Review & Install Video
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Jeep Tops USA Safari Mesh Top, fitting all 2007 and up JKs. This top is available for both the two-door and the four-door JK, and it's available in a variety of different colors: black, red, blue and gray. Today, we're going to talk about some of the features, the construction, and of course, how you get this top installed on your Jeep.
One of the best things about having a Jeep is that open-air driving experience, and whether you have a soft top or a hard top, adding a mesh top gives you that open-air experience while keeping a little bit of the sun off of your head. We all know how hot it can get in the interior of your Jeep when you are driving around with no top on at all, and a top like this will block 80-plus% of the UV rays, helping to keep you from getting burnt and keeping you a little bit cooler while still giving you that open-air experience that we're after.
Now, there are a lot of mesh tops available on the market from a lot of different brands, but this one from Jeep Tops USA is, in my opinion, the highest quality mesh top that you can get. Now, you are going to pay a little bit more for it, but this top is going to hold up and last longer than any of the other ones available.
The main body of this top is a polymer mesh that, as I mentioned before, blocks 80% of UV rays from coming into the Jeep. The outside of the top is sewn with a two-inch UV-resistant polyester, using UV-resistant thread, so this is going to hold up really well in the bright sunlight. The UV rays can, of course, fade the top, but also break down materials, so having this completely UV-resistant means it's going to last a very long time. This is one of those items where you take it out of the box, you hold it in your hand, and even if you don't have anything to compare it to, you can tell that this was built with quality and longevity in mind.
A couple of things that I really like about this design is that it covers over top of the sport bar on the sides. A lot of other mesh tops leave a little bit of a gap between the sport bar and the top, where sun can come in. This gives it a much more finished look, in my opinion, and it keeps light from coming in those gaps. This top is also attached onto the Jeep with polyester webbing and plastic buckles, as opposed to bungee cords that a lot of other companies on the market use. Now, aside from being able to lose those bungee cords pretty easily, and you guys know what I'm talking about, those bungees will eventually stretch out. On top of that, when you are at highway speed, the top can start to flap a little bit because you have the elastic stretching and contracting. With these buckles, once you snap them in place and pull them tight, you're not going to have any flapping, and Jeep Tops USA tests these tops up to 85 miles an hour on the highway.
Again, this is going to be a little bit more expensive than a lot of the other mesh tops on the market. But if you're somebody who plans on using this top a lot, who plans on either running this instead of their hard top through a large portion of the summer, or plans on taking the soft top down and having this top in place, and plans on this top taking a lot of abuse, I would definitely recommend spending a little bit more on this option over some of the other ones on the market because this is definitely going to hold up. And, speaking of other top options, even though this does wrap over the roll bars, you can leave this top installed underneath of your factory soft top or your factory hard top.
Getting this top installed on your Jeep is going to be a very simple process. Even though you can leave this installed underneath your factory hard top or soft top, in order to get it installed initially, you will have to remove those tops. From there, you'll start at the front of the Jeep, attaching your new mesh top to the top of the windshield frame in much the same way that your soft top or hard top would connect. From there, it's just a matter of unrolling the top, and as you work your way back, clipping the plastic buckles around the roll bar and cinching them down. Once you work your way to the very back, you can go and make sure that all of your straps are tight, and you're finished. This whole installation shouldn't take you more than a half-hour and you won't need any tools to get it done.
The old adage that you get what you pay for is thrown around a lot these days, but this is one of those products where I truly believe it is the case. You do have to pay a little bit more for this. In fact, I don't know that there is a mesh top on the market that is more expensive than this one, but I also believe that there isn't a mesh top on the market that is as high a quality as this one is.
Now, if you're somebody who just plans on using a mesh top a couple of times a season or maybe over a couple of seasons and isn't going to use it again, then yeah, I wouldn't spend this much money to get this high quality of a top. However, if you're somebody who's in a drier climate who plans on having this top installed on their Jeep for a big portion of the year and wants something that is going to hold up better than anything else on the market, I absolutely think it's worth paying a couple extra dollars for this top.
So if you're looking for a mesh top to give you a little bit of protection from the sun's rays while maintaining that open-air driving experience, and you want a top that is going to last a good long time and is one of the best-made products on the market, I would definitely recommend taking a look at this mesh top from Jeep Tops USA.
