      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. Today, I'm here with the RedRock 4x4 Approach front bumper, fitting all 2018 JL Wranglers. So, this is gonna be for the JL owner looking to give a little bit of refresh to the front end of their Wrangler with a sleek yet very affordable mid-width front bumper. So, this is gonna do a great job of getting an aggressive, off-road look for a refresh on the front end, while still adding a ton of functionality with a number of different benefits. Now, this is gonna be on the more simplistic side of things. However, this does still give you a bunch of utility. You do get a ton of protection out of the bull bar and on either end, you get a couple of recovery points, a winch plate, as well as some accessory mounting points. So, at the moment, this is gonna be roughly $300 on this site right now, making it one of your most affordable options. Now, that is pretty good considering front bumpers can range anywhere from $250 all the way up to a grand, and the reason why this is at the $300 mark is just be because it's gonna be a more simplistic and basic option compared to some of those other front bumpers that will have all of the bells and whistles, auxiliary lighting, they will have drop-in winch plates, and be made of lighter weight and different materials. So, this is gonna keep it on the basic side, however, if that's what you're looking for, with still a ton of functionality and a ton of protection for the front end of your JL, then this is gonna be a great option for you. The install is gonna be a very light two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, taking you about two hours to get it done with a couple of hand tools. So, speaking of the install, let's jump into that now. The tools that I used for my install today were a trim removal tool, a ratchet, a 5-inch extension, a flathead screwdriver, an 18, 16, and 8-millimeter deep socket. So, the first step in removing our bumper is to remove the pop clips that are holding the upper splash guard in place. I'm just using a flathead screwdriver do that. You can also use a trim removal tool. So, you're gonna have two on top that go into the frame rail. Also going to have six on the back here that's gonna be holding it to the bumper. Now, after all of those are out, we can remove our splash guard. So, moving on to the bottom splash guard, we're first gonna remove the two bolts that are holding it in on either side with an 8-millimeter deep socket. Then we're gonna do the same thing on the other side. So, now, we have to remove the pop clips that are holding in the front of our bottom splash guard. I'm gonna be using either a trim removal tool or a flathead screwdriver, whichever is easiest. I know that they do differ along the way because of the spacing. This one's easy to access with a trim removal tool. So, now, we're gonna remove the back panel on either side of the bumper. You're gonna use a flathead screwdriver to get the pop clips out that are holding it in. So, now, you can use an 18-millimeter deep socket and a ratchet or an impact wrench if you can squeeze it in here to remove the nuts that are holding on our bumper studs. There's gonna be eight in total, four on each frame horn. So, we are on the outer driver side right now. We're just gonna loosen those. So, after all the bolts are out, the last thing that we need to do is unplug the main harness for our two fog lights. So, we're just going to unclip that. So now, we can remove our bumper. As you can tell, sitting these two side by side, this RedRock front bumper is gonna be a lot more durable than your plastic factory front bumper. First off, it's going to be roughly the same size. However, you are getting a lot more surface area with this underneath the underbody for some extra protection. Now, this is made of a 5/32 inch steel construction and it has a 2-inch diameter tube construction for the OverRider feature, so that is going to provide a lot more protection than the plastic here would with the steel crash bar on the back. This also has a two-stage black textured powder coat finish on it to resist any rusting or corrosion, resist any surface damage on the actual bumper as well as provide you that off-road and aggressive look. So, this new front bumper is going to provide a number of different benefits that your stock front bumper is unable to give you. First off, you have this grille protection up top. I do like how this is set up compared to a lot of other options that are pretty standard on our website right now. So, instead of the only or the single OverRider feature, you do get these little extensions on the side, that is just going to provide more protection to your grille, act as a reinforcement, and just give you a couple more style points than the standard or more simplistic aftermarket front bumper. You're also getting two welded D-ring mounts on the front. That's gonna provide a more solid, and efficient, and safer recovery point than your factory tow hooks on your factory front bumper, and you also get a drop-in winch plate with this. Now, it's not a completely drop-in like how you may see on other front bumpers, but it's not gonna sit on top, so it's gonna be a little bit more protected than the standard aftermarket front bumper. This also comes with two light mounting tabs up top, as well as two cutouts on top of the actual surface or the actual top of the bumper here. This is gonna allow you to mount up any lights, any other accessories, since this does not come with OEM cutouts or any additional lighting for fog lights, so that definitely is a bonus out of this front bumper. So, enough about these two bumpers side by side, let's bolt up our new one. So now we can mount up our front bumper. We do have studs there so you don't have to worry about holding it and attaching all the bolts. Should just slide right in and then you can grab your hardware and secure it down. It actually will sit by itself, so you can leave it there and grab all of your hardware. So now we can attach our flat washers, and then you can grab your lock washers, and then you can grab your nuts. And we'll go back and tighten that down after we have everything attached. So you can do the same thing for the other side, flat washer, lock washer and then nut. The lock washer is going to put some pressure on that nut to allow it not to come off. So, that lock washer is very important. Now, you can do the outer two sides. So, if you're having trouble threading the nut on, you may need to tighten down the inner portion to pull the bumper in, but it seems like we have enough thread to at least get them on. Then we can go back and tighten them down in just a second. So, once the other side is threaded on, we can go ahead and tighten that down with a 16-millimeter deep socket. I'm also using an extension because if this comes in pretty far and I do need to clear the bumper in order to allow me to tighten it down. Now, we can thread on the other side. After you thread those on, you can take your 16-millimeter deep socket as well as your extension and tighten those down. So now we can go ahead and tighten everything down with a 16-millimeter deep socket. In the middle, you won't need the extension since you do have some room to work with. So, if you haven't already, your last step is to attach your D-Rings. That's gonna wrap it up for my review and install on the RedRock 4x4 Approach front bumper, fitting all 2018 JL Wranglers.
