Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge Rear Corner Guards fitting all 2007 and up JKs. These are available for both your two-door and four-door JKs, so make sure you get the right one for your Jeep, and they're available in this diamond plate finish as well as a smooth matte finish, so you have a couple of different options there. Today we're going to talk through the installation of these corner guards, which is a very simple one out of three wrenches. There is going to be a minor amount of trimming of your license-plate mount in order to get these installed, however it is something you can very do very easily with a sharp razor knife, so we are still giving this a very simple one out of three wrenches. We're also going to talk through the construction and a few of the other features of these guards. These are for those of you who want to change up the look of your Jeep. Now, these are going to provide some light protection against scratching on the corners of your Jeep, or if you already have some damage to the rear corner from off-roading and you're just looking to cover it up, these will do the trick. However, being that these are plastic, they're not going to protect the corners of your tub from hardcore off-roading damage. If you lay your Jeep over onto a rock or a stump, these are certainly going to just crack and you're still going to receive the same of damage you would if these are not installed. So these are going to be a visual mod. I think they're priced accordingly for a visual mod and, in my opinion, they're pretty well built. As far as construction goes, as I mentioned these are plastic. They do attach with 3M tape. However there is a little bit of disassembly of the Jeep to do to get them installed. We'll touch on the rest of the installation in just a minute. As I said, you can get these in a couple of different finishes. These have the diamond plate finish. You can also get these in a matte flat finish as well without the diamond plate pattern, and that really comes down to style, your build, what you're looking for on your Jeep. Other than that there isn't too much to say about these, they are pretty well built. They look like they have all of the edges were trimmed, they're clean. It's really what you would expect for a plastic-appearance part. So to get into a little bit more detail about that installation. Again, it is a very simple one out of three-wrench installation, and especially on the passenger's side it's going to be very, very simple. Now, right off the bat, any time you're installing a part that uses 3M adhesive to stick on to the Jeep, you want to make sure that the surface of the Jeep is very, very clean and you'll do that with any alcohol-based cleaner. Make sure that the surface is clean, and that you're installing these when the weather is moderate. You don't want to install these when it's 30 degrees outside, because the adhesive isn't going to set up properly and there's a chance that these would fall off. You also don't necessarily want to do these when it's 100 degrees outside, because again the adhesive won't react properly. But, nice 70-degree day, apply these on a nice, clean surface, and they're gonna stay put as long as you want them to. However, when you do want to remove these you can easily peel them off, clean the rest of the adhesive off the body of the Jeep, and it's like they were never there. So, getting back to the passenger side, the first step is to pop off the tailgate hinge covers, which just snap into place and they'll snap off very, very simply. You do not need to remove your taillights to get these installed. All you're going to do after you clean the surface is test fit the part, make sure that it's going to fit in place, that there are no other interference issues, remove it, remove all of the 3M backing that's on the inside of this piece, so you're going to want to remove all of these strips here that you can't get to from the outside. And then on the outside pieces, you want to start by removing about a two-inch tab and leaving that tab sticking up. That'll allow you to test fit the part again, make sure that you get it exactly where you want to, be able to remove the adhesive backing while the piece is in place, and then just push it to make sure that it adheres all the way around. If you have a clean surface and you do this on a nice, warm day, this is going to stick and hold up really, really well. Now, on the driver's side there's a little bit of disassembly to do. You are going to have to remove your license plate bracket in order to get this installed. There are a couple of bolts that you'll need to remove in order to get the license-plate bracket off, and a couple of the bottom ones can be a little bit difficult to get to. Sometimes, depending on which bumper you have on your Jeep, you may need to loosen or remove the bumper to get to those bolts, but most of you will be able to get to them with no problem. Once you've had the license-plate bracket removed, you unplug the wiring harness, and then follow the same exact steps you did on the passenger's side, on the driver's side. Again, you don't have to remove your taillight, you don't have to do anything with your gas fill, the only thing that you have to remove is that license plate. Now, once you have this part back installed, you can go ahead and reinstall that license-plate bracket. Make sure you plug your wiring harness back in and this is where you have to do the tiniest little bit of trimming. There are two plastic tabs on the license-plate bracket that you will have to cut off. Just use a sharp razor knife, not a big deal. And then you can bolt your license-plate bracket back up. If you loosened or removed your bumper, reinstall that, and you're finished. This whole installation shouldn't take you more than a half hour, although if you have a big, bulky, heavy rear bumper that has a big, heavy tire carrier on it, it may take you a little bit of time to remove that if you can't get to those license plate mount bolts with the bumper in place. Other than removing the license plate nut, there are no tools you need to get this done, just a good alcohol-based cleaner, and for that license plate mount all you'll need are your traditional hand tools and a good socket set. I mentioned before that I think this is an appropriately-priced piece for something that is mostly a visual or aesthetic mod. Whether you're covering up damage or you're trying to protect against damage, or you just like the look of these, these are pretty light duty. So around $100, a little over $100, I think that these are appropriately priced for the quality of the product that you receive. So whether you're looking to cover up damage, protect against light scratching or you just like the look of these corner guards, these are going to be an easy-to-install, fairly-priced option. And that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Rear Corner Guards fitting all 2007 and up JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

    Looks great, /fit, well.....

Product is mainly for looks, which it looks great. Will offer some protection against scratches from branches and such or to cover an already lightly damaged rear corner. Passenger side install was easy. Driver side, when I preFit it wasn't going to be perfect, knew there'd be a gap between gas cap area and guard off center but I was also installing locking gas cap cover at same time. Gas cap cover didn't cover entire gap in the end. Extra set of hands to help press/hold mounting tape areas would be helpful, areas of my driver side guard didn't stick so well even though I cleaned the area before hand. It's a very large area to press and hold for the tape to set properly if you're doing this by yourself. Overall, I'm happy with the product, I'd doing it again I'd make sure to have someone with me.

    Rugged Ridge Tall Corner Guards

These guards enhance the look of my wife's jeep. Easy install, save for the require removal of the license plate bracket and light. This would have been of no problem save for the horrible access to the two lower screws. Once I was able to obtain clear accessl, it took minutes to install the guards. They look good on the jeep and pair well will the new tail light guards that I installed at the same time. As for protection, I'm not sure how much protection the plastic (?) will provide, but since this is a mall princess it really doesn't matter.

    Great look for any jeep.

I love the way it looks on my jeep. Always get lots of compliments from it. I had to do a little bit of cutting for the one on the side with the license plate but it only took me five min to do. I would suggest some more 3M tape just to get it perfect in all spots and make sure your jeep is clean. I just used a clorox wipe and it stuck perfectly and hasn't moved since.

    Looks great...fit..?...debatable

Doesn't fit well and takes a lot longer to install than it said. But looks good once it's on. Just wish it was sized more accurately.

    Jeep rear body armor

The armor is little armor, made of thin plastic. More for looks, but will offer some protection I guess. Not much for the money.

    Looks great

Great looking product Only complaint is that jeep doesn't make it easy to install. I had to loosen the bumper to remove the license plate holder. Access to the two bottom screws are very limited. The product doesn't have the tab insert holes for the holder to reattach. I simply removed the tabs and reattached

cheap way to add some toughness to your jeep

this product is a pretty cool way to change up your jeep a little bit. sticks on with adhesive so no drilling or any real permanent effects. the install can be a little annoying as everything is sticky and you need to get it right the first time. but still something anyone could do.

    Not pleased

I returned this product after receiving it. I did read that the product was plastic but once I received it I was disappointed. The product looked extremely cheap to me and was only held in with 3m 2 sided tape. Don't waste your money.

    Diamond plating look, corner guards

Installation was pretty straightforward and simple. The guards look great and I receive complements daily on their look! Be careful though, when installing, the adhesive tape backing is a little difficult to get started to come off and you will need to make sure you pre-fit this product before adhering to your Jeep as repositioning isn't too easy once applied. Also, if you have a fuel filler cover (locking or not locking, it may need to be removed to properly install the driver's side corner protector armor, then reinstalled after complete. All-in-all, super happy with the look and would definitely recommend!
