Is there any known or foreseeable issue with this in conjunction with the sun rider top for hard tops? Seems like it should work but you folks may see something I don't. Thanks

    • Hello, you should be able to use this in conjunction with the hard top. It might create some fitment issues when trying to latch down the middle latches as this covers them. But there has not been many known issues with them not being compatible.

Can an overhead DVD player be mounted to this?

    • Hello! You should be able to mount an overhead DVD player to this console. It may take a little bit of work and creativity, but I do not see why you wouldn't be able to do that!

Does this product work with an SPOD installed above the rearview mirror?

    • The Smittybilt GEAR Overhead Console will sit very close to most SPOD setups. We do not carry SPOD so we have been unable to test these to confirm 100% if these work together or not.

      Overall a Solid Storage Option

I installed this item on my 2012 Jeep yesterday. I read the installation instructions about 5 times before I began so that I'd have the process in my head thereby increasing my ability to install this in a short amount of time. It still took me over an hour. I believe it can be done in less. Overall I love it as I do the seat covers and tailgate cover I purchased (also by Smittybilt). I'm fairly meticulous so here are some of my issues (all of which are minor). The instructions are easy to follow. The wording they use changes slightly from the initial parts list on page 1 to the way they describe the parts in the subsequent pages (front adaptor bracket vs. windshield adaptor bracket, overhead main frame vs. main plate, and sport bar clamp rings vs. hose clamps). This is probably irrelevant for most people, but possibly confusing for someone not handy with do-it-yourself projects. Removing the trim and center footman loop from above the windshield was easy. The trim snapped out of place and bent with ease. The loop took another 30 seconds. Next, loosely attaching the front windshield adaptor bracket was also a breeze. After this there was some minor confusion and fitting issues. The first involved the main overhead metal plate that runs between the sport bar and windshield is attached by way of one nut and bold on the front and two metal hose clamps on the rear. The photo shows one center hole drilled for the bolt to slide through and connect to the windshield bracket, but my metal plate had 2 holes, one centered and one off-center. I figured maybe it was to give you an option to have it either centered or a bit further from the driver depending on personal preference but, after having trouble with the hose clamps around the sport bar, I was left with only one option to use the center hole. I'm now guessing the other hole benefits a different model jeep than mine. The other issue was with installing the hose clamps. In order to wrap them around the sport bar I they have to be slid between the plastic housing of the sound bar and the painted (black in my case) sport bar. I couldn't get the clamps to slide around the sport bar precisely as shown. I think because the grooves that I was able to slide the metal hose clamps through were a bit further apart than the distance between where each of them clamp around the bracket. I had to work with it for a while and when I finally got them in place, they were a bit askew. This didn't affect the functionality at all and you can't see it unless you are standing on your seats looking down at the sport bar. I also hate scratching paint even if it is in an area you'll never see. Tightening the hose clamps did scrape the paint around the sport bar a bit (very minor). Once I tightened the clamps, bolt and bracket, putting on the cover and attaching the pouches was very easy. It feels extremely secure and doesn't obstruct the view or usage of the rear view mirror. One unknown is that I do not know for sure if the product effects the functionality of the hard top. I removed my hard top and am currently using a soft top (which secured just fine after the installation. Overall this is a great looking and functioning product.

If you want to use this with your "Freedom" Hard Top you can. It's not just for soft tops as many would believe. Do a couple of things :1) Make sure when you put the main bracket in situate it to where it is sitting like an upside down "U". This gives more space above the bracket. 2) After everything is installed and in place before you try to put on the driver's side Hard Top section you must remove the swing in clamp, just remove the screw and the swing clamp. "Voila" fits under a hard top. If you get any leakage at all in that spot all you have to do is drill a hole in the bracket that lines up with the VACATED swing clamp threaded hole get a bolt with a fender washer and thread it into the hole where the swing clamp was. ( Obviously do not drill through the frame cover move it out of the way first ). Once your hole bolt is in put the frame cover back in place. Also because I will leave this in place whether my hard top or soft top is installed I got rid of the two hose clamps and used two small but effective self tapping metal screws through the frame bracket and right into the Jeep's metal sport bar ( use screws that are just long enough to go through the bracket and the sport bar, a pre drilled hole is helpful. Trying to get the hose clamps under and around that sport bar was going to be time consuming and to me the hose clamps were a poor choice of fastener. I really like this overhead console because I was able to mount my CG to it with Velcro straps that I got at Lowes that fit right into the bracket cover's Molle loops. The hardest thing about the install was getting the Hard tops out of the way then back on after I had installed it. Jeep on!!!!!

      Good system, adequate pouches

The system goes in like a breeze, and the instructions are very easy to follow. I felt that the hose clamps could have been a few inches smaller to avoid so much tail and I had to tighten them all the way to the max to ensure they were snug. Really, a better system than hose clamps would be nice. No matter how careful I was the plastic and paint still ended up a bit scratched and scuffed, but none of it is visible or bare metal. The MOLLE pouches are decent: eyeglasses holder, a map case pouch (this one was my favorite), an oversized (depicted in the back on the picture), two medium multi purpose, and a odd long pouch that looks like its for a nightstick. Preference probably has a lot to do with these, but I found that the nightstick and the two medium pouches were a bit overwhelming with straps and "cool guy" features. Who keeps a nightstick on their overhead??? The point is, a cheaper model with less or no pouches would be nice, but I'm not opposed to a bit extra and then selling the pouches off at a military surplus.

Obstruction of view, but good storage

This is an excellent choice for the people with a lot of stuff to store and no where to put it. On the down side though, the bags often sag a little to far and block about 50 of rear view mirror. Im sure you can probably re arrange bags to fix problem or some other solution

      Over head counsel

It pushes on roof so it won't seal good. Also the front middle clamp has to be pulled off to put the item in so the roof won't seal tight.

      Pros and cons

it's a grate addition to my jeep and it adds a lot of over head storage, but there are some things that you need to think about before you perches this. First off for me it limits the amount of head room and sometimes the straps can hang down to low and block your mirror. On the flip it DOES work with the jeep fredom tops (with a little modification) all I had to do was remove the front centre hold down clip and the tops fit in no problem.

      I love it.

I love this thing. I would just suggest getting some self taps to secure the back to the sound bar. The hose clamps they give you squeak from time to time but besides that it is the best!

      Long overdue

Awesome product but I only had two issues the almost 6 month wait for it to arrive and some minor issues with some of the Molle pouches not fitting properly other than that all is great and yes I would recommend it to anyone with those exceptions

      Great Console Difficult Fit

I will start by saying I absolutely love this item; the look, the style and the multiple function. You can hang anything from it; I installed my CB with plenty of clearance to utilize the rearview mirror. Now, let me try to explain this and make some sense on the fit issue. Installing takes some brain work, as the instructions are so so. But after some brain power it works out. You have to remove the metal center rung (dead center of the windshield) that holds down the two front roof sections. In doing this, the center roof tightening device on the panels (sorry lack of vocabulary) does not create a tight fit in the center. This cause’s air and water leakage. My answer to this is 90% of the time I don’t have the roof or doors on, when I do I run a small towel between the seal and roof top. I personally don’t mind, it’s a JEEP, not a Toyota FJ right. But if you keep the roof on, you will have issues with this. With that exception, I love having the storage and a “military combat” look and I recommend this item.

      Best Storage Product Out There

I am beyond pleased with this product and the extra storage it gave me for the back of my JKUR. I was hesitant to drill into my tailgate, but honestly once I did it and it was installed it looks like it came that way out of the factory! I highly recommend this product for anyone needing extra storge!

      Cool addition

Looks good, adds functional storage, and aesthetics. Easy to install, however wasn't clear on whether or not it would conflict with the freedom top fitment. It will fit if you remove the front latch.

Just the storage I was looking for!

This storage console looks great! It does slightly impede the sight line of the rear view mirror, but with planning it can be minimized by proper placement of the different pouches.

Great product for extra storage, however it does interfere with the forward latch of the freedom top. I had to remove it. I took the Jeep through the car wash and no leaks! the weather stripping is new though.
