    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

This is my review of the MORryde tailgate reinforcement kit, fitting all 2007 to 2017 JKs. This is designed to work with MORryde's heavy-duty tailgate hinge kit, so you will have to purchase that separately. But you can either use your factory spare tire mount, or MORryde's upgraded heavy-duty spare tire mount with this kit. There are three main problems that you can run into when running a much larger and heavier spare tire in the factory spare tire mount location. One of those problems is that the factory hinges can wear out, causing the tailgate to sag and every time you open and close the tailgate, you'll have to lift it up a little bit to get it to latch properly. Another problem is that the welds on the tailgate itself can fatigue and break, causing rattling. Finally, the factory spare tire mount does have a weight limit, and putting a heavier spare tire can cause the metal to fatigue and eventually wear out and break. Now, this setup in particular is a modular spare tire setup. What you're looking at here is the tailgate reinforcement kit that's designed to work with MORryde's heavy-duty hinges. Between those two parts, you fix two out of the three problems that you would run into from running a large, heavy spare in the factory location. The other issue that you still have to take care of is the tire mount and, as I mentioned, MORryde does have a heavy-duty tire mount that you can run with this setup. This tailgate reinforcement kit is made of laser-cut and welded steel that's covered in a textured black powder-coat finish, and it's designed to be completely bolt-on again with MORryde's heavy-duty hinge kit. So you won't have to drill into your tailgate. Everything will mount with all of the factory mounting locations. Because this is designs to be bolt-on, the installation is pretty easy. The first step is to remove your factory spare tire and spare tire mount. Then, remove the plastic covers over your factory tailgate hinges. Now, because you'll be removing those hinges, you'll want to prop up the tailgate by putting a block or a wedge of wood between your bumper and the bottom of the tailgate. That will keep everything in alignment, and make it much easier to bolt up your new hinges and eventually your tailgate reinforcement kit. After you have everything blocked up, you can remove those factory hinges one at a time, install the heavy-duty hinge kit, and then go to installing your reinforcement kit. Again, this is going to bolt right onto those heavy-duty hinges and right into your tailgate in all of the factory mounting locations. After that, it's just a matter of installing your factory spare tire mount or your MORryde heavy-duty spare tire mount, and putting your spare tire back into place. The whole process shouldn't take you more than an hour, and you won't need any specialty tools. Just some TORX bits and a good socket set. In my opinion, this piece is a little bit expensive, especially when you consider that you have to also purchase the heavy-duty hinges to use this. However, if you are on a little bit of a budget and you're not ready to spring the $700-plus for one of those kits that has everything all in one or two boxes, and you like the idea of being able to build your tire carrier, first the hinges, then the reinforcement kit, and then the tire mount, in that case, I do think that this is a nice setup. So that's my review of the MORryde tailgate reinforcement kit fitting all 2007 to 2017 JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Prevent Damage. Hit the trail in confidence with MORryde's Tailgate Reinforcement Kit. Designed to work with MORryde's heavy duty hinges, this Reinforcement Kit will help prevent damages to your tailgate from trail bumps. Its ideal for those with oversized spare tires, standing up to the extra weight where your factory equipment will eventually warp and fail. This kit will work with factory spare tire carriers, as well as most aftermarket options, allowing you to keep your current tire mount for a practical upgrade.

Durable Construction. This Reinforcement Kit is laser cut and welded to ensure reliable, rigid strength. It features a unique design that reinforces your JK's entire spare tire mount, absorbing hard hits to prevent your tailgate from breaking and warping. It is finished in a tough black powder coat for corrosion resistance and the tough styling you're used to.

Installation. This Tire Carrier Reinforcement Kit is designed for installation with MORryde's Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinge Set (sold separately.) No drilling, modification or special tools is required. You'll have all the hardware you need for installation, allowing for a straight forward process to get you out of the garage and back on the trail faster.

Application. The MORryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit is designed for installation on all 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK models equipped with the MORryde Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinge Set (item J102515,) sold separately.

Okay, I watched youtube video and the hinges look great. the tailgate reinforcment looks great as well. The tire carrier looks great. I dont run on more than 35" and the noise coming from stock hinges are driving me nuts. My question is, will this product work with stock JK tire carrier? Or do i need to buy EVERYTHING? If it does, what is the maximum tire size you would recommend. Finally, understand i am the average Jeep owner. I am not rich and i am looking to save money where I can so I can afford to run and build my Jeep. Thank you in advance for your response.

    • If you are experiencing the same tailgate rattle noise that I was experiencing, the noise is not coming from the hinges. It is coming from the broken welds from the factory tire carrier bracket inside the tailgate. I purchased the reinforcement kit without the hinges and it eliminated the rattle completely. I have a 33" spare tire and I am confident a 35" tire won't be a problem. The kit includes longer bolts that allow you to use the factory tire mount. I also used the factory hinges. I have uploaded a picture and wrote a review to describe the end result.

Will the Morryde reinforcement kit work with a Smittybilt spare tire carrier? It would be great to be able to reinforce my tailgate.

    Hk

    • This reinforcement accepts the factory spare carrier and any other spare tire carrier that bolts to the factory bolt holes in the tailgate should work fine with this reinforcement, including the Smittybilt.

After installing the reinforcement could you still install a trail basket, like a smittybilt or garvin trail basket to the tailgate?

Can I use this product with the stock hinges.

I only have a stock tire but my husband added a very large and heavy sub speaker and bolted it to the door. It is very heavy. Would this kit help with overall weight on the door or does it only reinforce the outside where the tire is?

    • The MORryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit is designed to provide reinforcement to the tire mount. This piece would not specifically beneficial to help with an internally bolted load.

I have 315/70r17 tires mounted on stock wheels. Can I use this reinforcement in conjunction with the stock tire carrier to mount my spare? I may also use a Thule Spare Me bike carrier in the summer time.

      Disappointed

Bought this because my oversize tire was causing tailgate issues. I started with the heavy duty hinges. Then I added the tire carrier. Tailgate was rattling really hard, Metal retainer snapped. So I added the reinforcement kit. Had to take everything apart to add it. But the spacers under the hinge and under the reinforcement kit were different thicknesses, so it didn't all line up properly. Finally got everything tightened down. Used the anti-seize compound that came with the bolts. Bolts don't stay fastened, which made me think I should use Loctite Blue, but then why the anti-seize compound? Bolts have to be retightened about every 50 miles, so the while tire carrier rattles. Finally gave up and ordered new rear bumper with tire carrier.

      Tailgate Reinforcement Kit - MORyde

If you already have the MORyde hinges, this is a no-brainer, especially if you are running larger than stock tires. Takes the stress off of the tailgate and works perfectly. Probably going to buy their tire carrier next.

      Good luck...

Product seems sturdy. Just don't count on being able to use the provided hardware. The 4 bolts that hold the reinforcement bracket to the hinge extensions are barely long enough to reach the lock nuts. Fully tightened, the bolts do not even go all of the way through the nylon ring in the lock nut. Between the hinges and the reinforcement bracket, there is more hardware from fastenal than from MoRyde!!!

      Morryde tailgate reinforcement

Solid and stout. No rattles. I have this mounted with the teraflex hd tire mount. They pair together very well. I like that this extends across to the drivers side unlike many other similar products.

      Tailgate reinforcement

I hit the trails at least once a week and after a couple months of use I’ve been impressed with MORryde. The hinges, tailgate reinforcement, and spare tire carrier are all very sturdy and able to handle all of the challenges of off roading.

      Excellent Product.

Install was easy and straightforward. I like the look of bumper mounted spare tires, but I don’t care for the inconvenience. This completely solved that issue. It’s strong and rugged with a fantastic powder coated finish. All the hardware is provided. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase.

      Reinforced

Straight forward and easy install....did this in conjunction with MORryde heavy duty hinges. Took my time on install and finished both hinges and reinforcement in about 2 hours. Used my Smittybilt Heavy Duty Tire Carrier with this and had to run to hardware store for a little longer bolts too Complete install.

      Very Solid and Good Quality

Tailgate reinforcement looks great and is very solid. Well built steel, well powder coated. I installed as part of entire kit with heavy duty hinges and heavy duty tire carrier from mor/ryde. I personally would only install all the pieces together, and the whole kit looks awesome and is very sturdy. Great product.

Well built and resolved the rattle I had. Directions were great and I could reuse my stock carrier with my 315/70R17! Much cheaper than the other options, has mounting points and is well built. It even has spots so you can grease the hinges, built to last.

      Tailgate reienforcement reivew

Over all I do like this product and it is well designed. It was designed by a Jeeper to work with the MORryde hinges. With that said the welds were not perfect and there were some gaps. I hope they don’t rust. They do look strong but gaps in the final welds. The bolts to hold the tire carrier on in my case 4 of them were short as I have the MOPAR CB mount . This cost me an extra 12$ to get SS at a marine store. I would recommend using some flex tape or equivalent between the tailgate and the mount as you will get chafing of the paint. Put it on the tgate not the mount. The factory carrier already causes chafing. Lots of dirt and junk can get in there. I had to adjust it several times and really crank down on the bolts as the weight of the tire drooped the door and it hit the bumper. Only time will tell how it holds up. It took me an afternoon as i was working alone and had to undo my CB and HAM antenna before I could mount this.

I recommend this product to anyone who has a aftermarket spare on their vehicle it is very strong and it stops the vibration that you might get from the factory hinges because of the weight of the aftermarket spare and took less than a hour to install the hinges and the reinforcement kit.. A

      Non-performing product, great service!

I purchased a heavy duty spare tire bracket and heavy duty hinges. Installation was simple and as advertised. My tailgate however continued to rattle with the 35" spare mounted on the back. I made one phone call to customer service and received a complete refund. I have made other purchases from Extreme Terrain and am very satisfied with all other purchases.
