    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge Xtreme Heavy Duty Rear Bumper, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. Today, I'm gonna tell you about the construction, the features and the installation of this bumper. This bumper is for those of you who are looking to swap your factory rear bumper with one that's going to provide a lot more protection to the back end of your Jeep. This bumper also has some additional features, the option to add a tire carrier and some recovery points that make it a really nice bumper for off-roading and for on-road driving. This is a steel bumper that's covered in E-coating and a textured black powder coat finish. That finish makes it look good but it'll also match a lot of the factory plastic black accents on the JK and a lot of other aftermarket accessories. One thing I really like about this bumper is that it's full width and it wraps around to the sides, so this is going to give you protection on road and off road from not only the back of the jeep but also from the sides. The bumper has a nice deep cutout in the center, so if you are running a larger than factory spare in your factory spare tire mounting location, you'll have some additional clearance when you open and close the tailgate to keep that tire from hitting the bumper. If you have a much larger spare tire and you're looking for a bumper-mounted spare tire carrier, you have an option with this as well. You can purchase the Rugged Ridge Tire Carrier and it'll bolt right onto this bumper without the need to drill or cut anything. As you can see, the bumper also has a couple of D-ring mounts which are really nice for recoveries, and also a small notch in the center here which will allow you to run a factory tow-rated hitch with the bumper in place. Getting this bumper mounted up on your Jeep is a pretty simple process. The first step is to remove your factory bumper by removing the two bolts in each frame rail and the two bolts across the rear center crossmember. You'll wanna hang onto to those bolts because you are going to use them in installing this bumper. You know, this bumper does come out of the box preassembled, and we had some luck simply sliding the brackets into the frame rail attached to the bumper and bolting everything up. However, the manufacturer does suggest that you remove the bolts from the bumper, and taking the brackets and the D-ring mounts off. Once you have those brackets removed, you can slide them into the frame rails, attach them with that factory hardware, and finally, bolt the bumper onto the newly installed brackets using the eight bolts that are also your D-ring mounts. The whole installation process should take you right around an hour and you won't need any specialty tools, but if you have a good set of air tools, it'll definitely speed the process along. The bumper is a little bit heavy, and of course, with being full width like this, it's a little cumbersome to move around, so having an extra set of hands will also help out. Overall, I would say that this bumper is really solidly built and I think you do get a lot of value for what you pay, especially because the bumper is a wraparound style bumper and there's a little bit more material here than there are on some other off-road bumpers. However, any way you slice it, this bumper is expensive, especially by the time you add a tire carrier onto it. You can get some other tire carrier and bumper combinations on the market for less than this bumper alone costs, let alone adding the carrier. So it really comes down to what you need and what your budget is. So if you're looking for an aftermarket rear bumper that's going to add a bunch of protection to the back of your Jeep and a couple of additional features, I would recommend taking a look at this bumper assuming you have the budget for it. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Xtreme Heavy Duty Rear Bumper fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Construction. The Rugged Ridge Xtreme Heavy Duty Rear Bumper is constructed from heavy duty steel and features an E-coated powder coat finish for added strength. The special inner mounting plate makes it great for off-road use.

Does this bumper allow any more room for a larger spare tire when using the standard door mount? 33", 34", or even 35" tires?

    SteveJ

    • Hello, with the stock door tire mount this will fit up to a 33" tire. If you add the optional spare tire carrier to the bumper it can hold up to a 35" tire. I attached the link for the optional rear tire carrier here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/rugged-ridge-xhd-tire-carrier-jk-1154625.html

Rugged Ridge Xtreme Heavy Duty Rear Bumper

First of all, my order was delivered in 2 days! How the heck can they do that? I love the look and quality of this bumper. There is plenty of steel there and it was nice to have my wife to help move it around the garage. The installation, however, can be completed by one person as the brackets are removed from the bumper for installation, thus reducing the weight. It took me about 10 minutes to take off the stock bumper, which was obviously made by Little Tykes. The stock bumper must weigh all of 25 pounds and is thin plastic. You need a short #16 metric socket to remove the stock bolts, which you use again on the new bumper. You will also need a #18 short metric socket for the bolts on the new bumper, as well as a medium screw driver to line up the bolt holes. The driver side bracket has 2 bolts on the outside frame and 1 bolt you removed from the old bumper during removal. The passenger side mounting bracket has 2 bolts on the outside frame, 1 nut plate that is removed from the new bumper and then inserted into the frame tube, and 1 bolt you removed from the old bumper during removal. That's all there is to it. Here's the only negative part of the install. The passenger side single bolt hole on the new bumper was drilled about 3/8ths inch short of where it is supposed to be. Luckily I have a drill press, so I was able to drill out the bracket and then I added an over sized washer to make it all fit. Unfortunately this turned what could have been a simple 1 hour install into a couple of hours. The drilling could also be done with a hand drill, and a couple of progressively larger drill bits to enlarge the opening. Now that I have the bumper mounted, I think it looks awesome. It is solid product and the texture is excellent. Overall it is a very impressive looking addition to my jeep.

      Dare you to hit me

This thing is 108 pound steel beast... Get that paperweight stock bumper off and get the bumper that should have come on your jeep all along. Fits snug, so you should probably have a buddy help maneuver it on (snug isn't a bad thing). Overall easy install.

      Good Solid Product

This was my first time buying a bumper for my Jeep and am very happy with the product. Very easy to take off the old bumper and hooks, but installing the rear bumper was a little tricky. This bumper comes with two adjustable plates making the holes for the nuts and bolts a little hard to line up. Not a big deal, just took a little patience. Overall a good product for the price.

Great bumper; sturdy and super strong.

Bumper installed pretty easy. 8 out of 9 bolts when it relatively easy. Had to fight to align the 9th but got it after a little work. Feels extremely sturdy and a great replacement for the plastic original bumper.

      I love this bumper!

The Rugged Ridge XHD rear bumper looks great and installed in no time at all. (roughly 3 hours with an additional tire carrier) There is no extra drilling or modifications to the Jeep itself which is a huge plus. I highly recommend this bumper if your looking for the best bang for you buck. You have options for a couple types of tire carriers, the installation is a breeze, it looks amazing and it's the right price... what more could you ask for!

      Looks good

I'm giving this bumper 4 stars because if I ever want to add the spare tire carrier it will never fit due to bolt holes being off by 1/2in. No matter how much movement or adjusting the holes never lined up. The bumper looks great though and has plenty of protection. Extreme Terrain had this to my door step 3 days after ordering.

      I like it!

Packaged was beat up but contents were well protected. No scratches or dings (box was trashed bad) wanted another brand for my build but was not going to work with my cargo rack mounts, so I chose this one. I wanted the side protection to match up to the factory fender flares. Install was not difficult and as long as you leave all the bolts loose (as per the instructions), everything lined up. One great note, I wanted to match the back D-Ring mounts with the front and they do indeed line up! (I did not want mismatched D-rings thus having to paint the ones that came with the bumper). Install time for just myself with basic hand tools was just under two hours (this included stock bumper and mud flap mount removal, and disassembly of the lower part of my cargo rack). I only have two real issues with this product, hence the four stars. 1) Price. It was about $200 more than the one I would have originally gotten that had a lot more features I wanted. 2) Fit. It doesn't run completely flush with the factory flares like my front bumper from the same company. This could be that my cargo rack mounting brackets sit directly on top of it, possibly negating it sitting flush. Overall, I am happy with this product and am actually glad my bumpers match completely.

      Good rear bumper

This rear bumper fits well if you follow the directions about when to tighten things. Hopefully the 5/32 thickness will be tough enough. Looks good with the XHD front bumper. Price seems pretty high for what you are getting, but no complaints other than that. We'll see how rust-proof it is over time.

      You should know...

I just installed mine on a 2015 Rubi. The stock bumper weighs 23 lbs. The Rugged Ridge XHD is 94 lbs. After considering hardware and the removal of the stock tow hook, the net increase in weight is 70.6 lbs. That dropped the rear of my jeep 3/8". The quality is better than the modular front bumper from RR. Overall, it is a bit high priced even on sale but if you like the look as I did, you gotta do what you gotta do.

      Gorgeous rear bumper... solid!

Rear Bumper: Much sturdier than the stock plastic bumper that comes out of the factory and fairly easy to install. The installation instructions are very straightforward. The only issue is getting all of the holes to line up between the mounts and the bumper itself, but if you carefully read the instructions it says to keep the mounts loose when attaching the bumper. If left loose, the bumper just takes a little bit of wiggling around and you'll be able to get everything bolted on and tightened up easily.

      Great bumper!

Installation was not bad. If you will have a newer JK, expect extra hardware. The tire carrier is more complex and I did them both in an afternoon. Two people make handling the bumper much easier. I recommend it for the heavy parts of the installation. It is doable alone, but much easier with an extra set of hands.

      Tough Install

The bumper arrived on time and in excellent condition. The bumper arrived completely put together and I had just installed the matching front bumper and attempted to install the rear bumper. I couldn't get the frame crossbeam hooks over the crossbeam, I tried several times as it was a snug fit to the frame and tough to maneuver. I ended up taking it to a specialty shop and they completed the install in 1 1/2 hrs. I didn't plan on that expense and that is the only reason for the 3 star fit and bang for you buck rating. Very happy with the bumper and the look it gives my JK.
