Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge RRC Black Rocker Armor, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. There are two versions of this armor available, one for the two-door and one for the four-door. Today I'm gonna be telling you about the construction, some of the features, and, of course, we'll talk about the pricing of this rocker armor. This is for those of you who want some rocker protection for your Jeep and also a step that will help you to get in and out of your Wrangler. This is gonna help to protect the rocker area from door dings on the road and from some light trail articles offered. If you're looking for really heavy-duty protection, there are some other rock sliders from Barricade, for instance, that have some additional mounting points and will mount a little bit more securely. These are very similar to the Rugged Ridge rocker armor nerf bars except these have an additional bar, so it's a slightly different design. These rocker guards are built from two-inch diameter steel, that is a 0.12 inch wall thickness, which does make these very strong and they will provide some protection. They're covered in a textured black powder coat finish that looks good, will match a lot of aftermarket accessories, and even match a lot of the factory black plastic accents on your JK. Now, the reason I say these aren't quite as strong as some of the other options on the market is the number of mounts and the way that they mount. This is a four-door rocker guard and it only has two mounting points, one in the back and one in the rear. As I mentioned, some other brands, Barricade, for instance, will have three mounting points for a four-door JK. Of course, that's just gonna make things a little bit stronger. These also mount on the body bushing bolts and not on the body bolts themselves. The body bolts are much larger and stronger, where the bushing bolts are a little bit smaller. So, again, once they mount on the body bolts themselves are going to be a little bit stronger than these. These will bolt directly onto your JK without the need to drill or cut anything, which makes installation really easy. The first step is to remove that larger body bolt from the front and the rear body mounts on the side of the Jeep, which will allow you access to these smaller body bushing bolts. Once these side body bushing bolts are removed you can raise the rock slider into position and use that factory hardware to reattach it to the Jeep. Once those bolts are torqued down you can reinstall the larger body bolts with the factory large washers and you're finished. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour and you won't need any specialty tools, just a good set of sockets. Any time you're installing large armor like this, especially a piece that's for a four-door JK that's a little bit heavier, it'll certainly help to have an extra set of hands around. But if you can't find a friend to help you, you can always use a torque [SP] and a jack stand. There are a lot of different brands out there making side door armor that's very similar to this. And as I mentioned, some of those will have additional mounts and some stronger mounds. The problem is that all of these are going to be right around the same price. So it really comes down to what you want. If you like this design and you need some light protection, there's nothing wrong with these. They're a good option. If you're somebody who needs even more protection and you want something that's gonna be stronger, there are all those options are out there. So if you're looking for some rocker armor and also a step to give you some light protection both on the road and off the road, I would definitely recommend taking a look at these. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge RRC Black Rocker Guards, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Steel Tube Construction. Rugged Ridge RRC Black 4-door Rocker Guards are made from heavy-duty 2" x 0.120" steel tubing to withstand the rigors of off-road trails. With an E-coat undercoating and a textured black finish, these guards are rust and corrosion resistant.

Function. Rugged Ridge rocker guards offer ultimate side protection for your jeep from rocks and debris while you ride through tough off-roads. They add a special side hoop to prevent large outcroppings.

Special Design. These Jeep Wrangler rocker guards can be easily installed without bouncing as they features a special frame mounted design. The mounting points are placed above the frame to improve ground clearance.

Fitment. Rugged Ridge rocker guards are designed for 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK 4-door models.

Wondering what size impact wrench would be used for this

KaylieW

  • The Rugged Ridge RRC Black Rocker Guards (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door) would use four 18mm center body mount bushing bolts on each body mount and eight 16mm nuts located on either side of the bolt.

    Very Happy with my purchase

Shipping was fast, great packaging. Very easy to install the instruction are very clear. On my JKU 2016 I realized after installing one side that I didn't have to loosen the big body bolts. Installation took 30 minutes tops with my lovely but not mechanically inclined assistant.

    Easy install, they look great!

My 3rd Jeep is not lifted, BFGoodrich LT265/70/R17's with a 1.75" leveling kit on the front. I did not need a full step that would turn into a shin scraper but wanted something to finish the sides off. These hug the sides nice and tight with about 1 1/4" clearance making entry and exit easy. One tip before installing is measure the on center bolt pattern and compare with the bolts on the body mounts. The front measurement on my Jeep was 3 7/8", rear was 3 3/4". The rocker guards were not, I used a big crescent wrench on one end and a pretty blonde standing on the other end to make the minor adjustments. Total install time was approx. 90 minutes...and this one is definitely a job where a second set of hands come in helpful.

Look great on the JKU, and seem TOUGH

I bought these because I wanted more of a rock slider than a side step, as some of the side protection out there stick too far out or significantly lower than the rocker panels, and leave an unsightly gap. These look awesome. I noticed one of the bolt holes on the driver's side rear did not line up properly, and did not allow me to fasten one of the bolts to the body mount. Hopefully it isn't going to present a major issue.

    Well built!

Very easy to install, looks great. It will not work with the rock guard rails however, so I needed to remove them.

    Another Good Rugged Ridge Product

Overall easy installation - look great and should be the protection I need off-road. Watch for some paint chipping, but that's really not important since they are meant to take a beating. Bolt holes next to the body mount cut out may need drilling if they don't line up (make sure you can get a socket on the nut). Overall very pleased.

    Be prepared for some grinding!

Once installed, these Rocker Guards are one of the best looking and most functional, on the market!! I've already had several complements on them! HOWEVER, their install was a real challenge!! The box channel bracket's inside dimension, differed on all 4 (3 of the 4 brackets need an additional ¼" in width). The 4th bracket (measuring exactly 5"ID) was the only one to have fit like it should have. Once over the frame's existing threaded studs, the tolerance between the nut and the wall of the channel bracket was so tight, you could not get a socket on the nut. After grinding down the flanged washer on the existing nuts and grinding down the thickness of a 16mm socket, I was able to get all but 1 of the nuts on and tightened to spec. FYI: Buying new nuts w/o flange washers was not an option, as it bumped up the socket size to 17mm. I'm thinking of putting a tac-weld on the one stud w/o a nut, but so far it's holding solid.

    Quality Product

These rocker guards not only look great but they were fairly easy to install, with the exception of a few minor alignment issues. Overall, I love their texture and color and love that their true goal is to protect, not to have a step for passengers.

    Easy Install looks great

I ordered these for my Orange Crush 2013 Wrangler Unlimited and they look and function great. They took less than an hour to install and are solid. I can see they may chip from rocks and scrapes and probably rust, but they are meant to be sacrificial. Overall a great buy.

Shipping was fast. Easy installation using airtools less the 30 minutes. Recommend these bars also to guard upper body (doors). Powder coating is tough holds up to abuse.

    Returned

These did not fit properly. The bolt holes are to close the the metal flange and didn't allow me to turn the nut on the bolt. Returned for a different style and ultimately bought weld on sliders. If they fit right these would be great for the mall parking lot as they don't offer any real protection.
