    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Superchips TrailDash2, fitting your 2003 to 2006 TJ. Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of this TrailDash, which is a very simple one out of three wrench process. You're really just getting it plugged in and getting it mounted onto the dash. It isn't really too much of an install to speak of. The whole thing will take you less than half an hour, but we'll talk more about that in just a second. We're also going to talk about the construction and a few of the features of this unit. If you're interested in getting a little bit more power out of your TJ, a tune is one way to do that. Now, if you've installed larger tires on your Jeep and you haven't regeared it, I would always recommend regearing first. That is going to be the absolute best way to get that happy feeling back in your Jeep by getting back closer to your factory final drive ratio. However, if you've already regeared and you're still looking for a little bit more power, a tune is a way to do that. Now, the 40 is definitely optimized right out of the factory, so I wouldn't expect to see a night and day difference, but if you're comfortable running a higher octane fuel, then a tune is a way to squeeze a little bit more power, a little bit more throttle response, and some more torque out of your Jeep. Now, this unit here is gonna be for those of you who are looking to get that tune but also want to monitor your Jeep. Unlike some other tuners or say the Superchips Flashpaq, which is also available for your TJ, this is designed to be plugged into your OBD II port, get that tune loaded into ECU, but keep this on your dash so that you can have virtual gauges and really monitor what's going on in your TJ. The Flashpaq, you plug it in, you flash the tune onto the ECU, and you put it in the glove box. Again, this stays there, gives you those virtual gauges, and gives you a little bit more insight into what's going on with your TJ, which is a nice thing. Especially if you've tuned the engine, you're making it work a little bit harder, you wanna be able to keep an eye on things and make sure you're not gonna hurt anything. The TrailDash is going to give you a five-inch full color touchscreen, which is going to give you access to all of the menus that you'll go through in order to get the two loaded on your Jeep and to select which gauges you're seeing at any given point. Now, because this is designed to work on an older vehicle, this is for those '03 to '06 TJs, this isn't going to have all of the bells and whistles, all of the additional features that the same unit would have for a newer Jeep. There are a lot of things that the newer JKs do that the TJs don't do out of the factory, and they just don't have the capability of doing. So, this is going to give you those tunes. Again, you're going to wanna run a higher octane fuel, but you can get a little bit more power out of your Jeep, and it's gonna give you those digital gauges, but it's not going to give you a ton of adjustment over a lot of other features, because those features just don't exist on the TJ. So, if you are interested in having those digital gauges to be able to see what's going on in your Jeep, I think that this is gonna be a nice option for you. If you really just wanna get the tune and not have those digital gauges, the Superchips Flashpaq is going to be a better option. As I said before, there really isn't too much of an install to do with this. All you're really doing is plugging into your OBD II port, pulling your cable up behind the dashboard to keep things nice and neat, plugging this unit in, there's just one wire with the HDMI cable, and using the included mount to get it attached onto the dashboard, where you can see it and reach it, but it's not going to be in the way. From there, you'll go through your menus, flash your tune on to your ECU, and then go back to a screen where you can see those digital g

How weatherproof is this product? I like to leave my doors off and windows out for, at the very least, 6 months out of the year and that could end up being quite a bit of rain coming into the jeep, so I'm just trying to figure out if it would be fine or if I should just go with the Flashpaq F5.

    ShawnM

    • Hello, we would not advise leaving this in the open and having the possibility of catching rain on it, that could cause a malfunction.

I have 2 JK's, a 2010 JK and a 2011 JKU. Can I use this on both Jeeps by plugging it and taking it out of each Jeep, or is the Superchips unit dedicated to only one vehicle install once it is plugged in? Thanks for your response.

    Blueknight7777

    • The Superchips TrailDash2 would be designed for use on one vehicle. It can be transferred, but will require unmarrying it from the current Jeep by returning it to the stock tune. Superchips can provide more info on the number of times this can be performed.

Easy to set up and the mods are easy to understand. I've used the 91 octane, 87 octane (rural trip with a one pump gas station) as well as the tow mode. My gas mileage increase a few miles per gallon and I noticed a performance difference when I also added the RedRock Cold Air Intake kit. (2011 JK). It was difficult to update using the on line option. Didn't work with my Mac and my Surface Pro wouldn't allow access due to the virus protection.

So i bought the Superchip Trail dash 2. The 87 octane tune should be the factory jeep set up, its like a V8. The 93 tune is awesome. Have not had time to try the tow tune, still having traction control problems. Just found information to turn it off.

Review from Superchips TrailDash2 (12-14 Wrangler JK)

      Does what it says

I installed this TD2 in my 2014 Polar Edition JKU. Hardware installation took about 15 minutes, loading and saving tunes took about 30 minutes. The reason I purchased the TD2 is that I put a 2.5" lift with 35" Toyo AT2's with 3.21 gears so it was sluggish and the transmission hunted a little for the right gear. After programming in the 87 Octane Performance tune the jeep was noticeably quicker and shifts much better. The jeep is now almost as quick as with the stock tires, with shorter gears it would easily break the tires loose. Very happy with the tune. The touch screen isn't very sensitive and when swiping to the next screen some times it goes into a different menu instead so that could be improved. I bought a cheap rear view camera from Amazon and it works with the TD2, but sometimes the camera automatically turns on when in reverse and some times I need to go into the sub menus and back out before it turns on. That's a little annoying. I've heard Superchips can fix this with a new software flash, I just haven't done it yet. Also the check engine light came on right after installing the tune, but turned back off after a couple miles of driving. I set my fog lights to daytime running lights so now when I shift into drive they come on at 50 power. Overall I'm happy with the TD2 but there are a couple things they could improve to make it perfect.

      It's great would get again.

It's a useful tool. You can see a lot about your rig. I really can't say about the fuel programs. To much, but the performance 81 octane is really cool. At first I wasn't to impressed. But on the third day I really like it. I would buy again to help me with the trails. I looked at the touch screen switches. I personally would not use them. They are very costly. And for that much money for the additional touch switchs. I would rather just get a spod for my rig. The touch screen is a little slow. And sometimes the trail dash freezes. It does take a little time to load on start up. But if you can get passed that it's a great buy.

This is a must have item!

when I first received the device, the tunes were not there and I had an error message. I called superchips tech support and they were great at figuring out the problem and setting up a update for my device. After the update, it worked perfectly and has ever since. Quick to change the tune based on what I am doing and I loved the "crawl" tune off road. Also tried the fuel economy tune on a long trip and averaged 22mpg hwy in a lifted Jeep with 35in tires and 3.73 gear ratio. The performance tunes are great too and the adjusted shift points and throttle response are spot on. Best yet, I can monitor my gauges on and off road since my Jeep only came with basic gauges. I love this device!

Get with dash pod. Looks good. Cheapest horsepower out there plus a complete diagnostic tool and more. Looks like electronic gauges. Can tell tilt in all directions for extreme off road. Still learning all the possibilities. And the gas mileage gains are helpful too!!!

      Jeep Tows an Airstream

I purchased the TD2 hoping it would improve my gas mileage, horsepower and also use the towing mod for pulling a 16' Airstream Bambi Sport with my Jeep Rubicon JK. SUCCESS! The Jeep performs MUCH better over all. When towing it more easily reaches 65-70 mph on the highway. Gas mileage went from 8 mpg when towing to about 14 mpg. Highway with no trailer I am able to get 17-20 mpg. I also added a cold air intake which improved performance as well. I did have trouble downloading updates through my Macbook Air or Surface Pro but the tuner seems to work just fine.

      What a difference!

This helped quite a bit with my performance and throttle response. Super easy to install. I bought for the towing setup and noticed a big difference in shifting points and it won't "wind out" in the hills anymore. The 87 octane tune works great and I seem to be consuming less fuel. A little pricy, but worth it.
