Specs. The JK HD Adjustable Tire Mount Kit from Teraflex is made to be used with the stock hinge or a Teraflex HD Aluminum Hinged Tire Carrier, which you can buy separately or together as a set. Made from lightweight aluminum, this carrier allows single one-handed entry into the Jeep cargo area. It can be adjusted to fit up to a 35 in. tire (with the stock hinge) or a 37 inch tire (with the Teraflex HD Aluminum Hinged Tire Carrier), and completely eliminates those frustrating tailgate stresses and rattles. Made by one of the most trusted names in the industry, this is a kit you can count on.

Construction. With threaded mounting holes for mounting accessories like fuel cans, recovery jack, and others, this is simple and easy to install. You use only common hand tools and no drilling is required. You'll appreciate the factory form fitting geometry and finish, plus the CAD-designed tooling that follows the exact compound curvature of the Jeep body. The result is a carrier with OEM appearance. There is no aftermarket bumper purchased required because this carrier works with both OE and aftermarket bumpers.

Application. This Teraflex HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit is designed to fit on the 2007-2018 Wrangler JKs.

I just want to move my aftermarket wheels closer to the tailgate similar to the stock wheel. Already know my 32 inch tire clear both bumper and third brake light. Can I use the stock Bump stops if I do this or do I still need to get the extended bump stops?

JoeJ

  • The Teraflex HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit will reuse the OEM tailgate bumpers and will not need extended or modified versions of these.

Does the normal spare work with this carrier? Also, is there a third brake light option?

ShawnD

  • Hello, yes you should be able to use your spare with the Teraflex HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit and it does come with a bracket to relocate your 3rd brake light.

Does the brake light mount double as a license plate holder? I see some pictures it looks like it’s also holding the license plate.

NathanP

  • The 3rd brake light bracket can be used with a license plate, but may require slight modification based on wheel depth and style.

I have a 35in tire. Will this help me to eliminate the raddle and feel more safe with my tire back there? I don't really do off road. But I want to feel safe.

EdvinC

  • This would not help with the rattling, you want to upgrade your hinges with a hinge kit like this: https://www.extremeterrain.com/teraflex-jk-hd-aluminum-jk-4838100.html item J17795. This would replace you current stock hinges, to reinforce the tailgate and help support those larger tires, both on the road and off road.

Does this kit contain the hinge re-enforcement assembly and the adjustable tire carrier?

BobM

  • Thank you for your question! This does not come with the Hinged Tire Carrier. I attached the link to the Teraflex HD Hinged Carrier with the Adjustable Tire Mount https://www.extremeterrain.com/teraflex-hd-carrier-with-tire-jk-4838150.html

What is the max weight the new hinges can carry?

Amsden

  • The exact weight is not specified with the Teraflex HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit, but this kit can support the weight up to a 37 inch tire.

This is an awesome product. Looks as beefy as it is. I got a 35" tire and made the mistake of buying this piece by piece in hopes of saving some money. Turned out I needed everything to mount the spare. Get the kit with adjustable 3rd brake mount you'll save some time. Installation is very simple, took about 30 minutes. Follow the instructions and teraflex also has a step by step video on youtube that helps out a lot! I've had on for 3 weeks now, no rattles at all.

    Excellent durability

This tire carrier is very nice. It's been on my Jeep now for about 2 week and it holds my 35" tire very tight with no play or movement. I would highly recommend this product to anyone installing a larger spare tire!

    Teraflex tire carrier

Used on 2013 jku, running 17x8 and 35 trail grappler . No rattle or shake. Easy to install and Powdercoating seems well done. I used a better grade stainless bolt set versus using stock carrier hardware. ( probably be fine either way.) Plan on using impact to drive studs into new bracket. I can't imagine being able to do it by hand . Fit is tight ( good thing) much better system than competition. Wouldn't use on Moab but normal use , do not see any reason this product would not work for long time.

Just what I was looking for.

This is the perfect item for holding you spare tire. Everything lined up perfect. Could use better instructions and third brake light mount. Had to cut the light mount down, drill new holes, and repaint the bracket so the light wouldn't hit my rim protector. Other then that issue the mount is vary solid and well built.

Teraflex HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting

Bought this to mount 33" tire on 2015 Wrangler Sport. Installed it like the instructions said. Took it for a drive and could hear nothing but banging coming from the rear. Readjusted it and still the same problem. Called Extreme Terrain to return it and replace it with something that might work better and be more solid. They had no clue as the the problem so I called Teraflex. They said that some of the kits had received wider plastic spacers then what should have been provided and that I needed to remove spacers and tighten. If Teraflex knew of this and it was a problem then they should have checked the kit before they shipped it out and corrected the problem. I installed without the spacers and put a third bolt in where the two supplied go for good measure and it seems to be tight. Any way the overall engineering is not that sound. If you put one cylinder in another and then extent them out to accommodate a 33" tire then there is not going to be much there to grab between the cylinders. I even placed two porcelain wheel spacer I got from O'Riellys to allow for more cylinder to cylinder contact. There are better mounts like the Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire Carrier Kit though they cost more since you have to buy the HD hinge kit with it but the engineering seems more sound. In the long run I would have been better off buying that though do not know until it is mounted.

    Not bad....

Install was fairly simply and I'm not all that mechanically inclined. I bought the mounting kit because it was believed I had a broken weld (it was rattling terribly) inside my tailgate due to my 33'' tire. The kit seems to have corrected the noise problem from the tailgate but now it appears the new mount is rattling - which could totally be from my install. I also should've read the ad more thoroughly; I thought this kit came with the hinges as depicted in the ad but it doesn't.

    Rattle - Hope to fix

I bought this mounting kit to hold my 34.4" spare tire on the back. I cut about an inch off of the stock rubber spacers and then pressed the tire close up to the tailgate and it looks like a stock fitting tire. I had actually modified the 3rd break light but I thought it ruined the overall aesthetic and have removed it for now. I do notice a rattle which I think is the bottom of the tire hitting my rear bumper. I would have given it 5 stars if this were not an issue. The instructions that come with are not very clear, but there are good videos on YouTube that you can follow. Hopefully I can remedy this rattle. Otherwise, the kit seems very solid and gives a nice, clean look to the spare tire without detracting from the overall look of the jeep.

    Perfect fit!

Was looking for a tire carrier that would replicate the position of the stock tire to be close to the swing gate. This mount works perfectly with the tire to fit into the cut out of the bumper and makes it look like in came from the factory.

    does the job

After recently upgrading my wheels and tires to bigger and wider ones, I needed a new spare carrier that would be able to hold it and take some of the stress off the hindges. This product did just that. I was able to install this in less then half an hour. It fits like a glove and due to being able to adjust tore placement, it is held snug to the tail gate.

    Higher quality that factory mount

I had to replace my stock mount because I broke it backin into a tree in a tight turn-around. The factory replacement was ~$370 vs $209 for the Teraflex, which is built better and has more flexability. The only "flaw" was two washers were the wrong size (too small) and I had to make a trip to the hardware store to get the right ones for $0.52. The other "issue" is you have to press the lug bolts into the holes. Well, they don't press so easily (they can't or they wouldn't hold). Had to get creative on the bolt that goes in the center because it's far deeper inside the mount than you can reach with a hammer. Anyhow, got it done and was sure to tighten them in with the lug bolts. If you need a tire mount, buy this one!
