    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This is for those of you who are looking to add a step to help you get in or out of your stock or lifted height Wrangler, and also want to add a little bit of protection. Now, the way these mount to the Jeep mean they're not going to be quite as strong as more expensive armor, but to add some light protection and a step, these are really well built and pretty inexpensive. This side armor is made out of steel tubing that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish that's going to do a really good job of resisting both rust and corrosion. The armor will give you protection from both the side and from the bottom, but as I mentioned, because of the way these mount, they're not going to be quite as strong as other armor that is often more expensive. These are designed to mount by drilling holes in the frame and installing using self-tapping screws. Now, even though the way these mount to the Jeep is a bit of a weak point if we're talking about protection, these are still really well built and they're heavy. So when you go to install them, it'll definitely help to have an extra set of hands around or at least some tall jack stands to hold up the weight. The installation process is pretty straightforward. You're going to hold the armor up to the side of the Jeep so you can mark where you're going to drill the holes in your frame. You'll want to start with a small drill bit and work your way up to the full size. Don't drill too large because, again, these mount with self-tapping screws, so the holes do have to be properly sized for installation. Once you have the holes drilled, you'll install all of the bolts into your new holes, and you're done. The whole process shouldn't take you more than two hours and you won't need any specialty tools, but a good sharp set of drill bits and a powerful drill will definitely speed up the process. I think you do get a good bit of value for what you pay for this armor. Like we've said a couple of times, these aren't going to be as stout as armor that mounts in other ways onto the Jeep, however, these will give you some light protection and they'll work as a step, all for what I think is a pretty fair price. So if you're looking for some protection from both the side and the bottom on your Jeep, and you're also looking for a nice usable step, all in a budget, this is a really nice option. It's not going to be quite as strong as some armor that's more expensive or mounts in other ways, but for what it's designed to do, it'll definitely get the job done. So that's my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Construction. This RedRock 4x4 side armor is made out of thick, tough steel and finished with black powder coat that is textured to provide grip when you use the armor as a step. The armor shields against rocks, wood, and even stones and gravel kicked up from the trail. It is designed for sturdiness and gives a finished, decisive look.

Protection. This side armor defends your Jeep's underside from gouging impacts by rocks, stumps, and so on while also guarding the vehicle's sides from obstacles and kicked up debris. They double as sturdy steps.

Accessories. This kit comes with the self-tapping bolts required for installation.

Application. Marking and drilling holes is necessary to mount these side armor pieces on your 1987 - 2006 TJ or YJ Wrangler. Includes self-tappng bolts. See the installation guide for details.

    5 Top Rated Questions

Why do these come and install with self tapping bolts instead of grade 8 bolts and nuts?

    • The reason for the self-tapping bolts is the installation of this side armor will require drilling into the frame of the TJ.

can these be welded on instead of bolted on?

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor are intended to be bolted on to the frame. They could be modified and welded on to the frame, should you want to go that way.

Can these rock sliders be utilized as a side recovery point in case the jeep is rolled over?

    • The RedRock 4x4 Side Armor can is installed directly to the Wrangler's frame, allowing it to be a very sturdy piece. We have not used this for recovery before, and if you intend to, we would recommend upgrading the included hardware to either metric grade 10.9 bolts and nuts, or standard grade 8 bolts and nuts to ensure the strongest mounting possible.

I have a 2004 Wrangler LJ (TJ Unlimited). I cannot find any LJ side armor. Is the LJ the same distance between the front and rear fender as the TJ? Thank you for your help!

      Good but could be great

The bars look great, but instead of coming with metric bolts they should have UD Standard that fit your drill bit size.

      Love these bars!

Would have given them a 5-star but the self-tapping bolts that came with it didn't self-tap!

      Look Awesome

Nice clean, rugged look. Install not bad, just have to take your time (two of us were finished in about 2 hours). As suggested by others, highly recommend using a tap after you drill the holes, which increases your install time a bit, but made the included self tapping bolts go in like butter. (Extreme Terrain, please take a minute and correct your install directions...)

      Good steps, bad bolts

Steps went on nicely and easily, easiest w 2 people but jack stands work too. Look great and feels plenty strong for an occasional rock. Only reason I took off a star is bc the bolts suck. Didn’t have enough of them originally although extreme terrain was very good about sending new ones. The bolts I did have were cheap quality and stripped pretty easily. Besides the cheap bolts, everything else is great. Rock sliders are nice, quick shipping, great customer service

      Tough Little Guys

These bad boys are what you need for your Jeep. They bout to the frame so they’re as strong as could be. They don’t only protect your Jeep, they also are useful as a step. Also they’re just aesthetically pleasing.

If you have a jack they are easy to put on by your self. I would suggest getting better self tapping bolts first, some of the ones that were provided were junk

      great for price

great product for the price. It was not the hardest to install but it does help to have two people. It didn't come with the bolts when i got it. I called customer service and they shipped them to me a few days later. They work pretty good and look pretty cool as well.
