    Review & Install Video

This Barricade roof rack is for those you that have a 1987 to 1995 YJ that are looking to add some additional storage space. Of course you know, your YJ is very small on the inside and if you're looking to carry some larger items or you're looking to add a roof rack basket, or even something really big like a kayak, a roof rack is a great way to do that. This roof rack from Barricade is going to be a little bit less expensive than some of the others out there, but is still going to be very functional and absolutely do everything you need it to do. This roof rack is going to install pretty easily onto your Jeep, definitely gonna be a one out of three wrench installation. Maybe a little closer to two hours because there are quite a few different pieces to put together, but it is still very straightforward and very easy to install. Now there are gonna be other roof racks out there that are going to be a little bit more expensive, and some of those are going to be maybe a little bit sleeker looking, follow the lines of the Jeep a little bit nicer, they're also going to have some more accessories that you can purchase that will bolt right onto that roof rack. So if that's what you're looking for and you have a higher budget, those options are out there. But like I said, this is going to save you some money versus some of those other ones and it's still absolutely going to get the job done. This roof rack is made of two-inch, .12-inch wall thickness steel, it's covered in a textured black powder-coat finish, everything is designed to slip-fit right together so you don't have to drill anything in this installation. It will be a completely bolt-on install. This is going to attach to your windshield hinges up front as well as your door hinges, and in the back it's going to bolt directly onto the frame using those bumper bolts, so again no drilling. Very, very simple bolt-on install. So to get this installed the first step is going to be removing the Torx bolts that hold your windshield hinge together. That's going to allow you to mount this upper section of your front bar, and then of course you're also going to have to remove the Torx bolts that are holding the hinge of your door. That will allow you to mount these two plates onto the Jeep. You're going to do that on both sides. Then you can work from the front to the back attaching the side bars. Finally working your way down to the area here where you're going to bolt this lower bar onto your frame. That is going to use those bumper bolts to get attached. There are a couple of spacers here so if you do have a body lift on your Jeep you can add those spacers in. And finally, you're going to attach your crossbars with the large thumbs screws. Now those crossbars can always be removed and reattached so that you can get your top up and down very easily without having to remove the entire top. So like I said before, one out of three wrench installation, probably around two hours to get it done. This roof rack's going to run you right around $300 which I do think is going to be a pretty decent price for what you're getting. Like I said before, there are roof racks out there that are more expensive, they have additional features, look a little bit sleeker, have more bolt-on accessories. This is going to be a little bit of a simpler rack but it's still gonna get the job done and for $300, I think it is a fair price. So if you're looking for a simple and easy to install roof rack for your YJ, I definitely recommend taking a look at this option from Barricade and you can find it right here at extremeterrain.com.

Will this be able to hold a roof tent? I see the weight capacity is 350 pounds but is that just while its moving?

        • This roof rack would accommodate a roof tent.

It says not made for factory rear bumper. I am not sure my rear bumper is factory as i bought it used. It has what looks like a small channel iron bumper. does the rear turn and bolt to the frame?

        • The Barricade Roof Rack does bolt into the frame, so it will not be compatible with any rear bumpers that wrap around the side of the Jeep.

What roof basket would fit this?

        • The Barricade Roof Rack would accept the Barricade X-Tray Roof Rack Basket found here: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-xtray-roof-rack-basket-8717.html. Other aftermarket baskets may work as well.

One main piece was a bit tweaked and pulling on the body when attached. Had to try to line back up. It also gets noisy when we get up to 50-55 miles an hour. Wondering if it is only meant to be on a hard top...

            Looks sweet

Just put this on my tj, finished up tonight. It was a pain to install by myself, would’ve been a breeze with two people. Didn’t help that one of my door hinge screws stripped out. Directions really sucked. I figured out which bolts went where by trial and error, and for some reason I have left over hardware. Dunno where it could possibly go unless I started drilling extra holes. Did have to “enlarge” the holes where it mounts to the factory bumper mounts, no big deal. Seems very solid, time will tell.

Little painful install but great product.

I have no complaints for this product other than the fact that the instructions were very vague and not very helpful. My product was for my 87 YJ, and the instructions only had pictures for a TJ owners reference. Other than that the product is great, having a body lift makes this install a little harder to line up the tubing.

The Rack is really nice heavy duty good for putting kayaks and canoes on top. Makes the wind a little louder but great for hanging on when mudding. Looks good with the tube bumpers.

            Nice, Sturdy, Love it!

Got the product in 3 days and packaged well. Biggest issue was getting windshield and door torx nuts out. ('92 YJ) Use HEAT! Worked like a charm. Of course I found that out after trying everything else. LOL Install was easy even did it alone. Very sturdy and no rattle. All I need now is my RTT! Not 5 cause haven't had it long.

            Barricade roof rack

The good, I’m pleased with the look and construction of the rack, The bad, The hardware is sub par and one of the three cross bars doesn’t sit flat on the tubing, I had to re-shape it to fit flat, The powder coating is not good. I’m sure I’ll be re-painting it in the near future.

Light fab work required - 94 YJ

Step one: Throw the box of hardware in the trash. I used them to mock everything up and then replaced with proper hardware. The box was missing all sorts of nuts, and the included allen didn't fit the heads anyway. This is the reason I dropped it one star. As others have stated, be prepared to spend some time wrestling this on. It did not require welding or anything, just some patience and the full four hours others mentioned. Take your time with the door hinges, and be sure to have a friend with you for the interior block that holds the hinge bolts. We had to drill out one of the stock torx bolts because I stripped it out, but that was only a five minute setback. The rear supports are a bear to get around the body mounts, even with an aftermarket bumper. Not a lot of space there, and I ended up grinding a bit of the bushing off and twisting it to allow my socket to get the the bumper bolt. DO NOT EXPECT A DIRECT BOLT ON INSTALLATION. Its a Jeep... Enjoy your time installing this and don't be discouraged. (some cussing is allowable) Also, take the advice of others and add clean wraps of Gorilla tape to the male end of the slip joints. One wrap at a time until it's nice and snug. This thing has zero rattles if you take the time to do it right. Super solid. Beefy. Great look to the texture. Worth almost every dime - again, the hardware is garbage. Pony up and spend as much as you want on good bolt with your choice of heads. I fit a rack from RockyMounts and threw the spare up top. Needed to relocate to allow for my new Ice Anchor cooler rack for the tailgate...

            Great product

Perfect for long trips. One bolt came bent and they fixed it in 2 days. Hreat product and not to heavy but strong. Real easy to put on unless you have an old jeep and every bolt strips when you try to get it out. Ya'll know.

            Quality material

I have a pretty mixed review on this, It is sturdy, it looks good, install was 50/50. Had the drivers side upright been straight, and the holes in cross been drilled right, install would have been a breeze. I had to redrill the bars the run the length of the jeep, they were 90 degrees out, and had to modify my drivers side door hinge to get the door back to square. it was a quality control issue i believe. one of the cross member i had to bend down and hammer it to shape of the pipe. the spacers for the body lift are about 1/16" too short, so all of the weight is sitting on the bolt, not the pipe. The plastic bolt caps on the cross members are junk, the laquor finish on the hardware is too thick to use the proper sized allen heads. you do have to remove the dash on a YJ to get to the windshield mount nuts, which mine were coated with spray on insulation, not barricades fault, but just an FYI. I also had to cut down my bumper a little bit, again not barricades issue. all in all I would suggest this rack to someone with a good mechanical knowledge, it looks good, and appears to be very stout. My install time, with fabrications was 5 hours or so, if you don't have a top on, and are more familiar with jeep than i am, a 3 hour estimate would be appropriate even with modifications.

            Installation Instructions Suck!

The rack works, but it's obvious that is poorly manufactured and quality control is subpar. Although the rack fit my '94 Wrangler, I had to bend several supports for them to fit on the Jeep. The biggest problem is that the instructions were terrible and did not indicate that the windshield would have to be dropped and the dash removed to get the mounting bolts through the rack and securely fastened to the body.

            August 10, 2018

            Good quality rack-nightmare installation.

1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ front windshield hex screws were next to impossible to take out prior to front rack bracket assembly install. Had to take to a professional to extract them and finish complete rack install. The hex screws had some kind of nut or attachment on the back which prevented the removal from the front so shop had to remove dash assembly to get to them? All led to a 6 hour labor charge at $130 per hour to fully complete the rack install. This turned a $229. Rack into a $1000.00 rack!!! Would not do this again.

            Million

Ok it is simple to install but if u have a hard top on it’s a chore. U have to loosen the hard top in order to drop windshield then u have to pull off your dash to get to nuts behind windshield hinge bolts. There’s a million screws to remove.

The unit is solid and seems well made. After tightening all hardware as the last step of the install, the rack feels very solid and secure. It looks aggressive and has no issues with my kayaks. My adult son and I completed the install in about 4.5 hours. We did run into some problems with removing a few of the original star pattern head screws on the windshield. Even with using a penetrating oil a few days prior to removal, two were most stubborn. The star shape just stripped when force was applied so we needed to drill them out. Without problems, I believe this would have been a 2.5 hour intall.

The installation wasn't as bad as I had prepared for from some of the reviews. Pretty easy to get done and took a little longer than an hour for just myself. Like the way it looks on the jeep and serves it's purpose for hauling our kayaks and whatever else needed.
