    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan with ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-point Lift System, available for all 1987 to 2016 Wranglers. This system is great for those of you who have the dual tops and want somewhere to store your hard top when you have the soft top installed. Or if you just have a hard top but you live in an area where you're able to take it off for a very long time, and you wanna have the hard top stored in an area where it's not gonna get damaged or scratched. The Harken system also makes it very easy to install and remove the hard top without having to have an extra set of hands around. This is an inexpensive and effective no-frills hoist system that works no matter what year your Jeep is and what body style you have. I like this hoist system because it uses four points of contact on the ceiling that allows the load to be spread out a little bit more, and it makes me feel better about having a big heavy, expensive hard top hanging from my ceiling. Like I said, this is a no frills system. It doesn't have a crank or power to raise and lower the top. This is a manually operated block and tackle system, and everything you need to get it rigged up in your garage is included in the box. The components that are included in the kit are all of the eyelets, pulleys, rope, and the braking system that you need to get this installed, as well as a comprehensive set of installation instructions to help you along the way.I really like that this hoist is adjustable. You will need at least a 10 foot ceiling, but aside from that, the adjustability lets you install this anywhere. One thing you'll notice about this hoist system that makes it different from some of the others on the market is that this doesn't have a frame. That does keep the cost down, but it doesn't give you a place to store your freedom panels. We rigged this up in our shop just to show you how this works. But in your garage, these eyelets can be screwed into your ceiling joists. Aside from the eyelets at the four corners of the top, you also have a set of pulleys in the middle, and at the other end of the block and tackle system, you have the braking system that gets screwed into the wall. A nice feature of this braking system is that if you do lose grip of the rope when you're raising or lowering the top, the brake will come on and the top won't fall. Even with the detailed instructions that are included with this kit, you will wanna give yourself a few hours to get this installed. You'll need to have a drill handy to pre-drill for all of the eyelets and a socket set. Harken takes all the components you need to build a high quality hoist and puts them into a complete system, all at a really reasonable price. So if you're looking for a really simple system that turns what used to be a two to three person job of removing or re-installing your hard top and makes it something you came do by yourself, and gives you a safe, convenient spot to store your hard top where it's not gonna get scratched or damaged, the Harken Hoister accomplishes all of that, and it does it on a budget. So that's my review of the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-point Lift System, available for all 1987 to 2016 Wranglers that you can find right here, at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Hard Top Storage. The Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System takes eliminates the pain of storing and lifting your Wrangler's hard top. Featuring a patented design, this hoist will lift and lower your top regardless of how the weight is distributed and includes a safety function to instantly grip the rope in the event it is accidentally released, preventing damage.

i have an 11 1/2 foot ceiling, will his system work correctly with this height? what lumber do I need to go along with the hardware that is included? thanks brian

    • The Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System utilizes a minimum of a 10ft. ceiling height, so with your 11.5' ceilings would work together without any issues. There shouldn't be a need for any lumber to install this, it comes with Pigtail lag screws that would be installed into your garage ceiling.

Do the straps crush the weatherstripping? If not, how is it protected?

    • The straps will put some pressure onto the weather stripping, but the weight is distributed to reduce stress on the top weather stripping.

Does additional wood need purchased or can this be screwed directly into the ceiling joist?

    • Hello, the installation guide recommends mounting boards. So, yes I would recommend purchasing extra wood for support for the Harken Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System.

      A no Brainer purchase!!

Like many, I looked on Youtube, for the "how to make my own lift system". Even went and bought hooks, ratchet straps, etc... But what a slow, tedious hassle!! For the money spent on this system, it's solid, secure, easy to install, and the biggest plus for me was able to customize the location. I had to change the location of the pulley system, because I was right up against the back of my garage. Routed it through the side and works perfectly. Super easy and very secure. Couldn't be happier! MONEY WELL SPENT!!!

      Very Capable

The short review is same as others have stated, this is an extremely capable lift and serves the intended purpose. While you could spend more to get a power lift, save your money, this works. Spend the savings on other upgrades. The instructions have perhaps improved a little or I just studied the install enough to have it all go smoothly. Overall install took an hour and a half with most of that time dedicated to tying and re-tying the straps so the top lifted evenly. Bit of a hassle for sure but now that it’s done, it’s all set. Top removal was very easy, literally taking me 3-5 minutes to remove the top. Putting the top back on was just as simple. One hand to lower the top, one hand to guide to ensure it goes on straight. Extremely easy and as I stated, it just works. I really don’t see why anyone would spend 400 on a power lift. The only downside I’ll note is that there is no way to store the freedom panels. My solution is to run another strap, securing them to the top itself.

      Works Great

Hoist works great. I have shelves on back wall of garage so I did a side install. I wasn't sure that was going to lift as easy but it seems to lift and hold fine. I intend to leave it hoisted all next summer when my soft top is on. Be sure to offset pulleys to line up directly with lift points. Lift points toward front of top (by rear doors) are wider apart than at rear so space accordingly when installing in mounting board. Directions aren't super clear on that. Otherwise pretty simple install - about a few hours not including trip to hardware store.

      Better than expected

The hoist system was easy to install, the block and tackle method makes lifting effortless and it's all up and out of the way when not in use. Would recommend over trying to rig something yourself

Hoister works but should be beefed up

It works, however it is undersized - the size of the hardware (the pulleys) and the cord should be doubled or tripled in size, which would make the device much easier to use.

      Awesome hoist

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because as it states, you should not use them in lower garages. It still gets the job done though and I think we made a few adjustments to get it functioning the way it should be.

      Easy to Install and Use

It took me about 90 minutes to get this installed (would go a lot faster if I was doing it again, the instructions were just a little unclear in certain spots). I was very pleasantly surprised how well it works and how sturdy it feels holding my hardtop up. Would definitely recommend this to hardtop owners.

It is super easy to use

It makes taking off the roof a 10-minute job. The only thing I haven't figured out is how t efficiently lower the straps that hold the top when the top is not attached. Have to climb up the unit to feed the rope through the system to get it down when it is pulled tight against the garage ceiling. Again this is when it is empty and not storing the top. But removing and reattaching the roof is a simple one person job with the Harken Hoister.

      Easy Peasy

Installation was cake (about 1.5 hrs). The hard part was understanding which way my rafters were routed (the builder did a good job with the drywall). Once I knew that, it was a simple matter of pre-drilling and screwing in the eyehooks. That said, I should mention that I didn't follow the directions. I did not put up boards to screw the eyehooks into, I screwed them directly into the rafters. I did not space them apart parallel to the bottom edge, rather the top of the window. Essentially my footprint for my TJ top was 48" x 48" (using a multiple of 16" centers for the rafters). Then came time to "string it up". This took three attempts because there is SO MUCH ROPE that my little 19' long garage completely undercompensated for the excess. When installing this, be sure to loosen the bait and tackle portion out to at least 3/4 of the distance from the wall to the 4 point joint. It comes fairly retracted and the directions don't talk about this. I only have a 9' ceiling, and this worked great. I was able to jimmy it all the way up to the eyehooks. It sits about 2" above my windshield light bar, so I can pull in either way underneath it. I also made it so the driver/passenger area sits above my garage door when up. My only compliant is the lowering (repelling) feature. Even at 45 degrees plus, once it hits any resistance (like landing on the Jeep or a sawhorse), the dropping stops and the rope locks. I have to jimmy a screwdriver in the clasp to allow some slop to disconnect. Luckily I'm tall enough to reach the clasp for mine.

Excellent hoist, instructions could be better

I really like this hoist. It is simple, economical, and easy to use for one person. My only issues were from the instructions. It appears these instructions were originally universal and then modified for a Jeep top which overcomplicated things in my opinion. I think a good measurement/layout diagram for the 4 eyelets would have worked wonders. Overall very happy with the purchase.

      Works just as intended

I needed a hoist that would work in fairly cramped space. My ceiling is only 8 feet high and a small 2car garage. This did the trick with no problem. Just had to move the eye or main pull cord to the side a ways! great quality. easy but detailed installation.
