Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler Rear Bumper, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This bumper is available as you see it here, just the bumper. It's also available as a bumper with two D-ring mounts built into it and also has the option for you to purchase this bumper with a tire carrier. So, regardless of what you're looking for on your Jeep, Smittybilt has you covered. As far as an aftermarket rear bumper goes, this is pretty much as simple as you can get. This bumper does have a two-inch receiver built into it that is tow rated, which makes it a little bit different from some of the other companies out there that don't have a tow rating for their receiver. However, other than that, this is strip down and simple. So, if you're looking for a simple look, and you're looking for a bumper that's inexpensive, this is a really nice option. Like we said, this bumper is all about simplicity. It's a steel bumper that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish to resist both rust and corrosion. It does have this tow rated two-inch receiver built into it with spots for your safety chains, which does add some function. Other than that, this is very, very simple. If you do get this bumper with the D-ring mounts on it, you get two additional recovery points that add some additional function. You can also get this bumper with a spindle and a latching mechanism that will accept Smittybilt's tire carrier, or you can get it as a full kit including the tire carrier. Tire carriers are beneficial, because if you have a larger than factory spare tire, it may not fit in the factory spare tire mount on your Jeep. And even if it does fit, the additional weight of the larger spare can cause some issues. So, getting it on to a bumper mounted carrier is a good idea. To get this bumper installed on your TJ, the first thing you'll have to do is remove your bumper end caps, and they're held on with a couple of torque screws. That will give you access to the nuts that hold the bumper onto the frame. And you'll also have to remove the two Torx bolts that hold the bumper under the frame from the underside. Once all six of those bolts are removed, the factory bumper will come off, and you can start with installing this. Now, to get this bumper installed, you wanna hold it up to the crossmember and mark the locations where you have to drill that crossmember. Now, you can drill with the gas tank in place, but be incredibly careful not to drill too far and actually make contact with the tank with your drill. Eventually, you will have to drop the tank in order to get the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember and to get the bolts in place. So it may make sense to just drop the tank before you even start drilling. Once the holes are drilled, you can put the bumper back in place, put the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember, and attach all of the bolts into the threaded holes that are in the back of the bumper. From there, you'll also replace the two bolts that hold the bumper on from the bottom of the frame rails, and you're done. The whole installation should take about three hours, give or take, because you do have to drop the tank, which makes this a little bit more of an involved install. You won't need any specialty tools to get this done, but you will need some Torx bits and a drill with some good sharp drill bits. In my opinion, this bumper is priced pretty fairly. It is very simple. However, it has a functional two-inch receiver, which, again, is tow rated where a lot of the other ones aren't. And even though the install's a little bit more involved, that's only something you have to do once, and you'll never have to do again. So, if you're looking for a simple bumper that is inexpensive, I think this is a nice option. So, that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler rear bumper available for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Construction. The Smittybilt SRC Rear Bumper is made from sturdy steel tubing. It has a one-piece design that is robotically welded for precision. The bumper has two-stage matte black powder-coated finish, which makes it rust resistant and durable.

Function. This Smittybilt bumper provides superior rear end protection to your jeep during off-road adventures. It features sloping ends for increased tire travel, as well as improved entry and exit.

Installation. The Jeep Wrangler rear bumper features easy, bolt-on installation and requires no drilling.

Fitment. The Smittybilt rear bumper is Class III tow rated and designed for use on 87-06 Jeep Wrangler YJ and TJ models.

    Great bumper upgrade for YJ

Installed on my 1995 YJ . Great fit and looks good too ! I was skeptical about the lower price resulting in lower quality, and was pleasantly surprised at the weight of the steel and the overall quality of the bumper. I would suggest a second person to help install . I am 63 years young and it was a bit of a struggle lining up the bolt holes. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to improve the appearance and usefulness of their Jeep !

Easy to install, however it does require some drilling. The bolts near the gas tank are tough to install. Overall, it is a great product and offers additional off-road performance.

    Nice bumper for price.

Very nice bumper for the price and it has a class III hitch. Far cheaper than buying a bumper and a trailer hitch separately. Exactly what I wanted.

Look great and inexpensive, but 2 bols oles didn't line up

After all said and done, this bumper looks great and was easy to install except 2 holes did not line up. Kind of a shame. No matter what the price, or where it is made, the holes should line up.

Great rear recovery bumper for the money

I needed a new bumper for the rear and wanted recovery points as well, this fit the budget perfect! It fits good and looks great. Only downside is that you need to drop the tank or raise the body to get four screws in the back in. Other than that, it's a good bumper.

    Great Bumper

Well made and looks great on Jeep. On 2004 TJ, no drilling. Could not install, two each side, of mounting bolts without dropping tank. Three on each side lined up perfect and should secure just fine. I left the ones I couldnt reach off because I think they are overly extra to make it meet 5000 lbs tow capacity rating which I will never use.

    Clean lines, tough install

The item is perfect for my 2006 TJ. Heavy duty bumper with great textured coating. The holes to drill were simple (with a brand new 7/16th bit). Trust. Go get a new bit. Didn't have to drop the gas tank for that part, but discovered quickly that it would've been impossible to get the innermost bolts in without dropping the tank. So...the tank was dropped and held up with a jack. I ran the tank to almost empty in case I had to go to plan b. Once everything was drilled, grabbed my son and he helped lift it in place. The pre drilled holes were 1/16 inch off, so I had to fiddle with it longer than I wanted to. But all in all, berthing worked out great. Happy with the purchase

    Never Easy

I have a 2001 Wrangler and the install is never easy. Everything has a work around, but having to drop the gas tank isn't one of the. It was also very difficult to line up the holes that had to be drilled from the template. All in all, not sure it was worth the effort.
