As long as drivers have been taking their vehicles off the beaten path, they have been arguing about manual and automatic transmissions. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but it seems that most off-roaders have come down on the side of the manual transmissions. In addition to getting better fuel economy and producing slightly more power, manual Jeep YJ transmissions are also easier to repair, which is a big plus for off-roading enthusiasts. However, they are a bit heavier, which may make them less attractive for less aggressive forms of the sports. But if you enjoy challenging activities such as rock crawling and racing, a manual transmission can give you more power and control in lower gears.
