Review & Install Video
This Rugged Ridge bowless top is for those of you that have a two-door, 2007 and up, JK that are looking for a fastback style soft top. Now, generally, when you get a fastback style top, you are going to lose out on a little bit of that factory functionality. The whole reason that the factory top is squared off in the back is because of the frame mechanism and that's what allows you to have the Sunrider feature and also have the top fold completely down into the trunk once you remove those windows. This is not going to have either of those functions, no Sunrider and you cannot completely fold this into the trunk space. However, what this is going to do, is very easily convert into a bikini top for you. You can very easily remove the two side windows. You cannot remove the back window, it's sewn in, but you can roll it up, and then you very easily have a bikini top. So, if you don't find yourself folding your whole top back, using that freedom-top function, but you do want something that very easily converts into a bikini top, then this is going to be a pretty good option for you. This is a top that is going to install very easily, especially because there is no additional frame that you need. You're actually going to be removing your factory soft top frame if you already have one. So, very easy, "one out of three wrench" installation. Probably won't take you too much more than an hour to get this installed.
Now, there are some fastback soft tops out there that retain that factory freedom top functionality. You can still flip that section of the soft top back. Those are going to be your Bestop Trektop NXes. This one is not going to have that. However, this is also going to be a lot less expensive than that Bestop Trektop NX. The NX includes all of the hardware that you need, so even if you're coming from a hard top, you'll have everything you need. This here does not include all the hardware you're going to need, you're actually going to be reusing a lot of your factory soft top hardware, as well as needing to purchase an additional header piece. So, there are some additional things that you're going to need to get to make this top work. And that's part of the reason that this is less expensive than some of the others. I think it's still a very high-quality top and I do like the functionality of it, however, you do have to purchase those additional parts if you don't currently have them.
So, for construction, this is going to be a Black Diamond material, very similar to a factory soft top style material. This is going to come with your canvas materials, of course, all three windows. The back window is sewn in place. You cannot remove it, you can only roll it up. The side windows are removable. They come in this kit as well. And, this kit does not come with any frame because, of course, it doesn't need one. This is going to ride right along the sport cage on the back of your Jeep and follow that angle. However, like I said, you are going to need some parts to get this installed. You're going to need a windshield header, you're going to need a tailgate bar, you're going to need the clips that hold the tailgate bar in place and a few other pieces. So, if you're not currently coming from a soft top, if you currently have a hard top on your Jeep, and you want to go to this top, make sure you purchase all of those additional pieces in order to get this installed exactly how you want it.
Now, this is also going to look a little bit different than some of the other fastback tops out there. Most of the other fastback tops will look very much like a factory top with just a slanted back to it. This actually gives you a little bit more of that rugged, off-road, safari styling, because it has a visual strap on the back corner of the top. It goes from the top, down to the tub and that's going to be on the outside, that is going to be visible. Now, some people don't like that. Other people think that it does give it that additional style, that safari look, a little bit more of an off-road styling. So, if you do like that style, this is gonna be a good top for you. If you don't like that style, again, there are other tops out there. Most of them are going to be a little bit more expensive, but you do have some other options.
So, this is a "one out of three wrench" installation, probably right around an hour's time that it will take to get this installed. The first step is removing your current top, whether it be a hard top or a soft top, get it completely out of the way. Then, you're going to take the windshield header that you purchased separately, attach it onto this top, and then attach the header to the top of the windshield. From there, you can work your way from the front to the back, looping all of the straps in place to get the top nice and tight, and then, finally, install the rear side windows to finish up with the installation.
This top is right around $460, and I do think that's gonna be a pretty good deal for what you're getting. If you're somebody who already has a soft top, because then you don't have to purchase all of those additional pieces. If you are coming from a hard top, you don't have all of those soft top pieces, maybe you want to look into one of the more complete fastback tops that has all of those additional pieces right in the box with you. It's certainly going to be easier than piecing all those parts together outside of the kit, and it's also going to save you a little bit of money. So, if you're looking for a bowless soft top, this is going to be a really great option for you from Rugged Ridge, and you can find it right here at extremeterrain.com.
