I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler Rear Bumper, fitting all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers. This bumper is available as you see it here, just the bumper. It's also available as a bumper with two D-ring mounts built into it and also has the option for you to purchase this bumper with a tire carrier. So, regardless of what you're looking for on your Jeep, Smittybilt has you covered. As far as an aftermarket rear bumper goes, this is pretty much as simple as you can get. This bumper does have a two-inch receiver built into it that is tow rated, which makes it a little bit different from some of the other companies out there that don't have a tow rating for their receiver. However, other than that, this is strip down and simple. So, if you're looking for a simple look, and you're looking for a bumper that's inexpensive, this is a really nice option. Like we said, this bumper is all about simplicity. It's a steel bumper that's covered in a textured black powder coat finish to resist both rust and corrosion. It does have this tow rated two-inch receiver built into it with spots for your safety chains, which does add some function. Other than that, this is very, very simple. If you do get this bumper with the D-ring mounts on it, you get two additional recovery points that add some additional function. You can also get this bumper with a spindle and a latching mechanism that will accept Smittybilt's tire carrier, or you can get it as a full kit including the tire carrier.Tire carriers are beneficial, because if you have a larger than factory spare tire, it may not fit in the factory spare tire mount on your Jeep. And even if it does fit, the additional weight of the larger spare can cause some issues. So, getting it on to a bumper mounted carrier is a good idea. To get this bumper installed on your TJ, the first thing you'll have to do is remove your bumper end caps, and they're held on with a couple of torque screws. That will give you access to the nuts that hold the bumper onto the frame. And you'll also have to remove the two Torx bolts that hold the bumper under the frame from the underside. Once all six of those bolts are removed, the factory bumper will come off, and you can start with installing this. Now, to get this bumper installed, you wanna hold it up to the crossmember and mark the locations where you have to drill that crossmember. Now, you can drill with the gas tank in place, but be incredibly careful not to drill too far and actually make contact with the tank with your drill. Eventually, you will have to drop the tank in order to get the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember and to get the bolts in place. So it may make sense to just drop the tank before you even start drilling.Once the holes are drilled, you can put the bumper back in place, put the backing plate on the other side of the crossmember, and attach all of the bolts into the threaded holes that are in the back of the bumper. From there, you'll also replace the two bolts that hold the bumper on from the bottom of the frame rails, and you're done. The whole installation should take about three hours, give or take, because you do have to drop the tank, which makes this a little bit more of an involved install. You won't need any specialty tools to get this done, but you will need some Torx bits and a drill with some good sharp drill bits.In my opinion, this bumper is priced pretty fairly. It is very simple. However, it has a functional two-inch receiver, which, again, is tow rated where a lot of the other ones aren't. And even though the install's a little bit more involved, that's only something you have to do once, and you'll never have to do again. So, if you're looking for a simple bumper that is inexpensive, I think this is a nice option. So, that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rock Crawler rear bumper available for all 1987 to 2006 Wranglers, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Do not buy
The bumper makes a ton of noise where the tire carrier locks in and you also have to drop the gas tank to install this bumper there are other products for around the same price that bolt on without dropping the tank and looks like they have a better locking system for the tire carrierHelpful (4)

Holes didn't line up, very difficult install
I had to gauge out most of the holes to fit. The design also sucks and was incredibly difficult to screw into my 97 TJ. I had to drop the gas tank over a foot and remove part of the exhaust. After all this, I still walked away with bloody hands. 3 day install.Helpful (4)

Great price for a great item!
The number fit pretty well with my jeep. The installation was a little complicated due to drilling holes into the cross member in the back. Overall, the bumper is really solid, looks fantastic, and is set at a very good price for what you get.Helpful (4)

the over all simplicity of this bumper is appealing to me. i can put my old tire carrier on it with a few modifications instead of buying a whole other tire carrier. it is super heavy duty and the finish is really nice. installed easily and nothing unexpected came up. i dropped the gas tank in the first place just to make it easier and it did. overall it is a great bumperHelpful (6)

Love the rear bumper with the tire carrier. Only thing I would change is the location of the grease fitting. It is on the top of the shaft and broke of the first time I opened the door all the way. I had to use an extractor to get there broke piece out and just threaded a small bolt in.Helpful (6)

Good look just annoying to put on
This takes way longer than three hours, I had to do this over a couple of days. You will have to drop the gas tank for sure no doubt about it. Good fit once its on though and very nice look!Helpful (7)

What I wanted
Well, what's there to say? Its a big hunk of steel that'll tow my trailer and looks pretty good. Went on easy enough and the paint looks serious, like it's going to stay on. Perfect for my tj.Helpful (8)

Great quality All bolt holes lined up. One had to be enlarge but not much. If I would not have had to take the bumper off to make the hole larger I could have installed the bumper in 30 minutes.Helpful (7)
I have the smittybilt tubular rear bumper , if I want to switch to this will I encounter any problems with the holes that I had drilled out ? Alignment issues ?
The Smittybilt SRC Classic Rear Bumper should use similar mounting holes as the Smittybilt Tubular Bumper.
What is the height and diameter of the "peg" that the tire carrier swings on? Does the peg come with a snap/lock ring?
Is this bumper tow rated?
This Smittybilt bumper is a class III rated bumper.
How wide is the bumper is it close to 54 inches
Yes, the width of the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rear Bumper is 56 inches.
I would like to buy the SRC Classic rear bumper with the tire carrier post and use the bumper without the tire carrier for now. Will the post interfere with the tailgate swing when the tailgate is fully opened? I read another comment where the grease fitting was rubbing on the bottom of the tailgate hinge.
The Smittybilt SRC Classic Rear Bumper should not cause any interference with the tailgate when installed. You will need to ensure the grease fitting is threaded completely in as clearance is tight between the post and the tailgate.
The Smittybilt SRC Classic Rear Bumper is approximately 7" in width and is only intended for use on 1987-06 Wrangler YJ & TJ models.
Unfortunately, the Smittybilt SRC Classic Rear Bumper will not work with the Smittybilt XRC rear tire carrier. The tire carrier that is compatible with this bumper can be found here: https://www.extremeterrain.com/smittybilt-src-classic-tj-yj-7665102.html
Thank you for your question! The Smittybilt SRC bumper has a Class III tow rating.
