      Video Review & Installation

Ryan: The Smittybilt Bowless Combo Soft Top with Tinted Windows is for those of you that have a two-door 2007 to 2018 JK that are looking for a frameless soft top. So, there're gonna be couple of different choices when you're looking at soft tops. They're going to be replacement soft tops that just going to be soft material, designed to go on a good working soft top frame and that's going to be a very factory style top. And those are gonna be for those of your that already have a good working frame and are just looking to replace those soft components. Then you have full replacement soft tops or complete replacement soft tops that are not only going to include the soft components but also the frame and all of the hardware to make a top that looks and functions very much like a factory top. And finally, you're going to have aftermarket tops like this one that don't look or function like a factory top that give you different features, and that's what this bowless top is all about. So, this is not going to give you your safari top of your factory top. It's not going to give you a factory top look. This is going to be very, very different. This is still going to be a very easy one out of three wrench installation. We'll talk a little bit about that in just a second. So, what this bowless soft top is going to give you is a fastback style. So, it's going to give you a style where the rear window follows the curve of the sport cage in the back of the Jeep, and that's a profile that a lot of you guys are after. This is also going to give you the ability to remove all three windows and that's really where the combo top portion of this really comes into play. So, if you remove those three windows, what you're left with is a safari style top, providing shade to the front seat and the back seat passengers in your JK. Then, you can zipper those windows back in and you're back to a more weather tight top. This is going to require some factory components. You are going to have to have factory or OEM style door surrounds, windshield header, and tailgate bar with brackets in order to get this top installed. So, do keep that in mind when you're purchasing this top and when you're figuring the total cost of the top because those are additional components that you're going to have to purchase. Now, barring those components if you already have them, this is going to be a fairly inexpensive option for you. Still gonna be a nice high quality top, but it's gonna be less expensive than some of the other tops that are going to give you the fastback styling, they're also going to give you additional features. This doesn't have a ton of additional features built into it. It does have some. We're gonna talk about those in a minute. But if you're looking for a top that has a ton of features, you're gonna have to step up into a higher price range. So, as for the construction of this top, this is going to be a black diamond material. This is going to be similar to what came on the earlier model JKs right out of the factory. It is going to be a pretty similar material. It's pretty high quality stuff. It's gonna hold up pretty well for you. It's pretty standard soft top material I would say. On the inside you are going to have some of those features. You're going to have a zipper mesh pocket in the corner of the top here. You're also going to have some MOLLE style straps here. So, if you have anything that attaches to a MOLLE strap system, you're gonna be able to attach that right on to your soft top. You're also going to have a soft top window storage bag built right into this top. So, when you do zip the windows out, you're gonna have a bag you can put the windows in and then you could lift up a flap in the back of your now safari top and store your windows in there. So, you're now putting them behind the back seat or on the back seat, you don't have to leave them at home, you can bring them with you and it's going to keep them nice and safe. So, if a pop up rain shower does happen, you can just pull them out and zipper them back in which is a nice feature. Other than that, as I mentioned you are going to need some factory style components to get this top installed. This bowless combo top from Smittybilt is gonna run you $400. I do think that's a pretty good deal for what you're gonna here. As I said, there are fastback style tops that are gonna cost roughly twice as much as this but they're going to have additional features and the quality is going to be a little bit higher, the build quality and the material quality. But if you're looking to save a couple of dollars, you want to get something on a little bit more of a budget, you're not interested on those features, then I think this is gonna be a really nice choice. And now, a member of the install team is gonna show you how to install this top. Male: First, we're gonna go ahead and remove our factory top and frame from our Jeep. Now, this is very simple. I'm pretty sure you've put the top down on your Jeep more than a few times. Let's go ahead and get out top down and I'll show you how to get everything out of the way. We're gonna begin by removing our side windows and our rear window. Now, you will need to keep your rear window bar, but that's not a big deal, your Jeep should already have one. Begin, take your top down like you normally do on any nice summer day. Just unzip your side windows and your rear window and then we're gonna go ahead and fold it down. Okay. Now, that we have our top folded back, what we're gonna do is we're gonna come in here and disconnect our factory top from the roll bar brackets. Once we have those disconnected, we can go ahead and just pull our top off and out of the way and I can show you how to get our new one in place. Now, on our Jeep, our top has two Torx bits holding our arms on. Yours might actually have the push pins that come factory in it. Ours does not. Just gonna go ahead and use my T30 Torx bit to remove this for now and we'll get our top out of the way. All right. Now, that's out of the way, let's go ahead and get started with the installation of our new Smittybilt top. Now, we're gonna get our table out here. I'm gonna show you how to connect our new top to our header panel and then we can go ahead and slide it up inside of our Jeep. Now, before we put our top on our Jeep, we're gonna have to go ahead and get this here window channel bar in place. Now, it's super simple. It's held in with snaps, you're just gonna go ahead and slide it in under the front edge of our top. And then, just secure down all the snaps along the edge. All right. Now, we're gonna go ahead and get our crossbars in right before we throw this up on top of our Jeep. The longer one is gonna go in the front of your Jeep, they're actually marked. This one says, right here it's, "two-door F" which means front. This one has a "two-door R" which means the rear one. Now, you're gonna make sure that when you put these in, our top is facing down right now. So we have the inside of our Jeep facing out towards us. You want the ends that curve out facing up towards the inside of the Jeep. Just gonna go ahead and slide this in the channel here on the end and just take our time that way we don't cause any damage to our new top or to our crossbar. Now, that that one is in, we're gonna slide this down a little bit and get the rear one in. And it's the same as the front one, just carefully slide it in not to cause any damage to your top or your crossbar. Now, we're ready to go ahead and get this on our Jeep. Now, when installing a soft top, I personally like to go ahead and lay it backwards across the hood. This way I can reach over, pull my header panel up, lock it into place, and then flip everything over back towards the rear of the Jeep. Now, this is the way I like to do it and you might find it just as easy this way. Now, let's go ahead and I'll show you how it's done. Now, you're gonna wanna go ahead and take this brackets off the bottom of your header panel before installing it because these will help you lock it down into place. Now, we're just gonna go ahead, flip this over and lock this forked area here, these three prongs are gonna go down and around our factory hooks on our windshield frame. Now, once those are in we're gonna come down here underneath and I'm gonna show you how to lock them down. And just repeat this for the other one. Now, we're gonna go ahead and get our top flipped back over our Jeep and I'm gonna show you how to secure it down. Now, when flipping your top back you're gonna make sure that your front crossbar is tucked inside of your window channels. When we get to the rear ones they're gonna lay overtop of our roll bar. Now, before you roll your top all the way back, we're gonna go ahead and take the safety straps here and we're gonna roll them over the top of our sound bar and hook them into this hole here. Now, this hole here is provided for you when you have a hard top on your Jeep. This is where our lock pins go. So, we're gonna just take these down and hook them just like that, and you're gonna wanna repeat this on both sides. Now, this hook is just gonna go just inside the little metal hole in your crossbar. All right. Now, let's finish folding our top all the way back on our Jeep. I'm gonna stay right here where I'm seated. I'm gonna reach up and just flip this crossbar over. Now, as you can see our crossbar will sit right here on top of our roll bar. You grab the rest of this and flip it down. Now, before we strap everything down nice and tightly, what we're gonna do is take our side window channels here and just lock our top down underneath of them and we're gonna repeat that on both sides. After that, we can go ahead and start locking down our safety straps and get this pulled nice and tight. After that, we can throw on our rear window and our side windows. Okay. First, what we're gonna do is we're gonna take this here, this is called our seat belt strap. What it's gonna do is go around the back of our roll bar under our seat belt stud, back up to the front and we're gonna go ahead and weave this into our latch back down through. Now, we can pull this nice and tight. You don't wanna overtighten it just yet until you get the other side done. Then, we'll pull them down both nice and snug and this will pull our top nice and taut. After that, we'll show you how to get these other straps installed because they go install through the windows. All right. Our next step, we're gonna go ahead and just peel this back to gain access to the rest of our top. Now, with this peeled back, we can go ahead and get our rear window installed and our side windows installed. And go ahead and pull our zipper all the way back because it slid forward on us. Next, we're just gonna go ahead clip in the front half of our side window here and zipper it about half to three-quarters of the way. And we're gonna repeat this for both sides. Now, we're gonna go ahead and lock our front channel here into the back of our door frame, same way we did with the top. Just gonna flip these over and lock them in place and just do that on both sides. All right. Now, next we're ready to go ahead and get our rear window installed. Now, this is a slightly more complicated, but not by much. Now, let's go ahead and grab our rear window and we'll get it up in place. Now, on the back of this we have a little bit of Velcro. We're gonna go ahead and lay that up here along the back of our top channel. But we're only gonna lay that there temporarily because it's really not centered up just yet. We're gonna go ahead and get these straps installed and then we'll get it nice and centered where it needs to be. While we're up here, we're gonna go ahead and take our straps that come off our windows and just lock them into these buckles here. Now, these ones, the ones you're gonna use for your windows, are on a slight angle. This is how you could tell the two different ones apart from each other. Next, we're gonna go ahead and get our tailgate bar in. Then, we're gonna go ahead and hook up our zippers and slowly start to zipper them in place. Then, we'll go ahead and get all our Velcro and straps inserted. Just slide your rear window channel over here. Underneath your rear window is a small flap and it has a plastic tube in it, that's what you're gonna slide into your rear window channel. Just carefully slide it down. You don't wanna rip your new top. Next, go ahead lock it down into place. That looks really good. Now, let's go ahead and get our zippers started here. After your windows are zippered, go ahead and just push down the Velcro to keep that secured. Now, we can go ahead and pull our side panels tight. Our next step is we're gonna go ahead and tuck our side windows underneath our window channel in our body. Now, we're gonna start this at the front by the doors and work our way to the back. Okay. Now, that our window channels are in and secure, we're gonna go ahead and flip our top back over and slide our last two safety straps down through the holes that are still left in here and I'm gonna show you where to hook those on the inside and strap them down nice and tight. Slide these right down in here. Now, what you're gonna wanna do is go ahead and take the straps that we slid down overtop just a second ago and then lock these down underneath the window channel on the inside. Once they're locked down, just go ahead and pull the strap, make them nice and tight and Velcro them back to each other and just repeat that for both sides. All right. Now, that concludes the installation of our Smittybilt Bowless Soft Top. Now, once it sits out in the sun for a little bit, the rear window will level back out. This is not gonna be a problem. It just has to get little bit of heat into it to get the wrinkles out and soften up a little bit. Now, for more parts and videos like these, make sure you visit us at
