This Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent is for those of you that have a 1987 and up Wrangler and are looking for a roof top tent that is both compact and packed full of features. A roof top tent's gonna be for those of you that do that overlanding style of wheeling, or just do some camping and want an easy-to-set-up tent. As I said before, this thing does have a lot of features, is pretty large inside, and sets up very, very simply. As far as roof top tents go, there are some that are all over the spectrum pricing wise. I do think that this one is pretty fairly priced for what you're getting, and I think it's going to be a very useful addition if you do that type of wheeling. As far as materials go, this is made of polyester, stainless steel, aluminum, all very high quality, very strong and also lightweight components. This is going to be a roof top tent that will install on any type of roof rack that you might have. It's going to install very easily and as I said before it's going to set up easier than any other tent I've ever used. There's just a couple of straps that you have to release, then you can unfold this thing. It has a ladder, allows you to crawl right up inside, and it does come with a two inch foam mattress pad on the bottom of it already installed. Nice and easy, again the setup could not be any simpler. As far as features go, this thing has a ton of them. This is going to have a couple of straps that go directly to the center of the main frame mechanism, and those are gonna help you to climb in and out of the tent when you're going up and down that ladder. Of course it does have that ladder, which is going to be something that'll make it easier to open and close the tent, and of course give you easy access without the need for any additional ladder. It's going to be a telescoping ladder, so it folds up nice and tight as well. This has an LED light on the inside of it. It has a USB plug so you can power this off of a 120V power source with a USB adapter or with any USB charger that you might have for your cellphone. This also has a 12V plug, so you can plug your cellphone charger into it. You just run that through the tent down into the vehicle plugging it in and picking up 12V down there. This is going to have a couple of different rainflies on the outside of it. It has sunroofs built right into it, so you can get plenty of ventilation, plenty of light when it is daylight. Again, it has a ton of features, it's a very well built piece, and if you're looking for a roof top tent, I think this is going to be a real nice option. As for installation, I'm giving you this a very simple one out of three wrenches. This is going to attach onto your traditional roof rack with the included hardware, the included bars. It has four attachment points that's going to make this a very secure piece. There's a little bit of additional assembly as far as getting the ladder attached onto the outside of the tent as well, but those are really things that you're only going to have to do one time, the first time you get this mounted up. After that as I said, setting this up could not be any easier. You just unfold it and attach a couple of spring poles for your rainflies and you're done. Very, very simple to set up.This roof top tent will run you right around $900 and I do think that's gonna be a pretty fair price for what you're getting. There are going to be roof top tents out there that are more expensive. Some are gonna be larger, lighter weight, have additional features, but for what you're getting here, and for a roof top tent that is as packed full of features as this one is, I don't think $900 is a bad price. You can also get some add-ons for this if you do need a little bit of a additional space. So this is going to be something that's modular, it can grow with you and it's going to be a really nice addition if you do that overlanding or camping-style wheeling. So if you're looking for a roof top tent that's packed full of features, I think this one from Smittybilt's a really nice option to take a look at, and you can get it right here at extremeterrain.com

The best tree fort ever!
This is a remarkably well thought out tent, from set up to pack up, with all sorts of utility built in, fasteners in all the right places, lights, pockets, even a bag for your shoes just outside the door. I thought I might need some additional padding, but the foam pad it comes with is plenty comfortable. I especially like that I can close it all up with sleeping bags and pillows left inside. I've had it for almost a year, used it many times and am just as happy with it now as I was the first trip (an Extreme Terrain sponsored event – Exploring New Hampshire's 2019 Anniversary Run). I was concerned about having the weight up there off road, particularly off camber, but on the trails I could barely notice it. The cover is very heavy duty and has yet to show any signs of branches dragging across it. Good stuff!Helpful (0)

My son and I took our maiden camping trip with this tent on our Jeep Jk. It was a breeze to set up and put away and during a heavy rain we were high and dry.Helpful (2)

Very easy to assemble, took me and my husband to lift onto rack, so that was easy too. Well built tent, easy to deploy, fairly easy to close by myself, little more effort to make sure all tent in inside before securing but with a few more practices, it’ll be quicker. So far I love it!Helpful (2)

I love this!
This tent is perfect! It is good quality. I have had no problems or concerns with traveling at highway speeds with it. It’s super easy to set up and comfortable to sleep in. I am by myself a lot so I needed something I could set up and take town by myself and I am able to do so no problem. The only tricky part is getting everything tucked in when folding it up, but after you do it a couple of times it’s no biggie.Helpful (4)

Do you need a roof rack? Does this product come with a roof rack? If so, which roof rack would be recommended as I weigh 250 pounds which is the rated weight limit on most racks.
The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent will require a roof rack, which is not included. We would recommend the Barricade Roof Rack which comes with a 350lb weight rating, or if you plan on having a large amount of gear in the tent with you, the Kargo Master Congo Pro Kit and the Kargo Master Mod-Rak EXP System areexcellent heavy duty racks with weight ratings of 850 lbs
I see you have this mounted to open to the side of the jeep. Can this be mounted to open to the front or rear of the jeep?
Unfortunately the length on the tent's opening side is too long in comparison to the width of the Jeep to be positioned to have the opening to the front/rear of the Jeep.
What rack would you recommend? Most I've found have a 300lb limit, with the tent weighing in at ~130. Just me and a bottle of water pushes this one pictured to the limit. Nevermind another person or my kids. Curious if there's racks out there in the 600 range - so I don't have to worry about anything?
Kargo Master makes a number of roof rack systems with weight ratings between 500 lbs and 850 lbs. i would look into their offerings to see if any fit your needs. http://www.extremeterrain.com/kargo-master-jeep-wrangler-parts.html
What roof rack is recommended for this on a TJ?
With this tent you can use this Barricade roof rack for your TJ https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-roof-rack-black-tj-j100172.html, Item number J100172.
In the youtube video from 8/21/17 about camping mods, you state that it will work with racks that go through the hard top. Will this work with the Teraflex JK Nebo roof rack? If so, does it require the slat kit for the Nebo also?
The Teraflex Nebo Roof Rack has an 800 lb static load rating so it should work with the Smittybilt Overland Roof Tent. The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent will require cross bars on the Teraflex Nebo Roof Rack Main Rail Kit to properly support the the tent floor.
This tent is able to be used with the Gavin Adventure Half Rack. Though it does not leave much additional room for cargo.
The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent will work with your Roof rack, however this will take the majority of the space on the rack leaving little for storage on 2 door models.
Yes! This Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent comes with everything needed to work properly, save for the roof rack.
The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent weighs approximately 130 lbs.
Compatibility with rack systems is dependent upon total load, including persons in the tent, etc. Shipped weight of the tent is 130 lbs.
Yes, I have seen many people upgrade the foam pad inside and still fold this up without a problem.
It depends on how many doors you have, and what you want to use it for. I would go with the the Garvin Adventure rack. I hope this helps!
At this time we would not have any cross-bars specifically for the Body Armor rack.
