    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the BBK 62mm Throttle Body, fitting all 1991 to 2003 Wrangler with the 4 liter inline-6 engine. Today we're gonna talk about the installation of this throttle body, which is a very simple one out of three wrench install, you'll be able to get this bolted up in under an hour, and this is something that anybody can do in their driveway. We'll talk a little bit more about the install in just a second. We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of this throttle body. This is for those of you who are looking to get a little bit of additional power out of your 4.0. Now from the factory, the 4.0 is optimized, especially by the time it got to 1991 to 2003. That inline-six has been around for a long time, and if there were something to be done to get more power out of it, it would've already been done from the factory. These are not motors that were dumbed down to meet emissions specs, these were at their max performance when they came out of the factory. So if you are looking to add a throttle body onto it to get a little bit more air or for better atomization of the air and fuel to get a more clean and efficient burn to get some more power, this is going to be an option for you, but you're not going to see massive gains. It's not something you're going to feel right off the bat when you're driving, it's not something you're really going to be able to see on a dyno. It is going to be a new piece so if you have some wear or if you have a throttle body that's all gunked up and you don't wanna clean it, then this is going to be an option for you, but as far as massive power gains that you're really gonna notice, this is not going to provide them. If you've added large tires onto your Jeep recently and you're feeling like it's sluggish and that's why you're looking at this item, I would recommend going ahead and spending more money to regear the Jeep back to a factory final drive. That is the best way to get that peppy feeling back in your Jeep. And if you decide after that to go ahead and add some additional components to get some more power, then you can come back and look at this item. This throttle body is made of a 356 cast aluminum that is machined and left with its natural finish. It has a stamp steel throttle linkage. This does come with all of your gaskets that you need to get it installed, as well as hardware, and this will accept all of your factory sensors that you'll need to remove off of your factory throttle body and install onto the new one. As far as your installation goes, again, one out of three wrench install in under an hour. The first step that you'll need to take when installing this is to disconnect your air intake tube from the top of your factory throttle body. Then you'll remove the wiring harness from all of the sensors, finally remove your throttle cable and your transmission kick-down, and then remove the four bolts that hold it onto top of the intake. You can go ahead and then install your sensors into your new throttle body, place the new throttle body on top of the intake with the included gaskets and bolt it down. Reattach all of your wiring harnesses and your cables, and finally your air inlet tube. Again, very easy install, anybody can do this in their driveway with some traditional hand tools. This throttle body comes in at right around $270. And if you're looking for a performance increase, I don't think you're going to get almost $300 out of power increase out of this item. However, if you do need a new throttle body because yours is worn, gunked up and you don't wanna clean it, or some other reason, then this is going to be a nice upgrade and replacement. So if you're looking to swap out the throttle body on your four liter I6, [SP] this one from BBK is a nice option. So that's my review of the BBK 62mm Throttle Body, fitting all 1991 to 2003 Wranglers, that you can find right here at

Increase Horsepower. Boosting your Wrangler engine's horsepower by anywhere from 7 to 12 horses is easy with BBK's 62mm Throttle Body from the company's Power-Plus Series performance parts. With a big 62mm inlet, this throttle body sucks in an ample flow of cold, dense air that powers up your Jeep's 4.0L engine strongly. Besides boosting aspiration, this component is precision CNC machined out of tough, rust-proof 356 aluminum alloy that will stand up to years of hard-charging off-road adventure.

Quality Construction. The 62mm Throttle Body by BBK is a performance part made from 356 aluminum alloy, cast and then CNC machined to precise tolerances. Features include die-stamped throttle linkages, double-sealed bearings, and an O-ringed throttle shaft. Designed for high airflow, this part includes a multi-port injection (MPI) style, and is built to exceed stock strength and quality standards. Horsepower gains range from 7 to 12 HP, varying by model and application. Made in the USA, this product is covered by a 1 year limited warranty from BBK.

Application. This BBK Power Plus Series 62mm Throttle Body is specifically designed to fit the 1991-2003 Wrangler YJ and TJ models equipped with a 4.0L engine.

To follow up on question posted earlier. Q:Just bought a poweraid throttle body spacer, would it be pointless to add a larger throttle body since the spacer is only 60 mm? Thanks in advance. A: Throttle body spacers would be designed around the OEM throttle body, and would not work well with an aftermarket throttlebody such as the BBK 62mm Throttle Body. Why wouldn't the throttle body spacer work with the BBK 62MM? I understand the spacer was designed for the OEM throttle body. Is it due to the larger diameter of the throttle body causing the valve to scrap the spacer causing it to stick in the open position?

        • Due to the design of the throttle body spacer this was created with the OEM throttle body in mind and this is indeed due to the diameter of the throttle body being too large.

            What a difference!!

I'm gonna be honest here, I was pretty skeptical at first when I had read about the 4.0 body onto a 2.5 engine increasing fuel economy and horsepower. But, I'm now officially sold! This thing was super easy to install. I also bought a Hesco 1" 62mm spacer to accommodate the bigger butterfly valve on the new throttle body. Boy oh boy do I see an improvement. I really couldn't be happier with this product and will recommend this to all my 4 banger buddies out there!

            97 TJ

I purchased the throttle body and the airaid spacer, along with a cold air intake. The Throttle body was great, everything swapped over from the original. Only issue was i could not get a 10mm socket on the back left bolt. I has to shave down a socket so it would fit. Also with the added spacer they supplied some "bolts" that are longer so you can mount the throttle body down through the spacer and thread into the intake. This i also had a small issue, trying to fish the bolt down through 2 gaskets and spacer and not cross threading the intake, well the bolts supplied to me are not long enough, i was only catching the fist 4-5 threads on the bolt and ended up stripping out the first few threads in my intake. So i tossed the bolts and went to my local hardware store and purchased all-thread I believe 4mm with lock washers and nuts. I cut the all-thread and made studs to fully hand thread down into the intake and have great penetration with the thread. Also made it easier to slide down a gasket then spacer, slide down a gasket, then throttle body. Other than a few install snags i still give 5 stars cause everything works the way it should and Jeep performance is up a bit, Still on the 1st tank of gas so curious to see if i pick up gas miles.

            Great throttle body

This is a great improvement over the stock throttle body. I've noticed better seat of the pants performance and response. I'm also getting better gas mileage, because the old unit had a bad leak. I'm completely satisfied with this part.

Review from BBK 62mm Throttle Body (04-06 4.0L Jeep Wrangler TJ)

            Love It

Once I got this lil guy installed right I loved how much more smooth the throttle is. Some people mention the flap sticking and adding a spacer, I had to do that too and it didn't go so well. I took the spacer off and installed it again, once it was properly mounted to the intake it opened and closed just fine. I've done about 1k miles (06 LJ w/30k miles, 1k is a lot for me) and I love it. I can't really describe the difference too well because I did the Banks intake, headers, muffler and Magnaflow down pipe all at once. The complete package was so worth it and I wouldn't hesitate to do it all again, my Rubi is so much more fun to drive now.

Working good. Although the bolts that they sent I could not use because I have a throttle body spacer and you cannot use a hex head on that throttle body if you try to you will either have to shave some of the throttle body off so the hex head will fit or go get some longer Allen bolts also had to shave shaft for TPS sensor if you don't the throttle will stick.

            Bad fitment

I ordered this throttle body to replace the damaged factory unit, the first on I received the spring on the throttle was weak and wouldnt close the butterfly on its own. I returned it with no issue but now the second one I got when I installed the TPS it would push against the shaft and the butterfly would scrap and get stuck on the walls. Im gonna mock up alittle spacer for it but Im very disappointed.

            its an improvement

if you have this throttle body and pair it with a 62 MM spacer it works pretty good. i went a set further and made the intake manifold hole bigger for the 62 MM throttle body and spacer. I also upgraded the injectors to 4 port injectors to better atomize the fuel to air. you don't get huge power gain but its a Jeep so you do what you can do. But you do feel more power low idle to mid range. and like a set of your pants power feel, like pushing you more in your set. if that makes sense. plus this is the cheapest one on the market.
