Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Smittybilt SRC Side Armor, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This armor is available for both two-door and four-door Wranglers. This is for anyone looking to add some light side armor protection to their Jeep, and they're a really useful step to help them get into or out of their stock or lifted height Wrangler. Now, this armor is a little bit pricey, in my opinion, for what you get. But it does give you that light protection that we talked about, and it is a pretty good step. This side armor is built from inch and three-quarter diameter, .12-inch wall thickness steel tubing, and it's covered in this textured black powder-coated finish that will help to resist corrosion and rust down the line. It also does a good job at matching a lot of other Jeep accessories and the factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. As you can see here, it has two nice, large stepping surfaces, each that have a couple of holes drilled in them, which makes them a little bit more nonslip and adds a little bit of detail to the step. Now, these are pretty well-built. The welds look solid, and they're built of a heavy material. However, it's the way that they mount that makes me think they're not quite as strong as other armor on the market. These only mount in two locations, instead of three, on the four-door that we're looking at here, and these mount using the body bushing bolts, instead of the larger main body bolts. There's a couple of reasons that this seems to be a little bit weaker than some of the other armor on the market. These'll install pretty easily onto the Jeep because they're designed to be completely bolt-on and they actually use all of your factory hardware. Now, they do have a little bit of weight to them, and especially the four-doors that are a little bit larger mean that you'll probably wanna have an extra set of hands around or at least a tall set of jack stands to hold up the weight while you get everything lined up. The installation process is pretty straightforward. You'll remove two bolts from each of the body mounts on the front and the rear of the Jeep, put the step in place, and replace the bolts. That's all there is to it. You won't need any specialty tools at all, just a regular socket set, and the whole process shouldn't take you more than an hour. Like I said before, these are a little bit pricey for what you get, in my opinion. I would like to see these mount a little bit more securely because these are designed to be armor and give you a little bit more ground clearance. Again, in my opinion, these act more like a step than armor, even though they're called side armor and they're priced like side armor. For the same amount of money as this side armor, you could get something that is gonna hold up a little bit better, even though it might not work quite as well as a step. So if you're looking for side armor of this design and you have the budget for it, this is a really well-built piece and the finish on it is really solid. However, if you're looking to do really hardcore off-roading, I would probably take the money that you would've put into these and put them into something that is a little bit more armor-like in the way that it mounts and the ground clearance that it provides. So that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Side Armor, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here, at ExtremeTerrain.com.

I have already a Smittybit SRC Classic Rock Rails S/B76636 on my 4 Door Jeep. Can I add/attach the Smittybilt 76634LT SRC Side Armor Step around or under the Rock Rails. RobertP

RobertP

  • Unfortunately no, both use the same mounting points and would get directly in the way of each other.

Could I jack up the jeep with a farm jack on these rails?

LarryS

  • The Smittybilt Rock Crawler Side Armor can be used as a jacking point, however caution should be used due to the round bars having less contact area than a flat surface

    Great Product!

The passenger side went on in about 15 minutes. Drivers side? Well, Jeep had installed the forward body mount a bit crooked. Grinding and sawing on the bars got them to fit. Other than grinding down a bit of metal on a thick weld, this was solely a Jeep problem. Make sure your body mounts are square if you don't have the capability to modify the mounting plate just a bit. I used a grinding stone on my Dremel rotary tool, and a hack saw blade on my sabre saw. I like the look, protection, and built in step these bars provide. I am very satisfied with the product.

    Great looking and protective

Easy to install and has a great wrinkle finish look, almost like a powdercoat. Great protection and it looks great on the Jeep. The only issue is that it doesn't do much as a step because it's too high to be useful. Better than no step, don't don't expect easy entry.

Great product and all around experience!

Great product. It took me a while to select a product to provide usable steps and some light rocker protection. Both sides installed easily in about 10 mins each. I didn't have help so I used a floor jack to lift and hold them in place. That method lifted the steps into position at exactly the right angle to fit into the body mounts. Fit and finish are excellent. Price was right. These replaced Red Rock sliders that did not provide a usable step.

    Very Nice side Armor

Ordered these last week and received them in 2 days. Very good wrapping and the parts were safe inside. Took some time to unwrap and just installed them on my 2015 Willys in my garage. You need a 1/2 drive deep socket and then I used a jack stand to support one end as I bolted the other side up. VERY easy to install. No issues and they look awesome.

    Just Awesome !!

I took a long time to make my final decision on which side armor to purchase for my 2016 Jeep Wrangker. I was a little concerned about the BIG yellow sticker shown in some of the photos but was very happy to find out these are not installed on the rails and are optional to install. The side rails are heavy and best installed with help from a friend. Total install time (including removal of factory installed rock rails) was about 30min without power tooks. Used standard sockets only. Overall love the rails and they look awesome !!

Built well ( Smittybilt!!!) easy install

Once I picked up just one of the side step/sliders I could feel the strength in the build. These parts are built properly. The welds are perfect, the texture coat is perfect and these have a nice weight to them. ( JK Wrangler Sport 2 door actually feels more solid and steady with the extra weight on each side while driving). The install was amazingly easy and I was able to do it alone and very quickly: A ratchet , a 5/8 socket, 4 existing body to frame mount nuts removed , slid the side step right up onto the four bolt studs and it stays in place due to the U shape design of the bracket that rests on the frame mount while you re-install and tighten the nuts. DONE and DONE. EASY! and Look great!!! I may have lucked out a bit because I read some reviews where the owner had to do some fitting in one way or another ( grinding, drilling ) I DID NOT have to do any of that and I expect most installs will not need it. I love the product and it looks great. When I talk of the price with other off-roaders the comments are " I would have expected you to have paid more for those". Soooo....I'm happy.

    Quick install, little squeaky.

Easily bolts on to the JK, Need to figure out the squeak on the front right. May need to add gasket or vinyl washers to eliminate wagon-creak noise.

    They make a knocking noise

So after I had them installed a year ago I thought there was a problem with my jeep or that they were installed incorrectly. So finally I took them the jeep to the dealership and found out the one side rail was actually making the knocking sound under my jeep..

    Awesome Armor and Step

I am super pleased with these! They look awesome, the powder coating is sturdy and they do a great job of protecting the side panels from any debris on the trail (or door dings in the parking lot) that I've come across. Great fit, would have given five stars, but required a bit of grinding to get the passenger front to fit snug without squeaking on every bump in the road from rubbing. Besides that, it's an awesome product that shipped in record time!
