    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper, fitting all 2007 and up Wranglers. Today we're gonna talk through the installation of this bumper which is a fairly simple one out of three wrenches. There are a few additional parts to install with this bumper than some other aftermarket front bumpers, but this is still completely bolt-on and an easy install. We're also going to talk about the construction and a few of the other features of this bumper. This is for those of you who are looking for a really heavy-duty plate steel full-width front bumper that comes right out of the box with a winch mounting plate, a bumper hoop that accepts auxiliary lights. This will work with your factory fog lights. This has a front skid plate. This really has everything that you could want any full-width aftermarket front bumper right out of the box, at what I think is a pretty fair price. As I mentioned before, this is a full-width front bumper. This will cover the full distance that your factory front bumper will. However, unlike some other steel aftermarket front bumpers that are full-width, this has cutouts on the corners that will allow you to run a 37-inch tire in most lift configurations without any clearance issues. This is, again, specifically designed to give you a little bit more clearance to run up to a 37, which is a really nice feature. As I said before, this comes out of the box with a winch mounting plate. This is winch-ready, and this does put the winch down in between the frame rails, which is a look I really like. A lotta people say it helps to keep the winch from blocking air to the radiator. I don't know how much air it actually blocks, I personally just like the look of a sunken winch. This also comes right outta the box with this over rider hoop on it that does have two mounting tabs on the top for some additional auxiliary lighting. With a lot of other bumpers, this is something that you have to add afterward. And a nice part about this being a bolt-on piece, instead of it being welded on, is you can not install it if you want to and just put the bolts in the holes to block them off or get plastic block off caps. Either way, it's an option. If you wanna run it, you can. This also accepts your factory front fog lights, which is always a win in my book. You already have the factory fog lights, you already have all the wiring for it, and this keeps you from having to go out there and buy additional auxiliary lights to fill those holes. And finally, this does come with a front skid plate. Now, there isn't a lot in that area to protect unless you're a Rubicon owner with a front electronics play bar disconnect, there's not a lot directly under the bumper to protect. However, the skid plate does give the front bumper a more substantial look and does make this look a little bit more aggressive and off-road-like. So a lot of you are going to like that feature as well. So, like I said, this comes with a lot of things all right out of the box, and that's what makes me say that this is at a fair price. It is expensive for a front bumper, but there aren't many other features that you would want. So for installation, as I said, I'm giving this a one out of three wrenches. This will bolt directly onto your Jeep. there are a few more parts and pieces than some other aftermarket front bumpers, but again this is an easy install, just follow the instructions. The first step is of course removing your factory front bumper which you'll do by removing the eight nuts that hold it in place. Make sure that you also remove your splash shield, your frame cover, and unclip your wiring harness for your fog lights from the crash bar before removing the bumper. After that you'll remove your fog lights from that bumper and bolt them into your new one, using the included hardware. After that, the next step is to install the winch mounting plate for your new bumper on the Jeep that will go directly in between the frame rails and bolt into place using the included hardware. After that, you'll install your winch on your winch mount plate, then go ahead and install the rest of the bracketry and install the front bumper on the Jeep. After that, you'll install the lower skid plate section and you'll be finished. This whole installation, because it does have a few more steps than some others, might take you closer to two hours than one. But it's still going to be a very simple install that can be done completely with hand tools. I've said before that I think this is a fairly priced bumper for what you get, and I really do. I think this is a really well-built bumper, but when you think of all the features you get, this is a full-width bumper giving you full-width protection, a plate steel bumper that allows you to run 37s, that gives you an over rider hoop with auxiliary mounts, has a winch mount, uses the factory fog lights, and has a front skid plate all right out of the box, it becomes worth the price you have to pay for it. There are other bumpers out there that are a little bit lower priced if you are on a little bit more of a budget. And those are gonna be great bumpers as well, but they're probably not going to have all the features that this bumper has. So if you're looking for a really complete full-width plate steel front bumper with a lot of bells and whistles and all of the features you might be looking for, this is going to be a really nice option for you. So, that's my review of the Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper, fitting all 2007 and up JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Good Looking and Effective Bumper. As big, bold, and beefy as its name suggests, the Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper is a deluxe component for your off-roading 2007-2018 Wrangler JK and JL, including a winch mount, space for OE lights, and more. Made to look handsome in design, this bumper boasts housings for the OE fog lights, a bolt-on skid plate, and a bolt-on bull bar, so you can choose exactly which features to include at any given time. There's a winch mount, positioned lower than usual to improve air flow, plus towable D-ring mounts that are welded both inside and outside for superior strength.

Lets You Mount OE Fog Lights. The Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper includes housings that are designed to fit the OE fog lights (or similarly sized aftermarket lights) built into its structure. The bolt-on bull bar also features two spotlight mounting tabs for additional aftermarket lighting if desired (no lights included).

Full-Width Bumper with Heavy-Duty Build. Featuring a faceted shape that improves tire clearance and approach angles for superior off-road flexibility, while offering full-width protection to the front your Wrangler, the Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper is made from 3/16" cold-rolled steel. Heavy-duty welds connect much of the component together. A tough black powder-coat paint job over a zinc-infused primer provides rustproofing for the bumper along with a hardy, commanding look.

Straightforward Bolt-On Fit. The Smittybilt XRC Atlas bolts on in place of the stock bumper without any drilling or modifications needed. The bumper comes with a complete package of marine-grade stainless steel hardware, and needs only hand tools for attachment.

Limited Lifetime Warranty. The Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper is protected by a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer against defects in the structure or workmanship of the bumper. A separate 5 year limited warranty applies to the powder-coated finish.

Technical Note. For Jeep Wranglers from 2011-2018 you will need to add an extension to the fog light harness to reuse them.

Application. The Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper is made for fitment to 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK and JL models.

When installing with a Smittybilt wench on a 2 door Rubicon, would a one inch front coil spring spacer be advised to counter the added weight?

    StephenS

    • If you notice sag with your Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper and your Smittybilt winch and want to correct it -we would suggest a small spacer usually 1 inch to .75 inches pending how much sag you notice.

Is it easy to install a winch after installing the bumper, or does it need to go on before?

    BrianH

    • The Smittybilt XRC Atlas Front Bumper would require the winch to be installed onto the bumper first, and then the bumper can be installed onto you Wrangler. We do have a install guide provided here: https://www.extremeterrain.com/smittybilt-xrc-atlas-bumper-jk-76892-manu-install.html showing the steps.

      Amazing Value

I have it on my 2010 JKU with a Warn 88980 ZEON 8 Winch in it. Sturdy, ergonomic, keeps your car protected and makes stealing the winch nearly impossible. I cannot speak for installation time since I paid for it to be done at the shop.

Aggresive look, solid construction. You will lose about an inch from your lift. It is a 200+ lbs bumper plus the winch weight. If you really want this bumper embrace yourself with patience, it took mine 4 months and one week to get delivered. Was it worth the wait...YES!

      Atlas front bumper

It's a great bumper, but difficult to install with just your average tool set. I took it to jeep dealer and they charged me 388$ to get it installed. Seems like a bit much, but they said they had to drill out som parts for fitment. Seems like aftermarket prods shouldn't have to not fit exactly... Overall good look and feel.

      Mean Bumper

Ill start with my one and only big problem with this product... Its usually out of stock... I waited and got it thought and It was worth the wait... Really aggressive look and really tough construction... I could run over a tree with this thing... I would love have a run in with a "Hummer"... Clearance is great, the fit was perfect, my winch fit on the plate and then inside the bumper like a glove... Only had to make one adjustment for putting it on... Several bolts (that needed to be torqued to 135ft#) were inaccessible. This took some new tools and a little ingenuity. but I got it done. One thing I over looked being a first timer with all this, I didnt take into consideration the weight of the bumper and winch before I bought them... I have a 2 in lift and 32in tires... good for on and off road... After applying the winch and bumper, I lost a full inch of the front end. Not that big a deal because I dont do any Extreme offroading. Mostly just muddy flooded fields and creek beds, but I still might add in a little spacer to get my front back up but I dont need to... Headlights were fine to... One thing to take into consideration is you will have to move your factory fog lights to a different spot. This bumper places them wider apart and you will have to re work the wiring harness to allow the slack you need to get them hooked up... No big deal though... Im no electrician and I got it done in a couple of hours. Great Bumper.

      This bumper is awesome!!

I could not tell if this bumper would look tough or more classic from the online pictures but I liked the safety features so I ordered it. I love everything about this bumper. From the huge bolts to the spray on finish, everything looks great. It is very tough and stylish. Give a good don't mess with me impression. Since adding it to my wrangler with some color matching D-rings I am getting lots of complements and people telling me my jeep looks like it could take on anything.

SOLID, BUT FLIP AND DRILL TIRE CARRIER PLATE

Great design concept. Wasn't a fan of the departure angle on the tire carrier plate once I got it mounted up. Easy fix. I flipped the plate, drilled out 2 new bolt holes and created the perfect departure angle for my 35s. The catch mechanism can use better hardware for adjustments. Swapped those 4 bolts out for heavier duty bolts. I've added some photos.

      nice looking bumper

I really wanted a lighter, stubby bumper but this is one is the best looking bumpers on the market in my opinion..especially for the price. I love grill protector and the angles and the wider placement of the fog lights and how the winch sits inside. me and 2 buddies did it in about 4 hours but that also included a winch. only con is the weight and the instructions are pretty poor. great bumper, love the look and already getting compliments

      Pretty Perfect Bumper

I live in a Jeep heavy community, they're everywhere. My Jeep is the only one I've seen with this particular bumper, initially the fact that I hadn't seen them in person was scary, maybe they were garbage and I was the only person that missed that piece of information. That wasn't the case. 1.) Shipping. The bumper came quickly and extremely well packaged, everything was wrapped in foam and in individually boxed, all that was put in another box and shipped on a pallet. Very impressive, everything was intact. 2.) Unboxing. Opening everything up, I found that the finish was very clean and even, a high quality powder coat, very attractive. The bumper was very symmetrical, the cuts were clean and even, the welds are very clean and neat, generally higher quality than I had expected from a $700 bumper. 3.) Installation. Once the old bumper is off everything is fairly straightforward, the instructions are fairly clear an if you get stuck, follow simple logic and everything will probably come together. Fit was fair, the only real issue that came up for me was with the lower skid, it didn't quite line up in the corners, just not bent quite enough, not a huge issue, just held it together with some vice-grips screwed it together, cant even tell. 4.) Overall Impression. This bumper is perfect, It looks good, it clears large tires, my winch disappears inside it. Big bonus for me is that its different, I have had this on for several months and I have yet to see another Jeep with this particular bumper. Its solid, the finish is great and its very durable, I highly recommend it, it has held up well, there was one small spot at the base of the bull bar where water was getting in, some rust started appearing, a little black silicone and everything is good to go. Atlas bumper

Bumper is easy to install, very heavy with winch on it. Drops your jeep in front and inch or so. Fog lights fit in hole of bumper but factory wires to hook up are not long enough after 2012. They fail to mention that when you buy it. The fit and finish is great, instructions suck but it's very easy to put together without them

      Very Difficult to Install

This bumper is very nice, and looks amazing. The reason I gave it three stars is because of the difficulty of installation. While "Ryan from Extreme Terrain" claims that this is a two hour installation, he obviously did not put this on a newer model year Jeep. A one wrench installation should not include drilling into the frame tongue, and using a metal grinder on the bottom of the frame tongue. It took me over twenty hours to get this thing on. I also had problems with the locking bolts not fitting, so I had to use Loctite. Pray nothing goes wrong with my winch, otherwise someone is going to have to take a blowtorch to the bolts to get that bumper off of the car. I really like the bumper, but I would not have bought it if I had known about the installation difficulties. Now that it is on, it does look cool, however.

      Good buy and excellent protection

This bumper offers great protection at a great price. It looks great, has excellent features, and is easy to install. I had to dock it a star for three reasons. The first reason is because one bolt hole for the skid plate did not line up on one end. It was half a hole off but with 5 other bolts holding it in place I was comfortable in leaving that bolt out. The second is because I did have to dill one hole in the jeeps frame larger and had to cut, grind flush, and paint some excess frame plate material (as per the instructions) to get the skid plate to fit properly. The third reason might be a little picky but without a winch (have not bought one yet) there is a big open hole in the top and this bumper does not come with a winch delete plate to cover the giant hole till a wince is bought and installed. Luckily I had an old black plastic floor mat that had a diamond plate pattern to it and was big enough to fill the void. It actually looks pretty good filling the void. I did not use the bull bar that came with the bumper because I did not like the looks of it as it leans back towards the grill. I was going to turn it around so it leaned forward but the light mounting taps that are on it would then face forward and looked stupid. I may cut the tabs off touch up the paint and mount bar in the way I wish latter. For now it looks just fine without the bull bar.

I looked for a long time to replace my front bumper. I was looking for a new look, getting rid of the plastic bumper. Every bumper I found, modifications had to be made by relocating or grinding parts of the jeep. I found the Smittybuilt bumper and read the install instructions. It was a complete bolt on with no modifications. Furthermore, I could not believe the price. I ordered the bumper and 9500lb Baricade winch. All parts except the winch, shipped in one box, carefully packaged. The install was fairly easy, everything lined up. The instructions on the web site were most helpful. I have had many compliments from other jeep enthusiasts.

      Excellent Bumper

I just installed this bumper and it looks great. It took about 4 hours but the PDF they send could have clearer pictures and a little more descriptive. Other than that I love the look. 2 things you should know, one if you are going to install the winch then make sure that you order a vacuum pump relocation kit because you will have to move and the other is if your running larger tires (33-35 inch) it may be in your best interest to install at least a 2.5 inch lift because as mentioned in one of the other reviews this bumper weighs about 220 lbs completely assembled and it will weigh down your front end a little. Have metric sockets and wrenches ranging from 13 millimeters to 22 and one bolt is even larger, not sure of the size. You don't need a lot of tools to do this and it is well worth it when you've finished. Has a great and unique look to it.
