    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers. This kit is available in both the rectangular mirrors that you see here and round mirrors, and it's also available in two different finishes, either gloss black or textured. You can also purchase these mirrors individually or as a pair. This mirror kit is for those of you who want to take the doors off of your Jeep but also want to remain both legal and safe by retaining your rear-view mirrors. Now, there are kits out there that will permanently move your factory mirrors from your doors to your A pillars and I really like those kits because they save you the additional step every time you take the doors off of installing or removing your quick release mirror. However, if you're somebody who has a newer JK that has either the power mirrors or heated mirrors, you'll lose that functionality by moving the mirror to the A pillar, so if you're somebody in that situation, I definitely recommend these. I especially like these mirrors over some of the other quick release mirror kits on the market because these are really solidly built. Some of the issues that you can have with a mirror like this, especially at highway speed, is a vibration that makes it really hard to see behind you. These mirrors are nice and solid, so that won't be an issue for you. On the back of each of these mirrors is a ball joint that is fully adjustable, so you can tighten it down, and that's going to keep the mirrors from moving when you hit highway speed. The way that the arm is designed and the way it attaches to the quick release bracket means it's going to attach really tightly and, again, it's not going to vibrate, especially at highway speed. Because the arms and the mirrors themselves are fully adjustable, you're going to be able to see the mirror in any situation. One of the drawbacks to moving the factory mirror to the A pillar is it can make the passenger mirror a little bit difficult to see. You won't have that issue with this kit. This kit is designed to be completely bolt-on and installs really easily. In fact, it uses a lot of the factory hardware which makes it even easier. The first step in the installation is to install the bracket that will stay on the Jeep. In order to do that, you have to remove two bolts from the factory windshield hinge. Now, we found that ours had some Locktite on them, so it might be helpful to run a die and tap through the bolt and bolt hole to make sure they're nice and clean before you reinstall those bolts. That will decrease the likelihood of you cross-threading one of those bolts. Once you have the bracket installed on the Jeep, you install the mirror onto the mirror arm, and then put the mirror arm in the quick release bracket. The whole installation shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes and the only tool you'll need is a socket to attach the mirror to the mirror arm and a Torx bit to remove those factory bolts. I think this kit is worth every dollar that you have to pay for it because of how solidly it's built. You can get two of these mirrors for right around $50 and in my opinion they're worth that. I would much rather have a mirror mover kit that permanently moves my factory mirror from my door to my A pillar, again, just so you don't have that extra step every time you take your doors on and off. However, I'm a TJ guy, so I don't have to worry about power mirrors. If I had a JK that had power mirrors that were heated, I definitely wouldn't want to lose that functionality and I would be installing a set of these on my Jeep. So if you're somebody who likes to take the doors off your Jeep for that open air driving experience, but you want to remain legal and safe, and you don't mind the extra step of taking the mirrors on and off every time you take the doors on and off, I think this is a well-built and fairly priced kit. So, that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Kit, fitting all 1997 to 2016 Wranglers that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

I would like to know how long the arm is on the mirrors.

    rodj

    • Due to the arms not being straight on the Rugged Ridge Quick Release Black Round Mirrors it is difficult to give a length measurement for these. If straightened these would be approximately 10". Due to the bend, this puts the mirror center line out approximately 8" from the body, depending on the adjustment at the hinge.

With A Little Mod, They're Great!

This is a pretty sturdy mirror with minimal vibration, but I was having the same problem some others were having with them rotating at high speed - simple fix was to replace the plastic knob bolts with hex bolts from the hardware store, now I can crank them down tight enough, they don't move.

      Good look, bad on highway

Instillation was very easy, I liked the way they looked on my jeep, I was very happy to have mirrors and not have to turn every which way to check my corners Unfortunately.. The tightening component at the base was difficult to tighten enough that highway speed winds wouldn't push it back killing the point. Seemingly of a cheap plastic make only in that part of the connecting gears was disappointing

      Nice look; odd whistle sound

At high speed the Phillips head adjustment screws on the back of the mirrors whistle in the wind. If you're old you won't even notice, but it is a high pitched whistle that gets louder with speed. Can be fixed by putting a piece of black electrical tape over the screw heads

      Decent value but not great.

The mirrors are a good value and keep you legal. Not the best view range and a bit difficult to position initially. Given the small size, it is hard to use them for moving traffic and spotting parking space striping when reversing. They do remain nice and stable on the highway. I would just prefer something a little larger. Simple install.

Like these better than the stock mirrors

I have half doors on my 2003 Jeep Wrangler and actually ordered these to replace the stock mirrors. Takes a little getting used to to not have the "Objects in Mirror are closer then they appear" on the passenger side, but I am happy with the look.

      Great looks and performance

Bought these for my 05 TJ Rubicon and my 07 JK Sahara. We really like the retro look and the easy installation. There was little to no vibration at any speed or condition, on or off road. There is a remarkable field of view even with the smaller size. I highly recommend them.

You can keep it on with doors on

I bought this set, it comes as a pair, to ride with my doors off and be legal in CA. I installed them, swung them to the front for now (November 2017) and it does not rattle. Very easy install, I would rate 1 wrench.

      Great option for going doorless

I find it strange that a car manufacturer who produced a vehicle that is designed to have the doors removed would mount its mirrors on said doors, but I digress. So I first tried the mirror relocation kit, but once i realized that I'd have to cut the wiring harness going to power/heated mirrors, i that plan. I saw this option on the website and figured I'd give these a shot. The install couldn't have been easier. And once on the vehicle, they are steady and work very well to replace the mirrors without the doors.

      Simple, quick install mirrors

Easiest install I've ever done. These mirrors are well made, clean and functional. My only wish is that the passenger mirror would be better if it had a wider angle view like the OEM mirrors. It's a little tough to to back up, really tough to use if you're backing up a trailer, but overall it's not a deal killer for me.
