    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge bug deflector in matte black, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. Today we're going to go over the construction of this bug deflector, and, of course, the installation. First and foremost, a bug deflector is designed to deflect wind up over the windshield of the front of your Jeep, allowing small stones and bugs to be deflected with that wind and not end up splattered on your windshield. Now, how much aerodynamic change you actually get from a bug deflector is certainly for debate. A lot of people will install these because either they like the look, and it definitely changes the look of the front of your Jeep, or because they have some damage on that leading edge of their hood that they're looking to cover up, or they want to protect it from damage. The leading edge is certainly a magnet for stone-throws, so if you have some damage and you don't want to get the metal and paint repaired, this is going to be a much less expensive way of making that repair or, as I mentioned, some people just like the look of these bug deflectors. This bug deflector is made of an acrylic material, which is really the traditional material for a bug deflector. It's going to be strong but also a little bit flexible. Of course, this has the matte black finish which makes it look really nice with either the matte black window visors or just as a standalone accent piece on the front of your Jeep. Now, this has a couple of tabs molded onto the back of it. These ones here on the outside are designed to put a screw into to hold it onto the underside of the hood. And these, of course, have 3M adhesive pre-applied on them to make the installation really secure. Now even though there are a couple of screws that hold this into place, there's no drilling required with this installation. You'll just be using some J-nuts in existing holes that are already in the hood. So speaking of the installation, it's going to be really simple for this part. All you need to do is first clean the underside of the hood where that 3M adhesive is going to attach. Using an alcohol prep pad or a good alcohol-based cleaner will be plenty to get that area clean. After that, you can install the J-nuts in the existing square holes on the underside of your hood. Make sure the bug deflector lines up properly and is nice and square and exactly where you like it. Then peel off the red backing on the 3M tape and press it into place. Finally, you'll use the screws and washers that come in the hardware package with the bug deflector to attach the two outer tabs into those J-nuts that you just installed. The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than a half hour and you won't need any specialty tools, just a good cleaner and a Phillips-head screwdriver. I find that a lot of visual modifications that are well-built and fit well will come in right around the $100 mark, and that's exactly where you're going to be for this bug deflector. So, if you want the visual modification and you like the way this looks, or you want to protect or cover up damage that's existing on your hood and you have $100 to spend, I think this is a nice piece. It's very well-built and it'll fit really well. So, whether you're looking to protect the leading edge of your hood, cover up existing damage, or you want the wind deflection over the windshield to keep bugs from splattering on it, this is going to be a really nice addition to your Jeep. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge bug deflector in matte black, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Construction. This smoked black bug deflector from Rugged Ridge is constructed out of impact resistant acrylic, so you can take it off-roading without worrying about stray rocks and other debris.

Protection. This bug deflector protects your windshield and hood from irritating bug splatters while cruising on the highway or conquering trails. The deflector follows your Jeep's body line to accent and enhance your JK's look. Rugged Ridge backs this deflector with a 3 year limited warranty.

Accessories. This deflector comes with self tapping screws and automotive grade mounting tape.

Application. This deflector fits 2007-2018 JK Wranglers. Rugged Ridge suggests hard mounting the deflector rather than relying on just the tape because of high wind stress.

The video that refers to install process still states j-nuts not self tapping screws. Can you clarify please ?

        • The J-Nuts will mount into existing holes in the hood so that you do not need to screw into the hood itself.

Can the Rugged Ridge Lettering be removed? I Have a blacked out Willys and That going to standout more than I want.

The video states j-nuts, but the description states self tapping screws. Could you clarify if the j-nuts come with it as I am not too keen on drilling into the hood. Thanks.

        • This can be installed using two different methods. You can drill into the top part of the hood for extra security or use the supplied 3M tape for install. I have a guide here that will display both options. https://www.extremeterrain.com/rugged-ridge-smoked-bug-jk-1135002-manu-install.html

I've read that many bug deflectors cause the soft tops to flap be horribly noisy. Have you had any problems with this?

        • The Rugged Ridge Smoked Bug Deflector should not have any interference with your soft top.

            Nice and easy

Debated about this based upon questions about effectiveness and appearance. Glad I went ahead. Easy to install. Biggest issue is lack of alignment marks. Used a tape measure to center. Used tape and not screws. Fast, easy, effective. Still early in my use but bug strikes appear to be way down. Looks good. Well priced.

            disappointed in quality

The bug deflector arrived warped, and had many bubbles in the plastic. Customer service is sending a replacement but this time I am getting the matte black instead of the smoke. I am hopeful that the new one will live up to expectations as there are wonderful reviews on that one.

            Bug Deflector

Very easy to install , need to use the screws that come with it because the adhesive mounting tape will not hold it in place. The Deflector itself was warped or bowed in a section along the top. Had to shim in up to make it appear lever across the top . I'm hoping the over time the bowing will level out and I can remove the shim.

            Drilling necessary

It looked like it fit in the video but it does not. I have a 2012 JK and i needed to drill to get it to stay. Does deflect but shoots everything up so you get a rock or whatever hit the top of your windsheild. It's winder so havent encountered bugs yet. Other then that looks good.

            Reduced bug splatter

I knew a bug deflector wasn't a complete solution while living in an agricultural state. The splatter used to land as low as the dash area an after installation, I get less splatter and when it happens, they impact towards the top of my windshield. The groove to allow spacing for the hood latch release could be better/wider. I had to center it based off the groove an the deflector is slightly now off center towards the passenger side because of it by a few centimeters. Only 3 of the 4 washers came in the packaging. No big deal since Home Depot is literally a mile away from me and problem was immediately solved. Rugged Ridge should QA their outbound products more closely since they have bigger ticket items than this one to avoid potential complaints. The instruction video is outdated because the design no longer uses J-hooks. Just the 3M with/or without option to drill 4 reinforcement screws. Overall, this item still did the job though an I'm happy with it.
