The Rugged Ridge Differential Skid Plate for the Dana 30 axle is for those of you that have a 1987 and up Wrangler, and are looking to add some protection to your Dana 30. So of course the pumpkin of the axle is the lowest point that hangs down. If you do some wheeling where there are stumps or rocks that area can contact the ground or an obstacle and you can end up peeling back your differential cover, letting oil out the diff and very quickly ruining your day. So adding a skid plate like this will help to protect against that as well as helping you to slide over obstacles a little bit easier. Now you can always swap out your differential cover completely for one that is stronger and those will generally have some other benefits as well. They will have some additional cooling, they might have a dipstick or a different way of filling your differential to make servicing a little bit easier, but they're also going to be a little bit more expensive. This is going to be a simple yet effective and less expensive way of helping to protect your differential cover. This diff cover is made of three sixteens inch seal and it's covered in a black powder coat finish. This is going to install very easily on your Dana 30 Axle because you don't have to crack open the axle get involved with resealing it, RTV, changing the oil. This is just going to bolt right over top of that differential cover, again making for you very, very easy installation. So, whether you have a Dana 30 in the front of your JK, of your TJ, of your YJ, whatever Jeep you have, this is going to fit very easily and work very well. Again, very simple one out of three wrench installation will take you less than half an hour to get this bolted up. All you'll need to do is remove the five lower bolts from the differential cover, set your differential skid plate over top of the cover, and replace the bolts with the new longer ones that come in this kit. Again very simple you don't have to crack open the pumpkin, don't have to get involved with resealing with oil. This just goes right over top very, very in easy install with just a socket set. This skid plate will run you right around $60 and I do think that's a fair price for what you're getting. I think this is well built, it fits really well, and while you can spend more money by getting a full replacement differential cover, this is going to be a less expensive yet still effective way of protecting your diff. So I think this is $60 well spent. So if you're looking for an easy to install differential skid plate I definitely recommend taking a look at this one from Rugged Ridge that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

            Fit perfect

This cover fit perfectly onto my Dana 30 and provides some actual armor for your differential. I did reuse my current hardware because using the torques that they send with the kit just sounds like a bad idea. Overall good product.

            DANA 30 DIFF SKID PLATE

just purchased and installed the RR dana 30 front skid plate. it was very easy to install in about 20 minutes. i am happy with the products function and looks. i especially like the bottom holes which allow sand and other off road debris to escape and not build up. Jon San Diego

            Looks decent.

Fit and finish are excellent. The design isn’t the most esthetically pleasing however, it works. Make sure you clean up your differential prior to installing. I would recommend sanding and painting your differentials then install the “cage.”

this time the struggle was not real

many reviews suggested you could not get a socket on one of the access holes w/o grinding some of the part down to tighten. per the other suggestions I got grade 8 hardware in the same length as the junk allens included in the kit and proceeded with the install. no grinding was needed when you use a 1/4" drive extension and socket. got in unfettered and tightened down nicely. since I had it out I proceeded to use the 1/4" drive on all of the fasteners. took less than a half house including the trip to HD for the #8 hardware.

            Good but bolts aren’t

Great product but why it comes with Allen bolts in beyond me. Not as easy to torque, why not make them the same as the existing ones?

            Good armor

So I installed it and it seems very sturdy and strong being 3/16 inch steel. But error on my part led to the bolts that are given with the item becoming stripped. I feel it was my error but they seemed to have stripped way to easily. Maybe Ive hit the gym too hard but idk. I do not want to discourage anyone from it but be careful when tightening the bolts back onto the differential

            Good armor bad hardware

Hex head bolts, no washers, not grade 8. I've went out and purchased my own hardware for about $10. As a result I had to grind away a little bit of surface area so that my ratchet could fit into the bolt. Armor is solid and should get me by until I upgrade to a Dana 44 front axle. Good design just a little disappointed with the sub-standard hardware.

            Looks good once its on

Mine fit good except for the upper right bolt. I used bolts and not the allens provided. I couldn't get to the upper right with a wrench or socket. I had to grind and file a bit off in order to get to it to torx it down. I had to repaint it before installing it.

            Good protection

Pros; Good protection. Seems to be well made. Cons; They pack full of mud between diff cover and plate. The bolts that come in the kit are junk. Don’t try to use them. Go get some grade 8 bolts and replace them.

            Front Diff skid plate

When I ordered this differential skid plate I was looking for one that would protect my front pumpkin but also protect the bolts that hold the cover on and this product does the job perfectly. It is made out of 3/16” steel and powdered coated black. It really added a great look to my front end and it can definitely take a hard hit.

Sturdy, 20 minute install, just like the rear one. No leaks, no sweat. Not a fan of Allen head bolts that come with it though. Recommend it for the price.

            Easy to install, great protection!

No brainer to install, just plan on changing your oil and gasket (mine needed it anyways). Painted it with a few coats of red paint and some clear coat....looks great and the paints still there after the first weekend in the trails!

            To Be Correct Not Easy

The skid plate hardware (allen pan head bolts) implies the install is a simple remove the flange bolts and install the skid plate with the pan head bolts. Not so in my case. After installing the skid plate the old silicone seal did not hold. Remove the skid plate and differential cover and install correctly with new silicone and all flange bolts. Allen head anything usually turns into a bigger problem later on. The original flange bolts are 5/8 X 5/16. Replace them with 3/4 X 5/16 to allow for the skid plate thickness. The flange bolts will fit in all the holes. The upper bolt opening of the skid plate on the short side of the differential will not accept a socket or box end wrench. Clamp the skid plate down and open it up with a round file and flat file. Clean and dry the gasket surfaces, reassemble with silicone and flange bolts. Wait for silicone to cure and fill with new oil. Now the job is as it should have been in the first place. Differentials usually only leak a little until they are empty, then they don't leak at all.
