      Video Review & Installation

Even those of you with the four-door JK might be looking for a little bit more cargo space. Whether you're hauling gear to the campsite for the weekend or just around town, adding a roof rack can add the ability to carry a lot more cargo than you can squeeze even into the larger four-door JK. Today we're gonna talk through the installation of this roof rack kit, which I am going to give a three out of three wrenches. This does require you to drill a few different holes directly through your fiberglass hardtop, which is not for the faint of heart. That is something that you're gonna wanna get right the first time, and a lot of you are not gonna feel comfortable doing. So it's okay to take your Jeep to a shop to have this installed. Now, having a lot of weight up on your roof rack isn't gonna be a good idea for those of you who do more hardcore wheeling and get yourself in a lot of off camper situations. All that weight up top will certainly raise your center of gravity. However, if you do more of an overland style wheeling, or again you stay on the street, a roof rack's a great way to carry some additional gear. But a lot of you don't like the more traditional roof rack that attaches to the windshield hinges up front and the frame in the back, and it's this sort of exoskeleton roof rack look. Even the ones from Garven and some of the highest quality companies, they still have a bit of a bulky look, in my opinion. So if you're looking for something that's a little bit sleeker, a little bit smaller, but still has a good weight capacity, this is going to be an excellent option for you. This is something that almost disappears onto the hardtop. You don't really see it when it's up there, especially on a lifted Jeep. This adds very little height to your Jeep, just over 2 inches, but it provides 250 pounds of dynamic weight capacity onto the roof, because this will bolt directly through your hardtop and down onto the support cage. That's where all the strength comes from. There are other racks like this that just attach to the rain gutters on your hardtop, but you can't put a lot of weight on those because of course your top is a fiberglass-like material. So this being that it drills through your hardtop, bolts directly under the support cage, gives you a ton of strength while still being really low-profile.Now, this is going to be an expensive rack, especially when you compare it to some of those roof racks that are more traditional. Like we said before, you can get those for a few hundred dollars less than you can get this rack for. And this rack is really just giving you these two crossbars. So some of you guys might be thinking, "It seems like a lotta money for what you get," but all the benefits that I talked about before come with this. And you can get a flooring kit for this. With the other kits, they might be a little less expensive, but they are a lot more bulky. So it comes down to what you value, what your budget is, and what you're looking to use your roof rack for. Like I said before, the big thing that makes this rack different from the other ones on the market is the fact that is so low profile. This only adds two and three-eights inches of height to your Jeep, but it's still very, very strong. This will be able to carry 850 pounds static, 250 pounds dynamic, and the whole thing only weighs in at 25 pounds, which is a huge weight to carrying capacity ratio. Now, this is so lightweight because it is made of an extruded aluminum. It is covered in a UV resistant anodizing, and it is available in both the silver you see here, and the black. You're brackets that bolt directly on your support cage are steel and black powder coated. And the brackets that go up on top of the roof rack are of plastic material, so you're not gonna have to worry about any rusting down the line. As I said before, you can get a floor slat kit for this setup. It also has T-slots built right into it, so that you can attach bungee cord straps, netting, whatever you need to keep all of your gear exactly where you put it. And you can also purchase a lot of accessories from a lot of big name brands that will allow you to carry a canoe, or a bike, or a lot of other things right up on your roof rack very comfortably. As I said before, I am gonna give this a three out of three wrenches for installation. You are going to have to drill a couple of holes in your hardtop, as well as cut a few slits in your roll bar padding. And of course your hardtop is a big, heavy, expensive piece that you're not going to wanna mess up. Now TeraFlex does include full-sized templates along with this kit to make marking and drilling those holes a little bit easier. But again, this is going to be a fairly involved install that a lot of you guys are not going to wanna tackle on your own. If you do decide to tackle this, the first step is removing your hardtop. From there you're going to be attaching these brackets onto the support cage, and making those cuts into your support cage padding. Of course, if you're getting ready to drill holes in your hardtop, cutting a couple of slits in your roll cage padding isn't going to be a big deal for you. Once you have these brackets installed, that's when you'll lay out your templates on your top. Drill through the top, and install the crossbars themselves, and finally reinstall the top with the crossbars in place. Now as far as tools, you're going to need your traditional hand tools. TeraFlex does include a couple of specialty tools along with this kit to help you get it installed. And you're also going to need some drill bits, and TeraFlex does recommend a very specific type of Brad-tip drill bit, because it helps when drilling through the fiberglass to eliminate chipping as much as possible. All in all, as far as time goes, I would give yourself probably around four hours to get this done. You are gonna wanna measure not once or twice, but probably three times before drilling those holes to make sure you get everything right. So this install will be a little bit lengthy. So if you're looking to add a little bit of extra cargo carrying capacity to your four-door JK with a hardtop, but you're not interested in a more bulky full roof rack cage, this is going to be really low-profile sleek option as long as you have the budget for it. So that's my review of the TeraFlex Nebo Roof Rack Main Rail Kit, fitting all 2011 JKs, that you can find right here on extremeterrain.com.
