    Review & Install Video

This Barricade roof rack is for those you that have a 1987 to 1995 YJ that are looking to add some additional storage space. Of course you know, your YJ is very small on the inside and if you're looking to carry some larger items or you're looking to add a roof rack basket, or even something really big like a kayak, a roof rack is a great way to do that. This roof rack from Barricade is going to be a little bit less expensive than some of the others out there, but is still going to be very functional and absolutely do everything you need it to do. This roof rack is going to install pretty easily onto your Jeep, definitely gonna be a one out of three wrench installation. Maybe a little closer to two hours because there are quite a few different pieces to put together, but it is still very straightforward and very easy to install. Now there are gonna be other roof racks out there that are going to be a little bit more expensive, and some of those are going to be maybe a little bit sleeker looking, follow the lines of the Jeep a little bit nicer, they're also going to have some more accessories that you can purchase that will bolt right onto that roof rack. So if that's what you're looking for and you have a higher budget, those options are out there. But like I said, this is going to save you some money versus some of those other ones and it's still absolutely going to get the job done. This roof rack is made of two-inch, .12-inch wall thickness steel, it's covered in a textured black powder-coat finish, everything is designed to slip-fit right together so you don't have to drill anything in this installation. It will be a completely bolt-on install. This is going to attach to your windshield hinges up front as well as your door hinges, and in the back it's going to bolt directly onto the frame using those bumper bolts, so again no drilling. Very, very simple bolt-on install. So to get this installed the first step is going to be removing the Torx bolts that hold your windshield hinge together. That's going to allow you to mount this upper section of your front bar, and then of course you're also going to have to remove the Torx bolts that are holding the hinge of your door. That will allow you to mount these two plates onto the Jeep. You're going to do that on both sides. Then you can work from the front to the back attaching the side bars. Finally working your way down to the area here where you're going to bolt this lower bar onto your frame. That is going to use those bumper bolts to get attached. There are a couple of spacers here so if you do have a body lift on your Jeep you can add those spacers in. And finally, you're going to attach your crossbars with the large thumbs screws. Now those crossbars can always be removed and reattached so that you can get your top up and down very easily without having to remove the entire top. So like I said before, one out of three wrench installation, probably around two hours to get it done. This roof rack's going to run you right around $300 which I do think is going to be a pretty decent price for what you're getting. Like I said before, there are roof racks out there that are more expensive, they have additional features, look a little bit sleeker, have more bolt-on accessories. This is going to be a little bit of a simpler rack but it's still gonna get the job done and for $300, I think it is a fair price. So if you're looking for a simple and easy to install roof rack for your YJ, I definitely recommend taking a look at this option from Barricade and you can find it right here at extremeterrain.com.

I doesn't look like this mounts to the windshield at all? Would it still be possible to fold down the windshield with this system? Also, still wondering about my first question... What is the height off a factory hardtop? I have an 87 YJ. I would like to know if I could still fit in the garage. ?? Thanks!

    TruettS

    • The Barricade Roof Rack will allow clearance to fold the windshield down, however installed light bars may effect this ability. This will raise roof clearance height on a hard top model by approximately 8" with the cross bars installed.

Really nice rack for the money.

It took a lot of work to install this rack if your not willing to drill holes into your jeep. I have a 1989 YJ and the problem was that windshield bracket bolts that you have to remove have a nut on the backside that is not possible to get to without taking the whole dashboard out. Instead of doing that I just drilled holes right into the windshield brackets and tapped them so the supplied bolts worked. It ended up taking me about 4 hours. If I had to remove the windshield brackets and the whole dashboard it probably would have taken more than a day.

      Dash Removal Required

Had to pull the dash off to get to the nuts of the windshield hinge bolts, that took about 80 of the install time. Fits well, feels solid.

Excellent rack!!! Installed on an 89 YJ with no issues. Took 3 and a half hours by myself. Shipping was super quick! Very sturdy rack that'll be great for hauling camping gear and an awning. Completely changes the look of my jeep, I'm a very happy jeeper. Came with instructions too!

      Looks great

Adds a much needed place to carry my kayaks and snowboard. Gives a great overall look without impeding the ability to pit the to up and down. It does make some noise driving down the road(wind) but I added a fairing with a little customizing to fit. Makes it look even better. Added bonus, can put my satellite radio antenna on top for better reception.

      Sweet rack!

Awesome rack, obviously bolts are not easy but I got a manual impact driver for the t40 Torx bolts and got most of them out, drilled and retapped the others. The quality of the rack is excellent, I have a hard tip and don't notice the wind noise that I've heard other Jeep owners talk about, already got some kayak carriers on the rack and it's awesome!

      Great upgrade for my yj!

Have to agree with some of the reviews regarding the knobs on the cross bars. I was very careful and used the hex tool to tighten. Besides the issue with having to deal with the dashboard removal the install went smooth. You do need 2 people for 5 of the install. Looks great!

Don't waste your time and money.

I was fairly excited about this roof rack. The price seemed right, the larger diameter tubing seemed sturdy, and the hardware looked all right. Installation requires folding the windshield down and removing the dash. This is fairly easy but is an added pain if you run a hard top. Getting everything aligned took a fair bit of time. The rubber seals to go between the front brackets and your Jeep are made for a TJ and will not work on a YJ. I'm not sure why they even bothered to include them. Once installed it looks great. Unfortunately, the hardware and mounting are garbage. No matter how much I torque the bolts down, no matter how much loctite I use, every single bolt works its way loose. The rear mounts at the bumper are the worst. The vertical sections at the back smack into the hard top constantly. The tubular sections are connected only by a single nut and bolt passing through the tube's diameter. They come loose frequently as well. The plastic knobs for securing the crossbars strip out immediately. The three crossbars provided are all slightly different lengths, getting them secured takes quite a bit of finagling and looks cheap. I'm realizing that overhead cargo racks aren't the best choice for my Wrangler. If you must have one, spend a little more to get something higher quality.

      Huge disappointment......

This item is a huge disappointment. I purchased it approximately one year ago-had to leave town and didn't have it installed until a couple weeks ago. After that much time of course it was too late to remedy it's shortcomings. I had it professionally installed. The problems: 1) The tabs on the front where it attaches to the body up front were welded at the wrong angles-had to be cut and re-welded. 2) There are two holes in the top rail on each side, near the front of the rack with no use-looks terrible with those holes. 3) The knobs provided for the cross rails do not fit the nuts provided so are useless. 4) One of the bolts provided for the cross rails are shorter than all the others so that looks terrible. Would I recommend? No. The finish is great and it seems sturdy enough but it looks like a mess with the cut/rewelds, lack of knobs and uneven bolts and extra, useless holes. Considering removing it just so I don't have to look at it.

      Great rack for the money

When the box arrived it was pretty banged up but they do a great job of packing it, so everything was in great shape and there. installation instructions are ok, give you just enough detail. hardest part of the install has nothing to do with rack and everything to do with the Jeep! the torx bolts on the front of the windshield frame are difficult because the nuts on the back are extremely difficult to reach. if you are not going to remove the dash, its easier to drill them out. The rest of the install was fairly simple. Very pleased with results. keep in mind the location of accessories and if they will still work. I will be replacing my old KC lights with some new smaller square leds for clearance.

      Roof rack

I like it. Nice and solid. I put my kayak and inflatable boat on it and it works great. The wide platform gives you a lot of space to put your goodies on. I try to leave the crossbars on for added strength. It handles the weight of my toys just fine. I can even slip my cab cover over my soft top and don't have to remove a thing.

      Love this roof rack

It seemed to take forever. Having to take the dash apart was a pain. The fitting was close, not the racks fault. I'm sure its the 20 years of abuse my YJ has had on it. I made it fit just fine and it is excellent for my paddle boards.

Have not got to use it yet as this is my tow vehicle for my motor home heading to Florida and have a big dog riding in the jeep so I needed room for other thing . I do like the looks of it and it is very well built . I put rack on it and got a whole lot of wind noise (oh well) worth it.

      Great Buy for the money

This is a pretty solid roof rack - It will take some finagling to install - for the upper door hinge brackets you will have to pull your whole dash out to get at the nuts on the hex screws, but really more of a pain in the butt than anything else. This rack fit PERFECT on my 93 yj. Word of advice DONT TIGHTEN the top screws until cross bars are installed and secured. I would def recommend this rack. And btw it looks SUPER GOOD on the jeep!

      Roof rack

Installed this by myself which was a pain. Had to partially remove the dash to get to the hinge bolt nuts. I also had to use some ratched straps to pull stuff into alignment even with all fasteners loose. However in the end it looks great especially for the price.

      Great Product

Does exactly what I wanted it to do. Minor squeaks with nothing but the standard hardware. the 3 middle sections are different lengths and i cant seem to ever get them to line up right. So i've just been using 2. Even with that it still supports my weight and a roof basket without bowing. Finish isnt the greatest and has already scratched up a bit. and the part that bolts behind the bumper has no drain holes and fills up with water. So while you have the tools out i would advise poping a hole in the bottom. Unless you need to carry an extra half gallon on each side.
