    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan with ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-point Lift System, available for all 1987 to 2016 Wranglers. This system is great for those of you who have the dual tops and want somewhere to store your hard top when you have the soft top installed. Or if you just have a hard top but you live in an area where you're able to take it off for a very long time, and you wanna have the hard top stored in an area where it's not gonna get damaged or scratched. The Harken system also makes it very easy to install and remove the hard top without having to have an extra set of hands around. This is an inexpensive and effective no-frills hoist system that works no matter what year your Jeep is and what body style you have. I like this hoist system because it uses four points of contact on the ceiling that allows the load to be spread out a little bit more, and it makes me feel better about having a big heavy, expensive hard top hanging from my ceiling. Like I said, this is a no frills system. It doesn't have a crank or power to raise and lower the top. This is a manually operated block and tackle system, and everything you need to get it rigged up in your garage is included in the box. The components that are included in the kit are all of the eyelets, pulleys, rope, and the braking system that you need to get this installed, as well as a comprehensive set of installation instructions to help you along the way.I really like that this hoist is adjustable. You will need at least a 10 foot ceiling, but aside from that, the adjustability lets you install this anywhere. One thing you'll notice about this hoist system that makes it different from some of the others on the market is that this doesn't have a frame. That does keep the cost down, but it doesn't give you a place to store your freedom panels. We rigged this up in our shop just to show you how this works. But in your garage, these eyelets can be screwed into your ceiling joists. Aside from the eyelets at the four corners of the top, you also have a set of pulleys in the middle, and at the other end of the block and tackle system, you have the braking system that gets screwed into the wall. A nice feature of this braking system is that if you do lose grip of the rope when you're raising or lowering the top, the brake will come on and the top won't fall. Even with the detailed instructions that are included with this kit, you will wanna give yourself a few hours to get this installed. You'll need to have a drill handy to pre-drill for all of the eyelets and a socket set. Harken takes all the components you need to build a high quality hoist and puts them into a complete system, all at a really reasonable price. So if you're looking for a really simple system that turns what used to be a two to three person job of removing or re-installing your hard top and makes it something you came do by yourself, and gives you a safe, convenient spot to store your hard top where it's not gonna get scratched or damaged, the Harken Hoister accomplishes all of that, and it does it on a budget. So that's my review of the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-point Lift System, available for all 1987 to 2016 Wranglers that you can find right here, at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Hard Top Storage. The Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System takes eliminates the pain of storing and lifting your Wrangler's hard top. This easy to use hoist lifts the hardtop off of your Wrangler and stores it in a suspended state at the top of your garage for an easy installation at the end of the season.

Easy To Use. This hoister system is designed for 10 ft. ceilings with operation by one person and will completely change the way you address your hard top. Featuring a patented design, this hoist will lift and lower your top regardless of how the weight is distributed and includes a safety function to instantly grip the rope in the event it is accidentally released, preventing damage.

Durable Construction. Each component in this Wrangler hardtop hoist is made in the USA an designed for durability and performance. It comes with stainless steel hardware and double braided ropes to ensure superior strength for continued use.

i have an 11 1/2 foot ceiling, will his system work correctly with this height? what lumber do I need to go along with the hardware that is included? thanks brian

    brian

    • The Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System utilizes a minimum of a 10ft. ceiling height, so with your 11.5' ceilings would work together without any issues. There shouldn't be a need for any lumber to install this, it comes with Pigtail lag screws that would be installed into your garage ceiling.

    • With your clearance restrictions, it will still be possible to use the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System, however you will need to secure the rear window to prevent this from opening and possible causing damage.

Does additional wood need purchased or can this be screwed directly into the ceiling joist?

    • Hello, the installation guide recommends mounting boards. So, yes I would recommend purchasing extra wood for support for the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System.

    JustMe

    • Hello, the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System (87-17 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK) has a Maximum working load of 145 lb, so as long as the top doesn't exceed that weight you should be fine.

Simple to install and use pulley system

Hardest part about this pulley system is visualizing and measuring how exactly you are going to mount this system to the roof or rafters. In my case I had exposed rafters and drilled straight into them for the pulley system. I completed the entire job by myself with no assistance at all in just under 3 hours. Had the roof off of my jeep in under 10 minutes from removing the back screws to actually lifting the roof up. Excellent bang for your buck I highly recommend this pulley system especially if you have a lifted jeep as manually lifting the roof off with your wife is extremely difficult..

Works great...once you figure it out

The product does exactly what they claim it does. The instructions layout is a bit goofy and I ended up missing a VERY important part. This is my own stupid fault - but I will share it for everyone else. The kit comes with 4 lag screws. These are NOT for the 2 x 6 boards you use to screw into the ceiling. They are for the pulley and organizing block. You need acquire your own lag screws to use. It makes sense after the fact - but I just didn't catch it. Also - the 4" lag screws are NOT nearly long enough to mount the boards. I used 5/16" x 6" screws. I also used 8' pieces of 2 x 6 - this allowed for 4 screws on each board. If you have a really tall garage - this works well. My garage is 8.5' and it is REALLY tight but I got it. A few other bits of advice: 1. Make sure the knots are below the roof line when you tie them - otherwise you will never get the top all the way to the ceiling. 2. Get all of the knots tied and use the adjusting strap on the belts to do the final tweaking Like I said - once you figure it out - this thing is great.

      Works Great

Installed pretty easily if you know how to read instructions. Very little effort needed to lift my top off and put back on. Only have a 8'6" garage and hoist still worked fine.

      Nice, but.....

The instructions over complicate what you gotta do. And they tell you that you need a safety rope...... but don't include it

Perfect for removal and storage of a hardtop

I purchased this because I wanted to be able to remove the hardtop from my Jeep without help from other people. I also wanted to be able to store the top in an out-of-the-way place. This hoisting system is perfect. Installation was a little tricky, but if you take your time to understand the directions, you should have no problems.

      Out of the way!

My hard top used to take up a lot of floor space until now. It hangs not only higher than my head so I can walk under it, but I trust the hoist enough to hang the top over my Harley-Davidson Tri Glide!

Simple to install and easy to use

Wanting to be able to remove the hard top without begging for help from teenagers, I knew I needed a system to take it off. I searched the Internet for quite a bit and found Extreme Terrains' hoist system. The installation went fairly well. The directions were easy to follow. I'm able to access the attic above the garage which made finding the joists easier. Once installed, we had the Great Lift of 2015! I was a bit nervous, but it came off smoothly. With a tall garage, I can lift it to the ceiling and be able to walk under it. The mechanisms are smooth and easy to use. I highly recommend this product; particularly if you don't want to ask a teenager for help.

Great product. Very easy to use and makes taking the jeep hard top off fast. I made my own lift out of ratchet straps but with this lift it takes half the time and makes it very easy to store the top snug with the garage raftors.

      I'm topless

I got this product hoping to be able to take the top on and off by myself. As you are probably doing too. The hardest part about this was installing it. But that's because the parking garage I use has concrete ceilings. So I the parts to boards and then mounted the boards. Once up everything was fairly simple and easy to figure out. I didn't follow the directions, just kind of winged it. The only thing I didn't do correctly the first time was lining up the knots. I got it lifted off fairly simple but since the knots weren't lined up properly it came off at a crazy angle and wouldn't reach the ground. So after I got a little help putting it on the ground, I realigned everything and it's worked perfectly ever since. I don't have room to store it above the jeep so it has to be stored elsewhere. Just make sure your knots are lined up properly the first time and you won't have any issues at all.

      This product makes lifting easy

I must say this is a nice hoist for the money. Lifts top very smoothly with no hitching. I gave a 5 star rating due to fact that it is everything your looking for. Makes lifting by yourself easy. I installed in 2 hours. Instructions are ok, they are a little hard to follow unless you have building experience. Overall a very good product for the money

      Great product!

I was going buy the electric hoist but after reading the reviews for this product I decided to save the extra money. It took 2-3 hours to install and the directions can be complicated. We put ours up in a shed with exposed rafters. At first we mounted it to far back- the distance from the top of your jeep to the ceiling has to be the same or less than the distance from the center pulley to the back of your garage (to the block and tackle). After movingly it forward the install went great. It took me awhile to figure out the knots in the ropes but my guy did it his way and it's fine. It takes no effort to pull the top off by myself and it doesn't swing or sway. it is still cold here so I put it back on the next day, by myself. I was a bit nervous that it would drop to quickly but with the locking mechanism It works great lowering a little at a time. As you let it down, you can center it on the jeep with one hand. This worked fantastic and took 10 minutes to put on bolt it and drive away. I am so happy I got this! No more begging and pleading with children, boyfriend or friends to take the top off!! Worth every penny.

      Harken Hoister, piece of cake.

This hoist system is easy to install and works with almost no effort. I had tried to engineer my own system with ratchet straps but lowering the top smoothly was impossible. The Harken System raises and lowers the top for my Wrangler smoothly and effortlessly. The install was pretty simple, it took about an hour. The most challenging part was tying the lift ropes to the webbing. Again, not difficult but it took a couple tries to get it right. Anyone with decent knot skills I am sure would get it on the first try...
