Easy Install, Secure, Limited Use
Installation was as easy as it gets. Removing the two front bolts that hold the seat down was all that was necessary. Even installing the bolt blocker plate was easy... with enough knuckle clearance for my medium-large hands to work with the small hardware. Fit in the vehicle is perfect.
If your intended application is for secure storage of your carry weapon, as implied by the product name, you will have limited options in handguns that fit inside this drawer. Sub-compacts should fit, and some compacts may, but I doubt full size handguns would. I got lucky and my carry gun fits inside with maybe 1/16" clearance lengthwise, and the grip fit nicely "around" the internally protruding latch... so I'm happy. It does take a little maneuver to get it in and out without touching the latch, or the bolts that hold the drawer rails in place (which also protrude inside the useable space).
The interior dimensions posted on the Tuffy web site for this model are not accurate, my measurements show that interior width and length are both about 1/16" shorter, and usable interior length is really less than that at roughly 7", since the latch takes up about an inch of the interior length.
The Tuffy Conceal Carry Drawer w/Flip Seat (03-06 Wrangler TJ) is powder coated steel and slightly rough, with edges on the sharper side too. I was concerned about protecting the finish on my handgun with such a close fit. And as the fit is so close, things like pick-and-pluck foam, or a gun holster or rug, were out of the question. My solution was to line the drawer, and double cover the edges, with black gaffers tape, which is a 12 mils thick, vinyl backed cloth, and provides a nice soft touch.
I'm not able to keep anything extra in this like a wallet or radio faceplate, as I don't want to hinder removal of the handgun. But overall, I'm pleased as it serves the primary purpose I bought it for.
