. the lug nuts are a 21mm. Factory lug nuts are a 19mm. The issue is if put on the supplied nuts, and it get a flat tire my lug wrench will not fit the 21mm nuts. to fix this issue i retapped my factory lug nuts to fit the tire carrier. With the issues I found on this product I dont Think I would recommend this product to another person. If I did i would make sure to point out all the issue i found.

      Nice Bumper

A nice bumper and well made but there are manufacturing issues. I spent 6 hours trying to fit the gate to the receiver post. The gate sleeve did not slide down on the post, the post was either too large or the sleeve too small. I could only get it about a quarter of the way down before it bound up and I had to get a hydraulic jack to push it back off the post. I spent hours sanding and smoothing the post until the sleeve finally nested properly on the post. Every other word out of my mouth was a bad one. Aesthetically and structurally the bumper is awesome. I also have an issue with the disclaimer that the trailer receiver is not tow rated. Why did you put one on if you can't back it up. They should have left a cut out in their bumper so that I could have kept the factory tow receiver. I spent some time looking at the hitch I pulled off and the one on the bumper. In my opinion, there is no reason this is not tow rated. I'm not a structural engineer but it's just as beefy as the piece I took off. My guess is that they couldn't get a legal release from whatever government sector provides approval for tow rating equipment??

      A real bumper!

I was shocked the first time I removed the stock bumper on my JK. It is little more than two milk jugs tied together with no real impact protection. Started looking for an aftermarket unit to replace it and was put off by some of the prices. I then found the Barricade rear bumper at a reasonable price and took a chance. I was very impressed when I received it as to workmanship and ease of installation. Looks great and is made of real steel!

      Nice bumper-terrible finish

I bought a set of these in February of 2016 and they seemed nice. The installation is easy and they look great. However, the paint started chipping after a month or so and after a year it's flaking and peeling off. They have a 3 year warranty, but the finish isn't covered.

Best rear bumper for the money

Had to wait over a month for this bumper to get in stock because it's the "best bang for buck" and because I have the Barricade front bumper and wanted to match it up. Worth the wait....good fit but a litttle heavy and awkward to install. You'll need a buddy or two to hold in place so you can bolt it on. Jeep didnt make it any easier as I had to remove factory hitch, tow hook, etc.. D-rings are a little noisy on the rear bumper, but could be fixed with a little creative thinking. Overall, I'm happy with it.

This bumper was easy to install with a friend. Evening fit perfectly and lined up great. I am very happy with the look of the bumper and glad to get the tire carrier off the tailgate. It would be nice if they included rubber stoppers mounted to the tire carrier to prevent it from hitting the tailgate when both are opened.

Review from Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper w/ Tire Carrier (07-18 Wrangler JK)

      Good but not Great

For the money this is a good bumper. I purchased mine 1.5 years ago. There is no grease fitting on the tire swing hinge. After a year the tire swing is very hard to swing open. Left unattended it is very very very hard to open. I cleaned and re-greased the hinge to repair it but soon after it needed done again. I see a lot of reviews saying the handle rattles. This happens to me as well. There is a Allen wrench fitting that allows you to tighten that and minimize the rattle. Of course there is also some rattle from the d-rings. And last but not least the paint job on these are sub-par. However the price is substantially lower than other bumpers with tire carriers. So I gave this bumper a pretty good review star wise because of the price/looks/fit are all worth the price on this one in my opinion.
