Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers. This kit is available in both the rectangular mirrors that you see here and round mirrors, and it's also available in two different finishes, either gloss black or textured. You can also purchase these mirrors individually or as a pair. This mirror kit is for those of you who want to take the doors off of your Jeep but also want to remain both legal and safe by retaining your rear-view mirrors. Now, there are kits out there that will permanently move your factory mirrors from your doors to your A pillars and I really like those kits because they save you the additional step every time you take the doors off of installing or removing your quick release mirror. However, if you're somebody who has a newer JK that has either the power mirrors or heated mirrors, you'll lose that functionality by moving the mirror to the A pillar, so if you're somebody in that situation, I definitely recommend these. I especially like these mirrors over some of the other quick release mirror kits on the market because these are really solidly built. Some of the issues that you can have with a mirror like this, especially at highway speed, is a vibration that makes it really hard to see behind you. These mirrors are nice and solid, so that won't be an issue for you. On the back of each of these mirrors is a ball joint that is fully adjustable, so you can tighten it down, and that's going to keep the mirrors from moving when you hit highway speed. The way that the arm is designed and the way it attaches to the quick release bracket means it's going to attach really tightly and, again, it's not going to vibrate, especially at highway speed. Because the arms and the mirrors themselves are fully adjustable, you're going to be able to see the mirror in any situation. One of the drawbacks to moving the factory mirror to the A pillar is it can make the passenger mirror a little bit difficult to see. You won't have that issue with this kit. This kit is designed to be completely bolt-on and installs really easily. In fact, it uses a lot of the factory hardware which makes it even easier. The first step in the installation is to install the bracket that will stay on the Jeep. In order to do that, you have to remove two bolts from the factory windshield hinge. Now, we found that ours had some Locktite on them, so it might be helpful to run a die and tap through the bolt and bolt hole to make sure they're nice and clean before you reinstall those bolts. That will decrease the likelihood of you cross-threading one of those bolts. Once you have the bracket installed on the Jeep, you install the mirror onto the mirror arm, and then put the mirror arm in the quick release bracket. The whole installation shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes and the only tool you'll need is a socket to attach the mirror to the mirror arm and a Torx bit to remove those factory bolts. I think this kit is worth every dollar that you have to pay for it because of how solidly it's built. You can get two of these mirrors for right around $50 and in my opinion they're worth that. I would much rather have a mirror mover kit that permanently moves my factory mirror from my door to my A pillar, again, just so you don't have that extra step every time you take your doors on and off. However, I'm a TJ guy, so I don't have to worry about power mirrors. If I had a JK that had power mirrors that were heated, I definitely wouldn't want to lose that functionality and I would be installing a set of these on my Jeep. So if you're somebody who likes to take the doors off your Jeep for that open air driving experience, but you want to remain legal and safe, and you don't mind the extra step of taking the mirrors on and off every time you take the doors on and off, I think this is a well-built and fairly priced kit. So, that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

When he talks (in the video) about a die and tap -- have you found that necessary? I wanted to check on that before ordering. I have a 2017 Sahara FYI.

  • The Rugged Ridge Quick Release Black Round Mirror install should not need to require use of a tap and die set to install these mirrors.

Will this allow me to keep using my light bar and pillar mounts?

Raymond

  • Rugged Ridge Quick Release Black Round Mirror uses windshield hinge mount locations and depending on your bar/brackets, the mirror may not work with it. If it aligns properly and flush you may need to source longer hardware to properly install the quick release mirrors.

Does it move a lot when experiencing high wind resistance?

  • Hello! When these are tightened down correctly and fully secured they actually barely move even at highway speeds! Although there will obviously a little bit of movement it is minor.

Can I use this in conjunction with the Rugged Ridge A Pillar Dual Light Mount which uses the same mounting location?

  • Hello, it will all depend if the mounting bolts are long enough to be able to accommodate both accessories there, for that reason we wouldn't be able to guarantee fitment.

    I Highly Recommend This Product.

I purchased two of these mirrors, one for my ex-wife’s white 2008 Unlimited and one for my black 2012 2-door. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick they were to install. Before choosing this product it took some time picking out a mirror option that made sense. My mirrors are powered, hers are not. I looked at relocation brackets for our existing mirrors but the time it would take to move them back and forth didn’t make sense. This mirror appeared to be the best in terms of price, time and ease of usage (I’m constantly moving doors on and off). If I had to guess, there isn’t a better product out there. When I first saw this I was thrown off by the name because it uses the words “Quick-Release Mirror Relocation Kit” when in fact it’s a ‘Quick-Release Optional Mirror Kit.’ Installation took about 7 minutes and the instructions were clear and concise. I love how fast I can now mount and un-mount the mirror with the mounting bracket installed. Aesthetically the mirror looks great and the bracket is unobtrusive when not in use. The arm between the mounting bracket and the mirror is sturdy and proportionally looks better than some of the other options out there. The mirror is small yet convex so positioning it is key. It does create slight noise from the wind resistance it creates especially at higher speeds, but that should be expected and everything makes more noise with the doors off. Like others, I purchased this in response to Virginia’s legal requirements of having a left-hand side mirror. With Tube Doors now on the way I will still be able to use this mirror rather than having to find another set of mirrors. I couldn’t be happier.

    Great product.

This product does exactly what I want it to do. It came with everything including plastic washers, replacement bolts (only needed on TJ's) and it even had foam backing to not damage your pain. One downside was someone at the factory cross threaded the bolt that holds the mirror on and messed up the thread. I was able to break out my tap and die set to fix it. Wasn't worth the pain of getting a replacement.

    Easy install

This mirror installed in no time and is perfect for when I want to remove my doors and still be street legal and safe. Prior to having this mirror I would feel unsafe while driving without my doors. I check my mirrors often so I felt the fact that the mirror wasn't there. Good option when running without doors.

The mirrors are a good option when running without doors. I do not remove these mirrors when I put the doors back on. I just loosen the knob and fold them forward out of the way of the doors. The round shape looks good on the Jeep with the round headlights. This product is not sold as a pair. Order two if you want both side view mirrors.

Great quality, fast delivery...item "as expected" from what I saw online/website. In Colorado we are required to have side mirrors, so get em! [...besides its a lot easier, I tried the "no side mirrors" driving, not good in traffic ]

    Mirrors are fine

Easy to install. In test drive, had to work on tightening down the arm. I am not sure that it is going to stay tight. It would be better if the ratchet part was all metal instead of a plastic sleeve.

    Great mirror

Great mirror to have for summertime when the doors are off most days. Quick and simple installation and functional. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because you have to really tighten down the hand nut to get them to stay put. Otherwise a great investment

    Useful but needs improvement

The mirrors are extremely useful for me as I always take my doors off and they are a cheap way to solve this problem. The only thing that annoyed me about the product was that even when fully tightened and locked in place, the mirrors rotate while I'm driving and the rotation will sometimes shift them to a lower angle where I'm staring right at the road when I look at them.

    Perfect Substitute

If you are looking for a full time replacement for your stock mirrors, these are a perfect alternative. You have the option to use the 'quick release' screw to take the mirrors off and on as your please. But removing that attachment is the way that I went for a full time replacement for the stock mirrors. I would highly recommend getting washers to help hold the bracket in place.
