Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers. This kit is available in both the rectangular mirrors that you see here and round mirrors, and it's also available in two different finishes, either gloss black or textured. You can also purchase these mirrors individually or as a pair. This mirror kit is for those of you who want to take the doors off of your Jeep but also want to remain both legal and safe by retaining your rear-view mirrors. Now, there are kits out there that will permanently move your factory mirrors from your doors to your A pillars and I really like those kits because they save you the additional step every time you take the doors off of installing or removing your quick release mirror. However, if you're somebody who has a newer JK that has either the power mirrors or heated mirrors, you'll lose that functionality by moving the mirror to the A pillar, so if you're somebody in that situation, I definitely recommend these. I especially like these mirrors over some of the other quick release mirror kits on the market because these are really solidly built. Some of the issues that you can have with a mirror like this, especially at highway speed, is a vibration that makes it really hard to see behind you. These mirrors are nice and solid, so that won't be an issue for you. On the back of each of these mirrors is a ball joint that is fully adjustable, so you can tighten it down, and that's going to keep the mirrors from moving when you hit highway speed. The way that the arm is designed and the way it attaches to the quick release bracket means it's going to attach really tightly and, again, it's not going to vibrate, especially at highway speed. Because the arms and the mirrors themselves are fully adjustable, you're going to be able to see the mirror in any situation. One of the drawbacks to moving the factory mirror to the A pillar is it can make the passenger mirror a little bit difficult to see. You won't have that issue with this kit. This kit is designed to be completely bolt-on and installs really easily. In fact, it uses a lot of the factory hardware which makes it even easier. The first step in the installation is to install the bracket that will stay on the Jeep. In order to do that, you have to remove two bolts from the factory windshield hinge. Now, we found that ours had some Locktite on them, so it might be helpful to run a die and tap through the bolt and bolt hole to make sure they're nice and clean before you reinstall those bolts. That will decrease the likelihood of you cross-threading one of those bolts. Once you have the bracket installed on the Jeep, you install the mirror onto the mirror arm, and then put the mirror arm in the quick release bracket. The whole installation shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes and the only tool you'll need is a socket to attach the mirror to the mirror arm and a Torx bit to remove those factory bolts. I think this kit is worth every dollar that you have to pay for it because of how solidly it's built. You can get two of these mirrors for right around $50 and in my opinion they're worth that. I would much rather have a mirror mover kit that permanently moves my factory mirror from my door to my A pillar, again, just so you don't have that extra step every time you take your doors on and off. However, I'm a TJ guy, so I don't have to worry about power mirrors. If I had a JK that had power mirrors that were heated, I definitely wouldn't want to lose that functionality and I would be installing a set of these on my Jeep. So if you're somebody who likes to take the doors off your Jeep for that open air driving experience, but you want to remain legal and safe, and you don't mind the extra step of taking the mirrors on and off every time you take the doors on and off, I think this is a well-built and fairly priced kit. So, that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Can the mirror bases stay on the windshield pillar when you're ready to put the doors with factory mirrors back on?

SeanC

  • Yes they can! The Rugged Ridge Quick Release Textured Black Rectangular Mirrors are designed so you only have to install the brackets once and leave them on. When putting your doors on, just unscrew the quick release knobs and store the mirrors till they're needed again.

    Good solid product

Researched and selected this product and was not disappointed. Good sturdy product. I have no problem with mirrors vibrating (too much) even at highway speed. I can easily take them on and off and they do not blow inward during travel - they do tighten and tighten well and don't slip. They do whistle like other reviewers say, but you stop noticing that easily with the radio, road, and tire noise. I recommend putting the passenger mirror on the lower two A frame bolts and the driver's mirror on the upper two. Just seemed more aligned to me when I did that. No problems with this product at all.

    Great Buy!

I bought these and they were at my house in 3 days. Very nice packaging. Right out of the box the brand name holds true. they are of a rugged construction. Very simple install. took me about 10 minutes with my drill and hex driver. Great quality and would definitely buy again. In the picture they may look alike they set a little high but i fixed that easily by moving it to the lower set of bolts on my jk. I love them. Highly Reccomend.

    Part time mirror

It was supposed to be simple enough and it was. Putting the mounts on was easy and with foam backing should never scratch the paint. The mirror holder has minor ridges in it as does the mount, but because of the sturdy design when you tighten down the hand knob you only collapse half of the mount to tighten. Never really gets tight enough to stop it from moving. I even tried filing deeper groves in the mount and the bracket, but still couldn't tighten it enough. Finally bought some button head bolts and tightened with an allen wrench. Looks good with the button head and works well. I like the looks. Just not a quick release without a wrench.

    Great mirrors

I remove the doors and top often. The mirrors I had prior to these vibrated horribly at highway speeds making it difficult to see anything behind you. These new mirrors are steady, easy to take on and off and look great. One thing we did notice on the jk, if you mount them in the top set of holes on the windshield bracket, they obstruct your view and whistle in the wind. Moving the to the bottom holes and all concerns go away. Wish I would have found these years ago..

    I like them but....

The problem was on highway at around 60 mph the passengers mirror kept blowing back against jeep ... no matter how tight I made it ... I had to drill a small hole through the bracket and use a quick release pin to keep this from happening...still happy with product easy fix ... and for the price didn't mind modification

    Not bad

The mounting brackets we easy to attach to the door frames and assembly was easy with only 4 pieces per side. They give great side views which I had lacked when the doors were off. I love I can keep the mounts in place when the doors are on. Two things that caused me to rate a 4 and not a 5 were; 1. The design causes the mirror to whistle when you get over 30 MPH. This could be because my mirror isn't attached as secure as it could be but will check it when I take them off and 2. Trying to get the mirror aligned is somewhat tricky due to the design of the mirror where it is placed on the jeep but after many tries I got it set. Overall worth the money

Review from Rugged Ridge Quick Release Textured Black Round Mirrors - Pair (97-18 Wrangler TJ & JK)

    Quality concern

Install was easy. Read all instructions before installing. One of the ball joints on one of the mirrors is jammed up with some kind of epoxy. So I cannot adjust it. Also, one of the adjustable arms won't tighten. So if you drive the speed limit, the wind just blows the whole thing inward. I seem to be having problems with this brand of products.

    You really need the mirrors.

Mirrors work great and keeps you legal. For the money you save not having to pay insurance deductible for the vehicle you hit in your blind spot, you can pay for these. The only thing I would change and look into is a torks head bolt so that you need a tool to get them off anyone can walk up and unscrew the mirrors with out any tool and the mirrors are gone we all have or should have the tool kit to remove doors and tops of our jeeps.

    Awesome Mirrors!!!

This review is going to be the same as most. These are a great product for the price. Install was a breeze! The whistling can be a bit annoying, but but no where near as annoying as being pulled over. They haven't moved once on me at highway speeds. Very happy with the purchase.

    Nice clean look, easy install

Super easy to install and they look great. Instructions were a little lackluster, but it's not difficult to fill in the vague parts. Nice large mirror surface for good visibility. The quick release works well, and is a nice feature. Brackets should be fine in place all year.

    Average at Best

Decent quality. The screws provided were extremely tight, hope it did not strip the threads in the windshield. They whistle in the wind, to be expected I guess and they dont really stay in place. The locking wing nut provided just doesn't do the job. But I am legal in all 50 states.

Review from Rugged Ridge Quick Release Textured Black Round Mirrors - Pair (97-18 Wrangler TJ & JK)

    Great Solution for going doorless

Going door-less for the summer and needed a solution for quick add or removal of doors while maintaining a legal status for daily on road use. Bracket allows for quick placement and removal of mirrors so that the mirrors can be seen from both the drivers' side or passenger side. Other brackets tend to make it more difficult to see out the passenger's side mirror because it moves the mirror forward. This places the mirror in line with the normal placement.

Really loving these so far, extremely easy to assemble and mount, inexpensive for a quality product as well. If you're looking for a more versatile mirror option that doesn't involve relocating your mirrors from the doors, I would recommend these to anyone.

    Not worth the buy

I put them on as displayed and as the instructions told. They turned out to not adjust to the right angle so I could see behind me properly with the doors off. Also they were sticking out further then the mirrors on the doors and almost had passing vehicles take them off while driving on the interstate. I'd recommend not buying these, go with ones that go directly into the door hing instead.

Review from Rugged Ridge Quick Release Textured Black Round Mirrors - Pair (97-18 Wrangler TJ & JK)

    Good mirrors

These are a little hard to get tight enough to where they stay put. My wife nor my 11 year son can tighten them enough to keep the wind at 50mph from pushing them back. They do however stay put when I hand tighten them and they have very little vibration at speed. Easy to install and they look nice simple and clean on my 2017 JKU. Well worth the money

Very easy to assemble and attach to my jeep but it would not tighten up enough to keep in place while driving, the force of air would push it in towards me. I sent it back.

More than Decent, Less than Awesome

The mirror reflects just as it should! Previous write ups mentioned whistling, and they were all correct. I purchased both the left and the right and both have their own seperate songs going on starting around 23mph. There's an awkward forward facing rubber lip which is the culprit. A little clear silicon should do the trick. At 50 mph and the mirrors shake. Other than those two issues, they do what it is I need them to do, make me a legal beagle in the 50 and cover my blind spots!
