      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. It's Sara with extremeterrain.com, and today we have a review and install of the Heavy-Duty Power Tailgate Lock Conversion Kit, fitting your '16 and newer Toyota Tacoma models. This is perfect for the Tacoma owner who's looking for a budget-friendly way to add some security and convenience to their Tacoma. This tailgate lock conversion kit works with your factory locking system, automatically locking the tailgate when you lock your doors. Once installed, this kit allows you to lock and unlock your tailgate with your key fob, making it especially useful to secure your bed if you have a tonneau cover. It features a reinforced injection-molded construction with a black finish. And because it installs inside your tailgate, features a tamper-proof design. And as far as price goes, this kit comes in at around $200 making it a budget-friendly way to add security and convenience to your Tacoma. And as far as the install goes, I'm giving this one a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. It does feature a direct bolt-up install with no modification required, although some minor wiring is required to tap into your factory locking system. All in all, this can be done in approximately one hour. So with that said, let's check out that install. For this install, we used an impact gun, but a regular hand ratchet will work just fine. You'll also need a 10-millimeter socket as well as a T30 Torx socket and you may want an extension. You'll also need a trim panel removal tool and you may want a set of needle-nose pliers and a set of cutters. All right. So the first step in our install with the tailgate down, we're gonna grab a T30 Torx socket and remove all of these bolts holding on the tailgate cover. Now, we're gonna move on to the bolts holding on the cover itself. They're a little bit smaller than the ones we just removed, but they're still a T30. So, go ahead and grab that T30 socket and remove these. Continue on until all these bolts are removed. All right. And now all the bolts are removed from this cover portion, what you can do is lift up on this top plastic piece, lift up on the back of the cover and slide it back towards the bed, then remove it off of your truck. Now that you have that cover removed, you can see the lock actuator here. Right next to it is a small 10-millimeter bolt. With a 10-millimeter socket and an extension, go ahead and get this removed. Now, we will not be reusing this, so you can set it aside. With that bolt removed, grab the pop and lock and slide it in the other opening. Now, we're gonna start to line up this plastic tab with an open hole and then that threaded hole with the metal sleeved hole in the pop and lock. You'll feel it sort of glide in place. Once you have it in place, grab the included 10-millimeter and slide it in that opening there. Now, what you can do is use the socket with an extension to help you get it lined up and start those threads. Then once you have those threads in, grab that 10-millimeter socket with an extension again and go ahead and get this tightened down. Now, at the edge of the tailgate, you're gonna see a wiring harness. We need to run our wires along this harness. And to get this removed so we can run the wiring, you'll see a small plastic clip right here at the edge of the tailgate. All you're gonna do is grab these two tabs and pull straight back that way you can release this. Now, it'll come out on an angle, so you wanna rock it back and then remove it. From here, we're gonna pull it up.Now, you'll see on the other side there's a tab. This is the opposite side of the tab we used to remove it. You wanna grab a small flathead or trim tool and just pop that up and then remove this plastic piece completely. Now we have a new one of these included in the kit with a hole for your wiring harness and a hole for the new harness we're gonna run. Go ahead and grab your tool, either the trim tool or a flathead, and open that up. While it's open, we're gonna run our wiring harness in here. You wanna use the male side and run it in the square opening. Might be a little bit hard to see, but just go ahead and run that through there. Now, we wanna line up both of these harnesses in the openings in this new clip. So, go ahead and overtop of the pop and lock harness, overtop of your factory harness, and clip it closed. Now, you'll see the two tabs here. Remember, those faced forward. Line up the clips at the backside. There should be little tabs for them to sit on top of your tailgate. And then clip this new connector in place. Now, if you look to the inside of the bed, you'll see a second clip that's exactly the same as the one that we just did. This one will be a little bit harder for you to see, but we're gonna do the same process. Pull back on that tab. You can either use your finger or a trim tool. Same process. Pop open the factory clip, set it aside, and reinstall your new one. Don't forget to install this new wiring harness. This is gonna take the exact same path as the previous one. Again, this might be a little bit hard to see, but you're gonna fish the female end of this wiring extension through the opening into the bed. This will end up underneath your truck. And once you finish that wiring through, line that connector back up and clip it into place. Now, get the wiring harness that is connected to the pop and lock itself and the wiring harness extension that you just installed and plug them in inside the tailgate. Make sure this entire harness is routed properly and zip tied down to secure it, then we can go underneath the truck. Now that we're underneath our truck, you should fish that wiring harness out from the edge of the bed. You'll notice some other wiring harnesses right where it comes out. And once you fish that down, grab that female connector, and then grab the male connector on your longer wiring harness and plug them in. Now, what you're gonna do is grab the harness and run it the length of this wiring harness right next to it, securing it with zip ties as you go. You're gonna run it the entire length of your driver's side along this harness up and to the driver's side floor. Now, in order to run the wiring harness up through the driver floor, we need to remove some of these trim panels and also part of the carpet just temporarily. What we're gonna do is remove this kick panel first, either by hand or with a pop clip tool. Just go ahead and pop up this trim piece and set that aside. Now, we do need to remove the kick panel up top as well. You'll see a small plastic nut. All you need to do is twist this off. You can even do it by hand. Just go ahead and twist this nut off and remove it. Now, we can remove this piece. Start by removing the back corner. And then you'll just get underneath it with a trim tool or your hands and pull out on a diagonal to release this piece out of the way. Now that we have that plastic piece removed, we can pull up this section of the carpet. Go ahead and pull up on this plastic piece. If you need to, you can use a trim tool and release it on the inside. Once that is released, pull up on the carpet until you can see a rubber grommet back here. Now, either by hand, with your trim tool, or with a flathead, take that grommet and remove it.Now, with the carpet peeled back, you'll notice a grommet right up top here. What you're gonna do is just peel this back. We're gonna remove it for now to make it a little easier, then we'll reinstall it after we run our wiring through this hole. Now, we're gonna run our wiring through this grommet. And it may be a little bit tricky to get the wiring up here because it's not a straight shot. So, we're gonna use a coat hanger here and we're just gonna bend it to get it through to the frame till we can see it. Then we'll attach the wiring to the end of this and pull it back through. Now that we have the coat hanger through, what we're gonna do is grab this open end of the wiring harness, line it up with the coat hanger, and then I'm gonna throw some tape on there just to make sure that it's secure when we pull it through the hole. Now we can pull this whole thing back through the hole. Now, you can go ahead and pull the coat hanger with your wiring through. Just be nice and careful so you don't damage the wiring. And then once it's through, you can remove the tape. We can start wiring it up.Next up, we need to remove this connector so that we can tap into it with our wiring. You can do this by hand or you can use a trim tool to press down on the tab and pull back on the connector to remove it. Now, you may want to trim this sheath back a little bit to expose some more wiring. You can use pretty much any tool, razor, knife. I'm using a set of cutters here. Just be very, very careful that you don't cut any of these wires as you're peeling this back. Now, we're gonna tap into this blue wire here on the connector for power and the black one right next to it for ground. They've included these vampire clips, which are not the best way to tap into stuff but they are definitely the fastest. If you'd like a more permanent solution, you can tap in and butt connect or use solder. Either way, we're gonna use what comes with this kit. Now, the vampire clip is good because you can go right over top of the wiring that's already there. Make sure you get it in that opening in between the two metal prongs and pinch it together. Now, you can do this by hand, but I like to use a needle-nose pliers to make sure you get a good connection because if the metal does not pierce the sheath of the wiring, there will be no good connection. So, you wanna make sure you get it all the way crimped down there. We're gonna do the same thing with the ground wire right next to it. Using the included vampire clip, we're gonna do the same thing on the wire right next to it, the black ground wire. Line it up in between those two metal prongs of the vampire clip. And then now you can squish this down by hand or I like to use a set of needle-nose as I said before just to ensure it's got a nice tight connection and we won't have any wiring issues. Now what we're gonna do is slide these two open wires of your wiring harness in to this plastic connector. The green side slide into the G, and then the blue side, same thing, line it up and then slide it into the blue. Make sure it's fully connected. You should hear a small click and you should see the metal part come up through that opening. From there, it'll connect into this connector. You wanna make sure you have the blue side on the proper side and the green side on the proper side there. But before that, we're gonna connect these to the vampire clips we installed on your factory harness. Now, the black on your factory harness will go to the blue. It's a little bit confusing here. These are both ground, so make sure you connect those properly. And then the green here which is power will connect to the blue on your factory harness. Go ahead make sure they're fully seated on top of those two wires. Then you'll grab it and plug it back into its factory location. Might be a little bit hard to see. Now, you can connect these. Now, there's only one way this can go in. If you've done the blue and the green on the proper side, you'll see a flat part of this connector. Go ahead and plug those two in now. Tuck up your wiring. Doesn't hurt to throw a few zip ties on there just to make sure it is properly secured onto your carpet. And now we can put the carpet and the kick panels back in place. Now that we have everything plugged in, you can tuck up your wiring. You might wanna throw a zip tie or two on there just to make sure it's secured and we'll replace this grommet. Now, you can either cut a hole in this grommet or make a slit towards the edge, up to you. Once you've done that, just go ahead and pop it back in its original position. Tuck the carpet down. Again, make sure your wiring is secured. We'll start to tuck the carpet back in its factory position. Now that your wiring is secure, go ahead and pop this factory plastic piece over top. Make sure it's over that post as well. And grab that nut and reinstall it. Now, we can reinstall this trim piece. Go ahead and pop it back in place. Now, before you put this cover back on, you wanna double-check to make sure this actuator is functioning properly.Grab your key fob, go ahead and hit the lock button, and then unlock. And that's exactly how it should function. If you need to make any adjustments, you can do so now. And once you're sure it works properly, we can reinstall the cover. And now that you've checked the function of the actuator, you can go ahead and place this cover back on top of your tailgate. Make sure you're tucking it under this plastic piece and lining up all of the bolt holes. Then once you have this piece lined up, go ahead and thread in each of your bolts. And with that T30 Torx socket, tighten it down. You don't need to overtighten because you are going into plastic. So just be mindful if you are using a power tool. Continue that process until all of your hardware is reinstalled and tightened down. Now, grab the larger hardware. These are a little bit longer and the head is a little bit wider. Go ahead and line these up to the top plastic piece and install these with a T30 Torx socket as well. Same situation as the other bolts. These are going into plastic, so just be careful if you're using a power tool like we are not to overtighten. Repeat that process until all of your bolts are installed. And now that you have this panel reinstalled, you can shut your tailgate. And now you can lock and unlock with your key fob.All right. So, that is gonna do it for the review and install of this Tailgate Lock Conversion Kit. And remember, for all things Tacoma, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
