Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This item uses the term "bumper" really loosely. This is a winch plate that has the ability to add on some corners, either with or without the factory fog lights, and allows you to add some D-rings if you want to. This is much less of a bumper and more of a winch plate with some accessories that you can add. A lot of other modular bumpers on the market are modular in the sense that you can add different types of corners, different bumper hoops, different D-ring mounts, winch plates on top of them, a lot of other accessories that you can add or subtract to build yourself a custom bumper. This is modular in the sense that it comes in a few different pieces, and you assemble it, and it has a couple of accessories, like I mentioned, with and without light mounts for the corners and with D-ring mounts or without them, but it doesn't have a ton of accessories like some of those other bumpers do. Now, if you're looking for a simple stripped-down winch plate bumper, this is a really nice option that will keep your cost way down. However, if you're looking for a modular bumper that's going to give you the opportunity to add a bunch of different parts to it and really customize the function and the look, this is not going to be your item. This bumper comes out of the box in three different pieces. The main section is the winch plate that will attach to the Jeep in much the same way as your bumper would using the frame horns but also a couple of other locations a little further down the frame rail. I really like the sunken winch look that this provides. It hides about half of the winch body or more, which gives your Jeep a really finished look and a little bit of a stealthy look as well, especially if you relocate the winch solenoid pack. Some people will even argue that the sunken winch provides more airflow to the radiator because you don't have the winch sitting up in front of the grill. A lot of people will wheel in hot locations with the winch in a traditional location and not have any airflow issues, so I don't know if it actually helps, but overall, I really do like the look of a sunken winch. Aside from that center section, you have the two corners, and this comes with the corners that include a mount for your factory fog lights. That's a really nice feature, because it keeps you from having to buy additional auxiliary light, and that's pretty much it. You can add D-ring mounts if you want to, but there aren't a lot of other accessories you can add on to that. Because this bumper is so simple, it's also really inexpensive, especially compared to a lot of other stubby bumpers on the market. One thing that you will have to add to this package if you have a 2012 to 2016 JK is a vacuum pump relocation kit. The first step into installing this bumper is to install your winch onto the winch plate and install the fairlead. After that, you can mount the winch plate onto the Jeep using the rearmost mounting holes. From there, you'll remove your factory fog lights from your factory bumper, install them in the corners, and then install the corners on the Jeep. The bolts that hold the corners into place will also go through the winch place and right into the frame rail, giving you that really solid connection that you're after. If you're installing the optional D-ring mounts, you'll also install those at this time. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour, and you won't need any specialty tools, aside from a large Allen key for the button-head bolts on the front. Overall, this bumper is really heavy-duty, the finish is really nice, and it serves its purpose even though it is no-frills, and there aren't a lot of accessories that you can add on to it. If you're looking for a really simple stripped-down winch bumper, this is it, and in my opinion, it's priced really appropriately for what it is. So if you're looking for a no-frills modular winch bumper that'll save you a couple of dollars over the other options on the market, this is a nice bumper to take a look at. So that's my review of the Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Sturdy Construction. The Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper has a robust plate steel center that rests below the radiator and doesn't extend beyond your jeep's frame horns. It features an integrated winch mount as well as two steel end caps with fog light mounts for enhanced protection. The strong and heavy-duty build ensures reliable, long-term use.

Simple Installation. This Jeep Wrangler JK winch bumper doesn't require any drilling or cutting as it fits right into the factory mounting points. The simple bolt-on installation needs only basic tools. The integrated fog light mounts are compatible with OEM fog lights on your jeep.

Compatibility. This Rough Country Modular Front Winch Bumper is designed to fit JK Jeep Wrangler models from 2007-2017. The 2012-17 models will require Rough Country's Brake Pump Relocation Bracket, part# 1043, for installation.

Is there a way to attach a license plate to this style bumper?

TimothyC

  • Yes you can attach a license plate with the Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK). If you have a roller fairlead attached to your bumper for the winch, a license bracket like this https://www.extremeterrain.com/rugged-ridge-roller-fairlead-1123805.html would work.

Can you mount a stinger to this bumper?

  • We do not have a stinger for the Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK), perhaps Rough Country have one that is not listed on our site.

I have an aluminum skid plate for the sway bar disconnect motor on the Rubicon, ASFIR 4X4 part number 547111, which uses the original front bumper mounting holes for attachment. Will I be able to attach this skid plate to the bumper? I understand maybe there might have to be holes drilled to make the attachment, but will the skid plate reach or align well enough to allow attachment?

ScramblinJim

  • Hello, unfortunately we have not test fitted this with the Skid Plate for the Sway Bar Disconnect Motor, so we wouldn't be able to guarantee fitment.

    Good bumper

This is a great bumper for those on a budget. It is affordable and looks great, also its light weight keeping the weight off your front end, helping to reduce sag on the suspension. It is also very customizable, I personally have it customized to hold a light bar that it originally did not accept and it looks great! I have also seen people put stingers or bull bars on it the possibility are endless with it. I am very pleased with this purchase, and will most likely be running this bumper for a long time!

    Best bumper Choice. By far

Easy install. Make sure you have a cut off saw/ grinder. Most reviews don't talk about having to cut off the old brake vacuum pump bracket. It took all of 10 extra minutes. Not super hard but need a steady hand and a prybar. An extra person is very handy as well. Thanks Stu! D ring mounts were from smittybilt. Going to put a light bar on it I bought for my hood and never used. Tapping holes in the end caps and bolting it down. That shouldn't be too bad either. All said and done it took about 2.5 to 3 hours. I also have to go splice the wiring to the fog lights. The wires don't reach the new location. Its about 6 inches short on each side. I can get one side plugged in and the other doesn't reach. Not horrible but it didn't say anything about that gem either. Right now they are unplugged and I have the wiring zip tied inside the plate where the winch will sit eventually. Ya know. Built not bought. Overall I love the look and the build of the product. I would recommend this over a heavy overpriced tractor size bumper any day. As long as stubby is your thing. Thanks!

    Great Bumper

This is a great bumper for the money. Install was easy and straight forward. Brake pump has to be relocated, and old bracket removed. Took a few hours to install with winch, and fog light install. I would definitely recommend installing the winch when you put the bumper on or you'll have to remove it to install it at a later date.

The Rough Country Modular Front Winch Plate Bumper looks like it came from the factory.

I took my time with the instillation approx 3 hrs. in fact it took me longer to remove the old bumper than it did to install my new Rough Country Modular winch and bumper. All holes matched up, only problem I had was replacing/ lengthening the wire for one fog light. Looks and works like a much more expensive winch and bumper.Would recommend to any Jeep owner.

    Awesome product for the money

I was very happy with the fit and finish of this bumper.I started at 9:00 and was done by 1:00 but I also installed the Rough Ridge 8500 LB winch and wire it to work and had to wire the fog lights from the stock bumper.I found issues when wiring up the winch, the grounding connection is on the bottom of the winch and once you bolt bumper and winch on it is near impossible to get the ground bolt out and back in.I love the bumper and winch combination and recommend them both.

You wont find anything nicer for the price.

For being practically the cheapest bumper you could get for a JK, it is very nice and relatively easy to install. If you have a 07-11 model it would take less than 3 hours but since the 2012-13 models have the relocated brake booster, or whatever it's called, it took a little longer. Fit was pretty good just took a little muscle to force the holes to all line up at times. Also, something that I was unaware of when I bought this, you'll have to extend the fog light wiring. A very easy thing to do, you just need 4, 6" wires and 8 crimps. Enjoy your new bumper!

Looked awesome when I installed it....

It is a very easy installing bumper that looks very nice. The fog light mounts are not welded all the way around. After 1 winter I have rust on most of the welded seams. This should not be an issue on a powder coated bumper... I should not have to repaint it because of this.

    Awesome, BUT....

First, this bumper looks amazing. I have a Warn 9,500lb winch that is too big for this bumper without modification. So, I had to drill 4 new holes to mount the winch about 2 inches to the driver side. Then I had to cut a corner from the bottom part to get the bumper to drop in with the winch mounted. Then I had to cut a corner off of the passenger side fog light attachment to accommodate the larger winch. Dude!, this 2 hour install took me 5. My wife was looking at me like "I thought you knew what you were doing...." But after a shower and some food I'm over it. The bumper looks amazing especially with a monster winch!

    Very satisfied

Solid bumper for what it is. I've added D rings and an 8500lbs synthetic winch to it. I banged into a tree off-roading a few weeks ago and bent one edge of the bumper. I called Rough Country and they replaced the end cap for 50 bucks. That's the best part about this bumper, they said they get more orders for end cap replacement parts than actual bumpers if that tells you anything. Huge bonus. Installation is tricky due to the position of the fog lamps, you'll need to splice and add wire.

    Rough Country Modular Front Winch

For the money, this is an excellent bumper/winch plate. I did research the installation for a while before installing. Everything fit perfectly but I did need to run out and get a breaker bar for the bolts on the stock bumper. Also, make sure and run your fog light wires behind the bumper and not through the bumper. I ended up ordering the extensions for the fog lights and I would now have to either remove the bumper or cut the fog light lines to run them correctly. Either way, I think this bumper is fantastic and shipping was super fast (2 days) and free!

    Pretty solid little bumper.

I have to give this credit for being his sturdy and solidly built as it is for the price that it is. Getting the front holes aligned with the and pieces that hold the fog lamps was a bit of a challenge, then again I was putting them on with recovery point mounts as well. The only downside to this bumper is you do need to get fog lamp wiring harness extensions, unless you want to cut open and resolder the wiring harness for the fog lights.

I love this Bumper. Tight fit between the frame of jeep, but that's good. The Two Bolts on the bottom inside the frame was the hardest to get in and tighten. I got the relocation kit also. I have not done that one yet.

    Awesome Bumper

I ordered the modular bumper because I I wanted the look of the stubby and still able to use my fog lights. Plus most of the other bumpers I found just seemed to make the bumper sticker out to far. But the modular bumper looks great, stays close to the body of the jeep also allows the winch to sit down inside the bumper rather than the entire winch being exposed on top.
