Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Barricade Roof Rack Basket. This roof basket is compatible with Barricade Roof Racks installed on a two door JK, a standard length TJ, or a YJ. This will not work on a Barricade Roof Rack installed on a four door JK or an LJ. This basket is for those of you who want to be able to carry some additional cargo in your TJ, JK, or YJ. So you have your Barricade Roof Rack installed, but you want to be able to carry smaller multiple items that would normally fall through the roof rack slats. The roof rack basket has a floor and some sides that are really nice for carrying smaller items, especially when in conjunction with a cargo net. If you're okay with the additional height and weight that a roof rack basket adds, this can definitely be useful. This roof rack basket is built from light weight tubular aluminum. Weight is really important whenever you're adding mass above the center of gravity, and this is a lot lighter than some of the all steel baskets that I've handled. You'll notice that it's finished with a black textured powder coat finish, which is the same as the Barricade Roof Rack so everything works really well together. This'll give you 50 inches by 70 inches of cargo space, and you'll be able to hold up to 300 pounds. The rack is designed for easy loading and unloading from the front and the back. Now some of our customers have noticed a little additional wind turbulence from having the additional tubs up on the roof, especially on a soft top Wrangler. Most roof rack companies will have roof rack baskets and other accessories that are designed to work specifically with their racks and Barricade is no different. This is designed to mount right on a Barricade Roof Rack. The nice thing about that is it will install without any drilling or cutting. It's completely bolt on and actually comes on and off without the use of any tools. Just some thumb screws. So you can put this on when you need it and take it off when you don't. All the hardware you need for the install is included, and the only additional tool you'll need is a Philips head screwdriver. The whole install will take you less than an hour. This roof rack basket is a little less expensive than some of the other baskets out there, but that's to be expected because the Barricade Roof Rack is less expensive than some of those other brands. This basket is light weight, it's strong, and it serves its purpose. I think it's worth the cost, especially when you consider all the features that it adds. So that's my review of the Barricade Roof Rack Basket that fits all Barricade Roof Racks installed on two door JKs, standard length TJs, and YJs. And you can find it right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Extra Cargo Space. A Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack Basket gives you the additional space you need to securely carry all your essential off-road cargo without sacrificing interior passenger space. This Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack Basket is perfect for your next off-road adventure or family vacation.

Lightweight Construction. Manufactured from lightweight aluminum tubing, this Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack Basket is completed in a textured black powder coat finish for aggressive good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Application. The Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack Basket is designed to fit the 1987-2018 Jeep Wranglers with a Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack System installed. Weight capacity 300 lb.

Please Note. This Roof Rack Basket does not work in conjunction with TJ Unlimited (LJ Rack: J100532) or JK Unlimited (4 Door Rack: J100173) models.

since this one does not fit the J100173, do you have one that does?

  • The Barricade Roof Rack Basket and Barricade X-Tray Roof Rack Basket are both roof baskets, and would not be compatible with each other. if you are looking for a roof rack that is compatible with either of these, we recommend the Barricade Roof Rack.

Is this roof rack compatible with a windshield mounted LED light bar? Also, will I have to remove the rack if I want to remove my soft top? Thanks

MaxfieldT

  • The Barricade Roof Rack Basket and Barricade Roof Rack are compatible with most windshield mount light bars, but clearance should be checked before final installation is made. Removing the roof rack and basket is not required to remove the soft top, however removing the roof basket and the roof rack cross bars would make removal much easier.

Hi, I have a Rugged Ridge Sherpa roof rack on my Jeep and was wondering if this basket would be able to fit on it?

RyanR

Whenever I use the basket, my jeep sways violently from side to side (like a boat rocking motion). Its fine if basket is empty but if I put anything in it, the jeep starts rocking. I've tried loading in different configurations but it still does it. Am I missing something?

Lqdpoop

Does it come with the frame?

Paul

  • No, this is only the basket to install on to the roof rack.

I think it's interesting that the install video you posted specifically says that it will not fit on an LJ, the "Application" section says it will not fit an LJ, but the "Will it fit my Wrangler" section shows that it will fit. What's the deal? Will this actually fit on an LJ with the Barricade Roof Rack installed? It looks like somebody has it on an LJ, but hard to tell. I was thinking the difference between the LJ rack and the TJ rack was just one extra cross bar for the length and cargo baskets I've used in the past didn't really care about cross bar spacing too much.

    Works but rattles

I have a wrangler unlimited and I bought the roof rack and the roof basket. The rack is well made and the fit is pretty good. Make sure you don't tighten anything until it's all bolted together. Looks good and can carry a lot of weight. Great rack for the money. Roof basket is cheap. All I can say is it works and looks ok. It makes a lot of noise and rattles. It's set up to fit in the center of the jeep which doesn't look right. I relocated the cross bars and drilled new holes and mounted the rack to the rear of the jeep and it looks way better. The cross members fit in the frame and are loose I have tried wrapping tape to fill in the gap and it helps for a while until the taped wears out from the movement. I have tried re wrapping the tubes and the siliconing around the connections and over time it vibrates and rattles. I would rather pay more for a better made rack that doesn't rattle. I lost 2 miles to the gal. With the rack on and another 2 miles per gal with the roof basket on. I only put the basket on when I need to carry my gear and deal with the rattling which is worse on the trail. I will buy a better rack when I get the money. For the money it functions but I would never buy again. Bottom line rack good Roof basket bad.

    Very much a budget basket

I wanted to like this basket - after all it checked all the boxes! The things that I thought were important to me when I entered the market were: - Light - Large - Weight capacity - Easy on/off - Inexpensive Frankly the basket achieves all of the things I THOUGHT I needed. The problem is, being my first basket, my wants were a bit skewed. What I should have been looking for is: - Quality construction - Quality hardware - Quality fitment - Low noise (not wind noise, I expect that. This is fitment noise - more later). This basket is very noisy. It creaks and groans and sounds like it is coming apart as a drive. This is exacerbated for those with a soft top. The sounds come from where the load support cross members (driver to passenger side bars) connect into the main frame. They accomplish this through a slip fit - so it is necessarily loose. What you get is two pieces of aluminum banging or leveraging against one another all the time. Next problem is the hardware. The main frame is 4 pieces (front/back, left/right). The frame fits similarly to the load support however in this case there are places for hardware to secure it. The problem is the pre-drilled holes were larger than the hardware intended for them. Finally the fitment of the different pieces is just a bit off (this is the least significant problem). If you are on a tight budget and you are OK with the areas of concern I expressed - this may be just the basket for you. After all it has held up to all the use I have put it through (multiple camping trips, heavy loads, hauling lumber from the local HD, etc.). If however you are expecting/desiring a refined product that does not rattle and does not require any trips to the hardware store for assembly, I would pass on this option.

    surprisingly bad

I bought this and the barricade roof rack together. The rack itself is awesome (see my other review). This basket was not very good. The basket material itself is ok, but the hardware it came with was terrible. the screws were too small and I could tell that the whole thing would have fallen apart if I used what was sent. I had to go the hardware store and get heavier hardware. Also the hardware for attaching the basket to the rack was not good. It looks like it was designed for attaching this basket to a standard station wagon roof rack. I was surprised that since I bought the rack and basket from the same company there was not a better fitting attachment solution. Again, I had to go to the hardware store and modify what was sent so that it wasn't rubbing metal on metal. I am going to keep it and I am sure it will be fine now but it was a real inconvenience that I am surprised that the people at barricade did not see coming.

    Barricade Roof Basket

I love how this basket looks on my jeep. I ordered the roof rack a few weeks ago and loved it and knew I had to have the basket to complete the look! The basket assembly, however, took longer than expected because it came with no instructions. I eventually figured it out, but for anybody instructions or a picture would be nice! I am pleased with both of my purchases from this company and would recommend them to anyone!

    Completes the whole package

if you have the roof rack you can't Not have the basket too! it's the perfect addition to the whole package. Because it's aluminum it will not rust and it's so lightweight 1 person can remove it if necessary.

    Not durable

Its not very durable at all. The paint scratches off with the tiniest dings. Also the tubular pipes do not fit together very well amd because of it the rattling is really loud. Other thing the screws were to small fornthe pre drilled holes. Had to go out buys screws, silicone, and felp to secure the basket and quite the noise down.

    Need better hardware

The rack is great but the mounting hardware is awful. I couldn't get it tightened up without using a pair of vice grips and two hours later it was loose again. I had to get other hardware to make it stay in place. Very disappointed

    Roof Basket

Lightweight but sturdy. Went camping with it and am able to put my Pop-up, 2 fold up cots(Heavy), 2 Tables in a bag, 2 camp chairs, My 8 man tent and an ax. Handled it all fine. It does create a lot of wind noise both loaded and empty, I am working on making some sort of wind deflector for it.

    So good so far

Some of the holes didn't line up perfectly but with a little prying ended up working out without having to modify it in anyway. I would strongly suggest drilling drain holes in the two pieces that connect to the frame. After a week there was rusty water running down my frame and when I finally drilled the drain holes about a cup and a half of water poured out of it. If you have the stock bumper and can't afford an aftermarket one you could sand and spray bed liner on the frame for appearance purposes. The plastic handles that secure the crossbars are not very good in workmanship and after tightening them down the plastic breaks off the nut. But you can still use a wrench and Allen wrench to tighten it the rest of the way.

    Rattles/Noisy

I bought this matching basket for my rack. It's decent quality material and easy to mount. However, the metal slats that make up the floor of the basket rattle and are very noisy despite being screwed to other cross members.

    GOOD LOOKING ADDITION!

Nice product, but, as I have experienced with every aftermarket product, although I gave the fit 5 stars, getting everything to go together perfectly almost never happens. But, in the end, it turned out to my satisfaction. One note, if you plan to install the roof rack and the basket, be sure to mount the front and rear cross bars on the roof rack to the very front mounting hole and the very rear mounting hole, otherwise, the basket cross bars will not line up.
