Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan with extremeterrain.com and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 4-inch Straight Oval Side Steps, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. There is a version of these available for both the two-door and four-door body style, and they're available in the textured black you see here, and a polished stainless finish. These are for anyone who wants a little bit of help getting into or out of their lifted or stock height JK. Now, it's important to remember that these are side steps and these are not armor. Side steps will generally have a larger and easier to use lower stepping platform than armor will. However, these are not going to hold up to trail obstacles, and they're going to decrease your ground clearance a little bit. So, depending on what you use your jeep for, these may be an inexpensive and easy to use step option if you don't need armor. These side steps are built from a tubular stainless steel, which means that even if you do get a nick or a scratch in the finish, they're going to do a good job of resisting both rust and corrosion. Like I said before, these are the 4-inch straight oval version of these steps, but they're also available in different sizes and shapes. You can get these steps in both the textured black powder coat that you see here, or a polished, stainless finish. No matter what finish you choose, they both have this non-skid stepping pad, which makes it really easy to get in and out of the jeep in wet or muddy conditions. These will help to protect your jeep against door dings in a parking lot, but to reiterate, these are not going to help you if you're out on the trail and you're looking for protection. These are designed to be a really easy install, and bolt directly to the pinch seam of your jeep, without the need to drill anything. They'll include all of the brackets and the hardware necessary to get them installed. The instructions for these can be a little bit difficult to follow, because they're designed to mount on a couple of different year ranges of Jeep, and Jeep changed the pinch seam a couple of times. So just take your time, and you'll be fine with the install. Because of that same reason, you'll also have some leftover hardware when you're finished. But again, don't be alarmed, it's completely normal. The install for these side steps should take about two hours, and you won't need any specialty tools, just some sockets and some wrenches. I would however, recommend that you do have a tap and die set handy, because depending on your year of jeep, you may be threading some bolts up into the body. And if you're somebody that takes their Jeep off-road, or even just drives it a lot, you may have some dirt and grime up in that hole and it will definitely be helpful to clear it out with a tap so you don't cross-thread your bolts. These side steps are priced really fairly for what you get. They're actually less expensive than a lot of other side steps on the market that are of similar design, and in my mind, I don't see a reason to pay more. So if you're looking for an affordable side step to help you get in and out of the jeep and you don't have the need for a heavy duty, expensive armor, these are a really nice option. So that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 Straight Oval Side Steps, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Dual Function. RedRock 4x4's 4 inch Oval Straight Side Steps will give your 2-door JK Wrangler an aggressive off-road appearance while providing a convenient step for easy entry into your lifted vehicle. Plus these Side Steps also double as side armor to provide additional protection from brush, trail hazards and door dings.

Heavy Duty Construction. Manufactured from heavy duty 4" diameter oval stainless steel tubing, these RedRock 4x4 Side Steps are completed in a textured black powder coat finish for aggressive good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Easy, Bolt-on Installation. The RedRock 4x4 Wrangler Side Step is engineered to be a direct bolt-on upgrade using just basic hand tools, so there is no drilling or cutting required for a clean straight forward installation.

Application. This RedRock 4x4 Wrangler 4" Oval Straight Side Step is designed to fit 2007 to 2017 2-door Jeep Wrangler JKs. Includes driver and passenger side.

Will this fit my 2016 Willys Wrangler without having to remove the factory fitted rock rails. If not is there a product that will? thanks

  • Unfortunately the RedRock 4x4 4 in. Straight Oval Side Step - Textured Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 2 Door) will not fit with your factory rock rails. An Item that should work with your factory rock rails would be the BARRICADE ROCK SLIDERS (07-17 WRANGLER JK 2 DOOR); Item #J100288, Which can be found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-rock-sliders-jk-j100288.html.

  • Hello, for the RedRock 4x4 4 in. Curved Oval Side Step - Gloss Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 2 Door) if you have the Rubicon Rails you will have to remove them to install the Side Steps.

Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Straight Oval Side Step - Stainless Steel (07-16 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    SS Side Steps

I purchased this item because my wife and mother were having a hard time entering my Jeep. I wanted something that would enhance the look of the Jeep and keep a street look. When the item arrived I immediately got to work installing the side steps. I seperated all the parts to see that all the items were there to complete the install. I installed the mounting brackets first on both driver side and passenger side. I made sure to only hand tighten all the hardware. I installed the side steps doing the same with the hardware. I then tightened all the hardware starting with the undercarrage going onto the rocker panel hardware and finished the job anchoring the side steps to the brackets. I was able to complete the job in about 45 minutes. They look great and my wife and mother are thrilled. Great product for the money!!

Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Curved Oval Side Steps - Stainless Steel (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Nice Look

These side side look great and installed very simply. everything I needed was in the box with extras just in case. I think the powder coat on the bracket's could be better but only time will tell if the rust up. Once I laid out everything left to right, front to back, tools etc. it took me a little over an hour that includes clean-up. I like them added 1-1/2 wheel spacers and the 3.5 lift kit is on its way. Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Straight Oval Side Steps - Textured Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Side Steps

The RedRock side steps fit the bill for what we needed. These are perfect for helping kids in and out of the jeep and for standing on, while taking the top off. Great price, appearance, and the parts lined up well for install.. These are side steps and not protection from rocks. The instructions could use a little work. For example, there are plenty of extra parts and the instructions do not clearly label the bolt and part sizes. The extra parts are great as this allows the steps to have adaptability for install. However, the lack of knowing what size bolt to use for each application made the layout and organization of parts to actually take the most time. Once the appropriate parts, for my application, were identified the install went extremely quick.

Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Curved Oval Side Steps - Gloss Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

Good One Size Fits Most Design

This was one of my first installs. My partner is on the short size and I needed to be able to help them get in the Jeep. The instructions left a bit to be figured out by trial and error. I got the shiny black ones, which shows mud very fast. Wish I had gone with a matte finish, but that was more expensive. Good bang for the buck, be sure to know how to figure things out as the instructions were minimally adequate.

Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Curved Oval Side Steps - Gloss Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

    2013 Side steps

I had read previous reviews on the poor installation instructions. None were in the box I received. I'm pretty handy around cars so I figured it out by looking at the brackets and holes in the underside of the jeep. I had to reconfigure the washer setup after installing the first time but it only took 15 minutes with a socket wrench to add the additional washers for both sides. Total install time 2:30 minutes without power tools and that included jacking up for easy underneath install. The side steps are lighter then I expected which leads me to believe they are made of thin metal compared to other tube style steps. Fit and finish were excellent though and they look great. My wife needed more of a flat area to step when getting in the back then standard steps. These fit the bill perfectly. I'd give a thumbs up for anyone looking for mobility but not for rock or rub protection.

    Simple design with great practicality

Great product that is well built and easy to install. It was important to me that the side step assist entering and exiting the vehicle as well as affording protection. The product performs well in both areas of concern. The installation was simple with little need for instructions.

    Great looking side steps

My vehicle is a 2011, 4 door Jeep Wrangler Sahara. This product came in well wrapped and color coded bags (left and right steps) was a good idea. The brackets were all stamped to designate which side and where it belonged to: i.e., DF means Driver side front, DC- driver side center and DR- driver side rear and so on with passenger side marked, PF, PC and PR. The product came with all the bolts and nuts required for this install. Very pleased with the outcome.

Review from RedRock 4x4 4 in. Straight Oval Side Steps - Textured Black (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Easy enough seem well made!

First let me say this......READ on each bracket where it's location goes!!!! It is stamped in the metal!!!! You noticed I emphasize this.....reason being, me being a guy and hard headed I install brackets without really looking then had to take them off after I realized my stupidity....Once you do get each bracket placed under the bolt holes of your Jeep do not tighten them down but just run them with your hand and stop. Reason being there is some play in the lateral movement of the brackets to line up the holes on the actual step. If you tighten them and they are not lined up perfectly you just have to loosen them again. Before tightening them down make sure they are canted right so as to be level. Other than that, you are golden! These really go well with the plastic stock fender flares. I would say just as well with color keyed fenders also. These are stainless powder coated so I think these should serve one well for many many years. My pictures are attached of how they look with my Gobi colored Sport.
