Like any new technology, disc brakes had to prove that they were better than their predecessor. Compared to the earlier drum brakes, the disc version offered better stopping performance because they dissipate heat better. As a result, the discs were less likely to suffer from brake fade, which occurs when brake components overheat. This goes double under extreme usage, such riding downhill on unpaved terrain where repeated hard stops are unavoidable. Of course, like any automotive part or component, disc brakes will eventually wear out.
