This is my review of the MORryde tailgate reinforcement kit, fitting all 2007 to 2017 JKs. This is designed to work with MORryde's heavy-duty tailgate hinge kit, so you will have to purchase that separately. But you can either use your factory spare tire mount, or MORryde's upgraded heavy-duty spare tire mount with this kit. There are three main problems that you can run into when running a much larger and heavier spare tire in the factory spare tire mount location. One of those problems is that the factory hinges can wear out, causing the tailgate to sag and every time you open and close the tailgate, you'll have to lift it up a little bit to get it to latch properly. Another problem is that the welds on the tailgate itself can fatigue and break, causing rattling. Finally, the factory spare tire mount does have a weight limit, and putting a heavier spare tire can cause the metal to fatigue and eventually wear out and break. Now, this setup in particular is a modular spare tire setup. What you're looking at here is the tailgate reinforcement kit that's designed to work with MORryde's heavy-duty hinges. Between those two parts, you fix two out of the three problems that you would run into from running a large, heavy spare in the factory location. The other issue that you still have to take care of is the tire mount and, as I mentioned, MORryde does have a heavy-duty tire mount that you can run with this setup. This tailgate reinforcement kit is made of laser-cut and welded steel that's covered in a textured black powder-coat finish, and it's designed to be completely bolt-on again with MORryde's heavy-duty hinge kit. So you won't have to drill into your tailgate. Everything will mount with all of the factory mounting locations. Because this is designs to be bolt-on, the installation is pretty easy. The first step is to remove your factory spare tire and spare tire mount. Then, remove the plastic covers over your factory tailgate hinges. Now, because you'll be removing those hinges, you'll want to prop up the tailgate by putting a block or a wedge of wood between your bumper and the bottom of the tailgate. That will keep everything in alignment, and make it much easier to bolt up your new hinges and eventually your tailgate reinforcement kit. After you have everything blocked up, you can remove those factory hinges one at a time, install the heavy-duty hinge kit, and then go to installing your reinforcement kit. Again, this is going to bolt right onto those heavy-duty hinges and right into your tailgate in all of the factory mounting locations. After that, it's just a matter of installing your factory spare tire mount or your MORryde heavy-duty spare tire mount, and putting your spare tire back into place. The whole process shouldn't take you more than an hour, and you won't need any specialty tools. Just some TORX bits and a good socket set. In my opinion, this piece is a little bit expensive, especially when you consider that you have to also purchase the heavy-duty hinges to use this. However, if you are on a little bit of a budget and you're not ready to spring the $700-plus for one of those kits that has everything all in one or two boxes, and you like the idea of being able to build your tire carrier, first the hinges, then the reinforcement kit, and then the tire mount, in that case, I do think that this is a nice setup. So that's my review of the MORryde tailgate reinforcement kit fitting all 2007 to 2017 JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
Prevent Damage. Hit the trail in confidence with MORryde's Tailgate Reinforcement Kit. Designed to work with MORryde's heavy duty hinges, this Reinforcement Kit will help prevent damages to your tailgate from trail bumps. Its ideal for those with oversized spare tires, standing up to the extra weight where your factory equipment will eventually warp and fail. This kit will work with factory spare tire carriers, as well as most aftermarket options, allowing you to keep your current tire mount for a practical upgrade.
Durable Construction. This Reinforcement Kit is laser cut and welded to ensure reliable, rigid strength. It features a unique design that reinforces your JK's entire spare tire mount, absorbing hard hits to prevent your tailgate from breaking and warping. It is finished in a tough black powder coat for corrosion resistance and the tough styling you're used to.
Installation. This Tire Carrier Reinforcement Kit is designed for installation with MORryde's Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinge Set (sold separately.) No drilling, modification or special tools is required. You'll have all the hardware you need for installation, allowing for a straight forward process to get you out of the garage and back on the trail faster.
Application. The MORryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit is designed for installation on all 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK models equipped with the MORryde Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinge Set (item J102515,) sold separately.
I bought this along with the heavy hinges and it definitely helps with the scrawble noise from the tailgate. Seems very sturdy and think it’s worth getting with the hinges. I wanted to beef up the gate as I plan on eventually building a rack with jerry can holders and the stock setup seemed to be at its limits as it was.
This is a great product. Very sturdy and holds my 35" no worries. Prior to this kit I would have to lift the tailgate in order to close it. Not anymore. Knocking off 1 star because the kit was missing hardware and some vital parts. Morryde took care of me immediately and sent a new kit.

I have had the reinforcement kit installed along with MORryde's hinges and tire carrier for almost a year now. The whole setup is very sturdy and looks great. It's holding a 33" spare weighing around 84lbs. Highly recommend and wouldn't hesitate to purchase again!
Okay, I watched youtube video and the hinges look great. the tailgate reinforcment looks great as well. The tire carrier looks great. I dont run on more than 35" and the noise coming from stock hinges are driving me nuts. My question is, will this product work with stock JK tire carrier? Or do i need to buy EVERYTHING? If it does, what is the maximum tire size you would recommend. Finally, understand i am the average Jeep owner. I am not rich and i am looking to save money where I can so I can afford to run and build my Jeep.
Thank you in advance for your response.
If you are experiencing the same tailgate rattle noise that I was experiencing, the noise is not coming from the hinges. It is coming from the broken welds from the factory tire carrier bracket inside the tailgate. I purchased the reinforcement kit without the hinges and it eliminated the rattle completely. I have a 33" spare tire and I am confident a 35" tire won't be a problem. The kit includes longer bolts that allow you to use the factory tire mount. I also used the factory hinges. I have uploaded a picture and wrote a review to describe the end result.
The tailgate reinforcement is designed to work with the factory spare carrier and most any other spare carrier that uses the factory bolt holes in the tailgate.
On the advice of a rep from Extreme Terrain, I purchased and had installed the heavy duty hinges, which seemed to work fine until just recently. I had no idea that they could be used in conjunction with this particular carrier, or I would have purchased both components at the same time. As another gentleman who responded indicated, perhaps the carrier itself was the part that I actually needed, more so than the hinges. As soon as the carrier becomes available, I will be purchasing that as well.
Will the Morryde reinforcement kit work with a Smittybilt spare tire carrier? It would be great to be able to reinforce my tailgate.
This reinforcement accepts the factory spare carrier and any other spare tire carrier that bolts to the factory bolt holes in the tailgate should work fine with this reinforcement, including the Smittybilt.
I'm getting a clunk when pushing a stock size carrier against the outer sheet metal. Causing a clunk from the flexing sheet metal. does this bracket along with the hinges alleviate the pressure or the flexing of the outer sheet metal? its still mounting on the skin but I'm hoping by connection with the hinge it would take care of it
The reinforcement kit will help with the weight of the spare tire and carrier by better distributing the support. This should help with any noise or flex of the sheet metal.
With the combination of the MORryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit, MORryde Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinge Set, and MORryde Heavy Duty Spare Tire Carrier, MORyde advertises this combination for spares up to 40".
This would be for use with the MORryde heavy-duty tailgate hinge set item J102515. It would not be compatible with the factory hinges.
