    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review of the Bestop Sunrider for hard top fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This is available in the twill material that you see here, and it's also available in black diamond for a few dollars less. This product is designed to replace the freedom panels on your hard top with a soft top section that acts very much like the sunrider feature on your full factory soft top. So, if you're somebody who likes to take the freedom panels out a lot to give you that open air driving feel but thinks it's a little bit cumbersome and that they're a little bit heavy, and also wants to make sure that you don't scratch and damage the freedom panels, taking them on and off all the time, this is a really nice option. You can very easily unclip the front header, flip back the sunrider feature, and all of a sudden you have the open air driving experience that you're after without all of the fuss of removing and reinstalling the freedom panels. Now, this is an expensive item, especially the twill version that you see here on the table. But, in my opinion, if you're somebody who has a hard top and doesn't want to go full soft top but wants to more easily get that open air driving experience, this is 100% the way to go. Like most things Bestop, this is a really complete product. Bestop assumes that you only have a hard top on your Jeep, and therefore includes the door surrounds, as well as all the other hardware that you need to get this attached onto your vehicle. As I said before, it comes in two different materials, the twill which is really similar to your premium factory soft top material, and a black diamond material. The twill is a higher quality material. It's heavier. It feels better. It looks better. In my opinion, it's all around a better option. However, it is going to be more expensive than the black diamond, so it does come down to your budget. As I said before, overall this is an expensive part although it is a very useful one. This top is going to install on your Jeep very easily. Of course you'll have your hard top installed, and the first step in getting this put on is to remove your freedom panels. From there you'll install the door surrounds that come with this setup. Then, you can bolt this frame onto the door surrounds. There are also a couple of clips that you'll have to install to attach the frame of your new soft top section onto your sound bar. And then it's just a matter of closing the top and securing it across the top of the windshield with these factory style clips. This setup also comes with a couple of Velcro loops to put on the frame when you do have the sunrider feature flipped back to keep things from flapping and moving around in the wind. The whole installation should only take you about an hour. You won't need any specialty tools, just a socket set, some screwdrivers and some Allen keys. Now there is one area that you'll have to make a little slit in the factory roll bar padding to be able to get all of your hardware for your new frame attached. In my opinion, that's not a big deal. Even if you were to remove this and go with a soft top or go back to your hard freedom panels, it's not something you're ever really going to notice or see, so it certainly wouldn't keep me from purchasing and installing this product. Like I've said before, Bestop products are a little bit more expensive than some of the competition, but, in my opinion, they're worth it. They make really high quality products that are going to last a good long time, and the kits are very complete. You're going to have everything you need to get this installed right in the box that it comes in. The only thing you'll need from your factory Jeep are the mushroom knobs that hold the freedom panels into the sound bar. Everything else, you're gonna have. You're not going to have to worry about ordering anything else. It all comes right in the box for you. In my opinion, even though this is an expensive piece, it's worth it. If I had a hard top on my JK, I would definitely be saving up for one of these. I'm one of those people that likes the open air driving experience. And having wrestled with the JK freedom panels a few times and, I'm ashamed to say, nicking one of them moving it around, I think this is a sound investment. If you have a hard top on your JK and you like the security, the quietness and the durability of that hard top but you want to make having the open air driving experience for the front two passengers a little bit easier than removing your hard freedom panels, this Sunrider soft top is a great addition to your hard top. While it is a little bit pricey, in my opinion, it's completely worth it for the functionality. That's my review of the Bestop Sunrider for hard top fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Get the Freedom You Desire. When you have a hardtop, it does not mean that you have to give up a quiet or comfortable ride. Unacceptable installation process, handy product

I'm surprised I can type tonight as my hands took a thorough beating trying to install this top. The first part (side brackets) went fine and had no issues. The rest had me wanting to throw wrenches at whoever designed this top. It is absolutely unacceptable that an $800 Jeep top 1) doesn't include bolts that are long enough to not require someone mashing the pieces together while another person strains to get the threads to catch, and 2) has fabric so tight that you again need either two people to press the pieces together or one person who simultaneously sits on the top while also reaches into the Jeep to get the latch to catch. What should have been a relatively easy 45 minutes install *if the bolts were long enough* turned in to 3 1/2 hours of pain and frustration in over 100 degree heat as we contorted all around the Jeep trying to get things to line up and push together and catch-the-threads-for-the-love-of-god. After it's installed, of course, it's a great product to have. The convenience of not having to remove/store those panels is worth the $800. I combine mine with a sun shade and have zero problems with both of them being on at the same time. I've driven with it with speeds up to 70mph and it holds solid. **IF you choose to buy this, do yourself a favor and have large, heavy-duty clamps with adjustable feet ready to assist (you'll want them for all the times you have to squeeze pieces together, including the mushroom bolts); go buy longer bolts or have Bestop sent them to you (I didn't do this, but read that other reviewers had success with this); have a second person with you to either lend a hand when needed or give you a sanity check; and make sure you have time for a cocktail afterwards because you'll need to calm your frustrations if you had the same experience I did.

      Great Final Product

Once installed the sunrider is superb. No leaks, easy to raise and lower and a huge improvement over the factory tee tops. I wasted hours during the installation even had to call on my son to help engage two of the bolts needed to install the top. They are too short and when engaged only have two other three turns of thread engaged so they strip easily. Don't waste time with them go to a parts supplier and get replacement bolts about .3" longer before starting the job to avoid the hassle. With the correct length bolts this is a 5 star. Those short bolts are inexcusable in an otherwise well engineered product.

      A Must Have !

I have been looking at this top for over a year . I got it two weeks ago on Friday . My wife helped me install it which took around an hour and half . It fit perfect . The screws are a little tricky to line up but now that we installed this one we could install another one in way less time . My advice is take your time watch the install video and get some help . We have had the top open every day since we got it ! It is pricey but worth every penny . It is slightly louder than the hard panels but not like a full soft top . We had several hard rains with no leaks . Best upgrade yet !

      Leaks? What leaks?

Please read entire review before making a decision. I really pondered getting this top for awhile. First the reviews of it leaking and second the cost, I thought was pretty high for what I was buying. I finally ordered it and the install really is straight forward. Yes, the one set of screws could be about a 1/2 inch longer and it would be a lot easier to get them started (hardest part of the install), but if you focus on the alignment of the pieces they aren't impossible. It took me about 2 hours by myself form pulling the Jeep into the garage to backing it back out. That included uninstalling and then reinstalling underneath the new top my shade cover for the front. With great pride and enthusiasm I drove straight to the automatic carwash and immediately regretted my decision as I sat through the entire car wash with water pouring, yes pouring in the entire left side of the roof and soaking the left side of my body and front Jeep interior. I drove home with much less pride and a slightly different enthusiasm as I cussed ever buying this top. Once home I inspected my installation and noted the right side rear seal was sitting below the roof line, but the left side rear was not. I loosened up the left side and realigned the best I could. Once it was all tightened back up the left side was now below the roof line just like the right side. The rear middle straight part of the seal is above the roof line, but when it starts to curve out towards the doors the seal is sucked in and between the hardtop and the Sunrider top on both sides. Learning from my previous mistake I parked the Jeep in the yard and attacked it with the garden hose. To my surprise...zero leaks. I have had it installed for about 2 months now and have since driven with it opened multiple times. I had it parked in a parking lot during a very heavy rain storm and have driven it in medium rain and light rain. Still zero leaks. As someone else mentioned, the rain gutters are too short, so when you open the doors it will run in towards the front. I believe my 2004 soft top TJ did the same thing? So overall, I am very pleased with the top. If you are mindful of the installation I believe you will enjoy yours too. It is obviously louder than the hard panels, but not as loud as a full soft top. And as an added bonus for me having the convenience of the hard top and still getting the nostalgia of the sound of rain hitting a soft top while driving my Jeep is priceless enough for me. ;-)

      Bestop Sunrider

Installed in about an hour and a half, although about half that time was for two bolts. Fits and looks good. Did not leak in a 2" downpour. So easy to use, I open it almost every time I drive, as opposed to almost never opening the freedom tops.

      Doesn’t even fit properly

Waited almost 4 weeks for the product to arrive after it was lost and then I had to get Extreme Terrain to even deal with the lost package and then continually follow up with them. When it arrived, it didn’t even fit. Nearly 3 inches off from latching properly to the front windshield. I’ve had issues with ET parts multiple times now and this is the last straw. Disappointed that they would sell a $800 product that doesn’t fit properly.

2014 4 door with freedom tops

Absolutely love this sunrider!! So much easier to use than the freedom top panels that came with my Jeep. No more fire drill removing the tops and putting them in the back. Just unlatch the front and push back into open position. Have been in somewhat higher winds with top open and have not noticed any rattling, and hard rain while closed with no leaks. Job took about two hours with a little help to install. Only trouble encountered was pushing up M6x20mm screws up thru rail into the metal bracket. Will definitely need 4mmT-handle or driver to put enough pressure to start the screws in the welded nut in metal bracket. Was concerned with being able to reach back to close the sunrider while seated, but worries were soon put to rest - there is a ledge on the header that's easy to grab ahold of to close it. So easy to push back and close up. Kind of pricey but is made very well and in my opinion is worth the cost. Will probably take it off and put the freedom top back on for winter.

A must have for summer freedom

I contemplated this for a year. So glad I did it. It installed pretty quickly; although the mushroom knobs and screws could have been slightly longer to allow the initial install catch to be an easier process. You need 2 people: 1 to hold it in place and 1 to tighten in the mushrooms and screws (or use a clamp). No leaking as some have reported. There is no comparison to how much nicer this is than dealing with your freedom panels. It’s a little noisy when closed but come on folks, IT’S A JEEP! I’m very happy I did it!

Love my Sunrider. Easy to install. No leaks so far - only been in 2 raid storms - no major downpours, but I think it will hold. I blasted it with a jet stream from the hose from all directions. Flip the latches and lift back and flip forward and latch to close. I don’t even have to stand; I can do it sitting in the driver seat.
