Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the BBK 62mm Throttle Body, fitting all 1991 to 2003 Wrangler with the 4 liter inline-6 engine. Today we're gonna talk about the installation of this throttle body, which is a very simple one out of three wrench install, you'll be able to get this bolted up in under an hour, and this is something that anybody can do in their driveway. We'll talk a little bit more about the install in just a second. We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of this throttle body. This is for those of you who are looking to get a little bit of additional power out of your 4.0. Now from the factory, the 4.0 is optimized, especially by the time it got to 1991 to 2003. That inline-six has been around for a long time, and if there were something to be done to get more power out of it, it would've already been done from the factory. These are not motors that were dumbed down to meet emissions specs, these were at their max performance when they came out of the factory. So if you are looking to add a throttle body onto it to get a little bit more air or for better atomization of the air and fuel to get a more clean and efficient burn to get some more power, this is going to be an option for you, but you're not going to see massive gains. It's not something you're going to feel right off the bat when you're driving, it's not something you're really going to be able to see on a dyno. It is going to be a new piece so if you have some wear or if you have a throttle body that's all gunked up and you don't wanna clean it, then this is going to be an option for you, but as far as massive power gains that you're really gonna notice, this is not going to provide them. If you've added large tires onto your Jeep recently and you're feeling like it's sluggish and that's why you're looking at this item, I would recommend going ahead and spending more money to regear the Jeep back to a factory final drive. That is the best way to get that peppy feeling back in your Jeep. And if you decide after that to go ahead and add some additional components to get some more power, then you can come back and look at this item. This throttle body is made of a 356 cast aluminum that is machined and left with its natural finish. It has a stamp steel throttle linkage. This does come with all of your gaskets that you need to get it installed, as well as hardware, and this will accept all of your factory sensors that you'll need to remove off of your factory throttle body and install onto the new one. As far as your installation goes, again, one out of three wrench install in under an hour. The first step that you'll need to take when installing this is to disconnect your air intake tube from the top of your factory throttle body. Then you'll remove the wiring harness from all of the sensors, finally remove your throttle cable and your transmission kick-down, and then remove the four bolts that hold it onto top of the intake. You can go ahead and then install your sensors into your new throttle body, place the new throttle body on top of the intake with the included gaskets and bolt it down. Reattach all of your wiring harnesses and your cables, and finally your air inlet tube. Again, very easy install, anybody can do this in their driveway with some traditional hand tools. This throttle body comes in at right around $270. And if you're looking for a performance increase, I don't think you're going to get almost $300 out of power increase out of this item. However, if you do need a new throttle body because yours is worn, gunked up and you don't wanna clean it, or some other reason, then this is going to be a nice upgrade and replacement. So if you're looking to swap out the throttle body on your four liter I6, [SP] this one from BBK is a nice option. So that's my review of the BBK 62mm Throttle Body, fitting all 1991 to 2003 Wranglers, that you can find right here at

Increase Horsepower. Boosting your Wrangler engine's horsepower by anywhere from 7 to 12 horses is easy with BBK's 62mm Throttle Body from the company's Power-Plus Series performance parts. With a big 62mm inlet, this throttle body sucks in an ample flow of cold, dense air that powers up your Jeep's 4.0L engine strongly. Besides boosting aspiration, this component is precision CNC machined out of tough, rust-proof 356 aluminum alloy that will stand up to years of hard-charging off-road adventure.

Quality Construction. The 62mm Throttle Body by BBK is a performance part made from 356 aluminum alloy, cast and then CNC machined to precise tolerances. Features include die-stamped throttle linkages, double-sealed bearings, and an O-ringed throttle shaft. Designed for high airflow, this part includes a multi-port injection (MPI) style, and is built to exceed stock strength and quality standards. Horsepower gains range from 7 to 12 HP, varying by model and application. Made in the USA, this product is covered by a 1 year limited warranty from BBK.

Application. This BBK Power Plus Series 62mm Throttle Body is specifically designed to fit the 1991-2003 Wrangler YJ and TJ models equipped with a 4.0L engine.

Just bought a poweraid throttle body spacer, would it be pointless to add a larger throttle body since the spacer is only 60 mm? Thanks in advance.

DanielJ

  • Throttle body spacers would be designed around the OEM throttle body, and would not work well with an aftermarket throttlebody such as the BBK 62mm Throttle Body.

Would this fit a 2006 LJ (non rubicon). It's a 4.0L inline - but unsure if there's a difference in engine from 2003 to 2006.

Terry

  • This BBK 62mm Throttle Body (91-03 4.0L Wrangler YJ & TJ)- would not fit the 2004-2006 Jeep TJ's or LJ's unfortunately.

WAS THIS HP INCREASE ON A DYNO AND WAS IT WITH A KN TYPE AIR INLET SYSTEM OR WILL YOU GET THE INCREASE WITH STOCK AIR INLET?

TomO

  • Hello, 7-12 HP were most likely the Dyno results. With the stock air box the reading would be closer to the 7 HP range, and with an after market system it should be closer to the 12 HP range.

Is this unit compatible with a K N cold air intake (already installed)?

MVWrangler

  • This BBK 62mm Throttle Body is compatible with most of K&N's Intakes, and we have confirmed the fitment of the K&N 57 Series FIPK Performance Cold Air Intake. If you perhaps a different intake, we would recommend measuring the coupler that connects to the throttle body, or you may give us a call, and we would be more than happy to confirm the fitment. If you have the intake listed below, this throttle body will fit for sure: http://www.extremeterrain.com/k-n-fipk-tj-5715141.html (item J12220)

    BBK 62mm Throttle Body

I had to replace the stock throttle body because it was damaged. BBK is made of very high quality material and the installation was super easy. Alone this throttle body won't give your Jeep 4.0 more power, but coupled with a CAI, 4 port fuel injectors and custom exhaust you will notice a significant increase in performance.

    must have jeep upgrade

This BBK 62mm throttle body is a very well made, quality product. Installation was simple, and includes what is needed for installation. It Does have a noticable improvement in throttle response and power, especially with a CAI and exhaust. The stock throttle body is 60mm and tapers down to 55mm after butterfly, which is restrictive, while the intake manifold has an opening of 62mm, so this BBK is a perfect match, no need to go any larger than 62mm. I definitely recommend this upgrade for any Jeep 4.0 and Extreme Terrain has the best price with fast shipping.

    Noticeable power increase.

Pretty easy to install. Make sure you line up the gasket for the adapter properly. Better throttle response with better top end and haven't noticed any change in fuel economy.

    Works well!

This product was a great fit for my wrangler! It came with everything that was needed for the install and I was able to install it in my driveway in less than 20 minutes. I am in the process of tuning up my Jeep so I can't say much for performance gain, but it definitely made replacing my old throttle body very easy! Overall it is a well made part!

    easy install, smoother running motor

The infamous "previous owner" of my Wrangler had broken off one of the mounting screws for the throttle position sensor. Attempts to address this made the issue worse, so I decided I'd just order a new throttle body. I got it quickly, it installed in about 20 minutes, the engine now runs smoother, what's not to love?

Review from BBK 62mm Throttle Body (04-06 4.0L Wrangler TJ)

    Bad fitment

I ordered this throttle body to replace the damaged factory unit, the first on I received the spring on the throttle was weak and wouldnt close the butterfly on its own. I returned it with no issue but now the second one I got when I installed the TPS it would push against the shaft and the butterfly would scrap and get stuck on the walls. Im gonna mock up alittle spacer for it but Im very disappointed.

    Nice Boost!

I installed the new throttle body with a 1" spacer and cold air intake and the results were noticeable increased throttle response and better exhaust tone. Zero rough idle - very smooth throughout the RPM range.

    its an improvement

if you have this throttle body and pair it with a 62 MM spacer it works pretty good. i went a set further and made the intake manifold hole bigger for the 62 MM throttle body and spacer. I also upgraded the injectors to 4 port injectors to better atomize the fuel to air. you don't get huge power gain but its a Jeep so you do what you can do. But you do feel more power low idle to mid range. and like a set of your pants power feel, like pushing you more in your set. if that makes sense. plus this is the cheapest one on the market.

This was one of the easiest mods that you can do. I have full power from idle to full throttle. My old one was gummed up. I would recommend this product.
