Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This is for those of you who are looking to add a step to help you get in or out of your stock or lifted height Wrangler, and also want to add a little bit of protection. Now, the way these mount to the Jeep mean they're not going to be quite as strong as more expensive armor, but to add some light protection and a step, these are really well built and pretty inexpensive. This side armor is made out of steel tubing that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish that's going to do a really good job of resisting both rust and corrosion. The armor will give you protection from both the side and from the bottom, but as I mentioned, because of the way these mount, they're not going to be quite as strong as other armor that is often more expensive. These are designed to mount by drilling holes in the frame and installing using self-tapping screws. Now, even though the way these mount to the Jeep is a bit of a weak point if we're talking about protection, these are still really well built and they're heavy. So when you go to install them, it'll definitely help to have an extra set of hands around or at least some tall jack stands to hold up the weight. The installation process is pretty straightforward. You're going to hold the armor up to the side of the Jeep so you can mark where you're going to drill the holes in your frame. You'll want to start with a small drill bit and work your way up to the full size. Don't drill too large because, again, these mount with self-tapping screws, so the holes do have to be properly sized for installation. Once you have the holes drilled, you'll install all of the bolts into your new holes, and you're done. The whole process shouldn't take you more than two hours and you won't need any specialty tools, but a good sharp set of drill bits and a powerful drill will definitely speed up the process. I think you do get a good bit of value for what you pay for this armor. Like we've said a couple of times, these aren't going to be as stout as armor that mounts in other ways onto the Jeep, however, these will give you some light protection and they'll work as a step, all for what I think is a pretty fair price. So if you're looking for some protection from both the side and the bottom on your Jeep, and you're also looking for a nice usable step, all in a budget, this is a really nice option. It's not going to be quite as strong as some armor that's more expensive or mounts in other ways, but for what it's designed to do, it'll definitely get the job done. So that's my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Construction. This RedRock 4x4 side armor is made out of thick, tough steel and finished with black powder coat that is textured to provide grip when you use the armor as a step. The armor shields against rocks, wood, and even stones and gravel kicked up from the trail. It is designed for sturdiness and gives a finished, decisive look.

Protection. This side armor defends your Jeep's underside from gouging impacts by rocks, stumps, and so on while also guarding the vehicle's sides from obstacles and kicked up debris. They double as sturdy steps.

Accessories. This kit comes with the self-tapping bolts required for installation.

Application. Marking and drilling holes is necessary to mount these side armor pieces on your 1987 - 2006 TJ or YJ Wrangler. Includes self-tappng bolts. See the installation guide for details.

Can these rock sliders be utilized as a side recovery point in case the jeep is rolled over?

Lmfalen

  • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor can is installed directly to the Wrangler's frame, allowing it to be a very sturdy piece. We have not used this for recovery before, and if you intend to, we would recommend upgrading the included hardware to either metric grade 10.9 bolts and nuts, or standard grade 8 bolts and nuts to ensure the strongest mounting possible.

I have a 2004 Wrangler LJ (TJ Unlimited). I cannot find any LJ side armor. Is the LJ the same distance between the front and rear fender as the TJ? Thank you for your help!

  • Hello, on the RedRock 4x4 Side Armor - Textured Black (87-06 Wrangler YJ & TJ) you would need a 5/16” drill bit to drill the holes for the bolts.

    Great Addition!

This was my first addition to my 2005 Wrangler, and I do not regret it at all. As long as you have to tools to drill the holes, the parts in the package will do the rest. Something that I used to help my with marking holes and assembling were to let them rest on jack stands, while I lined them up where I felt they needed to be. It was a little weird though that the company mislabeled the driver and passenger side guards, and had the wrong instructions, but as long as you're intuitive, it should be pretty obvious. The mounts seem pretty stable as a step. Will know more when I get lifted. They have also saved me from slamming a rock on the trail. I do highly recommend them.

    These Rockers Rock

I have my own fabrication shop in Salem Oregon. I was planning on building my own rocker guards and installing them on my 95 Wrangler. I was on one of the Jeep Forums and saw the Extreme Terrain add. I clicked on it and saw these rocker guards from Red Rock 4x4. I couldn't build my own and paint them for their advertised price... These things are perfect! They mounted in less than an hour and fit like a glove! They made my 95 jeep look better and they help my wife get in after my lift... Customer Service was the best and smoking fast shipping. I highly recommend the Red Rock 4x4 guards and Extreme Terrain Todd Gardner Salem Oregon

    Armor and a step!

I have purchased these mainly for armor but have also used them as a step which works great. Very easy to install and the item comes with the self tapping bolts you will need. Much lighter of a product than i expected but still strong enough to protect your rockers.A nice textured powder coat that provides some grip when using as a step. I have and will recommend this product again!

This product looks great and is solid.

You will need to mark and drill holes into frame. Some what difficult to hold running boards to frame to mark holes. Not a lot a places to c clamp to frame real well. Once I got them on an drawn them up tight. They were closer to bottom of jeep then I intended. The step in is still high. If your looking for a easier step into your jeep. This is a little better then none. But I love the look of them and the off road look they have. They offer the protection underneath as well for off road.

These not only look nice but they add alot of side protection. Although I haven't had the experience yet of sliding along terrain I feel confident that they will do great once that situation comes along.

    Nice quality

I chose to weld the product to the frame instead of bolt them into place as per manufacturer instructions. I didn't feel like drilling into the frame was as good in terms of rust or the long term purpose of keeping them in place. The quality of the product was good. They seam very sturdy and the coating matches that of the smitty built course textured bumpers already on the jeep. I do wish the manufacturer would give options for body lifted jeeps to keep the steps close to the body. Because I welded them in place, it wasn't a problem as I used the bottom and sides of the mounting plate to weld to but the top part of the plate is not on the frame as I wanted to keep the step closer to the body than the plate would allow. Overall, I'm very happy with the product. They look great!

Self tapping screw hardware is cheap

First of all the direction are backwards it says " position the rear, angled, plate against the rear of the frame, etc" if I do that, the guards don't fit at all. If I put the angle plate toward the front they fit like a glove. Second I drilled the 5/16" hole like the instructions said and instead of the bolt cutting threads the bolt striped and can't be either removed or screwed in. It appears my frame steel is harder than the bolts. What a mess. Now I will have to get new bolts and a tap to install these correctly.

Great Poduct! Very Satisfied!! Highly Recommend!

I purchased the RedRock Side Armor for my TJ after installing another manufacturer's product and not being pleased with it. I was hesitant to drill into my frame, so I had purchased a set of guards that mounted to the body/frame mounting points. That mounting location and method drastically decreased the dampening provided by the frame mount bushings, enough that I could feel more vibration and see it in my side mirrors. They also came in contact with the body unless they were installed with a minimum amount of torque. I was not satisfied and removed them. Enter RedRock Side Armor... and my smiles! I decided that I was fine with drilling into the frame as this would obviously be the most secure method of installation for side armor (short of welding), and would not be detrimental to my smooth, non-vibrating, ride. I chose this product because it appeared to be well manufactured and has a nice warranty. I wanted something to double as a step for my 7 year old son to climb in and out as well. This product suited all my needs perfectly. Installation was straight forward, required minimal tools, and only took me three hours with no one helping at all. The finish is excellent. They have a kind of crinkle look to them that is a nice accent to the vehicle and provides a good grip when utilizing as a step. They are very solid and sturdy when installed. I am very satisfied with this product and would highly recommend it. And, most importantly, they got big thumbs-up from my son! Shipping was fast and I am also very pleased with Extreme Terrain.

Wheel made but bolts strip easily

The side armor is well made and looks great, but installation was not as smooth as some lead you to believe. Four of the bolts stripped easily rendering them useless and necessitated trying to find a suitable replacement option (not easily found way down in the Florida Keys). I would give the product a better rating but the frustration factor was high.

    Wrong directions

I gave it 4 stars because the product was what I expected and it mounted fairly easy. But you would think the mfg. would at least know how their product mounts!!! The instructions were complete backwards. Step 2 showed the angles bracket needs to be mounted in the rear and the straight bracket goes to the front. Wrong, it's the other way around, pretty poor they can't get the instructions correct.
