Review & Install Video
This Putco 40-inch Luminix High Power Straight LED Light Bar is for those of you who that have a 1987 and up Wrangler and are looking to add a light bar onto your Jeep but want something that you can custom mount and get a little bit creative with. Of course the traditional 50-inch light bars are designed to go over top of your windshield and there are a lot of different bolt-on brackets that you can get to mount that light bar in that location. This being a 40-inch light bar, you're not going to be able to put this light bar in that location with those brackets, however you could get a little bit creative, build your own brackets, do some drilling, if you did wanna put this light bar above the windshield. But this is really, again, for getting a little bit more creative than that. This is going to be for fabbing up some hood mounts, putting this across the front of your front bumper, maybe your rear bumper as a reverse light, putting it up on a roof rack, getting really creative with where you wanna mount this light. Now, overall that means that you are gonna get some more flexibility with where you put the light, but mounting is gonna be a little bit more challenging, so there's definitely a trade-off there. Now if we step away from the mounting aspect for a minute and just talk about the light, Putco does make a pretty high quality light. This is a light that's gonna be a little bit more expensive than some of the other ones on the market, it's gonna put out a lot of light, it's gonna be really well built and last a really long time, so you are going to get a high quality product, but you're also gonna have to pay a higher price for it.
So if you're looking for something that's easy to mount, a little less expensive, there are a ton of less expensive 50-inch LED light bars on the market. If you want something that you can customize and that's a very high quality light bar, then I think you're looking in the right place with this Luminix 40-inch from Putco.
As you can see, this is a single row LED light bar which is something that I personally really like, they're not as big and bulky as a lot of the double row LED light bars out there, and this thing is still going to put out a ton of light. The housing itself is black anodized 60-61 aluminum. This has individual 3 watt LEDs that are built right into it, and the beam pattern of these lights is right around a 15 degree beam pattern, so this is going to be a fairly focused light. It's a fairly spot-oriented light, it's not going to be overly diffused, certainly not a flood light, definitely going to be a spot pattern with this light. As with most lights, this does come with a pair of feet, so if you do just decide to drill a couple holes to mount this, you can certainly do that, or like I said before, fab up or purchase a aftermarket bolt-on mount for a 40-inch bar.
This light bar also comes with a wiring harness, which is a really nice feature, a lot of the LED light bars on the market do not come with a wiring harness, but a lot of companies offer the ability to purchase one that you can use with their light bar. This is going to come with the wiring harness and it's also going to come with weatherproof connectors on both the wiring harness and on the light itself. So the only place you have to make a connection with this light bar and wiring harness to get everything working is actually at the battery at the positive and negative, and that's gonna make installing this very, very simple.
So I am gonna stick with a one outta three wrenches for this installation because the wiring is very, very simple, but as I said before, you may have to get a little bit creative, you possibly may have to drill some holes to get this mounted up because there aren't a lot of bolt-on brackets available for a 40-inch light bar for a Wrangler. So that being said, the first step in the install is going to be figuring out where you wanna put the light bar and getting it mounted up, whether that means fabbing brackets or drilling holes. Once the light bar itself is installed, you'll go ahead and stretch your wiring harness out, you'll have the one end that plugs into the light, the other end that connects to the battery, and one leg that goes through the firewall into the dash where you'll have your switch to turn the light on and off. Once you have everything pulled into place, you have the switch installed where you want it, make the connection to the battery, plug the light into the wiring harness, and you're finished. As far as tools, you're probably gonna wanna have a socket set handy. If you are gonna be drilling holes or doing some fabricating for your bracket, of course you'll need those tools. And as far as wiring goes, you're really only going to need that same socket set, maybe some zip ties to clean up the wiring.
This is an $850 40-inch single row LED light bar, so it is going to be one of the more expensive 40-inch light bars that is a single row. In fact, you can get some 50-inch light bars that are double row for less expensive than this one. And then of course there are the ones that are more expensive than this one as well. But if I had to pinpoint where this falls in the price range, it is going to be toward the higher end. As I said before, you are getting a high quality light bar here, billet aluminum, you're getting something that has an IP67 waterproof rating, it's gonna last a long time, you're not gonna get condensation behind the lenses, you're not gonna get burnt out lights, but you are gonna pay premium for that quality. So if that's what you're looking for, this is gonna be a really nice option. However if you are on a bit more of a budget, there are some other light bars out there that will save you some money.
So if you're looking for a single row 40-inch light bar, I definitely recommend looking at this one from Putco, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
