    Review & Install Video

Little mods are often the most noticeable when you're paying attention to detail, and these grille inserts by RedRock 4x4 are a perfect example of that. These billet inserts will be the most affordable way to give your grill of your '97 to '06 TJ a more completed look without picking up a completed overlay. And they do a lot of justice for the front end by giving it a subtle blacked out look. With the added style, you're also getting added function, too. By adding these inserts, you'll have some additional protection so that debris won't be able to get into your radiator, a nice little bonus when you're off road. This is an easy, no-drill install. So I have to get this one a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and I'll get into that in just a moment. These seven-slot grille inserts are pretty well made, considering they're made from a billet aluminum. This is a lot better than an extruded aluminum since the billet is solid and it'll last a lot longer than extruded metal. On the outside, they have a black powder coat finish to protect the inserts from any unwanted corrosion, and it also makes them look more tough, complementing that blacked out look that I talked about. We also offer this in a polished finish as well. So if you were looking for more of a classic chrome look, we have you covered. Each insert comes with two metal brackets for each slot to hold the inserts in place. What I like about that is that the inserts only sit in the inside and behind the slot itself and they don't border the grille slots like some other options do. I think this design is still very noticeable but it's a more subdued look and not over-the-top. If you were looking for a more noticeable grille insert that surrounded each slot with a border that also still has the inner fins, I would recommend checking out the rugged ridge aluminum grille insert kit. Like I said, right now, this is the most affordable option if you were looking for a grille insert that covers the whole slot at around $75. Now, there are a couple other options for grille inserts and overlays on the page to spice up your front end. There are options that are less expensive but they simply outline the seven slots instead of putting a thin protector inside to fill it. There is only one other option by T-Rex that is the same billet insert design. These are gonna jump up about $170 from the RedRock inserts because of the very high quality of the item. Quality here is still carried by the RedRock inserts. So if you don't need the highest quality insert and you're looking for a very affordable way to brighten up your grille, this option will be the best. This is a no-drill, completely bolt-on install, like I said before, making this a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. You're gonna need a couple of hand tools and about a half hour worth of your time to get everything installed. I recommend loosely installing the hardware while the inserts are off of the Jeep. Then starting at one side of the grille, tighten the lower hardware assembly and put the bottom of the insert in the grille first, pushing in the top. Then you can reach through the grille opening to flip the mounting tab over the factory grille and tighten it down with the Philips head screwdriver and a seven-millimeter socket or seven-millimeter wrench. I would recommend doing all six inserts on the outside and saving the center grille opening for last for the best accessibility. For the last grille insert, tighten the lower hardware, place it into the grille opening, and reach through the hole in the radiator support to flip the mounting tab into position. Then you can tighten everything down to complete the install. So if you're looking for a small but noticeable upgrade to the front of your TJ, these billet inserts by RedRock 4x4 are a great option for you. This is Meredith with XT, and you can find this and everything else Wrangler right here at extremeterrain.com.

The one question about hood latch release operation is a good question as ALL photos, both catalog and customer do not show an opening for using said hood release. So, how is the operation of the hood release performed if there is no apparent access?

        • The hood latch release is accessed between the hood and grille assemblies.

I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a polished SS grille cover. Will the inserts fit inside the grille cover? I tried the snap in type and they do not fit as the grille cover makes the opening slightly smaller.

        • The RedRock 4x4 Black Billet Grille Inserts can install with some grille covers as long as the grille cover does not go too far into the grille openings.

Not a very good fit ....

These look fairly nice but installing them exactly as the insert suggested, these grille's do not fit snugly and will rattle around. Installation was easier than expected but the inserts are just not a good fit at all. If I had it to do over, I would NOT buy these.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Billet Grille Inserts - Polished (97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ)

            Don't fit

Thought these would look good. Got them and was pumped to put them on. Tightened the first one and it fell out. Screws as far as they could go and the things just fall out. Get the snap in ones, these might fly threw the radiator at 60 mph.

            Grill inserts

These actually look great if you ever get them installed. They also provide a little more protection for the a/c condenser against rocks and road trash that we invariably run into. Installation required the back clips to be bent to almost 90 degrees so they would actually hold the inserts in place. I also substituted allen-head screws which allowed more torque to be applied

I read the reviews but bought it anyway. Not even close to fitting without major alterations to the mounting hardware. Sending them back.

            Looking good

Leaves. They get all down into the radiator and threaten to rust out the core. No more. These look sharp and now I'll now never have to contend with debris. I read all the complaints about the hardware though and decided to go with my own design.. two horizontal bars in black. After the first two were installed and the bars held firm, the rest just popped right in. Had the radiator out, so it was easy peasy.

pretty easy, if you have a aftermarket bumper with bar access will test you a little, also recommend a bit of locktite on bolt threads so they won't vibrate loose.

            poor design

Just like all the other reviews... don't buy these if you want to just install without any modifications on the brackets... you have to bend each one to a 45 degree angle to make them hold the inserts in your grill. Easy to do, but takes more time.

I really liked the quality of these inserts, but without the ability to bend the tabs to the propper position I had to return them.

The Lesson: don't buy poorly designed stuff

So, I would not recommend these grille inserts. They are very difficult to install due to the problem with the attachment system (you have to bend them and one broke during the process), the overall poor design which makes installation difficult, and the lack of quality attachment parts (grills ok, attachment parts not ok) I purchased better hardware (screws with locking nuts, but the attachment system was not designed well, so you get what you pay for. Do not buy this product. I returned mine.

These are not easy to install by any stretch of the imagination. I had to modify the "tabs" that "hold" them in and add rubber squares.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Billet Grille Inserts - Polished (97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ)

            Looks great, but...

I read other reviews about the poor fit before purchasing these inserts. Those reviews were correct, the fit was very lose and wobbly but after some hardwear modifications (using a vice and hammer to alter the hardwear) they fit great and look awesome! Only took a few extra minutes to change the fit and it was worth it. Love the new grille look!

            Hardware is not correct

I had read some reviews from other sites and was prepared for the installation issues. All the clips that you use to fasten the grill are bent at the wrong angle. The angle should match the angle on the grill inserts, but don't. I put all the clips in a vise and bent them to the correct angle, kind of a pain, but not really a time consuming problem. Once the clips were the correct angle, everything went together pretty smooth and they look great. Good luck

            Billet Inserts

I tried to save some money and go this route, but the fit is terrible and about half of them move around. For the look, they are great, but now I will have to save up my money to buy the black ones that are like the stock inserts. I was disappointed in this product.
