      Review & Installation Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This is for those of you who are looking to add a step to help you get in or out of your stock or lifted height Wrangler, and also want to add a little bit of protection. Now, the way these mount to the Jeep mean they're not going to be quite as strong as more expensive armor, but to add some light protection and a step, these are really well built and pretty inexpensive. This side armor is made out of steel tubing that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish that's going to do a really good job of resisting both rust and corrosion. The armor will give you protection from both the side and from the bottom, but as I mentioned, because of the way these mount, they're not going to be quite as strong as other armor that is often more expensive. These are designed to mount by drilling holes in the frame and installing using self-tapping screws. Now, even though the way these mount to the Jeep is a bit of a weak point if we're talking about protection, these are still really well built and they're heavy. So when you go to install them, it'll definitely help to have an extra set of hands around or at least some tall jack stands to hold up the weight. The installation process is pretty straightforward. You're going to hold the armor up to the side of the Jeep so you can mark where you're going to drill the holes in your frame. You'll want to start with a small drill bit and work your way up to the full size. Don't drill too large because, again, these mount with self-tapping screws, so the holes do have to be properly sized for installation.Once you have the holes drilled, you'll install all of the bolts into your new holes, and you're done. The whole process shouldn't take you more than two hours and you won't need any specialty tools, but a good sharp set of drill bits and a powerful drill will definitely speed up the process.I think you do get a good bit of value for what you pay for this armor. Like we've said a couple of times, these aren't going to be as stout as armor that mounts in other ways onto the Jeep, however, these will give you some light protection and they'll work as a step, all for what I think is a pretty fair price. So if you're looking for some protection from both the side and the bottom on your Jeep, and you're also looking for a nice usable step, all in a budget, this is a really nice option. It's not going to be quite as strong as some armor that's more expensive or mounts in other ways, but for what it's designed to do, it'll definitely get the job done.So that's my review of the RedRock 4X4 Side Armor, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

        Good quality side steps

They feel like they are built to last. Additionally they have drain holes built in which are nice. Haven't actually put them on the Jeep it only comes with bolts to mount directly to the frame. So when I bought my jeep it had rusted old side steps which I took off leaving rust spots on the frame. So I want to attach them with a wrap around clamp.

        Solid rails w/ great finish

Rails are solid as you would expect. Finish is very tough and looks great. Provided self-tapping screws were a disappointment as they were not the kind of quality needed to effectively self-tap into thick Jeep frame (about half of them failed). Needed to drill and tap w/ other tools to complete installation. End result of installed product was as desired.

        Great armor, great value

Nice bars. Easy install with the exception of the provided bolts. Provided bolts totally suck. They don’t work at all. Ended up tapping all holes and used grade 8 bolts from the hardware store.

        Hefty and well built

I took the advice of a previous poster and tapped the holes for teh 3/8 inch bolts it worked really well. Looks great and very sturdy when installed. Placed them on a jack stand, measured from body to step and marked hole locations.

        Great sliders

These sliders are a great product. I have had them on the jeep for almost 3 years now and they have held up great. I've had the entire weight of the jeep come down on rocks on these and jammed them into rocks using them as turning points. They have withstood all the abuse I have put them through.

        Great Steps

I installed these last night in a few hours. I decided to bypass muscling the self tapping bolts in. Instead I went to the local auto parts store and bought a drill bit/tap set for $10. A size "Q" bit and a 10x1.5 tap. It worked beautifully, I didnt have to cuss or break any bolts. As a rock slider it will probably add some protection with it just being bolted to the side of the frame but as a step it is excellent. I installed mine as high as I could as close to the body as possible for maximum clearance.

        Good but could be great

The bars look great, but instead of coming with metric bolts they should have UD Standard that fit your drill bit size.

        Love these bars!

Would have given them a 5-star but the self-tapping bolts that came with it didn't self-tap!

        Look Awesome

Nice clean, rugged look. Install not bad, just have to take your time (two of us were finished in about 2 hours). As suggested by others, highly recommend using a tap after you drill the holes, which increases your install time a bit, but made the included self tapping bolts go in like butter. (Extreme Terrain, please take a minute and correct your install directions...)

I already have the 3in round step bars but I would like to put these rock sliders on instead would they bolt in where the step bars are?

      • If your step bars install to your frame directly, then yes. If your step bars install to the pinch welds, then no.

Why do these come and install with self tapping bolts instead of grade 8 bolts and nuts?

      • The reason for the self-tapping bolts is the installation of this side armor will require drilling into the frame of the TJ.
