Also known as gear or jock boxes, transfer cases are found in most four-wheel drive vehicles, including Jeep YJs. These crucial components connect the transmission to the front and rear axles and are responsible for transmitting it to the wheels and tires. Standard Jeep YJ transfer cases are powered by gears or are chain driven. Because driving on smooth surfaces is much less trying than driving on rugged off-road terrain, most four-wheel drive vehicles have a special feature that lets motorists shift from two to four-wheel drive mode. Before they level the pavement, drivers can easy switch from one to the other, which will improve driving performance and reduce wear and tear on vital parts of your transmission.
