      Review & Installation Video

This is going to be a factory style hardtop, but it has some features your factory top wouldn't have and is also missing a few that your factory top would have. Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of this top, which is going to be a very simple one out of three wrench installation. Tops are designed to go on and off of your TJ very easily. And you can get this one installed in under an hour the first time, and even faster every time after that. But we'll talk more about that installation in just a second. This is going to be a two-piece hardtop, which means you have the target front section that you can take off very easily giving the driver and the front seat passenger that open-air driving experience. This top is also going to come with a headliner built into it right out of the box. Now, this top is going to be missing your rear wiper, rear defroster, and rear washer. So if those are going to be important to you or important in the areas that you live, maybe you wanna look at the other tops on the market. On top of the features, this top does look a little bit different than some of the other ones on the market, and certainly looks a little bit different than your factory top. It is going to be a little bit taller, has a slightly larger window in it, but the aesthetics really come down to your personal preference and if you like the look of this top over a factory top. Now, this is going to be a more expensive top than some of the other aftermarket tops that are on the market, and certainly more expensive than an OEM used top if you can find one in your area. So again, it comes down to what features you want on your top and what look you're going for. This top is made from hand laid honeycomb fiberglass, which is going to help to keep the weight down, but also keep it strong. From the outside, it's going to look very much like a factory black top. It has a very similar finish. The windows that it comes with are tinted, and as I said, the rear window isn't going to have a defrost, a wiper, or a washer. Now, the big feature that this top has, and we've mentioned it before, is the fact that this is a two-piece top. This uses a total of four adjustable latches to attach the second front piece of the top to not only the front windshield frame but also to the back half of the top as well. And all those latches are going to be adjustable, so you can make sure that everything is nice and airtight, rattle free, and nothing leaks. Getting this top installed is going to be a very simple one out of three wrench installation. And the first time you install it, it might take you about an hour. And after you do it a couple of times, you'll just get that much faster. The first step in this installation is, of course, removing your factory top or aftermarket top, whatever you currently have installed on your Jeep, remove that top completely. The next step is to have an extra set of hands, and you and a friend lift this top onto the tub. After that, you can get it bolted down with the hardware that comes with it.After that step, you can install the target top adjusting all of the latches to make sure everything is tight, and this is the part that can take a little bit more time the first time you install this. However, all of those latches do have jam nuts, so once you tighten them down, they're not something you should have to adjust over and over again. Finally, you'll have to install the back glass, which is a fairly simple process with six bolts and two hydraulic air assist grams to help with lifting that glass. Once you have those installed, you're gonna be finished. The whole installation again shouldn't take you that much more than an hour with just some traditional hand tools. This top comes in at right around $250, and there are certainly going to be some more expensive tops on the market and some less expensive tops, some kind of falls in the middle as far as the price range goes. And if you're looking for a two-piece top for your TJ, I do think that this one is going to be a pretty good option for you. However, if you absolutely want those factory features of a rear wiper, washer, and defroster, then you are going to have to look at another top. However, if you do like the look and the function of this top, I do think it's a pretty high-quality piece for the price. So if you're looking for an aftermarket hardtop for your TJ, you like the idea of a two-piece top, and you're okay with giving up some of those factory features, I think this is going to be a pretty well-built option for you. So that's my review of the DV8 Off-Road Hard Top fitting your 1997 to 2006 TJ that you can find right here at

        Tj two piece hard top

This was really a nice addition to my tj. I really like the option to be able to take the front half off and not have to remove the whole top. Well built and looks great not to mention cuts down on road noise. Very easy to install.

Conflict with the roll bar rear latches.

Over-all I like the top. There is a space conflict for the latches that hook the front and rear section together on the 2005 Wrangler X. I had to remove the padding off the roll bar to get enough room for the latch to function.

Solid with a few minor flaws

First things first: This top is built quality and is doing exactly what it's supposed to. It looks great--a welcomed change from the simple black plastic of most hard tops. With that said, it has a couple of flaws. If your tub has been banged up at all, you may have trouble lining up the six bolts that hold the main piece to the tub. (I had one tricky bolt). In addition, there seems to be some excess fiberglass on the main piece near the door (about where the door handle lines up). I literally had to sand back the fiberglass so the door could open and close properly. Still have to slam it. Last--the hardware included to bolt on the back glass is atrocious. Wasted 2 hours trying to make it work. (The main holdup was we couldn't get the lock nuts to tighten beyond maybe 1/4" up the bolt. After ensuring the right wrench and not cross-threading, we concluded the threads were mismatched.) You definitely want to get new hardware for those six bolts and nuts. Getting some rubber washers to go on those is a plus. A final huge disappointment is that the front section is a lot bigger than it may seem--it does not fit in the TJ whatsoever. Consider this if you like popping the front of your soft top back for some extra sun, then easily putting it back in the case of rain. You have to decide before you ride if you're gonna leave it at home or not. Overall, though, I'm happy with it. Like most Jeep projects, give yourself more time than recommended. Took my first drive with the front section off, and it was great. Still a lot quieter than expected. All the seams are weatherstripped very well, and the carpet inside is great.

        Looks good

Nice looking top. Took me about 20 hours to install. Shipping needs to be improved. I got a large scratch on the removable panel. Not worth filing a claim. Fitment of the removable panel is the hardest part. The rear latches don't open all the way because the hit the roll bar. Not sure who designed that. Can latch it tight. Rear rubber seal on the window was messed up. I have to glue it back straight after it came loose. Afer adjusting it, I think I'm good now. Looks great, but need to work on mold and make it a little better fit......$2300 is a lot for what you get.....but it looks good....

When removed, can the targa piece be carried in, or somehow on, the Jeep?

      • Thank you for your question! The Targa piece is very large, and may fit in the back of the Jeep but may be tight. I also would not recommend to carry this on the Jeep.

Does the rear hatch back lock?

      • Like the standard TJ hardtops, the rear window will lock when the tailgate is locked. The rear window cannot be opened unless the tailgate is open.
