      Product Videos

Hey, guys. I'm Eric with ExtremeTerrain. In this video, I'm gonna give you my review and install of this RedRock 4x4 Steering Box Skid Plate Brace for all 1997 to 2006 TJ Wranglers. Now, you should really be checking this out if you like to take your TJ off-road and you're looking to armor up and protect as much of your exposed mechanicals as you can. Now, certain parts of the undercarriage of your Jeep are more exposed than others. And then your steering box being right here under the front bumper is not only out ahead of the front of your tires, they're also just off the line of your front left tire. What that means is if you're going to clear an obstacle with this tire, and you're just off a little bit on your line, or maybe you are on a rock and you end up sliding sideways off of it, the steering box could take the brunt of that punishment. So, ideally, you're going to want something like this skid plate from RedRock 4x4 to protect your steering box against that kind of damage. Now, this skid plate is made from the same high-quality heavy-duty steel that RedRock 4x4 puts into a lot of its products like its front and rear bumpers. It's also finished in a durable black powder coat that is going to protect your skid plate for years to come against corrosion, weathering, and other types of damage. Coming in at or around $75, it's really a no-brainer of an investment when you think about the level of protection you're going to add to a pretty critical component of your Jeep, the steering box. Not only is this a relatively affordable investment, it's also a very easy installation. I'm giving it one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. With some basic tools, you're really only gonna need about an hour at most to get this job done. So, with that said, let's go ahead and get this skid plate installed. All right, guys. The bare minimum tools we're going to use for this installation are the impact wrench, 19-millimeter and 16-millimeter sockets, and an 18-millimeter Allen socket. Optionally, if you choose to mount the third mounting point, you're going to need a drill, a Phillips head screwdriver, or a similar instrument to mark the hole as well as a small bit to start the hole and a 1.5-inch bit to drill out the hole. All right, guys. The first thing we're going to do here for this install is we're going to remove this factory bolt and we're not going to reuse it, so you can get rid of it when we're done. All right, guys. Now, that previous bolt we took out from here, use the 19-millimeter socket for that. The hardware on your Jeep might be a little bit different. This bolt, however, that we're going to take out here should be consistent. This is a factory bolt and I'm using a 16-millimeter socket to get that one out. All right, guys. Now, go ahead and grab your skid plates as well as one of the button head bolts from the kit, including a flat washer and a lock washer. And we're just gonna start it in the hole here, match it up to the factory hole. I'm just going to start that finger-tight for right now, and we're going to put in the factory bolt that we just removed from the side of the steering box. All right. Go ahead and grab this factory bolt, get it back in there. Then we're gonna tighten that up again with a 16-mil socket. All right, guys. Now, to tighten up the button head bolt we just threaded in by hand, you're going to need an 8-millimeter Allen socket. All right, guys. Now, at this step of the install, you're going to have to drill out a hole in order to accommodate the second bolt that comes with the kit. Now, in order to do that, you need to get yourself a 1.5-inch drill bit. Obviously, I wouldn't start there, I would take a center punch, mark the center of the hole that is in the skid plate bracket that we just mounted, or scour it with, say like the head of a Phillips head screwdriver, marking the center of that hole. Then start with a much smaller drill bit to create a starter hole and then work your way up to a 1.5-inch drill bit. You're gonna drill that hole in the bottom of your factory bumper, and then we're gonna just take that remaining button head bolt with washers and a nut that's all supplied in the kit. And that would be your third mounting point for this skid plate. Now, this is not a permanent installation on our fleet vehicle that we're using for this video, so I'm not going to drill any holes in our bumper, but I just wanted to lay that out for you. You're simply drilling one hole and mounting one bolt and nuts on it. After that, you can call this installation all done. All right, guys. That wraps up this review and install of this RedRock 4x4 Steering Box Skid Plate Brace for all 1997 to 2006 TJ Jeep Wranglers. And of course, for all things Wrangler, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
