Review & Install Video
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge over rider hoop for XHD front bumpers fitting all 1987 and up Wranglers that are equipped with Rugged Ridge's XHD front bumper base. Today we're gonna talk through the installation of this over rider hoop which is a very simple one out of three wrenches because this is designed to bolt directly on to those XHD bases. We're also going to talk about the construction and a few of the features of this hoop.
This is for those of you who have an XHD front bumper base and are looking to add a hoop for a little bit of additional style. This is not going to be an overly functional part, although it will help to brush some brush and tree branches away from the grill and your winch when you are on those tight trails. But, for the most part, again an aesthetic mod. It's not going to add a lot of structural strength and it doesn't have any light mounts on it so you're not going to have that functionality either. However, if you like the look of this, and you have that XHD base, this will bolt directly on there. And this is going to bolt directly onto your base, whether you have the base that is winch-ready or the non-winch base. And, of course, if you have a winch on your winch-ready bumper, this is designed to clear that winch and give you plenty of space to bolt it on. Now, those XHD bases do have a few different locations for mounting accessories from Rugged Ridge on there. However, you're not going to be able to use all of those accessories in conjunction with other accessories. So, for instance, there is a Stinger Hoop that you can add on to the XHD bumper. If you have that, that's going to use the same mounting locations as this hoop. So you can't use them both at the same time, of course. However, regardless of which type of bumper ends you have, you can use this hoop or anyone of the other hoops, because they're not going to interfere as far as the mounting points go.
This over rider hoop is made of steel tubing covered in a textured black powder coat finish and it is designed to match your XHD bumper base very well. The idea behind these modular bumpers is that when you have all the parts and pieces put together they look like they're designed to go together. And they look like they were a purpose-built bumper from the factory, but you get to customize your bumper. So, again, this is going to bolt directly on. It's going to look like it belongs there, and overall fit really well.
So for the installation, as I mentioned before, this is a very simple one out of three wrench installation because this will bolt directly on to that XHD base without a problem. This comes with the hoop and all the hardware that you need. So, all you'll do is set this on top of your bumper and use the included hardware to bolt it down. This won't take you more than an hour to get bolted on and you won't need any specialty tools to get it done, just some hand tools.
Now, when you get this out of the box, you'll notice that it does have a little bit of a lean to it. And you can install this leaning forward, or leaning back, it's completely up to you. The way that the holes are drilled in this base it can be mounted either way. It's whatever you think looks best. And the mounting hardware that's included with this does thread directly into the top of the bumper so there's no need to remove the bumper to be able to get to a nut or bolt on the underside. You'll just thread the included hardware directly into the top of the bumper where there's some capture nuts and you're good to go.
This over rider hoop is around 60 bucks. And, I guess, it doesn't seem like a bad price for it. Overall it's a very simple piece, but it does have a big visual impact on your front bumper. So I would say, if you like this look, it is worth it. And what I always say about these modular bumpers is you are probably going to spend more money on a modular bumper by the time you get all of your accessories and get it set up how you want it than you would for an off-the-shelf bumper. So if you're somebody who can find an off-the-shelf bumper that fits all of their needs and their wants, you're probably going to save a little bit of money. But if you bought the XHD base so you can build that perfect custom bumper, and this is part of it, then 60 bucks isn't too bad.
So if you have a Rugged Ridge XHD modular front bumper base on your Wrangler and you're looking to customize it, this over rider hoop is an easy bolt-on installation.
