Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler Rear Bumper, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This bumper is available as you see it here, just the bumper. It's also available as a bumper with two D-ring mounts built into it and also has the option for you to purchase this bumper with a tire carrier. So, regardless of what you're looking for on your Jeep, Smittybilt has you covered. As far as an aftermarket rear bumper goes, this is pretty much as simple as you can get. This bumper does have a two-inch receiver built into it that is tow rated, which makes it a little bit different from some of the other companies out there that don't have a tow rating for their receiver. However, other than that, this is strip down and simple. So, if you're looking for a simple look, and you're looking for a bumper that's inexpensive, this is a really nice option. Like we said, this bumper is all about simplicity. It's a steel bumper that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish to resist both rust and corrosion. It does have this tow rated two-inch receiver built into it with spots for your safety chains, which does add some function. Other than that, this is very, very simple. If you do get this bumper with the D-ring mounts on it, you get two additional recovery points that add some additional function. You can also get this bumper with a spindle and a latching mechanism that will accept Smittybilt's tire carrier, or you can get it as a full kit including the tire carrier. Tire carriers are beneficial, because if you have a larger than factory spare tire, it may not fit in the factory spare tire mount on your Jeep. And even if it does fit, the additional weight of the larger spare can cause some issues. So, getting it on to a bumper mounted carrier is a good idea. To get this bumper installed on your TJ, the first thing you'll have to do is remove your bumper end caps, and they're held on with a couple of torque screws. That will give you access to the nuts that hold the bumper onto the frame. And you'll also have to remove the two Torx bolts that hold the bumper under the frame from the underside. Once all six of those bolts are removed, the factory bumper will come off, and you can start with installing this. Now, to get this bumper installed, you wanna hold it up to the crossmember and mark the locations where you have to drill that crossmember. Now, you can drill with the gas tank in place, but be incredibly careful not to drill too far and actually make contact with the tank with your drill. Eventually, you will have to drop the tank in order to get the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember and to get the bolts in place. So it may make sense to just drop the tank before you even start drilling. Once the holes are drilled, you can put the bumper back in place, put the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember, and attach all of the bolts into the threaded holes that are in the back of the bumper. From there, you'll also replace the two bolts that hold the bumper on from the bottom of the frame rails, and you're done. The whole installation should take about three hours, give or take, because you do have to drop the tank, which makes this a little bit more of an involved install. You won't need any specialty tools to get this done, but you will need some Torx bits and a drill with some good sharp drill bits. In my opinion, this bumper is priced pretty fairly. It is very simple. However, it has a functional two-inch receiver, which, again, is tow rated where a lot of the other ones aren't. And even though the install's a little bit more involved, that's only something you have to do once, and you'll never have to do again. So, if you're looking for a simple bumper that is inexpensive, I think this is a nice option. So, that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler rear bumper available for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Not a bad bumper at all

The bumper itself is actually a quality piece. The finish on it is great, and it seems quite strong. My only complaint is the fact that the bolts screw into the bumper from behind the cross member, which if any of you know , on a YJ it is a royal pain to get a wrench into the back of the cross member for the 4 middle bolts, little alone turn the wrench. I would have preferred a bolt thru the bumper type deal, but since the bumper is boxed, I can see why they did it the way they did.

Easy enough install and nice clean look

Solid bumper and instructions were fairly clear, and even came with a template to drill holes that actually worked. Very happy with the outcome and look!

    Great bumper for the price

It really cleans up the looks in the rear. The integrated receiver tube is a plus, although it was way big for my shank, causing a lot of slop. I welded beads on my shank and ground to fit the receiver. Installation was easy enough with a helper. I carefully laid out the holes to be drilled and still had to remove bumper to enlarge the holes before being able to get the inner bolts to start. The back of the fuel tank must be dropped to put in the inner bolts and tighten. I used a floor jack w/ plywood for that, then pried this way and that to align bolts with holes when jacking back up
