    Review & Install Video

This Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent is for those of you that have a 1987 and up Wrangler and are looking for a roof top tent that is both compact and packed full of features. A roof top tent's gonna be for those of you that do that overlanding style of wheeling, or just do some camping and want an easy-to-set-up tent. As I said before, this thing does have a lot of features, is pretty large inside, and sets up very, very simply. As far as roof top tents go, there are some that are all over the spectrum pricing wise. I do think that this one is pretty fairly priced for what you're getting, and I think it's going to be a very useful addition if you do that type of wheeling. As far as materials go, this is made of polyester, stainless steel, aluminum, all very high quality, very strong and also lightweight components. This is going to be a roof top tent that will install on any type of roof rack that you might have. It's going to install very easily and as I said before it's going to set up easier than any other tent I've ever used. There's just a couple of straps that you have to release, then you can unfold this thing. It has a ladder, allows you to crawl right up inside, and it does come with a two inch foam mattress pad on the bottom of it already installed. Nice and easy, again the setup could not be any simpler. As far as features go, this thing has a ton of them. This is going to have a couple of straps that go directly to the center of the main frame mechanism, and those are gonna help you to climb in and out of the tent when you're going up and down that ladder. Of course it does have that ladder, which is going to be something that'll make it easier to open and close the tent, and of course give you easy access without the need for any additional ladder. It's going to be a telescoping ladder, so it folds up nice and tight as well. This has an LED light on the inside of it. It has a USB plug so you can power this off of a 120V power source with a USB adapter or with any USB charger that you might have for your cellphone. This also has a 12V plug, so you can plug your cellphone charger into it. You just run that through the tent down into the vehicle plugging it in and picking up 12V down there. This is going to have a couple of different rainflies on the outside of it. It has sunroofs built right into it, so you can get plenty of ventilation, plenty of light when it is daylight. Again, it has a ton of features, it's a very well built piece, and if you're looking for a roof top tent, I think this is going to be a real nice option. As for installation, I'm giving you this a very simple one out of three wrenches. This is going to attach onto your traditional roof rack with the included hardware, the included bars. It has four attachment points that's going to make this a very secure piece. There's a little bit of additional assembly as far as getting the ladder attached onto the outside of the tent as well, but those are really things that you're only going to have to do one time, the first time you get this mounted up. After that as I said, setting this up could not be any easier. You just unfold it and attach a couple of spring poles for your rainflies and you're done. Very, very simple to set up.This roof top tent will run you right around $900 and I do think that's gonna be a pretty fair price for what you're getting. There are going to be roof top tents out there that are more expensive. Some are gonna be larger, lighter weight, have additional features, but for what you're getting here, and for a roof top tent that is as packed full of features as this one is, I don't think $900 is a bad price. You can also get some add-ons for this if you do need a little bit of a additional space. So this is going to be something that's modular, it can grow with you and it's going to be a really nice addition if you do that overlanding or camping-style wheeling. So if you're looking for a roof top tent that's packed full of features, I think this one from Smittybilt's a really nice option to take a look at, and you can get it right here at

        5 Top Rated Questions

Do you need a roof rack? Does this product come with a roof rack? If so, which roof rack would be recommended as I weigh 250 pounds which is the rated weight limit on most racks.

        • The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent will require a roof rack, which is not included. We would recommend the Barricade Roof Rack which comes with a 350lb weight rating, or if you plan on having a large amount of gear in the tent with you, the Kargo Master Congo Pro Kit and the Kargo Master Mod-Rak EXP System areexcellent heavy duty racks with weight ratings of 850 lbs

I see you have this mounted to open to the side of the jeep. Can this be mounted to open to the front or rear of the jeep?

        • Unfortunately the length on the tent's opening side is too long in comparison to the width of the Jeep to be positioned to have the opening to the front/rear of the Jeep.

What rack would you recommend? Most I've found have a 300lb limit, with the tent weighing in at ~130. Just me and a bottle of water pushes this one pictured to the limit. Nevermind another person or my kids. Curious if there's racks out there in the 600 range - so I don't have to worry about anything?

        • Kargo Master makes a number of roof rack systems with weight ratings between 500 lbs and 850 lbs. i would look into their offerings to see if any fit your needs.

What roof rack is recommended for this on a TJ?

        • With this tent you can use this Barricade roof rack for your TJ, Item number J100172.

In the youtube video from 8/21/17 about camping mods, you state that it will work with racks that go through the hard top. Will this work with the Teraflex JK Nebo roof rack? If so, does it require the slat kit for the Nebo also?

        • The Teraflex Nebo Roof Rack has an 800 lb static load rating so it should work with the Smittybilt Overland Roof Tent. The Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent will require cross bars on the Teraflex Nebo Roof Rack Main Rail Kit to properly support the the tent floor.

            Great tent

Very easy to assemble, took me and my husband to lift onto rack, so that was easy too. Well built tent, easy to deploy, fairly easy to close by myself, little more effort to make sure all tent in inside before securing but with a few more practices, it’ll be quicker. So far I love it!

            I love this!

This tent is perfect! It is good quality. I have had no problems or concerns with traveling at highway speeds with it. It’s super easy to set up and comfortable to sleep in. I am by myself a lot so I needed something I could set up and take town by myself and I am able to do so no problem. The only tricky part is getting everything tucked in when folding it up, but after you do it a couple of times it’s no biggie.

This tent is top quality and very user friendly. We've take it camping/fishing six time this summer. It slept three people comfortably. Also our grandchild couldn't wait until we had to go th bed.

            Rooftop Tent

Easy to install and even easier to setup/breakdown (about 15 minutes). It’s roomy and pretty comfortable and it’s nice being off the ground.

            No Regrets

I've spent over 10 nights in this tent so far, and I couldn't be happier with its performance. I did have to clean out about a tablespoon of metal shavings from the inside of the tent when I first installed it (I guess they don't clean up their mess before boxing them up). I also had to file all cut aluminum edges and chamfer all drilled holes due to the rough manufacturing process (it only took about 15 minutes, but this is why i gave it 4 out of 5 stars).

All around everything I was looking for and more

I love everything about this tent. Install was quick and easy, really just needed my wife to help get it on top of the jeep, once there got bolted on nice and easy. Use is a breeze, one person less than 10 minutes once you do it a time or two. Wiping the tent down before packing up in the morning can be a pain so you don't store it wet, but way better than cleaning up a tent on the ground. Space is perfect, it will easily accommodate me, my wife and our 4 year old, and the included lights and charging accessories are a huge bonus. First trip out had some torrential rains in Acadia national park and the tent didn't leak a drop. I could not have been more satisfied.

Just as good as the big name roof tents

Overall I'm happy with the tent, my only one small gripe is the ladder retention knobs that control the telescoping function, they seem cheap and take some force and wiggling around in order for them to work. Now for the good stuff which is the most important in owning a tent like this: It does keep you dry! We probably had 40 out of 48 hours of non stop rain over our weekend of camping some of which during the night was basically a severe downpour...and the tent didn't leak. Another harsh test this tent passed was during the actual driving portion. We drove higway speeds (in rain of course) for little more than 2 hours before arriving at camp. Lucky us, we got a small break in rain and when we began to set up camp and took off the tent cover and unfolded the tent it was dry. We also did some harsh rock crawling 4x4 wheeling near the end of our weekend and the tent stayed secured on the roof and didn't budge from its mounting system. Matress in this tent is ok...not great, not bad, just ok. Overtime I do see myself swapping the matress out with memory foam. Smittybilt...upgrade the ladder to this tent and you've got a sweet kick butt product.

            Roof tent for TJ

First of all I lost some pieces due to my dog destroying the package, 2nd, that being said I drilled another hole into the floor of the tent next to the other hole already there (probably EXTREMLEY not recommended) but i made mounts using a flat 1/4 4 inch by 4 inch square piece of steel to give back strength and used U bolts through the rest of the hardware that came with it, to mount to the Barricade TJ roof rack. The tent sits very Firmly on the roof rack and does not move. The Mattress that comes with it is extremely comfy for what it is and the LED lights on the inside are SUPER bright. We used it on a 3K mile trip through the Rockies 8-4-17. Its rain proof and very wind proof. set up takes only about 2 minuets once on the jeep and the same for putting it away. I Recommend this to anyone who loves the outdoors and they're jeep.

            Perfect accessory for my Jeep!

This rooftop tent is perfect on my 2-door Jeep Wrangler! Setting it up is a breeze, and installing it was just as easy! I went for the installation for over the side of my Jeep, instead of over the back and the rack system holds it perfectly! Our first night using the tent, the winds were up to 25 mph and you couldn't even tell inside the tent! I high recommend this tent if you are comparing it to CVT and others that are more expensive!
