    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 hitch available for all 1987-2006 Wranglers. This is available in the gloss black powder coat that you see here, and it's also available in a textured black powder coat. This is for those of you who want to be able to tow a light trailer with your Wrangler but don't currently have a hitch. Your weight you are able to tow is not limited by the hitch itself, but more by the Wrangler. The Wrangler will be able to tow 2000 pounds with the maximum of 200-pound ton weight capacity. Now, you won't be able to re-use your factory rear bumper with this hitch so you'll need to either purchase a tubular aftermarket rear bumper or you won't be able to run a rear bumper at all. Now, in my opinion, this hitch is really inexpensively priced, especially for what you get. This hitch is made of steel and it's covered in your choice of a gloss black powder coat or a textured black powder coat. And that's important because with a tubular rear bumper you are going to see a good bit of this hitch so you want to make sure that it looks good. It's gusseted so you're going to get plenty of strength from it. Again, this is not going to limit you to a weight capacity, but you will be limited by the Jeep itself. These are designed to be completely bolt-on, which makes installation pretty easy. As I mentioned, getting this installed on the Jeep is a pretty simple process. The first step is to remove whatever bumper you currently have on the Jeep, whether it's factory or you already have a tubular bumper. That's going to give you the room you need to get this installed nice and easy. If you are removing a factory TJ bumper, there are two bolts that go into the side of either frame rail and two that go in underneath the bumper, through the bumper into the frame that way. In order to get to the bolts on the sides, you will have to remove the bumper ends if you still have them installed and there are a couple of Torx bolts to remove to get those taken off. Once the factory or aftermarket bumper is out of the way, it's just a matter of bolting your new hitch onto the rear cross member using all of the included hardware. There are a couple of backing plates that are also included to give this hitch all of the strength it needs. The whole installation for the hitch shouldn't take you more than an hour, but it may take you a little bit longer to get your factory bumper or aftermarket bumper off and get your tubular bumper re-installed. I think that this hitch is reasonably priced. When you look at it, there isn't a whole lot to it, but for what it is, I think it's well built and the finish on it looks really nice as well. It is important to remember that if you want a finished product with the bumper you are going to have to purchase a tubular bumper if you don't already have one, so that may add a little bit to the price of your final product. So if you're looking to add a two-inch receiver onto your Wrangler, for towing a light trailer or for recovery purposes, I think that this is a nice option. It's important to remember that you will have to purchase a tubular rear bumper if you want to re-install a bumper because you can't have the factory bumper installed with this hitch. But as long as you're okay running a tubular bumper, or if you already have one, I think this is a nice option. So, that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 hitch fitting all 1987-2006 Wranglers that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com

Receiver Hitch. For some unknown reason Jeep did not include a Rear Receiver Hitch as standard equipment on their YJ and TJ Wrangler's, but RedRock 4x4 has you covered with their versatile 2" receiver hitch that installs exactly where the factory one should be.

Extra Towing Capacity. This RedRock 4x4 YJ, TJ receiver hitch is designed to tow up to 2000 lbs and has a maximum tongue weight rating of 200 lbs.

Heavy Duty Construction. Manufactured from heavy duty steel plate and 2" square tubing, this RedRock 4x4 Rear Receiver Hitch is completed in a gloss black powder coat finish for aggressive good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Easy, Bolt-on Installation. The RedRock 4x4 rear bumper hitch is engineered to be a direct bolt-on upgrade using just basic hand tools, so there is no drilling or cutting required for a clean straight forward installation.

Application. The RedRock 4x4 Rear Receiver Hitch is designed to fit all 1987 to 2006 Jeep Wranglers, including YJ and TJ models with a tubular rear bumper.Note: Will not fit with factory rear bumper.

Why does this say it only fits a tubular bumper? I'm looking to put a hitch on my stock 95 Wrangler.

    • The RedRock 4x4 Hitch - Gloss Black (87-06 Wrangler YJ & TJ) is not designed for use with your factory YJ rear bumper. The hitch is designed for use with a tubular rear bumper.

I have a rugged ridge rear bumper and was wondering if this hitch would work with it? Be easier if I could add a picture of it but would like to know before I order it and find out myself

    • We have not tested the RedRock 4x4 Hitch with any of Rugged Ridge's Bumpers. This hitch was designed for use with the OEM bumper, so if your new bumper sits below the height of the OEM bumper, we recommend against using this hitch.

      Good Hitch Good Price

Needed to tow a Utility Trailer and found this Hitch to haul around my 800lb Lawn Tractor. Great price and very simple to install, would recommend highly for anyone that need to haul anything under 2000lb. Also it does not look bad at all, I like the looks of it better than the original Bumper. It also gives better protection to the Fuel Tank because it sets lower than the Bumper but not to low.

      Over-Engineeted

Incredible thick metal. Great buy. Works perfect on 1995 Jeep Wrangler. Had to grind slots on OEM bumperettes so I could still use as well but no big deal.

Hitch is great alternative for better departure angles

I wanted a flush bumper with a hitch and not willing to pay $400~$500 for one I got this one and its a perfect fit. You do need a powerful drill to make 2 holes on each side though but other than that its easy to install.

      A Great Fit

I removed my tube bumper and bolted this in place using the existing bolt patterns on my 89 YJ. My tube bumper bolted right on to the hitch bracket using the holes provided. A great fit and a great look. Thanks for a top notch product.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch - Textured Black (87-06 Wrangler YJ & TJ)

      Perfect Fit

This bumper is incredible. I had the tubed chrome bumper. It had the receiver hitch welded to the bottom of it and bent it while i was towing. It wasn't designed for much strength. SO i bought this one and love it. Took maybe an hour to swap them. Bolted right on. However, i had to take my exhaust mount off for the back of the exhaust so that it would sit low enough to pass the bumper/hitch. but i love it. Tow a small trailer or put my bike rack on and go. Excellent purchase.

      Not bad

Took much longer to remove the old bumper, than to install the new hitch. Some bolts came out easy, some broke off, some had to be drilled out. The new hitch installed in about 10 minutes, but I decided that just 2 mounting bolts on each side was not enough, so I drilled 2 more holes in the frame on each side, through the existing holes in the hitch, and added 4 more bolts so the hitch was more secure. It was hard to reach those bolts inside the frame crossmember, to put on washers and nuts, but I managed. So far it works well with my boat trailer, and I don't think I have any less protection than when I had the original factory bumper, so I don't think I'll add a tube bumper, though I may add rubber loading dock bumpers at each end.
