Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Bestop Trektop Pro fitting your four-door 2007 and up JK. Today, we're going to talk through the installation of this top which I am going to give a two out of three wrenches. There isn't any major modification or cutting of your jeep necessary to get this top installed. However, it is going to take a few hours. So again, two out of three wrenches, but we'll talk a little bit more about the install in just a second. We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the other features of this top. One of the reasons we love having a Wrangler is the fact that you can very easily get that open-air driving experience by either flipping your soft top down or removing your hard top. But there are definitely benefits to having a hard top over a soft top and vice versa. What the Bestop Trektop Pro does is integrate the best of both your soft top and your hard top which is a really nice feature. This is a very unique top that is not available from any other manufacturer. This top gives you hard glass windows, as you can see here. This is a rear window. It also gives you hard glass side windows that you can slide open, but it still gives you the same soft top sunrider feature that you're used to from either your factory or a lot of other aftermarket soft tops. So again, it is really the best of both worlds. Now, because you are getting so many features and you are getting a very high-quality top from Bestop, this is going to be one of the most expensive tops that you can get for your JK. But if you're looking for all of these features and you want something that's going to be very high quality, this is definitely a good top to take a look at. So, as I said, this top is really the best of both of worlds. For the upper portion of the top, you're essentially getting a Bestop Trektop that is made of the twill material. So, again, it is going to be that 30-ounce acrylic material that is really high-quality material. The stitching and everything is going to hold up very well over time even if you have your top on year-round, it's definitely going to be able to take a beating. On top of that, you do have that sunrider feature where you can very easily flip back the front portion of the top giving that open-air driving experience to just the front two passengers, so you do have a lot of flexibility. Now, the hard top portion of this top is, as we said before, those windows. You are getting glass windows around all three of the rear windows. The two side windows do slide allowing you to very easily open those windows, where with a soft top you would have to unzip them and store the windows somewhere, and with the hard top, of course, they're not openable, so again, best of both worlds. The rear window does open up just like your hard top window would with two gas shocks that allow it to stay open. It has an integrated defrost, so you can just plug it into your factory hard top wiring harness and have that defrost mode, and this will accept your factory rear wiper, so you just pop it out of your hard top if you have one and install it in here. Or if you don't have a hard top but you want that rear window option, you can just pick up an OEM rear wiper, and again, it will install right in this rear glass. You can also remove all three of the rear windows just like you can from a soft top, however, you still have the same issues you do with the soft top with having to store those windows somewhere, and they're not going to store very easily. Being glass, of course, you can't fold them, you can't roll them. So this is really designed to leave those windows in place or take them out and leave them in your garage before you even leave for the day. As I mentioned before, I am going to give this a two out of three wrenches for the install, and you are going to have to give yourself around three hours to get this top put on your jeep. Of course, this is going to be much more involved than you're traditional soft top or your traditional hard top, and there is some additional hardware. Again, no drilling or major modification necessary but a lot of pieces and a lot of steps, so definitely take your time and give yourself around three hours. The first step in installing this top is, of course, removing whichever top you currently have on your jeep whether it be a soft top or a hard top. And you're gonna remove that top completely. After that, you'll go ahead and install the halo portion of your new Bestop Trektop Pro and then move onto installing your rear window. Finally, you'll install the top itself, the actual fabric portion of your top, and then you can install your rear side windows. Again, the whole process will take around three hours, and you are going to need pretty much every hand tool you have at your disposal to get this bolted up. I said at the top of this video that this is a very expensive top, but there is good reason for that. You are getting a very high-quality top, and you're getting a top with a lot of features that you can't get anywhere else. If you just consider the fact that a glass window is considerably more expensive to manufacture than the soft window is, all of a sudden the additional cost that you have to pay for this top becomes worth it. So if you are looking for a top that has the best of both worlds, that soft top and hard top all in one, and you're going to take advantage of all the features this top has, and you're looking for a high-quality top, I absolutely think that this is worth the price. That being said, if all you're looking for is the Bestop Trektop slant back style, and you're not interested in having the hard glass windows, you can certainly save yourself some money by going with the Bestop Trektop NX. So if you're looking for a very high quality and well built top for your JK that integrates the best of both a soft top and a hard top, giving you the security of hard glass windows that are much more difficult to get into, but also the flexibility to go and get that open air driving experience that a lot of us purchased our jeeps for, this is going to be a very nice option, as long as you have the budget for it. So that's my review of the Bestop Trektop Pro fitting all 2007 and up JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Premium Performance. The Bestop Trektop Pro combines the benefits of a hardtop, a soft top and a bikini top into a single easy to use luxury JKU top. Designed with more freedom than a hard top, the Trektop Pro combines the classic sun rider, flip back function with real glass side panels, making this the first soft top with open air available for rear passengers and pets. Bestop's special attention to detail provides superior performance unavailable in any other top on today's market.

Superior Construction. This industry first top features Bestop's premium 30 oz. triple layer black acrylic twill fabric to provide a wrinkle free look with durability in mind. It makes use of durable door surrounds and an all new rear arch assembly made of thermoplastic resin for exceptional lightweight performance and strength. Real glass windows eliminates the security issues found in standard vinyl windows and they include an easy to use security latch for peace of mind.

Functionality. The Trektop Pro eliminates the need for a tailgate bar, as well as extra soft top bows or assemblies. The Rear Hatch and Arch Assembly are easily removed along with the side panel using a factory inspired belt rail system to create a traditional safari style bikini top. The modular top rails join up with door surrounds and the Arch Body for a solid and weather tight fit that eliminates zippers for a smooth and painless installation in moments.

Rear Hatch. Real glass provides new opportunities never seen before on a soft top; A fully integrated defrost system is ready to go to work and accepts factory style wiring bundles found on hardtops. As well this rear hatch is ready to accept your hardtop's factory wiper to make the swap from hardtop to Trektop Pro without stress or worry.

Benefits. The Trektop Pro's lightweight design not only makes it easier to handle for all users, since it lightens your JKU's load it will help save on gas costs as well. No zippers means no fuss and eliminates the weakest part of conventional soft top, enhancing the longevity and performance of this top.

Application. The Bestop Trektop Pro is designed for installation on 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited (4 door) models. Factory style wiper, wiper motor and wiring harness sold separately.

What locks the rear glass? Is it latched or does it bounce based on the pressure of the struts?

JonW

  • Hello, the rear glass isn't latched, the struts and the tailgate hold it in place, to open the glass you first will have to open the tailgate.

Does the sliding rear windows in the open position help reduce wind baffling when driving with the top on and with the doors / windows down?

JnT

  • Thank you for your question! Opening up the airflow should quiet down the baffling in the cab.

My current soft top doesn't seal well at the back edge of the front doors (2 door Jeep). Is this a hard piece at that point or does it rely on the same factory Velcro seal?

BillJ

  • The Bestop Trektop Pro will utilize a similar fastening/sealing method to stock tops where it attaches behind the door.

1. Can you drive with the rear glass open? [Or do you have to completely remove it?] 2. How long does it take to remove/replace the rear window and side panels to go back and forth between full coverage and the bikini style? 3. Does Bestop make glass door panels also? I have a Sport with vinyl door windows. Thanks!

BB

  • With the Bestop Trektop Pro, it is recommended to drive with the rear window closed, or removed to prevent damage to the glass. Removal of the rear window and rear side windows will be rather time consuming, and if you plan to remove often, the Trektop Glide may be a better option. At this time Bestop does not offer glass door windows.

How secure is the top? Can anyone get into it from the outside by simply opening windows or removing a panel?

ClayR

  • The Bestop Trektop Pro will be fairly secure, as far as soft tops are concerned, however the sliding windows are capable of being forced (though this will typically break them) or, like other tops, the fabric could be cut.

Hi, the seal between the rear glass and the tailgate leaks. Is this a replaceable part? Or do you have other suggestions. Thank you.

SteveN

  • If you have a Bestop Trektop Pro, you should be able to get a replacement seal directly though Bestop for their top! Phone:800-845-3567 or Email: csbestop@bestop.com.

    Perfect...

First let me say that I'm no shade-tree mechanic but I do know how to use a wrench. I only followed Bestop's YouTube video to do the complete install, from removing my old soft-top to completing this install was just under 4 hours. Only needed a helping hand when installing the 'halo'. This thing is quieter than the original soft-top, the rear windows are very convenient for venting, and the tailgate window is just sweet. I'm in the back of my Jeep multiple times a week and this is going to make my life so much easier. The day after I finished the install we had a pretty significant rainstorm and I didn't have a single drop of water inside. Awesome product. HIGHTLY RECOMMEND!!!!

    LOVE THIS TOP

It's worth every single penny to have this top. It's literally the best of both worlds (hard and soft tops I mean). The glass windows in the side and back are my favorite part. It creates a smooth looking top and is so much more quiet than a regular soft top when you're driving on the highway. I honestly can't imagine ever getting a different one. I did it by myself and I'm quite the ameteur when it comes to being a mechanic.

    Great Top

This top was easy to install, directions were easy to read and understand. I put this on alone in 2 hours and had no issues with the installation. The road noise is reduced quite a bit, and the solid rear window makes getting things in or out of the back so much easier, NO Zippers!

    Only one problem

I really liked this top, all the conveniences that it has, tinted glass windows are great, lift rear door and more. But when your flip back the top for your sunroof, the material sags down and sits on top of my head. I am 6' tall, so my seat is back pretty far and of course my height, I don't know yet out to fix it, customer support says, that's the way it is. No remedies, so if your 6' tall or taller, I would consider this problem.

love the way the top looks

It only took three hours to install the trektop pro after watching the video on line don't try without watching. the top looks good and it has been really nice to have on when it is hot out. I recommend this top and extreme terrain has been very good to work with the defroster cable did not work and they exchanged it for a new one without a hassle. I will definitely be buying more parts from them for my 2014 jeep unlimited.

I returned it. Problem is, if you take the top off, you have to leave it at home. If you take the top off and store it in the back, there is a very good chance of the glass breaking

This is the best Best Top that I have owned!

This top is amazing, went on just like the video instructions said. Love not having to deal with Velcro and zippers. So easy to pull back window and side windows off. Also glass back window is incredible. Road noise is very minimal. The investment is well worth it.

    Great Option!

To start off with I'm a visual learner and I followed the installation video on youtube(bestop trektop pro installation) which made the project much easier. I would also say to watch the video before installing to make things go smooth. I had a hardtop before so I can say that it is louder now and my bass response isn't as strong as it was before(15 with alpine). In regards to the noise I do have bigger tires which made it louder with the hardtop compared to stock and now with the soft top it increased a little more(With good reason as it is a soft top after all). So that is the negative news about the top. With that being said I love this top! 2 latches and the top folds back. The sliding glass side windows provide great airflow which my Golden doodle appreciates when shes in the back. My daughter pointed out that she likes the black color inside much more than the white of the hardtop. I haven't taken the windows out since initial install but it doesn't look too bad to remove. I'm sure once you've done it a few times you'll be looking around 5 minutes install/uninstall. I did the install by myself and it was a little tricky when doing the halo so if you have a buddy that can drink a few with you and remain on standby it should be a fairly simple installation. I think this is a great option for those that want a soft top but aren't fans of plastic windows in the back or messing with zippers. For the most part the top itself isnt designed to flip all the way back(topless) without having to take it apart. As it is the front will fold back and you can expose about halfway into the rear passenger area without having to take anything apart on the top. All things considered this top looks great and is built very well. Thanks Bestop!!

    Nice Hybrid Top.

Great New Product. As a new Jeep Wrangler owner I can't compare this to any other product. I had a damaged hard top and needed to purchase a new soft top. This product enabled me to run just one top instead of having to swap out the tops seasonally. The Black Twill is really slick and seems like a "blacker" black than the typical top fabric. Installation was time consuming but fairly easy. I did the full install by myself with the exception of getting help with the back rear window. Looking forward to see how the product performs long term.

    Worth It

I researched about 20 different softops. I bought this one because of the glass back window and the ease of getting into the cargo space. My jeep has a hardtop and I wanted the same convenience. I also bought this top because of the ease of opening up the Sunrider it takes literally 10 seconds if that. The fit is great it’s not noisy and has not leaked one bit. Also, i can be topless in 10 mins or less. Takes about 15 mins to put it all back on. Worth the money.

    Good top, but

I was very excited to receive my Trektop Pro Hybrid top. It was everything I hoped it would be but; the weather stripping gasket that goes on the bottom of the back glass is to short. The top looks great and did take an afternoon to remove old top/hardware and install new top. Jeep is noticeably quieter with the Trektop vs. my stock soft top. If it wasn’t for the weather stripping gasket being to short (will easily leak since I can see around the gasket) this would have gotten all 5s.

    Awesome Top!!!

This top has been worth the money thus far and don't see that changing. Super quiet at any speed. All windows minus the back one are easy to remove and put back on the jeep. Having the side windows opened allow wind flow into the jeep for all passengers unlike the stock plastic ones. Overall really impressed with the top and the people at Extreme Terrain for taking care of me during the shipping process for this top. I didn't receive all the pieces for the top to be installed. Since Bestop was dragging their feet, Extreme Terrain just sent me a whole new top and told me send back any unused parts.

I just installed the top and took my jeep for a ride. The noise is considerably quieter, the ease of use is great and also it's awesome looking. Not to complain but the directions are horrible, installation pictures are fine but there should be some written directions explaining some of the pertinent measures when installing this top like not tightening the bolts until every part is in place to allow the required adjustments. I still give this top a thumbs up. :-)

Love the ease of having an open top! Pop the two windshield locks and flop back the top!! The rest of the top is easier to take off and on as well not to mention alot lighter too! There is some extra noise back where the side windows sometimes hit on the frame; that is the only reason I gave this top 4 stars.

    Good Item, But...

Most of the install went very well. The problem arose when installing the center arch bow, the thing bent in the middle.. Now, there is a very noticeable "peak" in the middle of the roof. I don't know if the arch was not properly manufactured or made from substantial material. But overall it still looks very good. I'll submit some pictures after I cool down.

    Greatly satisfied

Extremely satisfied. It took us about 3 and half hours to put together. It looks really nice. Once I got the replacement order. The first set of boxes were damaged. Everyone compliments me on it and ask where I got it. I have never seen a top like this around here. Very nice having glass, easier to clean better than plastic. It is crystal clear when looking out of back window. Would recommend to everyone.
