      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. So, today we're checking out the Rough Country 9-Inch LED Projector Headlights with the Black Housing and the Clear Lens, fitting all 2018 and newer JL Wranglers. So, if you are tired of the stock performance that your headlights are giving you, you're looking for an upgrade not only in lighting performance but also in styling, this option by Rough Country is gonna be a great choice to take a look into. Now, as you can tell this is going to have some non-traditional styling when it comes to a headlight. You are going to have that black housing for a more stealthy and dynamic look upfront, which will be a great choice for any JL owner looking for that more aggressive look or that blacked-out look to the front end of their JL. And this is also going to have some accent lighting around that projector lens which is going to add, again, a non-traditional look, a very unique styling, and is also going to add a daytime running light or act as a daytime running light for the JL. Now, that is going to make you more noticeable while you're driving around on the street, but it's also going to add that additional styling. Now, these are going to be incredibly bright, especially in comparison to the factory halogen bulbs. As we know a lot of the time the factory halogen does not cut it. But this is going to almost double the lighting performance with a high lumen output, a bright white color temperature for a very modernized look, and incredible lighting performance that's going to light up the road ahead of you especially if you're struggling with driving on dark backroads or dark nights where you need that extra lighting performance. Now, with that being said, these are going to come in at roughly $500. But in my personal opinion, I think that these are a very solid light when it comes to the lighting performance, the styling, and the overall building construction. Now, in comparing this to other options available on the page, I will have to say that these are going to have a one-up considering that some of their choices may not include a LED for the projector lens. They may still continue to have a halogen. The projector lens on those is still going to do a really good job at projecting that light. However, with the LED paired with the projector lens, you're gonna get a brighter light performance. Not only that, but these are going to again have that unique styling. Some other options are set up with a more traditional setup, they may have a halo instead of the X and accent lighting that you see here. Or they may not have a daytime running light at all, they may just be multiple LEDs inside of the headlight. So, again, it kind of comes down to personal preference in design. However, if you are looking for something that's going to give you a great light output, something that is dynamic and is going to completely switch up the look and aesthetic of the front end of the JL and is built very well, then this is gonna be a great choice. Not to mention, these are pretty easy to install. Most of it is plug-and-play. There is a little bit of wiring that you'll have to do. So, I'm gonna give it a two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. It's nothing too difficult. I'll walk you right through it in just a couple of minutes. However, again, pretty easy. I would say about two hours to get the job done in your driveway with some pretty basic hand tools. So, speaking of that install, let's jump into that now.The tools that I used for my install were an impact wrench, a 10-millimeter socket, a quarter-inch drive ratchet, a trim removal tool, and a wire tool. So, the first step to our install is to pop our hood and take off our grille. Now, for this, you're gonna need a trim removal tool or you can also use a flathead screwdriver. So, along the top, we're gonna have multiple pop clips, again, we're gonna take that trim removal tool, pop up the center, and just pop them out of place. And the last one is on the corner. Now, once those are removed, we'll be able to pop this forward and take off our grille. So, all we have to do is just lift up on either end. There is gonna be a little alignment pin that's kind of holding it in place still. And then what we can do is just give it a good pull forward. On the headlight bucket, there's gonna be three fasteners. I'm going to take a 10-millimeter socket and remove the three bolts that are holding it in. Now, when that third bolt is removed, what we can do is just pull this forward and there's gonna be a plug on the back, just one, just press down on that clip and pull back, and we'll be ready to install our new headlight. So, in the kit with the headlights, we're gonna get a couple of things in addition to the headlight. So, we will have a CAN bus wiring harness. This is going to split the connection between the factory chassis harness and the headlight harness itself. This is more or less a resistor or an anti-flicker since we're swapping over from the factory halogen to an LED. And then we also are going to get a wiring harness that's going to split between both headlights and tap into our fuse box. This is going to be for our running light. Because with the factory halogen lights, we're not going to necessarily have a running light or a daytime running light should I say. So, what we're gonna do is plug these two in, run this over to the fuse box, and we can get it all connected. So, what we can do first is attach our CAN bus here. This is going to attach to our factory chassis harness. Like I mentioned before, you wanna make sure that there's a click. And then what we can do is take our headlight, making sure that it's the correct side. We can take the other side of our CAN bus harness making sure that that red locking tab is up so we can lock it down after we click it in.And then we'll be able to position that back there and zip tie it up in just a second. What we can do next is attach the daytime running light wiring harness to our headlight. Now, we're gonna be using the longer connection for the headlight itself, the shorter one is going to be on the side where the fuse box is, where we also need the line to where we are going to attach this lead to the fuse tap that's provided in the kit as well. So, I am just going to lay that down, we can line this up. There is gonna be a little notch and then there's also going to be a threaded cover. So, once that's plugged in, we can thread that on, that's gonna protect that connection. So, what we can do before we actually place our headlight into the Jeep is run this wire up and through because this is gonna have to go over to the other headlight as well as the fuse box. I'm just gonna run this along the top. You can even just lift up this cover. What I'm gonna do is just kind of lay this in the general area where we need to connect this. We'll get back to this in just a second. We wanna make sure that that headlight is mounted up first, then we can just tuck this down in there. And then this is going to tap into our fuse box. So, we'll just leave it there for the time being. What I recommend to do at this point is just take a zip tie and zip tie this out of the way. You can do this in whatever location you see best fit. And then once that's in there, what we can do is align our headlight. So, there's gonna be a post up top and down at the bottom that you need to align to get that headlight to sit flush. And then we can take our factory hardware and secure that in the factory location. I'm gonna tighten those up with that 10-millimeter socket that I used before, making sure not to over-tighten them because this is plastic. And then we can wire up our fuse. So, our next step is to take the provided fuse tab and our wire and we're gonna connect it to the fuse box. So, I'm gonna pop open the fuse box, there's a clip on either side. We can just pop this up and out of the way. So, you can use the top of your fuse box as a map.Next, what we can do before we plug in that fuse tap is to connect our daytime running light wire that's coming off the wiring harness for the headlights into the fuse tap. So, I'm gonna put that into that connector there, take a set of wire crimpers and we can just crimp that down. So, once the fuse tap is connected and we're ready to pull the fuse and put our tap in that's provided by Rough Country, what we need to do is look at our key. Now, like I said before, in the instructions, it says to use the fuse F52. That is a cigarette lighter. Now, you could potentially use that, however, in our Wrangler that circuit is open all the time. So, if you do plug this in your running lights will be on even if the Jeep and the ignition is off. Now, I am not going to do that. I'm going to utilize F45. Now, that is the cargo 12-volt cigarette lighter. However, that is going to be actuated with the ignition. Now, again, there are a number of ways to do this. There are multiple fuses that you can tap into or you can directly hardwire this wire into the running light on your fender. So, it kind of comes down to personal preference, however, I am going to utilize the F45 few slot that is going to be actuated with the ignition. So, what I'm gonna do is take out the fuse, that's gonna be this three-prong 15 amp fuse. I'm just gonna use the fuse puller, comes with the Jeep. Now, this is going to be a pretty unusual fuse considering it has three prongs and there are three slots. Now, the slots that are closest to the outside of the Jeep or the passenger side, those are gonna be utilized for the ignition. Now, the center and the one that's more inward towards the engine bay, that is going to be an open circuit that is on all the time. So, it kind of just bounces back and forth with that so you get the dual function with that, but we're only going to use one. So, this is not able to go into the fuse tap. So, what we can do is use the spare 15 amp fuse in our fuse box putting that closest to the teeth down at the bottom here. Now, there's also a five amp fuse that is provided in the kit. This is gonna protect this wire that we can pop in as well. Now, once those are popped in, we can put our fuse tap in that location. Now, like I said there are three prongs, I'm gonna be using the left and the middle. The middle and the right is going to be for an open circuit, the left and the middle is going to be for the ignition circuit. So, now that that is in there, our last step is just to attach this negative lead to a ground so I'm just going to ground it right to the side of the body. So, I'm gonna take a 10-millimeter socket and remove this bolt over on the side. You can ground this wherever you'd like. I'm just gonna ground it over here because it's the closest location. Once that nut is off the stud there, we can place that ground wire on, thread that back on, and use a 10-millimeter socket to tighten that up. Now, once that's tightened up, we can pop our fuse cover back in place. So, after the top of the fuse box is back on and the ground is grounded for that lead there, we can repeat that headlight process on the other side. So, before I install the second headlight, I did wanna stop down and tell you guys a little bit more about it, especially in comparison to our factory one, show you some of the similarities and differences between the two and why this is going to be an incredible upgrade for the front end of your JL. So, just starting off is just a brief overview of our factory headlight. We have a standard plastic housing, we have a clear lens on the front, you have that standard chrome reflector and you're gonna have a halogen bulb inside, it is a dual filament halogen bulb. Now, overall, when it comes to lighting performance it is on the mediocre side. Now, this is going to be great for stock application. If you live in a lighter area or there's a lot of light there these will do just fine. But when it comes to lighting performance, you can definitely get a big upgrade and that's where this Rough Country one steps in. So, starting off with the housing when it comes to these new headlights, this is gonna have an ABS housing on the back. We're going to have a polycarbonate lens on the front, which essentially means that it's going to be completely transparent. So, it's not gonna block any lighting performance but it's going to be incredibly strong. So, if you do take your Jeep out on the trail and you are running into brush, branches, or even any kick up, this is going to hold up. Now, the housing is also going to be IP67 rated. So, this is going to be dust and waterproof. So, if you are worried about any trail dust, or if you are taking a dunk with your Jeep, you're really not going to have to worry about that at all. Now, when it comes to lighting performance with these new lights, it's going to be an incredible upgrade. So, not only are you switching from a halogen to an LED, which is going to last longer, be a lot brighter, and have a cooler color temperature with a more moderate appearance, this is going to have a brighter light output. So, to put it into perspective, a factory low beam is going to give you roughly 1,500 lumens and about double that at the high beam, where this option is going to give you 3,000 lumens at the low beam and 6,500 lumens at the high beam, which is going to be incredibly bright. So, you are completely doubling that lighting performance and it's going to look a lot better. Not only are you going to have that benefit from the LEDs, but the projector lens in the middle is really going to help out with that as well, creating a more uniform light pattern. So, it's not gonna be as scattered as a halogen and is going to be very direct and have a clear cut when it comes to lighting performance. Not only are you just getting all of the performance and the strong build quality built out of these headlights, but you also are getting a lot of styling. Now, this is gonna have a black housing giving you kind of a blacked-out look if you're looking for something that's a little bit more aggressive and dynamic for the front end of your JL.But this is also going to have a daytime running light, and as you can see it is not a traditional daytime running light. This is going to have an X pattern and multiple accent lights on the outer border of the light itself. So, if you're looking for something that's different, something that's dynamic, you've definitely hit the nail on the head with this one. And these are going to come with a full wiring kit in order to get them wired up as you just saw. And you can do it a number of ways and kind of customize it to where you want this to be wired into. And the rest is basically plug-and-play. So, overall this is going to be a big upgrade when it comes to lighting performance and style for the front end of your JL, so what do you say we go ahead and plug these in and see how they look. After both headlights are installed, what we can do is line up our grille, give it a good press in place for the bottom retainer clips. We should hear them clip in. Then we can take our clips for the top from the factory that we removed earlier and just put them all back in.After all six clips are installed, what we can do is close up the hood and we'll be all set to go. So, that is going to wrap it up for my review and install. Make sure you like and subscribe for more videos and products just like this. And always keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
